Review of Nassau 34

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 132.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The Nassau 34 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Nassau 34 is typically equipped with a Westerbeke diesel engine at 27 hp (20 kW). Calculated max speed is about 9.0 knots.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 189.0 liters (49 US gallons, 41 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Nassau 34 is 2.47, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Nassau 34 is about 190 kg/cm, alternatively 1069 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 190 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1069 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 31.58

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

My broker is also trying to pique my interest in a 1985 Nassau 34. I have not had much luck finding about these boats other than they were built in Taiwan, which often means well built and slow.

nassau 34 sailboat

"I have not had much luck finding about these boats other than they were built in Taiwan, which often means well built and slow." Sorry, but more often then not being built in Taiwan in the mid 1980''s meant: not all that well built, really bad blister problems, steel fuel and water tanks, teak decks over by now rotted plywood sub-decks that are ready for replacement and as you noted really slow. Usually, but then again not always. Jeff

I had not heard about blister problems from Taiwan boats and I had forgotten about the teak deck- I don''t know if this boat has one or not - but I do know I don''t want one.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Is there a reason that this boat typically sells for less than $20,000 -- I have seen a number for sale below $20,000, but it just seems too good to be true. Is there something I ought to know before considering a purchase?

Stan Breaux21640

Google it and you can find some reviews, probably I looked at an Irwin 37 a couple of years ago with the same reverse sticker shock. Reviews said it was more of a motorsailer than a sailboat, although I have heard of other people who are very happy with theirs. Also, I think they have a reputation for deck core problems due to poorly bedded deck fittings. Just what I've heard... don't want to insult anyone.

higgs

Irwin Irwins quality was unpredictable. Some boats were fine and other boats - same model - had problems. In general, they are not as well built as other brands of their era. When one compares things like chainplates, ports, cabin house thickness, interior pan thickness, one finds that Irwin did sometimes build a little lightly. I had an Irwin and the hull and deck were quite solid, but the cabin top flexed as did the pan floor in the cabin. The boat had been ordered with oversized chainplates, which I felt were the proper size for the boat - ie: the stock boat was too light. The original owner had also ordered a beefed up hull which also made me wonder about the stock boat's hull, since I felt the hull on my boat was pretty good. There were other corners Irwin cut, many not that important. I think this reputation is reflected in the pricing of Irwins. I pretty much cruised all of L Mich with mine and it served me well for a dozen years.

Almost bought an Irwin but..... I had gotten on an Irwin website and I was amazed at how many people sent me private e-mails trashing out Irwins. They sais they didnt want to start a war by publicly answering my questions on that site. Most of the issues dealt with delamination problems and soft deck cores.

I have a 37'er My experience in 5 years of ownership is that anything old will need something. This goes, that goes, it need repair. My boat is a 1976 and that qualifies it as an antique according to the BMV if it was a car. Coincidentally my car is a 1995 and half way to being an antique. In it, the AC went and I removed it with a bypass. It's rusting. it has 180,000 miles on it. It blew a fuse! Get the picture? If it's old, ot will have problems. You have to weigh the repairs against then price. But.... Today the wind is up as are the waves. And after a party last night there are a lot of people at the marina who slept on board. Guess who's boat we will be taking out because the weather is perceived to be to bad for their 30, 28, 27 footers? I'm happy with mine. I bought it for 18.5k and have about 22k in it. Is it worth it? Heck yes dude!!!

Boat: Nassau 34
34. I've had my for two years now and have done lots of on her. I continue to be impressed with the materials and construction of the vessel. Very well laid fibreglass throughout, and the joinery and finish is right up there with the best of them, above and below . This particular cored is probably one of the most solid decks out there much better than many with a higher pedigree. Sound and flex even after 30 years is non-existent. A very sea-kindly and pleasant to sail aided by its canoe stern. While its no speed demon it can reach respectable speeds in a good blow and points very well, almost making (7.1) with a rig. Fittings on board are all stainless with the exception of some furnishings such as portholes and of the column, this lends its self to its lines while still retaining the functionality of the stainless. While a little light on tankage for extended sailing this boat has lots of easily accessible inside, that can be used or repurposed if desired. Overall, if well fitted out with a new rig this boat could take you anywhere in the world without breaking the 100K mark and is small enough to single-hand with ease. I feel very lucky to have found my boat and get many people knocking on my to ask what it is and compliment her lines and finish. If you want to know more about this boat just send me a line, I would be happy to enlighten anyone interested.

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
