I sail a McVay Minuet which was/is my first boat. I fell for the classic lines and I'd say it's a perfect beginners boat. I did a lot of research on the McVay builders and actually found a forum where the grandson or great grandson William McVay III participated every once in awhile.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for McVay Minuet is about 43 kg/cm, alternatively 242 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 43 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 242 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Anyhow, he ran into a member of our sailing club and learned that he had submitted an article about the McVay Minuet to the magazine. Finally the issue with Donal O'Connor's article arrived. The price was right on it. Its a Mcvay Minuet, not sure of the year yet, but they started making them in '68. So it looks to be in pretty good shape for the most part, came with sails and a mast. No boom. The only problem I have found with the boat itself is the floor is soft.

But after reading post after post, I am curious if anyone has any experience sailing my current boat, a McVay Bluenose Sloop. I admit that I fell in love with her lines and went through ridiculous hoops to get her to the San Juan Islands. Then she spent 2 years on the hard while I built a house. Ah, but March 1st will be a different story.
The Minuet is a perfect small open sailboat. Light and forgiving, and easy to manage (both in & out of the water). There are only 2-3 of these boats locally, so I asked which one it is. Turns out it's the exact boat I missed out on this spring, and kicked myself about all summer.

As someone once told me, "This is just your first boat, learn to sail, bump into the dock, tear a sail. Figure out what you like in a boat and what you don't like, then spend the money on the boat you want." 28' is a great size. Maybe boats are more expensive out east. I would expect to be able to get a similar boat for $8000 on the west coast.
