Taste of Savoie
A culinary and pictorial adventure of my food and travels through the Savoie region of France and wherever life takes me…
La Grande Ourse, Les Gets
More from La Grande Ourse – Winter 2019 – Live music from Squid Lips every Monday lunchtime through the winter and a great new menu – same delicious Café Gourmands! Be sure to book it’s popular!
So today I’m updating a post that I originally wrote in January 2013 – however, I would start it in exactly the same way – “What a great day” as this hasn’t changed… each time I enjoy a morning ski and lunch at La Grande Ourse restaurant it’s a great day! La Grande Ourse stands high up on Mont Chery, at 1725m it is the highest altitude dining in Les Gets which is part of the wonderful 12 linked resorts of the Portes du Soleil. Mont Chery is a great place to ski as it offers some great open cruisey red runs and is normally quiet out on the piste.
La Grande Ourse is owned and has been run by the Venning family from Cornwall for several years and they’ve really made it a special place to visit. In addition to providing great lunches 7 days a week during the winter season, they offer high altitude dining in the evenings twice a week during the ski season. You arrive up on the slopes for your gourmet dinner by piste basher to a warm welcome and wonderful home cooked food. The evening views over the Portes du Soleil are amazing too.
January 2013 – What a great day! Sunday Lunch at La Grande Ourse , Mont Chery, Les Gets. You need to get a tele-cabine and a chair lift to get to it… oh yes and be on skis!! (It is possible to snow shoe or hike up from the mid-station) This mile-high restaurant has some of the best views over the Portes du Soleil, on a clear day the views are stunning, looking over the entire Les Gets ski area and showing the whole Mont Blanc chain in the background and to the left Avoriaz, Morzine and beyond. There is a large terrace for outdoor dining and on a cooler winters day a great indoor dining area with a wonderful log fire to warm your ski gloves!
The smells of a wonderful pig roast greet you before you get in the door! On arrival, we find we are seated right beside the chef carving the pig – great place to be if you like being thrown titbits of crackling while you wait!!! We enjoyed a great plate of roast pork with ALL the trimmings and stuffing, roast potatoes and parsnips and a good selection of vegetables. The pig roast is a regular Sunday feature. There are other choices on the menu if fabulous roast pork is not your thing after a hard mornings skiing! or you can opt for the pig in a bun – light lunch option too.
This was followed by a great cafe gourmand , most of the taster size desserts were homemade and the oaty rhubarb crumble was hot – delicious! Now just to negotiate my way down the mountain after all that scrummy food and some good St. Emilion! See my review and more photos of La Grande Ourse in my Les Gets Restaurant guide
