1979 Kelly Peterson Formosa 46

  • Description

Seller's Description

The 1979 Kelly Peterson Formosa 46 is a classic sailing yacht that holds a special place in the hearts of sailing enthusiasts. This offshore cruising vessel was designed by renowned naval architect Doug Peterson and built by the Formosa Boat Building Company in Taiwan during the heyday of the cruising sailboat industry.

With a length overall of 46 feet and a beam of 13.3 feet, the Kelly Peterson Formosa 46 boasts a robust and seaworthy design. Its full-keel configuration and heavy displacement contribute to its stability and ability to handle various weather conditions. The hull is constructed of fiberglass, known for its durability and low maintenance requirements.

One of the distinguishing features of the Kelly Peterson Formosa 46 is its timeless and elegant lines. The boat’s traditional sheer line, graceful overhangs, and teak accents on the deck and cabin contribute to its classic appearance. The raised aft deck and low-slung cabin house give it a distinctive profile that stands out in any marina or anchorage.

The interior of the Kelly Peterson Formosa 46 is designed with comfort and livability in mind. It features a spacious main salon with a dining area, a well-equipped galley, and ample storage space throughout. The layout includes three private cabins, providing accommodation for a small crew or a family. The warm teak joinery and traditional finishes create a cozy and inviting atmosphere below decks.

On deck, the Kelly Peterson Formosa 46 offers a spacious cockpit that provides a secure and comfortable area for sailing and socializing. The wide side decks and high bulwarks make moving around the boat safe and easy, and the well-protected cockpit provides excellent visibility for the helmsperson. The sail plan consists of a cutter rig with a mainmast positioned aft and a shorter mast forward, allowing for versatile sail configurations to suit different wind conditions.

Although the Kelly Peterson Formosa 46 was produced during the late 1970s and early 1980s, its classic design and timeless appeal have ensured its enduring popularity among cruising sailors. It remains a cherished choice for those seeking a comfortable and reliable yacht capable of taking them on memorable voyages around the world.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Yet another altered version of the KELLY-PETERSON 44 (PETERSON 44 CUTTER), first offered in 1976. (Often, as in this case, with out the payment of design royalties.) To make the boat longer, it is said that builders simply added an incremental distance between each station on the original plans.

Boat: plastic production boat, suitable for deep blue water ;)
3 years ago as well, for a lot less than the advertised .

Looking at post #1 and that copied in post #2... these posts are different.
Can't remember that it had a long . Looking on net...... see attached drawing..... or are these 2 different ? On checking the link of "Lost Soul" it does not show a long either...... The boat in the is a double ender, I think

It is a lot of boat (over 40 tonnes loaded!). Sorry, never owned a Formosa, so cannot speak from experience. Although the was (then) very attractive, I shyed away from this one 3 years ago. For three reasons: would be substantial, replacing would be expensive and sailing it single-handedly (think reefing) would be an enormous task.
On the other hand, love that boat.

of any yacht does not make (financial) sense.

Regarding single-handling, try to find a sister boat, and check with that owner. Of course you could ask the owner of 'your' boat, but chances are his/her reply will be biased to what you want to hear. And for the owner to take you out: likely not until you made a commitment to buy.

Here is some other info:

36mkii, and I fear that it might be too much for me...maybe I should go for a 45ft before jumping to the big leagues SO 45.1, not the same charms....

When we upgraded to the from our 28ft it was lovely at first sight..and now we we have a similar situation, but I might have to be sensible and go for the smaller one....

I could hand it: it had an excellent for the , slab reefing for the main with blocks sewn into the leech of the main at the reef points (which greatly reduced the effort to reef the 750 square foot main), lazy jacks, and an excellent auto pilot. Point is, you have to set things up to make it manageable.

Second thought: DECKS! They look ok in the photos, but back then decks were screwed down. If the decks aren't leaking now, they will be. Unless, of course, they've been recently replaced. $$$$

Good luck with your decision.

Boat: Hudson Force 50; 57' overall
built heavy blue-water cruiser, you'll love the way it and all the associated comforts. As for "too much boat," we went from a 36' (Cherubini design) to a Force 50 (sister ship to Formosa). No problems making the change! They are "needy girls" with all the systems that usually come with it, and all the teak trim to take care of. Luckily, ours had the teak decks replaced a couple of owners ago. Our top is still covered in teak, but it's all bonded with (no screws) and finishes up like new. Check in with Bob Bitchin, editor of Cruising Outpost, and former owner of the "Lost Soul." I spoke with him just last week about his time aboard. His comment after accepting an "offer he couldn't refuse" to sell the boat for way more than he had put into it, was that it was that he really regrets having let her go!

Boat: None at present--between vessels. Ex Piver Loadstar 12.5 metres
, and risk if you are sailing short-handed. Of course you could spend a fortune and re-rig the vessel to make it easier to single-hand, but it may be a better and safer option to buy a smaller and easier to manage vessel at the outset. I think a Tayana around 41 feet would do it--or a Formosa 41

I sailed my 40 ft into waters of about six feet without trouble--and these larger monos draw so much there are so many places one simply can not venture--and sometimes one needs to get closer to a sheltering island.

EVERYTHING is big and expensive on a larger boat--anchors, engines, winches, chains, masts are going to be tall--how do you feel about working aloft? Sail maintenance and will be very costly--as will all sailing tackle of all kinds--and I think you will need crew to take a fifty six footer .

Great to such a floating apartment though--

One should buy the smallest boat in which one can fit comfortably and sail safely.. You will go more places and spend less money--and probably lose less on eventual resale, because if you spend less on purchase you lose less on resale, costs of maintenance notwithstanding.

My $0.02 worth.

Boat: Vagabond 52 staysail schooner
voyage from to , MA. Ease of handling largely due to roller reefing/furling on main, mizzen, and . She was built in '77 and developed in the teak decking as well as around , causing some . If your teak decks are fastened by screws, not by or some other , rip up the teak and glass over the . We did, it came out well, and we are not boat builders. Process is simple and easy and not at all expensive if not done by professionals. If this isn't done, your will develop soft spots compromising strength, and doesn't stop... it keeps growing. Find and fill voids between caprail and , and any exterior joinery that shows signs of separation. Our served us very well, as did our (essential for the and chain weight you will require). Bottom painting gets expensive due to the square yardage, as does hauling the vessel for any reason. 56 ft is a lot of boat to care for... treatment, , dockage , maintenance, housecleaning, etc. Your boat will be sea kindly with a slower motion than the bobbly lightweights out there. Concern for sea conditions doesn't really begin until wave height gets up around 8 ft or more, and we found better speed once the gets up into the higher teens. In 25 knots and running under staysail, reefed main and slightly reefed mizzen, making 8 over the bottom was predictable. Not likely your vessel will point well for upwind sailing however. They're made for beam winds. And downwind they like to roll and yaw. We often adjusted course just enough to mitigate that. All that said, expect to stay busy maintaining your boat, and enjoy the comfort of size, weight, lots of living room, and lots of . PS because of the amount and types of we did on ours, we learned a great deal about her construction, materials to employ and more. If you have any questions about details, please us: .

Boat: '02 Jeanneau Sun Odyssy 43DS
SO 45.1 from 95. Needs TLC but it is within our and sailing capabilities, also running costs will be considerably lower.....After doing some at the local yards it seems that maintenance would be quite a burden.....we live in and yards are really expensive and much less choices to go for. I was quoted in the range of 5500USD just for the antifouling....and we don't have yards here to keep the boat in the dry for weeks while doing it myself (well there is one but at a ridiculously high price)

Again, thank you guys for the inputs and willingness to provide advice

Soul & Eric Stones song. I was her first mate on her shake down to & sailed on her to . I also did all of the journey on her. I loved the work shop I had on her also.
Sailing her was a dream, she was fast for her size, but the Soul had had a additional 10' added to her main & her Ballast had added weight.
I remember drilling holes in her Teak Decks & inserting to seal the leaks in the crews quarters & around the trunk . Built that big storage/sette box at the stern also.
Both Bob Bitchin & I have had over 35,000 NM at that time & setting her up for handling was EZ. Auto Pilot etc. Good luck, with your purchase, I've own a Formosa 40 & loved sailing up in Wa.

Exiled russian oligarch’s 257’ superyacht amaryllis seen towed through palm beach.

The Amaryllis being towed past the former mansion of Henry Flagler, built in 1902

By John Jannarone and Alan Hatfield

The 257’ superyacht Amaryllis apparently owned by exiled Russian oligarch Andrey Borodin was towed past Palm Beach, FL on Friday morning, according to a visual account by CorpGov .

The yacht, whose owner is frequently cited as Mr. Borodin by enthusiast publications, moved slowly through the Lake Worth lagoon where bridges were raised for its passage. A towboat with flashing lights about 150 feet ahead pulled the Amaryllis , built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in 2011.

While CorpGov could not officially confirm Mr. Borodin as the owner of the vessel, his wife, socialite Tatiana Korsakova, has posted dozens of Instagram photos and videos aboard the Amaryllis. A yacht broker interviewed by CorpGov confirmed that Ms. Korsakova is indeed aboard the Amaryllis in the photos and videos.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tatiana Korsakova (@tati_vk)

The sighting comes as billions of dollars in Russian-owned yachts have been seized around the world as a result of international sanctions. CNN has published an extensive list of seized vessels, which were taken in harbor cities including Mallorca, Spain and London.

However, it is unclear if the Amaryllis was being seized or voluntarily towed. Very large yachts often choose to be towed because bridges are required to raise for them, according to the yacht broker.

The former Bank of Moscow chief was granted political asylum in the UK in February 2013 after fleeing what he alleged to be politically-motivated fraud and embezzlement charges. Mr. Borodin would go on to be tried and convicted in abstentia in Russian Court in 2018, but not before managing to enlist a number of prominent American lawmakers to lobby Washington for a U.S. visa. Despite Russian extradition requests to the UK government, Borodin’s controversial attempts to make large donations to the NHS, and the uncovering of an assassination plot against his life, the fugitive banker remains overseas, having been granted access to his Swiss bank accounts and having made several notable London real estate purchases during his time in exile.

Mr. Borodin is widely listed as a billionaire, but his total wealth remains difficult to confirm accurately, with the governments of Switzerland and the Bahamas having been asked to help the Russian government in its legal case. In 2012, Borodin purchased the UK’s then-most expensive home, an 80-hectare 18th-century estate in Oxfordshire, for upwards of $217 million. In 2017 he was granted access to personal Swiss accounts holding a reported $378 million. The Amaryllis was purchased for a reported $120 million.

Mr. Borodin did not immediately respond to an emailed query from CorpGov , while the FBI declined to comment. An emailed query to The Department of Homeland Security was not returned.
