Rupert Holmes looks at effective options for onboard internet from 4G to WiFi boosters

Former ocean racer Pete Goss working from his yacht

After the COVID-19 pandemic has made remote working so widely accepted, could working from your yacht be part of the future? It’s no longer an expensive option: in the past couple of years the price of mobile data has plummeted, with unlimited plans now less than £25 per month.

In the UK, 4G reception around much of the coast is dire and often requires better equipment than in some far-flung parts of the world, but sensibly priced equipment can significantly boost a wifi or 3G/4G mobile signal. Look for products with fully waterproof omni-directional external antennas.

Connecting to marina wifi from a laptop is invariably hit-and-miss. Signals often struggle to get through the forest of masts and many marina WiFi systems suffer from low bandwidth at popular times.

WiFi boosters can therefore be a big help. I’ve regularly used an inexpensive model over a 400m distance with success. A higher specification unit, such as MailaSail’s WiFi Bat, has potential to communicate over a few miles in optimal conditions, yet the antenna is only 59cm tall and weighs less than 700g.

Digital Yacht’s WL510 WiFi Access System has a larger antenna and can either be plugged directly to a laptop’s ethernet port, or used with a router to produce an onboard wifi network for multiple users.

Similar devices can be used to boost a weak mobile phone data signal. Digital Yacht’s 4G Connect Pro (pictured below) has twin external 48cm-high performance antennas, plus a WiFi router. Maximum range is up to around 20 miles from shore, although sheltered river valleys and anchorages under steep cliffs may not have coverage.

coronavirus-sailing-Digital-Yacht-4G

At the top end of the scale products combine WiFi, mobile internet and satellite data. This hardware is, however, many times the cost of terrestrial-only systems, while data costs can literally be sky high.

MailaSail Wifi Bat – from £359 Digital Yacht WL510 – from £594, Connect Pro £690 Aquamare Pepwave Max BR1-LTE Marine 4G Wifi – £971

off topic I know but why get a special boat thing internet is internet just get a small mobile router and you can also use it elsewhere or leave it at the boat if you wish

This kind of Technology moves so fast that a dedicated system would be out of date very quickly. I've changed and upgraded my boat systems several times since I bought the boat. I just stick to cheaper domestic systems/routers etc

Many normal 4g routers have the ability to connect an external antenna with a long wire so you could place it externally as high as possible. You will generally find also that any router even the small ones have better ariels than Iphones. In our motor home I have on occassion put our small mobile router in a plastic bag on the roof. It gets a way better signal their than an Iphone. With the use you put your boat to I can understand why you want a better solution. Remember however Bespoke marine solutions to anything are normally 3 times the price they should be

Thank you for all your replies and useful info. I've not managed to find one positive review on the Digital Yacht system, regardless of how 'good' it looks. At the moment, I'm swayed towards a Teltonika RUT950 with Poynting Omni 493 (having conducted further research after reading responses). For those that are familiar with the Teltonika RUT950, does having a dual-sim setup mean you could, for example, have one sim on EE and the other on Vodafone, and therefore if there was a poor signal on one network there may be a chance of a better signal on the other?

Digital Yacht WL510 & 4G Connect review

It’s been around 6 months since I set off on a digital nomad-style experience on a sailboat with the Digital Yacht 4GConnect and WL510 , and I’m ready to give them some kind of initial review.

If you want to read some high-level details of this adventure, and other technical details of the boat, batteries, antennas and work, read the digital nomad boat experience post first.

Overall, they are 2 nice bits of kit, well-engineered and thought-through, but probably a bit expensive given the amount of use that I have managed to get out of them (less than I would have liked for a variety of reasons).

TLDR; If I were to start this trip again, I probably wouldn’t buy them again. However, for a different trip or situation, they might make more sense (cruising around the UK for example)

Installation

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

Both of the devices were easily wall mountable, and they come with all required cables and connectors, but I do wish that they both had switches included to turn them on and off, just in case you want to.

Due to the length of the antenna cables and the desire to put the antennas up our mizzen mast the positioning of the devices was not ideal, but at least we got the antennas up with a bit of height.

The Wifi antenna cable is also pretty thick, making usage of a rubber deck cable Gromit harder than we would have liked, as the cables also already have their ends attached and these are even thicker than the cables. (Of course, we could have made our own cables…)

Usage of the 4G Connect

The UI within the 4G connect is fine, fully featured and pretty easy to use. There isn’t much you need to do here if you are using the 4G Connect alone, but you’ll probably end up regularly changing things when using in conjunction with the WL510.

It’s nice having a large and high 4G antenna (part of the 4G Connect) to increase the chances of getting a 4G connection from your sim cards.

This has mostly been most useful for me while heading away from land or toward land at 5-20 nautical miles. I always get a connection on the 4G Connect before getting one on my phone and other devices. But in the grand scheme of things, this is not when most of my internet usage happens. It was a novelty being able to make a video call while in the middle of the sea, with the land only in distant sight, but not amazingly useful.

Another thing to note here is the antenna for the WiFi network that the 4G Connect creates doesn’t appear to create a very powerful network, and there is no option to increase the output of this. It is possible to get extension cables for this to put the antenna elsewhere, and this is what we had to do given the annoying placement of the device itself. (Don’t make your extension cable too long, or you’ll run into other issues)

4G Connect sim cards

The 4G Connect requires a physical sim card, which is slightly behind the times of modern technology (no option to have an ESim).

Changing the sim card is also not the easiest thing to do, as it requires dismantling the outer casing of the device.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

Sim card decisions can be hard. I set off with a couple of global unlimited sim cards to try. (If you want to read about global unlimited sim card options check out my comparison ).

But generally found that none of the physical sim card options did quite what I wanted.

Another thing to think about here is if you are buying physical sim cards, they are in this device and you want to go to shore for a day, you need to take apart the 4G connect if you want to take the sim car with you.

Usage of the WL510

In marinas, or places where you already know a wifi network exists, and you know the passcode then the WL510 is a great extender.

You log into the web interface, look at the list of networks available (always far more than you can see on a phone), type in the code, and connect.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

Depending on your configuration with the 4G Connect (or another WiFi hotspot) you’ll then have an internet connection!

50% of marinas that have WiFi, have WiFi that already works aboard without the WiFi extender, and 50% of marinas that we seem to be visiting now appear to not have WiFi.

It’s sometimes possible to find other nearby WiFi networks and their wifi codes but it all ends up being quite a lot of effort.

The WL510 doesn’t play amazingly nicely with captive portals which most “free” WiFi networks now employ. Especially when connected through the 4G Connect with any sort of rules to decide when to use WiFi and when to use 4G. I normally have to go and unplug the 2 devices, plugging the WL510 directly into my laptop to try to negotiate with any captive portals that I find. Doing this from my phone over WiFi seems to work 1% of the time.

So, on the whole :(

I bought the 2 devices from Cactus Nav (the cheapest I could find new ones for in the UK), totaling £1.2k

The order and delivery went smoothly, no complaints there

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

If I were to buy the same 2 items today from Digital Yacht UK the WL510 would be £618 and the 4G Connect would be 4G Connect would be £774 , totaling 1.4k, so prices have probably risen in the last 6 months.

Looking at this price, it’s too much. In hindsight, I would much rather have kept the money and spent it on more high-speed data on various sim cards where needed and a regular mobile wifi Hotspot such as the TP-Link 4G modem which I already own, or my Skyroam Solis hotspot .

To put this price comparison in real numbers, for £1.2k I would have bought 140 Solis unlimited global day passes , or more reasonably, 1 years worth of the Global Unlimited Solis subscription (with the current 50% discount available you could get 2 years).

Many boats are trying our Starlink RV for an internet connectivity option. I haven’t tried this out on Hannah, but I know of other boats that have a Starlink, and they quite like the solution (even though coverage isn’t global just yet).

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

In terms of cost, a Starlink would cost £500 to get delivered in the UK, and a year’s worth of RC service would be £1.1k, totaling £1.6k.

This total appears to be more than the Digital Yacht 4G Connect and WL510, but we need to remember with those devices the cost of sim cards and data for the 4G Connect are not included in that price. 1 year’s worth of the Global Unlimited Solis subscription with the current 50% discount would be roughly £500, bringing the Digital Yacht solution to £2k for the year, so cheaper than a Starlink? Maybe?

The monthly running costs of Starlink currently seem to be higher, even though the initial hardware costs less. However, in the future, this would come with truly global coverage, including (probably) the ability to page for GBs in the middle of oceans.

The best boat wi-fi – everything you need to know about staying connected onboard

Wifi for boats is an increasingly important consideration for many leisure sailors, who rely on apps and an internet connection for vital functions such as navigation and whether reports, as well as maintaining business connections or staying in touch with friends via social media. sam fortescue explores the options for the best onboard wifi – from routers to satellite services..

Some readers will relish the idea of dropping the mobile phone right to the bottom of their kit bag, where it can’t be heard for a few days, and setting off for a sail. But the reality of life is that we all need the internet close at hand, even on the boat.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

Myriad navigational tools are available online, from charting apps to weather, and even if you don’t always use them, it’s good to know they are there. These days, the mobile phone is considered the number one piece of safety kit aboard – it’s a key means of raising the alert if something goes wrong. And those who sail with children will testify to the balm-like effect of having some electronic entertainment on hand.

Readers of our magazines get a special discount on tickets to the Southampton International Boat Show. Find out more here .

Phones work well on board as long as you remain within sight of a cell tower. But nestled in under the cliffs of a wild anchorage, or cutting across Lyme Bay for instance, you might struggle to find enough network to connect. A host of electronic solutions to this problem have been developed, so there’s no reason to go without internet access any more, even in high latitudes. Whether you are a safety-only user, a social media addict or into streaming HD content, there’s a different gear package for you. We run through the options.

Boat wifi only – the budget option

The cheapest, but not always the easiest, way to get wifi on board is to use the marina’s (or other local hot-spot) wireless system. Connecting your phone or laptop to it directly is OK, but you often struggle to get a good connection, particularly below deck. That’s where a wifi booster is required.

At its simplest, you could mount a high-gain antenna on the pushpit that plugs directly into the USB socket of your laptop – ideal for downloading weather, checking the news or sending emails. Something such as Digital Yacht’s WL70 has a reported 1km (0.62miles) range. MailASail claims its Wifi Bat has connected to wifi up to 10 miles away, and Wave Wifi’s Rogue Wave claims up to seven miles’ range.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

If you’re sailing with family and friends who also want to get online, a shared connection is needed. Digital Yacht’s iKConnect wireless router would do the trick, combined with either the WL70 or the more powerful WL510 antenna. Alternatively, brands such as Wifi Onboard sell generic router and antenna packages.

Florida-based Wave WiFi has developed its MBR 500 router specifically for yachts. It offers a simplified user interface and connection to the Rogue Wave antenna via an Ethernet plug, which uses far less power than USB.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

MailASail makes a Red Box router that can select automatically between wifi, 4G and satellite comms, compress emails for faster transmission and network your instruments’ NMEA data. It is a great all-rounder, but perhaps too intricate if you just want wifi on board.

Boat wifi antennas

  • Digital Yacht WL70: £180
  • MailASail Wifi Bat: £358.80
  • Wave Wifi Rogue Wave: £tbc
  • Wifi Onboard: £185

Boat wifi routers

  • Digital Yacht iKConnect: £180
  • Wifi Onboard (antenna and router package): £300
  • MailASail Red Box: £580.80
  • Wave WiFi MBR 500: £tbc

Coastal flexibility

Marina wifi is often too slow to be useful, so a better bet is to use the mobile phone network, which has much higher data rates thanks to 4G (and soon 5G) coverage. Again, the cheapest way of doing this is to install a 4G router in the boat – you could even use a home mifi device (small, wireless devices that let multiple users and mobile devices share a mobile broadband internet connection.) Just plug in a mobile data SIM (monthly contract or pay-as-you-go) and access the internet wherever there is a mobile phone signal.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

MailASail’s Roam-Free 4-Gateway claims to boost the 4G signal nearly a thousandfold, giving it much better range. While Digital Yacht’s 4G Connect router and Wave WiFi’s MBR 550 can switch between shoreside wifi when it’s available and 4G. Croatia’s Locomarine is a more recent player in this field, and its Yacht Router Micro package combines an internal 4G router with an external wifi antenna (powered over Ethernet). It has a built-in SIM card slot and can be expanded with another SIM-card module to receive mobile data anywhere in the world.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

All of these units are certainly more powerful receivers than your mobile phone alone, but will still struggle more than a few miles from the cell tower or along cliffy coasts. For better range, pair the router with a dedicated high-gain mobile phone antenna on the pushpit, such as Digital Yacht’s 4G Connect Pro or Wifi Onboard’s Huawei router package. “Ranges up to 15-20 miles offshore have been achieved (mobile network tower location dependent),” says Paul Sumpner of Digital Yacht.

A combined antenna and router for mounting on deck makes for much simpler retrofitting, because you only need a power connection. In tests off Cape Finisterre, MVG’s NeptuLink delivered up to 100mbps download speed (enough to stream several HD movies simultaneously) as far as 22 miles offshore, and maintained some form of network connection at even greater range. It is designed specifically to deal with the way that radio waves propagate above the sea, as well as the pitching and rolling motion of boats at sea.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

Glomex’s Webboat 4G Plus also bundles the router and the antenna in the same external unit, but has a bigger profile with its dome. The system offers handy dual SIM card slots, and will switch between those and wifi for the best signal.

  • Digital Yacht 4G Connect: £390
  • MailASail Roam-Free 4-Gateway: £418.80
  • Wave WiFi MBR 550: £tbc
  • Locomarine Yacht Router: €1,210

  • Digital Yacht 4G Connect Pro: £660
  • Wifi Onboard 4G/wifi router: £675
  • Glomex Webboat 4G Plus: €1,049
  • MVG NeptuLink: c£2,000

Data everywhere

If you want to guarantee ultimate connectivity even mid-ocean, then there is only one option: satellite comms. Not only is the kit itself more expensive, but you pay a much higher rate per megabyte of data than you would via wifi or 4G. The sky is the limit here, with a money-no-object contract and tracking antenna dish capable of giving you megabits of bandwidth.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

Basic entry-level satellite connectivity is actually quite cheap. The bluewater sailor’s staple for many years has been an Iridium phone with built-in or external modem. It keeps you safe with the ability to make calls from anywhere on the world’s oceans, and offers dial-up internet access all for around £1,800-£2,200, including handset, cabling and antenna. Data is charged at $1.50 per minute, not per megabyte, and is very slow. Sending a couple of emails or downloading a small file might take five minutes, so you have to use good compression software.

“If you want weather access and to get good value from them, then there is a lot of value in purchasing through a specialist retailer who will give you aftermarket support and training,” says Ed Wildgoose of MailASail. “This is not an iPhone-like product that will work for all very simply out of the box. Internet speeds are pre-1990s dial-up rates.”

  • Iridium 9555: £1,018.80
  • Iridium 9522B: £1,918.80

The next step up would be a service such as Fleet One from Inmarsat, now offering up to 150kbps – roughly three times the speed of dial-up. It’s enough for weather routing, WhatsApp, blogging, email and sending occasional photos. Inmarsat’s free 505 safety service is built in, connecting you directly to the nearest search and rescue team in the event of distress, and you can use voice and data services at the same time – handy if you’re running a business from the boat.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

Iridium offers a faster 352kbps connection through the more expensive Certus system, which might also keep you in Facebook posts. Or for roughly the same installation cost, Inmarsat’s Fleet Broadband offers 550kbps. As well as the extra speed, it will give access to a suite of Inmarsat safety features from next year, including Distress Chat and safety messages for your region.

All are relatively easy to install, but hardware costs are up to five times higher (see right). Airtime, on the other hand, is much cheaper with a range of monthly subscriptions giving you a fixed amount of data, or unlimited data in a fixed geographical area. The cost of data on a high-volume contract can be less than 10 per cent of that on an occasional-use contract.

“Voice calls are generally better quality than the handheld phones,” explains Wildgoose. “Also, you generally have two-plus voice lines which can be useful for business users or people with guests on board (second bill for the guests). It’s still essential to use an optimisation service as compressed services still typically use 1/10th of the data and hence reduce your bills by a factor of up to 10x, but your range of options is so much greater.”

  • Iridium Certus: £7,199 plus data at $14.36-$1.08/MB
  • Inmarsat Fleet One: £3,594 plus data at $10.50 or $6.13/MB
  • Inmarsat Fleet Broadband: £5,331-£7,381 plus data from £328/m

If you really want to go to town with data aboard, you’ll need something such as a VSAT system, offering megabit download rates. These need to be custom installed and tailored to your yacht, so don’t expect to buy one off the shelf. A specialised installer will take care of that for you. You’ll be looking at something like the TracPhone V3-HTS from KVH, where a contract costing $1,100/m will buy you 2GB of data, or around $2,000 buys 5GB – all on the Intelsat network.

If that doesn’t sound like enough speed for you, then Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress is the top-of-the-line network service. Usually seen on superyachts and commercial vessels, it is powered by Ka-band satellites and offers download speeds of up to 10mbps for always-on connectivity. The terminals weigh upwards of 37kg and measure up to 1m in diameter, so this would only suit the most determined communicator with a large yacht.

  • KVH TracPhone V3-HTS: £17,400
  • Inmarsat Fleet Xpress: from £26,000, with monthly data from £1,312

Bytes, bits and speed

A megabyte is an amount of data – perhaps an image, file or song. Many data contracts limit the number of megabytes you can download each month

Kbps/mbps – this is a measure of how much data you can transfer per second – it is a measure of speed. Satellite contacts specify the maximum speed available to you. In general, the poorer the connection (whether wifi, 4G of satellite), the slower it is.

How much do I need?

  • Photo – typically around 1 megabyte
  • HD film – perhaps 5 gigabytes

And how fast?

  • Skype calls – 100kbps
  • Video calls – 300kbps
  • Facebook – 500kbps
  • Streaming video – 1.5mbps
  • HD video – 5.0mbps

Slow internet speed through wifi on my 4g router.

If you have a very low internet speed (less than 5m/sec) then several factors can interfere with your internet speed.

When a device is connected to one of our wireless 4G routers, the router has to “route” the data, which takes time. The typical 2.4GHz speed of 50Mbps is shared across all devices on the wireless network: more devices, less speed

It is not uncommon for other 2.4GHz wireless networks to be present on a modern boat; MFD, Charger/Inverter, AIS, etc. Each network, will potentially cause interference and slower speeds

To get a better speed, the best solution is to connect your laptop via Ethernet. With the 4G Connect Pro, you can get internet up to 60m/s via Ethernet but via WiFi, a good connection would be 25-35Mbps.

  • The first step is to check all your installation. Make sure there is no interference with your device’s 4G antennae (a nearby radar, for example). Antenna height is not as critical as VHF and better to mount lower and not increase antenna cable length. If installation demands longer cables we can supply 10m or 20m LMR400 cable assemblies. Don’t extend the standard 7m LMR200 cables.
  • Then, you should run a speed test on a wired device. Connect a device to the LAN socket of the 4GConnect via a network cable – this gives maximum speed and then do a speed test.
  • Another action is is to do a Wi-Fi Survey to see if you are getting interference and congestion. An external Wi-Fi network might interfer with your 4G router network and affect your internet speed. You can do a Wi-Fi survey test with the following article.

Boat remote access thought 4G – Port Forwarding to remote view CCTV system

Although the approach you are taking with DDNS and Port Forwarding would work well on a conventional land based network, that is connected to the internet via a Cable/ADSL router, there are several reasons why they may not work on a mobile network:

  • NAT (Network Address Translation): Mobile networks, especially those using IPv4, typically employ NAT to conserve IP addresses. NAT allows multiple devices to share a single public IP address. When you connect a device to a mobile network, it is assigned a private IP address that is not directly accessible from the internet. This makes it challenging for DDNS and port forwarding to function properly, as the mobile network’s NAT may not forward incoming connections to your device.
  • Carrier-Level Restrictions: Mobile network providers often impose restrictions on certain network activities for security or network management purposes. These restrictions can include blocking or limiting incoming connections to devices on their network. As a result, even if you set up DDNS and port forwarding correctly on your mobile device, the carrier may still prevent external access to it.
  • Firewall and Security Policies: Mobile networks commonly implement firewalls and security policies to protect devices on their networks from potential threats. These security measures may include blocking certain ports or protocols by default, which can interfere with port forwarding. Additionally, some carriers may employ strict security policies that prevent the modification of network settings necessary for DDNS or port forwarding to work properly.
  • Dynamic IP Addresses: Mobile networks typically assign dynamic IP addresses to devices. This means that the public IP address assigned to your device can change periodically or when you reconnect to the network. DDNS relies on associating a domain name with your IP address, so if your IP address changes frequently, the DDNS service may not be able to keep up and point to the correct IP address for remote access.

It’s worth noting that some mobile network providers may offer specific plans or services that allow for more open network access or even static IP addresses, which can facilitate DDNS and port forwarding. However, these options may come with additional costs and may not be available on all networks or in all regions.

Overall, the combination of NAT, carrier restrictions, firewall policies, and dynamic IP addresses on mobile networks can make it challenging for DDNS and port forwarding to function reliably. If you require remote access to devices on a mobile network, you may need to explore alternative solutions such as VPN (Virtual Private Network) or cloud-based services that facilitate remote access without relying on DDNS or port forwarding.

Our 4G products (4GConnect and 4GXtream) provide good internet connectivity over 4G mobile networks and we know that they are used by some of our customers to remotely access their marine systems.

To remotely access the systems on a boat, the normal method is for the equipment on the boat to initiate a secure connection to a cloud server and then you use an App on your mobile device to also access the cloud server. The cloud server then routes you through to your boat’s data, which you can view in almost realtime. This method relies on the equipment manufacturer creating the cloud system and app to make this happen. The best example of this type of system is the Victron VRM system.

The second method is to use a VPN service to create a more generic cloud connection, not specific to one manufacturer, which basically connects your mobile device to the boat’s Ethernet network. Once the VPN connection is established, you can remotely do anything that you would normally do when on the boat.

Setting up a VPN on our 4G Products is possible, but requires networking knowledge and is not something that Digital Yacht is able to provide support on. You would need to find a suitably experienced IT networking engineer.

If you want to explore the VPN solution, I would recommend ZeroTier which can be installed on our 4GXtream and is a free and relatively easy to setup VPN service, that I played with a few years back. OpenVPN is also supported on our 4GXtream.

Manual APN Settings for latest EE SIM cards

Since the end of 2022, we have started receiving support requests from new EE customers that cannot get their Digital Yacht 4G Products to work with their EE SIM.

It would appear that recent EE SIMs have a Virgin Mobile profile included, which is seen as the default APN settings when our products are set to Auto APN mode (default). If your SIM is being correctly read, you are getting a good mobile signal strength, the STATE is shown as “Registered (home); EE; 4G (LTE)” but the DATA CONNECTION is shown as Disconnected, then please try the following settings.

Open a browser, go to http://192.168.1.1 and login to the web interface. Now change to ADVANCED mode by clicking on the word BASIC in the top right corner of the web interface. On the menu select NETWORK>INTERFACES and you will see the page below….

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

Click on the “Pencil” Edit icon for the SIM slot the EE SIM is inserted in – MOB1S2A1 in the example above.

Now you need to set Auto APN to OFF and enter the following details in the boxes that appear. Also make sure that PDP Type is set to IPv4 Only and not IPv4/IPv6 which is the default…

Once all of the settings are correctly entered, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “SAVE & APPLY” button. Give the unit 20-30 seconds to apply the settings and reboot the modem and then you should see the DATA CONNECTION change to Connected and you will be online.

Connecting other Marine Electronic Equipment to our 4G Products

Many products from leading marine electronics manufacturers now feature a wired and/or wireless network interface. In some larger systems such as those from Navico/Garmin/Raymarine/Furuno, the MFDs, radar scanners, cameras and sonar systems will all be networked together via Ethernet cables. When one of our 4G Products is used as the central wireless router for internet connectivity, some customers have been confused as to whether they can join all of the devices together on one common network.

In general, unless indicated differently by the MFD manufacturer, it is best to leave the manufacturer’s wired Ethernet network, just for connecting the manufacturer’s equipment together and if you want to provide the system with an internet connection, to do this by connecting the master MFD wirelessly to our 4GXtream.

This will result in having two wired Ethernet networks on the boat, one for the navigation equipment and the other for internet access and normal IT type networking, but it will result in the most reliable operation of the two networks.

Most MFD manufacturers do not want customers to open up their Ethernet network to either a conventional LAN or WAN environment that they have no control over. Unknown network devices, levels of network data and protocols, can create interoperability issues that the manufacturer has never tested for, potentially having a serious, negative effect on the operation of their equipment.

The MFD’s wireless interface will be on a separate subnet and “locked down” so that it just does what they need it to do and no more. When you tell the wireless interface to join another wireless network in STATION (STA) mode, rather than its default ACCESS POINT (AP) mode, it will get an IP Address for the wireless interface from the 4GXtream and be able to go online for updates, weather data, etc.

4GConnect Power Consumption

The following power consumption figures are applicable to both our 4GConnect and 4GConnect Pro models.  Power consumption does vary significantly, depending upon the amount of mobile data being transferred and how much wired/wireless network activity is taking place.

Below are the average consumption figures for 12v and 24v systems…

Minimum – Powered up but no mobile or network data transfer = 1W

N ormal – Powered up with a couple of network devices doing light internet access = 1.5W

Maximum – Powered up with multiple network devices doing heavy internet access = 4.25W

Advanced Diagnostic Tests for our 4G/5G Products

In some situations, our 4G Products can appear to be connected to the internet, but due to other external conditions such as AV Software, ISP issues or local network settings, you cannot access websites from your browser. If this happens, there are some additional tests and checks that can be carried out.

Go to SYSTEM>ADMINITSTRATION>TROUBLESHOOT and do the following tests….

Voice Calls With 4G Connect Pro

Our 4G Connect product has been super popular this year with remote working on board becoming the new normal.  It provides fast internet access using LTE with ranges up to 15-20NM offshore and connection speeds up to 70MBs.  It is a data only product however and while you could use What’s App or Face time for voice calls, some boater’s want a better voice solution.

Step forward to voice over IP – a technology that’s used in just about every modern office phone system where phone calls are made over the internet.  This can be easily configured on a 4G Connect system – all you need is a VOIP provider and a IP based phone.

digital yacht 4g connect pro review

We’re tested the solution with Voipfone (www.voipfone.co.uk) and used Snom handsets as the IP phone.  In fact, Voipfone can supply a preprogrammed Snom phone ready to plug into the LAN port of the 4G Connect.  Voipfone is a cloud based VOIP provider – you can setup a land line number for your boat, transfer calls and even have a PBX/switchboard type system.  There are many VOIP providers but our experience with Voipfone has always been good.
