A cross-Channel sailing boat ferry is expected to start carrying passengers to France later this year after a successful trial.
The company behind the initiative, SailLink, bought a catamaran in France and is having it certified in the UK to take passengers.
Called Echoes, it will carry 12 passengers with bicycles, and make a return trip each day between Dover and Boulogne-sur-Mer, Pas-de-Calais, depending on the tides.
“Going to Boulogne, an ebb tide will help us, and the idea is to return a couple of hours later when the flood tide will reverse the current and get us to Dover quicker,” said Andrew Simons-Stotz, SailLink’s founder.
“Most days we will be on the water for 10 hours.”
'Alternative to planes'
Having raised €400,000 to buy the boat and get it ready for inspection, SailLink is still looking for investors for the extra €50,000-€100,000 needed to start operations.
It is offering a five-year loan/bond, with 5% interest, based on the value of the boat.
Tickets will cost around €100 one way. The sailing schedule for this year, from July, should be available on the company’s website in June.
“We want to show there is an alternative to taking ferries or aeroplanes, which produces a lot less carbon dioxide,” said Mr Simons-Stotz.
“From our trial runs we know that most of our clients are more adventurous types, often heading off for walking or cycling holidays.”

Clients can usually help to sail the boat once it has cleared the busy ports.
It has a berth in both Dover and Boulogne-sur-Mer with car parking nearby, although some clients arrive by train.
In addition to its sails, the catamaran is equipped with two motors which run on biodiesel. The company plans to put in a diesel-electric hybrid motor next winter.
SailLink is also recruiting sailing staff, with each trip having a captain and a crew member on board.
Candidates must have commercial licences.
The catamaran will be registered in the UK, but the firm is also opening a French unit to help with the paperwork required to operate from France.

Sailing yacht to run catamaran ferry service from Dover to Boulogne
Monday, September 5th, 2022
Written by: Marine Industry News
Dover is being re-connected with Boulogne in northern France by a pioneering cross-channel service. A sailing yacht is being used as ferry service, to transport foot passengers, cycle tourists and small groups.
The new SailLink ferry service will use purpose-built sailing vessels to take a maximum of 12 passengers between Dover in England and Boulogne in France.
The pilot phase with the first passengers will take place from 10-18 September 2022. Pioneer and supporter tickets can be booked through the company’s website, as well as sponsorship opportunities for interested partners. Prices for the pilot phase are £85 for an adult one-way, and £150 for a return.
SailLink says its service will access the commercial pontoons of marinas, thereby connecting passengers with the cultural centres rather than the out-of-town vehicle terminals.
Founder and director Andrew Simons is a boatbuilder, sailor, environmental scientist and, for many years, a regular traveller between the UK and the European continent. He says that SailLink was conceived as the solution to his own preferences and requirements in getting across the English Channel.
Together with Jim Duerden, a highly-experienced sailor and the only RYA catamaran sailing instructor in the UK, the practical and regulatory feasibility of the concept was explored, and a potentially suitable first route was defined.
This first route where a sailing yacht is used to run a ferry service will be between Dover and Boulogne-sur-Mer, with a crossing time of approximately four hours.
“In the first year, we intend to achieve one return crossing per day,” says Simons. “Border formalities will be conducted on departure and arrival by the mobile border agents. Passengers can go from the harbour café onto the boat within 30 mins and the same at the other end. This makes the total crossing time no longer than for a conventional ferry considering the time taken to arrive at the terminal, clear border controls and board the vessel.”
The SailLink routes are said to be designed according to the prevailing winds and tidal streams as well as the accessibility and suitability of the ports. The visitor attractions, onward connection via public transport or connection with cycle routes, are examples of the criteria considered. During the crossing, passengers have the option of joining in with the sailing or helping with regular marine sampling and observations for the company’s research partners.
“Our vessels will be fast, commercial sailing catamarans fitted with electric propulsion for port access, maintaining the schedule and providing a quiet, clean and regenerative form of auxiliary power,” Simons continues. “The company will work with the vehicle ferry operators to carry its passengers and maintain their travel itineraries when weather conditions would make a specific crossing uncomfortable.”
SailLink says its ambition is not only to provide a ‘fantastic and convenient’ passenger experience, but also highly-rewarding career perspectives for its employees as well as inspiring high-performance innovation in commercial sailing vessels.
“We want to provide professionals with a serious sailing job that they can combine with daily shore commitments such as family, and to challenge a UK-French collaboration in the design and construction of a sailing vessel equivalent to the Concorde,” says Simons.

Le Portel is an old fishing port full of character which appeals to families and nature lovers alike.
Sheltered by the harbour of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Le Portel’s star attraction is its beach! Extending over one and a half kilometres, there is plenty of room here for children and adults to run about and enjoy water sports or activities on the beach. A top place for things to do, mussel collecting can also be enjoyed, especially around the area of Fort d’Heurt. The fort is accessible at low tide and boasts the largest natural mussel bed on the Côte d'Opale!
A choice of several walks
The resort has many parks and gardens and is perfect for enjoying a good walk. Overlooking the sea, the Parc de la Falaise alone offers 27 hectares in which to relax among its lakes and recreational areas. Feast your eyes on a breathtaking view over the beach after climbing to the top of Mont de Couppes. Fort de l'Heurt and even Fort d'Alprech and the lighthouse can be seen in the distance. This historic site was built towards the end of the 19th century and can easily be reached via the coastal path!
Fishing heritage
Le Portel is a former fishing port and has retained strong links with its maritime past. The iconic ‘Flobarts’ are still a well-known sight on the beach. These small flat-bottomed boats have a pointed bow and are square at the stern (!). They still go out to sea occasionally to fish for sole, plaice, cod, bass, mackerel, crab and even lobster! It is a unique sight, as they have to be towed on the beach by tractors.
A carnival not to be missed
Much like Dunkirk, Le Portel is very proud of its carnival. The whole town celebrates for three days before Shrove Tuesday. Costumed groups and decorated floats take over the town centre for everyone to enjoy in a feast of colour. After the processions on Sunday, the ‘Pec-Pec’, which takes place on Monday, is one of the event’s highlights. Carnival-goers dressed in fishermen’s oilskins congregate to amuse the children. On Tuesday, after an action-packed day, everyone gathers to take Bâtiss, the mascot to the bonfire!
