What do you need kerosene for today? Of course, it is used as a fuel for some special lamps, like earlier ones. But today this is a cleaning agent with a wide range of applications. If you look on the Internet, you will find detailed suggestions for the purpose. E.g. removing verdigris from brass objects. or water stains made of painted wood, or for cleaning the marble floors. But as always, you should first take a compatibility test in an invisible place. Yachticon special blue petroleum is a highly purified special petroleum, almost odourless and leaves no residue. It comes in a sturdy, corrosion-resistant container. Tax beneficiary, mineral oil product - must not be used as fuel, heating or for the production of such substances.

Stephan Thanks for info. I will try to get datasheet for "Diamant" kerosene. I will also have a look for Shellsol T in Czech Republic and will try buy Pre-Pac Paraffin Extra in UK (and new vaporizer too ) Maybe, you can look at Yachticon Spezial Blau, it should be isoparaffin too. Link: http://www.bootskram.com/shop/product_info.php/info/p7039_YACHTICON-Spezial-Blau-Petroleum-5-Liter.html
Hello Jiri and Stephan, Pre-Pac paraffin is sold in 4 litre plastic drums in the UK., and it varies in price a lot, from £7 upwards. Depending on where you are in the UK., there are still places where one can turn up with a drum and fill it with paraffin and it's a lot cheaper, so take some 20 litre drums with you. Another fuel which folk use is barbecue fluid and it's often sold off cheaply in the winter. So far, the quality of British paraffin has not caused problems with any of my lamps. Some of the American collectors have mentioned that the quality of their paraffin/kerosene varies, Jeff.
Hello Jeff, last time, I had a problem on ferry with just really small knife (they told that it is offensive weapon or something so stupid because it had a pocket clip) on the way from UK. I would like to ask you if there will be problem with 20l of kerosene or not in the car on ferry. What do you think? Stephan: I found that "Diamant" kerosene is actually this one: http://www.cago.de/shopexd.asp?id=15352 Do you know that? Did you try? Shellsol T is in my country for about 40Euro/3l. Not a good deal. Jiri
Hello Jiri, I do not see why there should be, folk carry cans of petrol in the boots of their cars and that is a far more volatile fuel than paraffin/kerosene. Sometimes officials can be petty though, Jeff.

Hi Jiri, going to the UK I guess you'll take a ferry from France? Surely you'll be able to find 20liter pre-packed paraffin in France? In Belgium, every Do-it-Yourself store (Brico, Gamma, Hubo to name just a few) has 20l plastic drums with fuel for Zibro Kamin and similar heaters, these cost approx.30€ .I myself buy "at the pump" and pay approx. 1€ per liter (it's been a while since I last got some, summer 2011 it was still under 1€/liter). Best regards, Wim
here is another example what can happen with bad kero this is a vap on a X410A

Damn anyone want to trade my new M320 for Petromax? Jiri, alebo si budes si Izokerozin? Ja este tu pupicku musim nejako opravit
I just want to mention the alternative "brass vapouriser" again. A guy in Germany makes them and sells them on hytta-antik.de. Here is the link for the Vapalux/Bialaddin-type: http://hytta-antik.de/index.php?p=detail&id=904 He also offers vaps for Tilleys. The big advantage is that you can unscrew the jet in case there has carbon built up in the vap. So it is easily to clean out what with the original vaps is impossible. In case the jet is worn you can replace it with a Petromax jet (250cp). With this vap you would have the option to use paraffin that you can buy locally.
That is a very good option and will save a lot of money for a user lantern
The only "disadvantage" of the brass vapouriser is that the tank of the lamp will get warmer because the brass conducts the heat better than steel. The guy who produces them knows about this and has made vaps with a reduced wall thickness in the middle section to lower the amount of heat that is brought to the tank. It works well but with a steel vap the tank stays "colder".
I said: I have one Vapalux M320 myself, and it was absolutely unused when I got it. Strangely enough I never got it to work properly. Click to expand...
Hello Christer, it looks good in the snow, very atmospheric! Jeff.
Thanks Jeff! Snow always lift a picture of our lanterns. It would with table lamps too, but unfortunately it would be quite a bit out of context to put those out in the open.
Hello, today, new vaporizer made by Dirk Frieborg arrived. Here are some pictures and video. I am very happy with it, but you need to use jet cleaner often. Thanks to StephanE for reference. I also installed 250HK jet to my Petromax 829B and it works perfectly. Bright, less fuel consumption etc. Petromax+Vapalux+Hasag: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z204oN3vls Edit: Pictures removed, all in this video: Vapalux M320 new vaporizer and mantle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAsvdiAQ-Ng
Hi Jiri, glad you were able to obtain a brass vapouriser, to have to use the jet cleaner often seems to me a sign of conventional paraffin. I made the same experience when using ordinary paraffin. When using Shellsol T I don't have to use the pricker that often, an additional sign for me that Shellsol T doesn't built up that much carbon in the vapouriser. The big advantage for you is that you can use the paraffin that is available locally (and cheaper) and just in case of a carbon built-up you can dismantle the vapouriser to clean it. I think a good compromise
Jiri, I forgot: Great videos. We both should ask Dirk for royalties, me recommending his product and you making an advertising video
Thanks to all, i need to order vaporizer, too. We are using the same paraffin

Hello, I am happy you like videos. Thanks again to StephanE for reference of brass vapo. Jiri
Got vaporizer from Germany Now need to dismatle my vapalux Is there any guide or something special to check while diassembling? Thank you
Yes tese are a good replacement. Here is a do it yourself .
Alex, glad to hear you got the vapouriser. There is nothing special to pay attention for. Just have a look at the cleaning needle, it is enough if it comes out of the jet about 0,5mm. You can adjust this by using a file to shorten the lower end of the cleaning needle rod or by using a thicker seal between control cock and brass vapouriser.
A little update after 3 years: Brass vaporizer helped a lot, but not 100 %. I think that 250HK jet is too much for local kerosene too. The "flame of the lantern" looked like "too much fuel, too little oxygen". I think it needs smaller jet. Will try to install 150CP jet. Also brass vaporizer is much better heat conductor, so lantern at all takes a lot of heat quickly. Will try to make vaporizer by myself with thinner walls (less conductance) and "missing brass" will replace with PTFE. Jiri
Jiri, any updates about your self-made vapourizer?
Hi, Coming back to this old topic... Just experienced (again) swollen vaporiser and spigot in my Bialaddin 300X lantern. Above in the dialogue it was proposed that the used fuel (kerosene) wasn't proper one as a root cause. Still wondering about the root cause. I have two other Bialaddins, running on same fuel, but it is the second time with the same lamp I'm having the problem thus I think the problem is more on the fuel and air mix causing the overheating rather than the fuel itself, I believe. Maybe too much air vs fuel causing the overheat? This was visible as I was running two 300X lanterns side by side: When I shut down the lanterns, the one having the problem had spigot glowing really bright red, and the other one not. How to control the air mixture in Bialaddin/Vapalux lanterns? Should I change the burner as well? -tommi
Hello Tommi, I have an X246B which keeps doing this too. I have also read the idea that the fuel is to blame but I find that theory hard to believe. If the fuel is cracking inside the vapouriser, depositing carbon, it will surely block itself long before the walls of the tube bulge and swell. I think this is exactly as you wrote - running too hot. The metal softens and that is when swelling happens. But why does it run too hot? Yes mixture can have something to do with it, but is it really enough for that? I have come to think it's about heat transfer away from the top of the vapouriser and spigot. There isn't anywhere much for it to go except up to the main body of the burner. The amount going down the vapouriser tube by conduction will be small I reckon. So I have come to think that it matters the vapouriser has good contact with the spigot and that the spigot has good contact with the main burner body. That is what takes the heat away and prevents red hot running. I know my X246B is not all perfect in that area and I think that is why it swells vapourisers. One day I will but a new burner, spigot and vapouriser in it but to be honest it has had all the money I am willing to spend thrown at it. It isn't worth following that with more. One day I will find a basket case with a decent burner and only then will it get the vapouriser I am unwilling to fit knowing it will in all probability follow the others. Next time I will be running in for short periods and checking for red hot running. Best of luck.
The reason that the fuel was suspected initially was because this swelling problem occurred abroad. Since the lanterns might be assumed to be 'much of a muchness', all being produced in the same UK factory, it was reasonable to think it was an external factor causing the issue. Now, if the same problem is occurring here in the UK, maybe we need to look for other possible causes. However, I still wouldn't necessarily rule out fuel as the culprit because it's quite possible the UK spec has been changed to match the European one. In any case, it's well known that fuel volatility has been lowered here progressively over the years and that might be the nub of the problem...

A Blue Moscow Guppy is a specific and highly sought-after variety of the common aquarium fish, the Guppy ( Poecilia reticulata ). These guppies are characterized by their stunning blue coloration, which sets them apart from other guppy varieties. Blue Moscow Guppies have a vibrant and iridescent blue hue covering their bodies, which can range from light blue to deeper shades of blue.
These fish are a product of selective breeding, which has been carried out to enhance and stabilize the beautiful blue coloration. Moscow Guppies, which are the ancestors of the Blue Moscow variety, were originally from Russia and Ukraine. Through careful breeding practices, the striking blue color became a defining feature of the Blue Moscow Guppy.
In addition to their captivating blue color, Blue Moscow Guppies generally have long and flowing fins, which add to their visual appeal. Their small size, peaceful nature, and adaptability to a wide range of water conditions make them a popular choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. These guppies are often used in breeding programs to create and maintain their unique coloration, making them a valuable and beloved addition to freshwater aquariums.
The Blue Moscow Guppy originated in Russia and Ukraine, and it is a result of selective breeding. It’s believed that the original Moscow Guppy had a wild-type coloration and a unique, plump body shape. Over time, selective breeding led to the development of the striking blue Moscow variety. The intense blue coloration in these fish is a result of specific genetic traits, and it’s essential to maintain this trait through careful breeding practices.
One of the primary attractions of Blue Moscow Guppies is their stunning appearance. These fish exhibit unique characteristics that make them stand out in any aquarium.
Proper tank size and setup are crucial for the health and well-being of your Blue Moscow Guppies.
Setting Up the Perfect Home for Your Blue Moscow Guppies
Creating a cozy and safe space for your Blue Moscow Guppies is super important. We’ll break down how to set up a guppy tank in simple steps, perfect for both beginners and experienced fish lovers.
Tank Size : First, you need to pick the right tank. For a small group of Blue Moscow Guppies, a 10-gallon tank is just right. If you can, go bigger with a 20-gallon long tank, so your fish have more room to swim and play. Bigger tanks are also easier to keep clean, which keeps your guppies healthy.
Filter : A good filter is like a superhero for your tank. It keeps the water clean and healthy for your guppies . The Aquaclear HOB filter or a sponge filter are both great choices. Aquaclear filters are awesome because they work really well, and they’re easy to take care of. Sponge filters are gentle, which is great for guppy babies. They’re like a cozy hideout for the little ones.
Substrate : The stuff at the bottom of the tank is called the substrate. Guppies like fine gravel or sand. It’s comfy for them, and it looks natural. CaribSea and Seachem are brands that make good substrates. Be sure to rinse it well before you put it in the tank to get rid of any dust and dirt.
Heater : Guppies are tropical fish so they need warm water. To keep the temperature just right, you need a heater. Heaters from brands like Eheim, Fluval, and Aqueon are super at keeping the water just the way guppies like it. Make sure to pick a heater that’s the right size for your tank.
By following these steps, you’ll have a comfy home ready for your Blue Moscow Guppies. They’ll love the space, the clean water, and the warmth. Plus, you can watch them swim and play in their beautiful tank. So, get started and enjoy your underwater adventure with your guppy friends!
Maintaining the right water parameters is essential for the well-being of your Blue Moscow Guppies.

Guppies are adaptable fish, but maintaining stable and appropriate water conditions is crucial to prevent stress and diseases.
Feeding your Blue Moscow Guppies is like hosting a delicious buffet for your underwater friends. Let’s dive into what to feed them, including some yummy options you can find online.
Remember, when shopping online for guppy food, read reviews and check the seller’s ratings to make sure you’re getting top-quality products. Your guppies will thank you for the tasty meals, and you’ll love watching them grow, thrive, and flaunt their vibrant Blue Moscow colors. Feeding time is a chance to bond with your fish and make sure they’re happy and healthy. Enjoy the feeding frenzy!
Guppies, including Blue Moscow Guppies, are susceptible to various diseases. Being informed and proactive is essential to keep your fish healthy.
White cysts on the body and fins, flashing behavior | Use a suitable ich treatment. Raise the temperature to 86°F (30°C) to speed up the parasite’s life cycle.
Torn, frayed, or disintegrating fins | Isolate affected fish and treat with antibiotics. Improve water quality.
Bloated appearance, raised scales | Isolate affected fish, treat with antibiotics, and improve water quality. |
Preventing diseases is as crucial as treating them. Maintain excellent water quality, avoid overstocking, and quarantine new fish before adding them to your main tank.
Choosing suitable tank mates is essential to ensure a peaceful and harmonious aquarium community.
Avoid aggressive or nippy fish like some tetras and barbs, as they may stress or harm your Guppies.
Breeding Blue Moscow Guppies can be a rewarding experience. These fish are prolific breeders, and their vibrant colors make the offspring equally stunning.
Incorporating live plants into your Blue Moscow Guppy’s tank not only enhances the aesthetics but also contributes to their well-being.
While live plants can thrive in Blue Moscow Guppy tanks, it’s essential to monitor their growth and trim them as needed to prevent overcrowding.
Blue Moscow Guppies, while not extremely rare, are considered a specialty variety. They may not be as readily available as the more common guppy strains, but they are still popular in the aquarium hobby. The availability of Blue Moscow Guppies can vary depending on your location and the suppliers in your area. You may need to visit reputable local fish stores or search online to find these beautiful guppies. Keep in mind that the popularity of guppy strains can fluctuate, and some passionate breeders may specialize in Blue Moscow Guppies, making them more accessible.
For beginners and small tanks, it’s recommended to keep a small group of guppies together. A good starting point is to keep 3 to 5 guppies in a 10-gallon tank. This allows them to socialize and exhibit their natural behaviors. However, if you have a larger tank, you can keep more guppies. Just be cautious not to overcrowd the tank, as proper space and water quality are essential for their well-being.
Taking care of guppies is perfect for beginners in the aquarium hobby. Here’s a simple guide:
Yes, guppies, like most aquarium fish, benefit from a cycled tank. A cycled tank means that beneficial bacteria have established themselves in the aquarium and can convert harmful ammonia and nitrites into less harmful nitrates. This biological filtration process helps maintain good water quality, which is essential for the health of your guppies.
Cycling a tank is especially important in the early stages of setting up your aquarium. It ensures that your tank is capable of handling the waste produced by your guppies and helps prevent harmful spikes in ammonia and nitrite levels. To cycle a tank, you can add a source of ammonia (e.g., fish food or pure ammonia) and allow the beneficial bacteria to develop over a few weeks. Once the tank is cycled, it’s ready for your guppies.
In summary, Blue Moscow Guppies are not extremely rare but are considered a specialty variety. For beginners, start with a small group of guppies, maintain proper tank conditions, and ensure your tank is cycled to provide the best care for these lovely fish. Enjoy your guppy-keeping journey!
Blue Moscow Guppies are a striking addition to any aquarium, admired for their captivating colors and unique appearance. To ensure the well-being of these beautiful fish, it’s crucial to pay attention to tank size and setup, maintain proper water parameters, provide a balanced diet, and be vigilant about diseases and their prevention. When considering tank mates, compatibility is key, and for those interested in breeding, following best practices will lead to a rewarding experience. By incorporating live plants, you create an environment that not only showcases their beauty but also supports their health. Whether you’re a seasoned aquarist or a beginner, Blue Moscow Guppies can be a fascinating and rewarding addition to your aquatic hobby.
In this ultimate guide on how to set up a guppy fish tank we will be going through the steps on guppy fish tank setup.
