Superyacht Helipads on Charter: What You Need to Know

A helipad is the ultimate luxury convenience for anyone in a hurry to start their dream yacht charter vacation, yet although it seems these days every self-respecting superyacht boasts a helipad - or two - few are actually commercially certified for helicopter landings. So, the question remains: is a non-certified helipad just a waste of space on a yacht charter?

To clear things up, we have compiled our guide on everything you need to know about superyacht helipads, as well as some of the best charter yachts already equipped with fully-certified helicopter platforms for those wishing to kick off their luxury yacht charter in style.

Helicopter lands onboard MY Suri

In this article:

A commercially-certified helipad is a must

Can you use a non-certified helipad on a yacht charter, private helipads, ‘touch and go’ helipad, charter guest benefits, 6 stand-out superyachts with a fully-certified helipad, 1. la datcha, 2. cloudbreak, 3. madsummer, 5. flying fox, interested in booking a luxury yacht charter.

For this classification, a superyacht helipad must be constructed and operated in line with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY3) Annex 6, which is basically the technical standards for helicopter landing areas, or helipads.

Helipad onboard MY Ragnar

This code sets out the basic rules governing the design, construction and operation of a helipad, which includes important factors such as a yacht’s load bearing capacity, obstacle clearance, consideration of airflow, safe access points, lighting, permanent deck markings and relevant crew training on helicopter operations.

yacht with helicopter storage

The responsibility for the survey and certification process for a helipad intended for commercial use is shared between the yacht’s registered flag state, the classification society and an aviation inspection body, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ).

All in all, it doesn’t leave much wiggle room for winging it.

In a nutshell, no.

Helicopters are not permitted to touch down on a non-certified helipad onboard a yacht that is being used commercially, i.e. for charter, unless for a medical emergency such as the evacuation of sick or injured passengers.

yacht with helicopter storage

A helipad or helideck is considered a commercial operation if used to either;

  • Receive commercial charter helicopters, or
  • Transport charter guests

Therefore, even a yacht being used privately by its owner cannot receive a commercial charter helicopter if the helideck is not certified.

The ICAO have also weighed in on this point, stipulating that “all commercial air transport helicopters should land on certified helipads which must be built according to certain standards”.

Private helipads onboard a yacht adhere to less stringent rules and therefore do not have to meet the commercial standards for certification.

We find many owners are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aesthetic of the yacht

Aft helipad with sun loungers onboard MY Luna B

That's not to say that non-certified helipads aren’t safe, as for the most part they will have been designed with the regulations in mind. However, more often a yacht’s visual appeal is advocated over the practicalities of helipad design. Chris Wood, a helidecks operations manager with Safeguard Helidecks Certification agrees: “We find many owner's are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aethestic of the yacht."

This snazzy term has become synonymous with luxury superyachts, although it technically has no meaning. For clarity's sake, unless specified ‘touch and go’ helipads are not certified and therefore cannot be used for commercial operations i.e. yacht charters, with the exception of medical emergencies.

MY O'Ptasia

This can cause some confusion, especially as these types of helipads are often highlighted as a stand-out feature when marketing a yacht for charter.

A certified helipad onboard a yacht is a major bonus for yacht charterers wishing to expedite their travel time and arrive in style. Other advantages include;

  • Quick and easy access to and from the yacht
  • Avoids wasting time in heavy traffic
  • Avoids lengthy tender rides to yachts out on anchor
  • Provides an opportunity for guests to explore their surroundings further
  • Ideal jumping off point for extreme sports such as heli skiing
  • Useful for corporate charter events
  • Safe and comfortable transportation option

We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters

As for non-commercial helipads, it can also be used for medical emergencies.

In conclusion, a fully operational helideck is an increasingly desirable feature onboard a charter yacht, which has led to a growing demand for helipad certification. Chris Woods at Safeguard Helidecks Certification confirms this is one of their biggest growth areas: "We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters".

So, although there are currently only a handful of charter yachts offering certified helipads right now, the future looks bright.

We have hand-picked a selection of top-rated superyachts equipped with a commerical landing platform for the ultimate luxury yacht charter.

Yachts with Helipad

Charter yachts are known for offer the best in first-class travel. Wake up each morning in your own private stateroom, and take in the sunrise over the Mediterranean, Caribbean or Adriatic, while a member of the crew brings you a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

Doesn’t get better than that, right? Not to mention, superyachts are laden with amenities, from water toys, to immaculate interiors, and sun-soaked decks, perfect for relaxing. Yet, there’s one feature that’s available on only a select group of charter yachts: Helicopter pads .

A yacht with a helicopter deck opens up a world of travel possibilities. Arrive on your yacht at sea, take a stunning helicopter tour of a nearby wildlife refuge or glacier, or skip the tender on your way to the airport – those are all possibilities aboard a yacht with a helipad.

Super Yachts with Helicopter Pads

Technically, superyachts are fully crewed boats that measure 24 meters or longer (that’s just about 75 feet). That definition doesn’t reflect the times. Superyachts have gotten larger and more opulent than ever, with designers pushing the bounds of what’s possible.

Naturally, yachts with helicopter decks tend to be larger – north of 200 feet. These larger-than-life yachts are some of the most exclusive charter superyachts with helipad access:

Yacht Solandge

The beautiful Solandge is one of the most unique yachts on the market today. Her interior, for example, the work of Rodriguez Interiors and Dolker & Voges, features countless design surprises. The main salon is a stunner. It’s decked out with amethyst walls, gold leaf ceilings, a Bechstein piano and Schonbeck chandeliers with hanging amethyst rose quartz crystals. Yet, the centerpiece is an art glass sculpture, “The Tree of Life,” that stretches 50 feet high and is bedazzled by 1,000+ points of light.

Outside, Solandge shows her sheer size. She boasts a sexy beach club, a gold and white bar, a spa pool and a dance floor, among other opulent luxuries. Of course, you’ll find the helipad outdoors, too, as well as a sprawling sun deck and lounge. The yacht is maintained by a crew of 29 and can accommodate 12 guests in eight large cabins.

Yacht Legend

Originally built by Icon in 1974, Legend underwent its most recent refit in 2016. The ship isn’t a traditional motor yacht. Rather, she’s a fully certified Class 1 ice-breaking ship, and more recently has been turned into a luxury explorer yacht.

Legend is definitely one-of-a-kind. Inside and out, she offers the best in luxury yachting. The ship accommodates up to 26 guests – in total luxury – in her 13 staterooms. There’s a master suite, two VIP suites, as well as 10 different staterooms.

The yacht is built for exploration. In addition to her commercial helipad, Legend features her very own submarine. Plus, adding to the undeniable allure is a gym, Balinese spa and sauna, a Jacuzzi, a movie theater, and a swimming pool. Legend is maintenance by a crew of 19, as well as a 10-member expedition crew, including doctors, ice pilots, expedition leaders and naturalists.

Yacht Naia

NAIA was built by Freire Shipyard in 2011, and she offers an abundance of space for relaxing and entertaining. Spread across four decks, the yacht has six guest suites and a master suite, the latter of which takes up the entire “penthouse” level and includes a private deck. A central spiral staircase connects all of the decks, and the master suite is accessible through an elevator that goes as low as the sundeck.

As for the common areas, NAIA has plenty of areas for guests to choose from, including a cinema room. The main saloon is both inviting and intimate, with ultra-comfortable plush couches and a chic contemporary décor. A dining table can seat up to eight people, and is surrounded by a smaller sitting area, a small bar and plenty of artwork. Outside, charter guests onboard will find casual seating and bar areas, al fresco dining, another bar, a Jacuzzi, and plenty of places to sunbathe.

Yacht Cloudbreak

Built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2016, Cloudbreak is a truly world-class expedition yacht. The exterior design of Cloudbreak is the work of Espen Oeino, and the Scandinavian-inspired interior design was completed by Paris-based Christian Liaigre. After undergoing four years of development, this custom-built mega yacht is finally on the market, and it offers a world of adventure.

In addition to her helipad, the yacht has a fully stocked garage of water toys, including scuba equipment, jet skis, and numerous kayaks, paddle boards and kite surfing rigs. Inside, though, the yacht is a show stopper. With accommodations for up to 12 guests, as well as amenities like a spa with sauna, swimming pool and beach club, Cloudbreak is designed for relaxing excursions.

Enigma XK

Enigma XK was first built by Richards Shipbuilders in 1987, and last refit in 2013. Previously named Norna, this yacht is the work of Vitruvius and Philippe Briand, who completed its interior and exterior design, respectively.

The sleek interior is marked by cream and white tones, light woods, lit flooring, and a glamorous aesthetic. There is a full-scale wellness and fitness center onsite, and this boat was named “Best Yacht Conversion” winner of The World Superyachts Award in 2014. Perfect for adventuring through ice-filled waters, Enigma XK offers plenty of toys for exploring, including a 9-meter Limo tender, an R.I.B. tender, a rescue tender, two Zodiac tenders, multiple wave runners, SCUBA diving and snorkeling equipment, a dive compressor, water skis, a wake board, tow toys, inflatable pontoons and more.

Yacht Suri

SuRi was built by Halter Marine/Yacht Escort Ships International in 1978, and later refit in 2016. An ideal yacht for travel with family and friends, SuRi is the brainchild of its owner. Its décor is both comfortable and contemporary, with expansive cabins and elegant living areas. Plus, the yacht boasts a fitness center, a massage room, and even a “Windows to the Sea” section of the yacht, where travelers can get a glimpse of all of the colorful fish swimming around them.

Outside, guests can dine al fresco on the sun deck, relax in the Jacuzzi, sunbathe, or enjoy a sunset cocktail in front of a backdrop of amazing views. In addition to the helipad, there are bikes, snorkel equipment, surfboards, kayaks, fishing gear, diving equipment and even a 35-foot Stan-Craft mahogany speedster. On SuRi, the choices are endless.

Yacht O'Ptasia with Helipad

Built in 2018 by Golden Yachts, O’Ptasia is a stunning superyacht that features a wide array of world-class amenities. The yacht features a high-end contemporary aesthetic inside, including sleek and spacious salons and expertly appointed guest staterooms. She accommodates up to 12 in 11 rooms, including a master suite, VIP stateroom, as well as a variety of double and twin cabins.

Her exterior is a masterpiece of nautical engineering. Featuring expansive decks, including a sizable beach club and breezy sun deck, the yacht is a floating five-star hotel. You’ll find all of the amenities onboard: A spa, an outdoor bar, sun deck Jacuzzi and much more.

Yacht Planet Nine with Helipad

The ice-classed explorer yacht Planet Nine was built in 2018 by Italian shipyard Admiral Yachts. Built for explorations in the far corners of the world, no expense was spared on her construction. Inside, the yacht is the epitome of opulence.

Designed by London-based Milnaric, Henry and Zervudachi (MHZ), the superyacht has a full range of luxury amenities: Modern staterooms, including a master suite that takes an entire deck, a panoramic observation deck, and an immaculate dining area.

Yet, the ship is certainly designed for exploration. Outside, the yacht’s most recognizable feature is the helipad, which features a garage just below. Additionally, you’ll find everything on board for a high-seas adventure, including two 32-foot tenders, 120-inch cinema, steam room, sauna and a spacious beach club.

Charter Yachts with Helicopters

Looking for something a bit more compact? It’s true that a 200+ foot yacht isn’t for everyone. Fortunately, if you’d like to charter a helicopter-equipped yacht, there are plenty of options in the 130- to 200-foot range. Here are a few of our favorites:

Yacht Skyfall with Helipad

With sleek exterior styling and a timeless interior, Skyfall offers the best in Caribbean yachting. The yacht was built in 2010, but underwent a complete refit in 2015. Today, she’s gorgeous inside and out.

Her interior features an “urban contemporary” aesthetic, with notes of Buddhist Zen, and you’ll notice when you step on board. Featuring an array of unique materials, including petrified tree trunks as well as a Tiger’s Eye bar in the sky lounge, the yacht is designed for entertaining (with space for up to 12 guests).

Outside, Skyfall offers plenty of deck space. Her sun deck features a splash pool, and there’s space for alfresco dining on the aft deck, a beautiful skylounge, and a panoramic balcony.

Yacht Tommy

Tommy is a luxury motor yacht built by Benetti in 1995. It underwent its last refit in 2014 and boasts an interior and exterior design by Terence Disdale and Stefano Natucci, respectively. This yacht is large enough to host a cocktail party for up to 100 guests.

The interior of Tommy is both elegant and classic, with cream and burnt orange tones, and light wood cabinets and paneling throughout. The main salon is large and comfortable and comes with plush sofas and impeccable décor. There is a formal dining area, as well as a club-style sky lounge with a games table and a flat screen TV.

Outside, guests will find spots for alfresco dining, a sun deck, multiple bar areas, a central spa pool, multiple sunbeds, and of course, the helipad. From the swim platform, guests have access to countless water toys, including: a 5.8-meter Novurania Tender, a 5.8-meter Novurania Tender, two two-person Kawasaki Wave runners, water skis, a wakeboard, tows and plenty of snorkeling gear. Tommy can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Yacht True North with Helipad

True North offers the ultimate oasis of luxury for your Australia or Southeast Asian expedition. The yacht, which was built in 2005, is fully equipped for explorations. She features six tenders, as well as her own Eurocopter EC 130 helicopter.

On-board, the experience is incredible. True North features a spacious layout, with accommodations for up to 36 guests. The yacht includes 18 rooms, including 10 double cabins and 8 twins, and she’s designed for fun exploring the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll find a variety of water toys and equipment including: Dive compression, dive equipment, a jet ski, and plenty of fishing gear.

Yacht Tango with Helipad

Built in 2006, Tango is a luxury superyacht that charters primarily in Australia. With accommodations for up to 8 guests, Tango offers complete comfort on the open seas. The yacht features a deck Jacuzzi, as well as beautiful sun deck.

Looking to enjoy the waters? Tango offers a full array of water toys including a jet ski, paddleboard, kayaks, fishing equipment and snorkel gear. She’s also equipped with two tenders, and of course, the helipad.

Smallest Yacht with Helicopter Pad

An on-board helipad traditionally means a spacious yacht. Yet, there are a number of boats that accommodation copters, but have a smaller footprint. If you’re headed out with a small group, but want the luxury of a helipad, these yachts are perfect:

Flying Fish Yacht with Helipad

They say big things come in small packages, and that’s certainly true of Flying Fish. This yacht – built in 1991 and refit in 2010 – offers the perfect platform for small-ground adventures. She sleeps up to 8 in four rooms, including a stunning master suite. And her interior features a chic, upscale décor and plenty of deck space for entertaining.

Plus, the yacht’s wide array of toys including scuba equipment, snorkeling gear, fishing equipment and sea kayaks. She’s equipped with a fully certified helipad – perfect for a low-key Barrier Reef excursion.

Superyacht Helipads Explained

Superyacht Helipads Explained

In recent years, the inclusion of helipads on superyachts has become a symbol of luxury and sophistication, reflecting the evolving demands of high-net-worth individuals seeking the ultimate travel experience. This trend underscores the increasing popularity of superyachts with helipads as an integral feature in the world of luxury travel. The seamless integration of air and sea travel, coupled with the prestige and exclusivity associated with helipads, has established these yachts as opulent and convenient in the world of luxury travel. As technology and design continue to advance, helipads are likely to remain a coveted feature, catering to those who seek luxury and sophistication on the high seas.

Helipads on superyachts enable access to remote and secluded destinations that may be inaccessible by traditional means. This capability expands the horizons of luxury travel, offering owners and guests the opportunity to explore pristine locations far from the typical tourist routes, enhancing the sense of exclusivity and adventure.

For busy individuals with demanding schedules, time is a precious commodity. Helipads on superyachts facilitate swift and efficient travel, minimizing the time spent on transportation logistics. This time-saving aspect is particularly appealing to business moguls, celebrities, and high-profile individuals who value the ability to maximize their time in luxurious surroundings.

The inclusion of a helipad on a superyacht contributes to an enhanced guest experience. Whether it’s welcoming VIPs, business associates, or friends, the convenience of arriving directly on the yacht creates a lasting impression. It adds an element of grandeur to events hosted on the superyacht, making every moment memorable.

The Basics of Superyacht Helipads

A helipad on a superyacht is a specially designed area or platform that serves as a landing and takeoff point for helicopters. The purpose of incorporating a helipad into a superyacht is to provide a means of convenient and direct air access for the yacht’s owner, guests, or VIPs. This feature adds a significant level of flexibility and luxury to the yacht, allowing for seamless transitions between air and sea travel.

Helipads enable direct access to the superyacht, eliminating the need for guests to travel to and from airports or other landing facilities. This convenience is especially valuable for those with busy schedules who seek efficient and seamless travel experiences.

Helipads extend the range of destinations that a superyacht can reach, including remote or secluded areas that are inaccessible by traditional means. This feature enhances the yacht’s versatility, providing the opportunity for unique and exclusive travel experiences.

The inclusion of a helipad adds a prestigious and luxurious element to a superyacht, appealing to high-net-worth individuals who value exclusivity and opulence. It symbolizes the yacht owner’s commitment to providing an unparalleled level of comfort and convenience for themselves and their guests.

Different types of helipads: permanent vs. retractable

Some superyachts have permanent helipads that are integrated into the yacht’s structure and design. These helipads are typically situated on the upper deck and are a visible and constant feature of the yacht. They are constructed using materials which can withstand the weight and rotor wash of helicopters. They often feature non-slip surfaces and include lighting for nighttime operations.

Retractable helipads are designed to be concealed when not in use, preserving the aesthetics of the yacht. These helipads often use hydraulic systems to lower and raise the landing platform into a dedicated storage space beneath the deck. Retractable helipads offer greater versatility in terms of space utilization. When the helipad is retracted, the area can be used for other purposes, such as a sun deck or entertainment space.

Both permanent and retractable helipads contribute to the overall functionality and appeal of superyachts, providing owners and guests with an extraordinary level of convenience and luxury in their travel experiences.

Design and Construction Considerations

The design and construction of helipads on superyachts involve meticulous considerations to ensure safety, functionality, and seamless integration with the vessel’s overall aesthetics. Structural engineers collaborate closely with naval architects to address the unique challenges presented by the maritime environment. For permanent helipads, the design incorporates load-bearing elements capable of supporting the weight of helicopters, considering factors like rotor dynamics and potential vibrations. Non-slip materials, often resistant to saltwater corrosion, are chosen to enhance safety during landing and takeoff. Lighting systems are integrated for nighttime operations. In the case of retractable helipads, hydraulic systems are intricately engineered to facilitate smooth and controlled movements, allowing the platform to seamlessly transition between its stored position and the operational state. Attention is given to the yacht’s weight distribution, ensuring stability during helicopter operations. Overall, the design and construction of these helipads epitomize the marriage of engineering precision with aesthetic harmony, embodying pure luxury and functionality of superyacht amenities.

Compliance with aviation and maritime regulations is paramount when designing and constructing helipads on superyachts, as these structures involve the integration of both air and sea travel elements. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and relevant national aviation authorities set stringent standards for helipad design and operation to ensure safety and adherence to international aviation regulations.

Helipad compliance involves meeting specific criteria related to dimensions, markings, lighting, and safety features to ensure the safe landing and takeoff of helicopters. They must also comply with maritime regulations dictated by classification societies and flag state authorities. These regulations address the structural integrity of the yacht, taking into account the additional load and stresses imposed by helicopter operations.

Compliance extends to the implementation of emergency response protocols, including firefighting equipment, heli-deck crash rescue facilities, and crew training. These measures are in place to address potential emergencies and ensure the safety of passengers, crew, and the vessel itself.

Size and Compatibility

The operation of helipads on superyachts is subject to a comprehensive framework of maritime and aviation regulations to ensure safety and compliance. International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards dictate the design, construction, and operational criteria for helipads, emphasizing dimensions, markings, and safety features. National aviation authorities enforce these standards, with flag states and classification societies overseeing maritime aspects. Licensing and permits are crucial for operating a helipad at sea, involving approvals from both aviation and maritime authorities. Yacht owners must obtain helipad certification, demonstrating adherence to aviation standards, and ensure compliance with the yacht’s flag state regulations. Additionally, local permits may be required for each port of call, reflecting the yacht’s commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and adherence to international and regional regulations governing the dynamic intersection of air and sea travel.

Safety Measures and Protocols

Safety measures for helipad operations on superyachts are paramount to mitigate risks associated with landing and take-off. Rigorous training for both crew and pilots is essential, covering proper communication protocols, emergency procedures, and the use of safety equipment. Emergency response plans include firefighting capabilities, crash rescue facilities, and medical assistance to address unforeseen incidents. Helipads are equipped with lighting systems for nighttime operations, and non-slip materials ensure secure footing during adverse weather conditions. Crew members are trained to handle various helicopter types, and regular drills prepare them for swift and coordinated responses to emergencies. Additionally, pilots undergo specific training to adapt to the unique challenges posed by maritime environments. These comprehensive safety measures underscore the commitment of superyacht owners and operators to prioritize the well-being of passengers, crew, and the integrity of the vessel during helicopter operations.

Operational Considerations

Operating a helipad at sea presents unique challenges which require careful consideration by superyacht owners and operators. The constantly changing maritime environment, including sea conditions and weather fluctuations, can impact helicopter operations. Maintenance and upkeep of the helipad demand regular inspections to ensure structural integrity, non-slip surfaces, and compliance with aviation regulations. Coordination with maritime and air traffic control is essential to facilitate seamless helicopter movements, especially in busy or restricted areas. Effective communication and collaboration with these authorities are crucial to obtain clearances, navigate airspace regulations, and enhance overall safety. Maintenance personnel must be well-trained to address any wear and tear, corrosion, or weather-related damage promptly. These challenges underscore the need for a proactive approach, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance, effective communication, and a thorough understanding of the dynamic conditions inherent in operating a helipad at sea.

The Luxury and Convenience Factor

Superyachts with helipads represent luxurious travel, seamlessly integrating air and sea transportation for unparalleled convenience and exclusivity. The design and construction of these helipads involve meticulous considerations for safety, compliance with aviation and maritime regulations, and adherence to international standards. Standard helipads on superyachts, ranging from 10 to 18 meters in diameter, accommodate various luxury helicopters, with the size carefully determined based on the yacht’s design and available space. Compliance with licensing, permits, and regulations is essential for operating a helipad at sea, with a focus on safety measures, emergency procedures, and coordination with maritime and air traffic control. The challenges of operating a helipad at sea include addressing the dynamic maritime environment, ensuring maintenance and upkeep, and effective communication with regulatory authorities. Notable examples of superyachts with helipads, like the “Octopus,” highlight the prestige and desirability associated with these luxurious additions, emphasizing their significant impact on the overall value and allure of superyachts in the competitive luxury yacht market.

Increased possibilities for helicopter storage on board superyachts

Created by tiger tugs specifically for the superyacht market, the typhoon tug has omni-directional capabilities….

Image for article Increased possibilities for helicopter storage on board superyachts

Providing owners and guests with quick and easy access on and off the vessel, a helicopter is a huge asset on board any superyacht. However, a helicopter can also take up a large amount of valuable space on board, so how the helicopter is stored and handled is paramount to the superyacht ownership experience. The Typhoon tug was initially created out of necessity, when a superyacht client approached Tiger Tugs as a last resort after being unable to find a suitable solution on the market that could effectively stow and move a helicopter on board.

“The client had built a superyacht with a hangar on board, and the only way to get the helicopter into the hangar was to pick it up, rotate it 90 degrees and drive it in sideways,” explains Steve Hill, president and CEO of Tiger Tugs. “In addition, there was only two inches of clearance at each end of the hangar door, so the vehicle had to be very precise and reliable in its movement. We had the capability to design and build a tug that could meet all of these requirements, and that’s how the Typhoon was born.”

The Typhoon is the first helicopter tug of its kind to be designed specifically for the superyacht market. The tug is unique because of its omni-directional capability: it is able to move sideways at any angle, in any direction of the compass and pivot 360-degrees about its centre. It also comes with full wireless remote-control capability, enabling safe and single-handed operation.

“With its ability to move in any direction, the Typhoon can utilise a space in which other vehicles aren’t able to operate.”

Making simple work of moving helicopters within tight spaces, the Typhoon has opened up a new realm of possibilities for the housing and movement helicopters on board superyachts. “Real estate on superyachts is very limited and it is important to use every bit of it wisely,” adds Hill. “With its ability to move in any direction, the Typhoon can utilise a space in which other vehicles aren’t able to operate. It can also be used to move tenders or submarines around on board.”

Many superyachts are now incorporating elevators to store helicopters below deck after landing. Once below deck, these helicopters need to be moved sideways off the elevator platform and the Typhoon is the ideal solution to do so.

Being able to move the helicopter off the landing pad and into a storage compartment on board a superyacht is also very important from a maintenance perspective. “Helicopters are an expensive investment and protecting their sensitive electronics and flight systems from the corrosive marine air is extremely important,” Hill concludes. “A lot of these storage areas for helicopters take unusual manoeuvring in order to get the helicopter inside – we offer the safest, and sometimes only, solution to accomplish that goal.”

The $4.8 Billion Vessel: Here's What Makes History Supreme The Most Expensive Yacht In The World

The richest yacht companies, ranked by valuation, house of the dragon cast net worth: who rules the wealthy realm of westeros, key takeaways.

  • Superyachts with onboard helipads and helicopter storage allow billionaires to seamlessly transition from sea to sky, combining luxury and utility.
  • Helipads on superyachts are constructed using strong materials to withstand the weight and impact of helicopters, with an onboard hangar to store the aircraft out of sight and safe from harsh weather conditions.
  • Landing a helicopter on a yacht requires careful consideration of weather conditions and safety measures, with maintenance and servicing essential to ensure the safety of both the helicopter and the yacht.

In the ever fabulous world of the super rich, owning a superyacht is akin to having a customized island on the open seas. These billionaire playgrounds are testaments of grandeur, stirring envy even among owners of the most stately mansions.

Over the years, yachts have gone from extra large party boats to symbols of unparalleled maritime elegance. These superyachts flaunt cutting edge designs, facilities, and other designs that make you wonder why the billionaire owners ever bother returning to land when they have such a floating palace at their disposal.

Now imagine a billionaire off the coast of Sardinia; the sun is setting on the island, and he decides to take an aerial tour of the Italian city with a helicopter – this is where luxury meets utility. This seamless transition from sea to sky is possible thanks to the ingenious design of the onboard helipads, and storage beneath the deck for the choppers ... having a helicopter is a necessity in difficult environments, and serve a key element of safety.

Storing a helicopter on a $49 million superyacht is no small feat. Engineers typically equip the sea vessel with an integrated helicopter landing platform, commonly referred to as a helipad or heli deck. Based on the yacht's size, the helipad can either be located at the stern, also known as the aft, or on the bow to ensure easy access for take-offs and landings.

Constructed using strong materials such as reinforced steel and carbon fiber, the helipad is designed to withstand the weight and impact of a helicopter without compromising its structural integrity. Typically, an onboard hanger located below the helipad is incorporated into the yacht's structural design.

The yacht History Supreme costs almost $5 billion for goof reason.

This hangar houses the helicopter when it is not in use. Precision hydraulic systems or electric pulley systems lower the aircraft safely into the hull, storing it entirely out of sight and safe from harsh weather conditions.

Landing And Storage

Landing a helicopter on a yacht is not the same as landing it on stable ground; the $49 million vessel experiences dynamic motion due to wave action, which could potentially cause a significant hazard to helicopter and yacht operations.

Before landing, the yacht must stay stationary, with its nose in the wind to reduce relative wind speeds, and the helipads will be limited to receiving helicopters according to The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) conditions. The helipad must be clear of any obstacles, and the crew must ensure that any loose items or debris that may pose a risk during landing be removed from the deck area.

Next, the crew will check the weather conditions to ensure clear visibility. Wind speed and direction are important in determining whether it is safe land the aircraft. Once the helicopter's skids touch down on the helipad, the crew will fold the helicopter's blades backwards, making it more compact and easier to store in the yacht's hangar.

Depending on the size of the aircraft, a tow vehicle is typically used to move the helicopter into the hangar below the deck. The tow vehicle is positioned in front of the chopper, and its bars are attached to the chopper's landing gear.

It is then slowly lowered into the hangar, where it is safely secured and positioned using straps and other restraints to avoid damage from rough seas. It is an intricate process aimed at prioritizing safety while seamlessly integrating two powerful modes of transportation.

Yacht Companies often make big bucks, owing to their high-profile clientele.

Maintenance And Safety Considerations

To ensure that the aircraft stays safe in the hangar, measures such as regular checks and servicing are taken to avoid damage while in storage.

Factors such as the weight of the helicopter on the sea vessel, as well as the availability of maintenance tools, refueling arrangements and firefighting equipment, are considered vital for the safety of both the chopper and the yacht. A superyacht can house practically any helicopter model, provided that the size of the vessel allows a helipad.

One of the largest Superyachts ever made, the 142-metre Lurssen motor yacht NORD (owned by Russia's richest man, Alexey Mordashov) boasts two retractable hangars, one in its bridge deck and the other in its bow.

Helicopters are sensitive machines with a lot of moving parts to keep them functional. The yacht's ventilation systems are installed to remove any buildup of exhaust gases when the helicopter is in storage.

Fire and smoke detectors are also installed in the hangar for an added layer of precaution, while the aircraft is usually refueled while the yacht is moored safely at the port. This ensures that any potential fire risks are handled on steady footing.

Stowing a helicopter on a yacht requires the strategic designs that only astronomical amounts of money can buy. The combination of aviation and marine technology to birth the ability to store a helicopter on a $49 million superyacht is the pinnacle of luxury and convenience.

07 Nov The Expedition Yacht With Its Own Helicopter Hangar

For those looking to quit their life and become an international explorer might want to take a peek at the Damen SeaXplorer which is built to lead expeditions to almost anywhere. To me, this is one of the most interesting superyachts of recent because of what it is meant to accomplish and the technology built in. The Damen SeaXplorer can be entirely self-reliant for an entire thirty days, so explore to the furthest reaches of the globe.

While this isn’t the worlds first expedition class superyacht, it has brought forth a design and overall package that I don’t think can be beat at the moment. While we sadly don’t have interior pictures yet superyacht photographer Tom van Oossanen was there to capture these beauties which really showcase what an impressive build this vessel is.

yacht with helicopter storage

This is the first of many from Damens SeaXplorer lineup that’s in the works and the launch of the 203 foot boat is a great start. This beauty has it all including a helipad, and even heli-storage so you can park it safely during rough weather. I will update this post as soon as I see the interior pictures and hopefully a helicopter parked in there.

Shadow boat: 7 superyacht support vessels as cool as their motherships

Whether they are used as a floating helipad, tender garage or accommodation for specialist staff, superyacht support vessels are an increasingly popular way of enriching the yachting experience. BOAT rounds up the superyacht support vessels as impressive as their motherships...

Koru and Abeona

The 75-metre Abeona marks the largest support vessel ever built by Damen Yachting . Fitting, as the custom project accompanies Oceanco 's flagship (and world's largest sailing yacht), the 125.8-metre Koru . Abeona was launched in October 2023 at Vlissingen, the Netherlands, sporting a grey hull and orange bootstripe designed entirely in-house. Key numbers include a 12.6-metre beam and volume of 1,900GT. She has the capacity to accommodate 45 people and features a helicopter hangar, a vast array of marine gear and additional tenders and toys.

More about this yacht

Gene machine and gene chaser.

Originally launched by Damen Yachting as Blue Ocean , this 55-metre support vessel has been transformed into Gene Chaser to accompany the Amels 180 superyacht Gene Machine . The yacht is being used as a working research laboratory to support the scientific research of owner Dr Jonathan Rothberg . The main saloon has been converted into a working wet and dry laboratory, while other interior areas are used for conferences and other educational purposes. Gene Chaser 's sleeping quarters can accommodate a total of eight visiting researchers or experts, while the crew quarters allow for a crew of seven and four full-time scientists.

Lonian and Hodor

Dubbed "the world's largest floating toy box" , the 66-metre Hodor is the first hull in Incat Crowther 's ShadowCat range and boasts enough deck space to house every toy imaginable. Among Hodor ’s cargo is a 7.3-metre Novurania catamaran RIB, a nine-metre Metal Shark landing craft and an insane 388 Skater race boat, capable of a genuine 240km/h. Toys and tenders are launched from two knuckle boom cranes, while a submarine garage offers a launch and recovery system for a submarine. Her mothership is the ultra-private 87-metre Lonian , delivered by Feadship in 2018.

Gigi and Axis

The 55.3-metre Axis belongs to serial superyacht owner Carl Allen, who first saw her at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2016. It was to be the perfect vessel to accompany his 49.9-metre Westport mothership Gigi around the world. Axis carries a Triton sub, an Icon A5 aeroplane, several tenders, Jet Skis and a complete dive shop. She also holds 60,000 gallons of fuel and her watermaker produces 20,000 gallons of fresh water daily. A Viking 52 Frigate completes the Allen Exploration fleet.

White Rabbit and Charley

Charley was launched in 2017 by Echo Yachts to serve as the shadow boat for the Australian shipyard's 84-metre trimaran White Rabbit . Measuring 51 metres in length, this catamaran support vessel has ample space to entertain guests with her sheltered observation deck and piano lounge. However, it is her tender storage capacity that is the most notable feature, as Charley can carry a fleet of up to ten watercraft, including five tenders, four Jet Skis and a hovercraft. Other key features include a dive store, decompression chamber and sonar system for searching out the best wreck dives.

Moonrise and Nebula

Featuring architecture by Incat Crowther , the 68.2-metre support yacht Nebula joined her ShadowCat siblings Hodor and Wayfinder on the water in 2022. Her primary mission is to support her 99.9-metre mothership Moonrise in helicopter operations, and she fits the bill with a wide enough beam to host a full-size hangar. It is the largest hangar found on any private vessel and can accommodate a twin-engine helicopter without it having to fold its rotor blades.
