Large superyachts visiting London, England on the river Thames are an exciting spectacle, but also a fantastic base to access events and the central parts of the city, making London a very interesting yacht charter prospect. There are also luxury yacht marinas and berths available with more currently being developed.
On such marina is the historic St Katharine Docks in central London which has berthage for 200 luxury yachts and historic barges. A haven of tranquillity and nestled in the heart of the City of London, St Katharine’s is directly adjacent to the iconic Tower Bridge and next to the Tower of London. The marina is home to visiting and local superyachts and also provides space for private and corporate events amongst the associated commercial buildings.
St Katharine Docks has a thousand years of dramatic history to its name, making it one of the most interesting marina histories in the world. King Edgar originally gifted 13 acres of land to 13 knights in 1125for trade. St Katharine’s docks have been used ever since throughout the ages for one purpose or another and then in 1825 construction began on the docks, laying down the framework for what you see today.
When visiting the UK with London on the itinerary, yachts also dock in the city of Southampton in south-west England. Many vessels drop anchor at Ocean Village Marina or Hamble Point Marina. Expect a coach or train journey time of around 1 hour 20 minutes from Southampton into South London.
London, the UK’s exciting capital city attracts visitors from around the world. Go shopping in Oxford Street, Regent Street as well as famous department stores like Harrods, Harvey Nichols or Selfridges. How about a night out at the theatre? Watch a play, musical, drama or ballet at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, the London Palladium or the Old Vic. There are many places to visit in London. It’s such a diverse city with some of the world’s best sights, attractions and activities.
See the city from above on the London Eye, meet a celeb at Madame Tussaud’s or examine the treasures at the British Museum. Sightseeing couldn’t be better. Check out the underwater creatures at Sea Life London or marvel at the strange objects in the Science Museum. There really is something for everyone in London and plenty to do to make up a luxury yacht charter itinerary.
Buy a day ticket for a London, red double-decker bus on-off tour. What a great vantage point to catch fantastic views of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral and of course, Buckingham Palace. You’ll get a birds-eye view of London Bridge, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey and the Changing of the Guard. Spend an afternoon at London Zoo, home to more than 16,000 animals like tigers, hippos, and giraffes.
A little outside London is Kensington Palace, an intriguing Royal Palace that also houses an exhibition of Princess Diana’s dresses. Find out where Queen Victoria lived as a child and see the wonderful collection of paintings from the Royal Collection. To keep you in holiday mode, take a river cruise down the River Thames. Relax and enjoy the magnificent views as you sail past Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Cleopatra’s Needle, The Shard and the London Eye Pier. After so much excitement, it’s back to your superyacht in Southampton for the next part of your voyage.

I wanted to organise something for my husband's 50th later in August but then we decided to go sooner, impromptu, as the weather in London is simply calling for a boat trip! Crew and Captain were very friendly and professional, yet at a distance as one expects from a 5-star service on a yacht. As an extra we had an amazing meal prepared from scratch on board by one of Gaucho restaurants top Chefs - very nice day which turned into a magical evening!
This is a terrific charter. A perfect boat for sightseeing (I'd say 5 is about the max unless you have kids) and a well trained, very professional crew to ensure you have an amazing time on the water. Highly recommend!
Great thing to do in London!! Especially in a pandemic or if you want privacy and space from people but want to see things...
Booked and paid last minute! What an unexpected beautiful experience - thank you Captain!

London is the capital city of the UK, a large part of its success as a city is thanks to the River Thames; a port and centre for trade and commerce. London is also one of the most important financial centres in the world and has the second-best global air connections in the world after Dubai. The very first settlers and invaders in London built castles and forts along the Thames to protect their possessions along the river. The banks of the Thames became known as the “string of Pearls” where the most gorgeous buildings were constructed, many of which tourists still visit today. Key players in English history such as King William went on to control the Thames and William the Conqueror constructed the Tower of London, which became the gateway to the capital. From the Middle Ages, all the way to the Tudors and the Stuarts, Kings and Queens built riverside palaces you can still visit till the present day, such as Richmond Palace and Hampton Court. Entering a period of war and trade in the 16th and 17th centuries, the great City of London kept local shipbuilders busy, where sea-going vessels flourished and gave way to half of the Nation’s trade. Arriving in the 21st century, the River Thames not only has become one of the cleanest rivers in the world (also home to over 115 different species of fish) but has huge blocks of luxury apartments and has become a key area for business meetings, wedding and weekend breaks with a plethora of docks for sailing and canoeing. With a private river cruise or self-driving your way through the heart of London, you will have a memorable and delightful experience.
A luxury yacht charter in the Thames River is one of the most mind-blowing experiences any tourist can ever come across. The city provides a deep insight into historical landscapes, museums, art galleries, and a transition to lush green and culturally rich countrysides. London has a lot to offer to everyone with different tastes and moods. With an elegant yet speedy motor yacht, you can enjoy mesmerizing sights such as the London Eye Pier, Cleopatra’s Needle, The Shard, and even sail past Shakespeare’s Global Theatre.
Cruising the Thames with a meal on board is the best thing to experience when on vacation with your friends, family, and loved ones. Many cruise ships and catamarans offer luxury, mouthwatering menus to enjoy on the boats while taking in delightful sceneries. A dinner cruise will keep you in holiday mode and allow you to explore the diverse city in style. Moreover, cruise ships or skippered vessels offer informative tours about the area, a great option for the first-timers.
London city cruises allow hop-on and hop-off options between three important piers (docks): Westminster, tower, and London Eye. You can rent a motorboat or speedboat for 24 hours with the option to hop off on any of the docks and hop on again whenever you want.
If you are an art lover, you must know the best art galleries in London are the Tate Britain and the Tate Modern. If these are on your travel wish list, then a special Tate to Tate cruise can be an unforgettable experience towards your favorite art destination. You can travel between them and towards them with a narrowboat or any yacht you desire and create unforgettable memories.
If you decide to cruise the River Thames for a whole week, you can sail through central London and navigate the upper and lower channels. You will notice that the unique river runs over 90 miles from the sea to Teddington. You will also pass by the Oxford downstream and the great castles and Royal Palaces of Windsor in Maidenhead. Making your way to the Thames Barrier, you can propel your way through the fitting gateway that approaches the sea. Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Somerset House, Cutty Shark, and The Island Gardens are other interesting sights to behold. Passenger boats and yachts meander their way through the beautiful countryside, including Abingdon, Reading, Hampton Court, and Kingston. Even after all these compelling historical sites, you will spot interesting wildlife such as kingfishers, otters, and ducks from Lechlade to all sorts of marine mammals and bottlenose dolphins down at Teddington Weir. There is something for everyone in London who decides to spend their yacht charter in the Thames.

Boat hire in London
Float your way across these boating lakes with our guide to London boat hire
London can get pretty damn sweaty during the hotter months . And while day trips and seaside jaunts are great for some light relief from the heat, sometimes city responsibilities mean escaping Zone 6 just isn’t possible. If you need to swap your stuffy flat for cooler climes, but only have a few hours to spare, a boat trip might be just what you need.
Luckily London is full of rivers, lakes, ponds and canals to pedal across, row down or canoe around, and we’re blessed with loads of great places to hire boats, too. Here’s our guide to the best boating spots in the city to help you cool down. Just try not to fall in!

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
Hire boats and pedalos in London
1. boating on the serpentine.
- Sightseeing
Hyde Park is home to London's oldest boating lake, and visitors can take out a pedalo or rowing boat to admire the many interesting waterfowl that call it home (as well as the brave swimmers in the unheated Serpentine Lido). The boats get very popular in good weather, especially at weekends, but the lake's spacious so once you're out there you should find plenty of room to sail.
Price : £12 per adult per hour (£10 for half an hour). Open daily 10am-6pm April-May; 10am-7pm June-August; 10am-8pm June-August; 10am-7pm; 10am-dusk October-March.
2. Regent’s Park Boating Lake
- Ships and boats
- Regent’s Park
You can hire a rowing boat or pedalo on the water in Regent's Park, which is surrounded by beautiful greenery. Kids can pedal around their own mini-lake, while grown-ups might attempt a spot of romancing – this is the lake in which Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson frolicked in classic British romance ‘Brief Encounter’.
Price : £10.50 per adult per hour. Open daily from 10am weekdays and 11am on weekends, closing at 6pm April-May; 7pm June-September; dusk in October.
3. Lee Valley Boat Centre
- Sport and fitness
- Hertfordshire
This is your destination if you want a comprehensive choice of vessels to hire. There are pedalos, electric boats (with steering wheel) and traditional rowing boats available to hire on an hourly and half-hourly basis.
Price :From £14 per boat per hour.
Open daily 10am-6pm, opening times can vary. Opening dates this year run from April 8-October 22.
4. Crystal Palace Park Boating Lake
- Parks and gardens
- Crystal Palace
Not much is going to make you pedal faster than realising you're floating past a load of dinosaurs. Crystal Palace Park's ancient inhabitants have been on the banks of its lake since the 1850s, and visitors can hire a pedalo to pootle past them, pretending they're in a slo-mo, waterborne scene from 'Jurassic Park'.
Price :£5 per pedalo, per adult. Cash only. Open 10.30am-5pm weekends, bank holidays and school holidays from Easter until October.
5. Victoria Park Boating Lake
- Victoria Park
East London's vast and lovely Victoria Park boasts a huge lake with three islands (one of which can be accessed by footbridge) to row or pedal past. There's also a beautiful fountain, which will need avoiding if you're not in the mood to get drenched. The nearby Pavilion Café sells refreshments to perk you up afterwards.
Price :£10 per boat per half hour. Open daily. 12pm-5pm Mon-Fri, 12-6 Sun. Opens each year roughly from Easter-October 31.
6. Moo Canoes
Kayak down the Thames in a bovine boat as part of this alternative sightseeing tour. A two-man vessel decorated with a black and white cow print will be your mode of transport. There are several alternatives but 'Greenwich Meal Time' runs from Limehouse Basin to the Royal Naval College at Greenwich.
There you'll disembark and dine in a riverside restaurant, before sailing back via the Millennium Dome. The trip is suitable for beginners and no kayaking experience is necessary.
Price : From £26 per tandem kayak for the first hour. Book in advance. Open Sat and Sun 10am-5pm April-October.
7. Greenwich Park Boating Lake
There's nowhere to hide on Greenwich Park's little lake, so if you'd rather your mates didn't see you steering a pedalo (or rowing boat) like it's a bumper car you might like to sail elsewhere. The plus side to this is that any landlubbers can wave and take photos from the banks while you're on board.
Price : £4 per adult per half hour. Open 10am-5pm weekends, from April-October.
8. Dulwich Park Boating Lake
Take a serene trip across Dulwich Park's lake in one of its green pedalos or rowing boats and enjoy views of the nearby pavilion café while you float.
Price : £4 per adult per half hour. Cash only. Open 10am-5pm on weekends, bank holidays and school holidays from April-October.
9. Hollow Ponds
- Things to do
- Snaresbrook
A true escape from tarmac and concrete, Epping Forest's Hollow Ponds are a beautiful stretch of water offering you the space to row your own adventure. Apart from the boathouse, Lakeside Diner and other facilities there's hardly a building to be seen, and friendly staff are on hand to instruct beginners.
Price : £15 per boat per hour (£10 for a half hour). Open daily 10am-8pm
10. Alexandra Palace Boating Lake
- Cultural centres
- Alexandra Palace
You'll have to get up one heck of a hill to reach Ally Pally, but your efforts will be rewarded with a choice of rides that would get even the most po-faced pedalo-er squealing with delight. Choose to float across the lake in a swan, a dragon or a VW Beetle, or go trad with a plain yellow design.
Those looking to put some extra effort into their waterborne experience can take out a rowing boat instead. The Lakeside Café offers indoor and outdoor seating, free wifi and baby changing facilities.
Price : From £6.95 per adult per half hour with a minimum fee of £8.95. Open 10am-6pm Apr-Sept, 10am-4pm Oct-March, weather permitting.
11. Battersea Park Boating Lake
- Zoos and aquariums
The pretty lake in Battersea Park sees its hired rowing boats and pedalos going round in circles thanks to a central island. Its tall greenery also serves to allow beginners to find a more secluded spot to practice in before they are confident enough to steam back into port.
Price : £6 per adult per 30 minutes. Open school holidays, public holidays and all weekends between Easter and the end of September.
12. Finsbury Park Boats
- Finsbury Park
Row your boat around the island in Finsbury Park's little lake. You may find yourself ducking and diving to avoid the bird life, however, especially if you've bought a bag of swan and duck feed with you.
Price : £8 per boat per 30 minutes. All those who don their best pirate oufits on a Saturday (noon-3pm) will get a boat for £5. Open noon-6pm daily from Easter to early October, then weekends in Autumn.

Tips for Decorating a Hired Boat for Special Occasions
Decorating a hired boat for special occasions can transform it into a festive and memorable venue for events such as birthdays, anniversaries, or corporate gatherings. Whether you have hired a small yacht, a compact sailboat, or a cosy fishing boat, there are plenty of creative ways to spruce it up for any celebration. Here's a guide with tips and ideas to help you decorate your vessel, ensuring it's not just any ordinary small craft but a splendidly adorned floating celebration spot.
- Select a Theme: Choose a theme that resonates with the occasion. You can opt for a playful, colourful theme for a birthday. Anniversaries may call for more romantic decor. Aim for a professional yet inviting atmosphere for corporate events on a mini-cruiser or a modest-sized charter.
- Lighting to Set the Mood: Illuminate your boat with string lights, lanterns, or LED strips. If you're on a small runabout or pontoon, carefully arrange lights to highlight spaces without overcrowding. Solar-powered lights are great for energy efficiency and can be a fantastic choice for small watercraft.
- Colour Scheme: Choose a colour palette that compliments the boat's interior. For a cabin cruiser or a personal-sized inflatable dinghy, avoid overwhelming the space with too many colours. Use cushions, tablecloths, and banners that align with your chosen palette.
- Floral Arrangements and Greenery: Flowers and plants can add a fresh, natural touch. Opt for small, hidden arrangements on a small RIB or a compact motorboat. Hang garlands or place potted plants strategically around the deck and cabin.
- Seating Arrangements: Ensure there's enough seating for your guests. Use throw pillows and cushions on an open boat or a day cruiser for extra comfort and aesthetic appeal. Consider rearranging seating to facilitate conversation and enjoyment of the scenery.
- Dining Setup: If hosting a meal on your hired pleasure craft or small fishing boat, set up a dining area that's both practical and stylish. Utilise foldable tables and chairs to maximise space. Choose unbreakable dinnerware for safety and convenience.
- Music and Entertainment: A good sound system can enhance the ambience. Portable Bluetooth speakers are a great choice for a small rowboat or a tender boat. Ensure the volume is at a level that's enjoyable but not disruptive to others.
- Decorate Responsibly: Safety is paramount. Ensure decorations don't obstruct navigation or safety equipment on your raft or small keelboat. Keep pathways clear and avoid flammable materials.
- Adding Unique Elements: Personalise your space with items that reflect the occasion or your personality. You can use display photos, banners, or custom signage on a small catamaran or a dinghy boat to add a unique touch.
- Cleanup Plan: Plan for an easy cleanup. Use decorations that are reusable or easy to dispose of responsibly, especially important in the confined spaces of a small sailing boat or inflatable craft.
By integrating these tips and ideas, you can turn your small boat hire into an enchanting venue for any special occasion. Remember, the key is to balance aesthetics with practicality and safety, ensuring an unforgettable and enjoyable experience for everyone on board.
FAQs about Small Boats in London
What is the capacity of small boats for hire in london.
Boats for small events in London offer spaces for as little as 6-10 people , usually on smaller yachts and in semi-private areas on a larger vessel. You'll find many boats for between 20-50 guests , and some larger options in case your definition of small differs!
First of all, make sure you have enough space for everyone who will attend your event - London's boats for hire usually provide you with information on capacity depending on the layout you pick. If you're unsure of the guest count, it's better to go for something slightly larger than you need. Too much space will just mean you have a few empty spots, but booking a boat smaller than necessary will create serious issues.

How can I book a cheap small boat in London?
Many people are surprised by the fact that you can hire an affordable boat in London, but it's actually quite simple! Most of these venues are owned by individuals and not large companies, so they're often more flexible with their pricing and willing to work with you on making an event that will fit within your budget. If you're looking for a great place to host a small gathering on a boat in London, then check out our tips for booking one:
- Consider hiring someone who specialises in managing events at small boat venues in London; this person will know what has worked well in the past and can help guide you through planning yours. Although hiring a professional might be an expense in itself, it might just save you from paying huge fees if you were doing it by yourself instead.
- Serving alcohol and other beverages? You probably are, in that case you might want to consider a BYOB option which is sure to cut some costs. Bring your own alcohol and drinks and pay a fraction of the final price.
- Negotiate ! There’s no better option for cutting costs than negotiating with the venue host. Depending on the time of year, week or for how long you’d like to book the boat, the host might just go down on the price!
Are there any special permits required for hosting an event in a small boat in London?
Yes, this will include having a valid navigation licence for the boat , which the boat hire company typically manages. You may need to secure an event permit if your event involves activities like live music, catering, or large gatherings. Additionally, adherence to safety regulations set by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency is crucial, including ensuring necessary safety equipment and respecting capacity limits. For events serving alcohol or featuring live entertainment, a Temporary Event Notice from the local council might be required. Environmental considerations are also important, particularly for events that could impact the environment. It is recommended to consult with the boat hire company and local authorities to ensure all legal requirements are met. For more detailed information and permit applications, visit the Port of London Authority's website .

Why London might stop adding names to its urgent waitlist for Rent-Geared-To-Income Housing
A five-year waitlist and ongoing livability challenges at Rent-Geared-To-Income (RGI) Housing in the London-Middlesex region might prompt changes to how prospective tenants are prioritized when units become available.
City council will soon decide if a temporary measure to accept just 20 per cent of new London Middlesex Community Housing (LMCH) tenants from its Urgent Waitlist and the remainder from a Chronological Waitlist (based on application date) should be made permanent.
A new report to the Community and Protective Services (CAPS) Committee admits that the past practice of prioritizing high-needs individuals on the Urgent Waitlist, “often leads to a high concentration of tenants in RGI housing buildings with significant support needs but inadequate support, resulting in negative impacts such as building damage, cleanliness issues, hoarding, violence, fires, floods, criminal behavior, unit takeovers, and pest infestations.”
Renee, 24, who lives with her children in an LMCH community, told CTV News that she routinely witnesses many of those challenges, “There's peoples’ houses getting raided. There are stabbings. There are fights. It's ridiculous. It's unsafe. And, you know, some people want to make it out of here, but they're stuck.”
Currently, the Urgent Waitlist contains three categories:
- Medical: Person(s) under continual medical supervision due to a terminal illness, those physically disabled to the extent they cannot live in current accommodations, or those who must relocate to London for medical treatment.
- Social: Person(s) whose personal safety is significantly at risk and where legal interventions have been exhausted.
- Homeless: Person(s) living in condemned housing, households awaiting child custody return contingent on adequate housing, and those without permanent residence or relying on emergency shelters.
The staff report recommends no longer adding new households or individuals to the Urgent Waitlist starting Sept. 25.
Instead, high-needs individuals would be connected to more appropriate housing with supports for their specific needs.
The change would allow RGI units to be prioritized for Special Priority Individuals and victims of human trafficking, “over housed” RGI tenants with vacant bedrooms who need to be moved into smaller units, and finally the 20/80 split between the waitlists until the urgent list is exhausted.
Locally, there are 6,720 units in the RGI system.
In 2023, the number of households on the two waitlists totalled almost 7,000.
Rising demand means households on the Chronological Waitlist are spending about five years to be placed in a unit— the average length of time on the Urgent Waitlist has risen to almost four years.
Renee described how it felt waiting for a home she could afford, “I didn't have anywhere to go. I had to rely on other people and stay in a shelter. Most of the time, shelters wouldn't even have a place to go either.”
The Community and Protective Services Committee will consider the report at its meeting on Monday.
