ALFA NERO Oceanco | From EUR€ 812,000 /wk
Motor yacht ALFA NERO is a large Oceanco steel and aluminium superyacht being 81.27 m (266' 8") in length and 14.20m (46' 7") at her widest point. She was built by Oceanco Yachts (who undertook her naval architecture) and designed by Nuvolari & Lenard with Alberto Pinto collaborating on the interior. She has luxurious accommodation for 12 charter guests in 6 cabins.
NOTABLE FEATURES: ~Infinity pool with glass waterfall sliding convertible to helipad - can be raised for less depth for children ~Beauty salon ~Hairdressing salon ~Beach club ~Vast master suite with private deck ~Spa pool ~Night club ~Gym
An icon in yachting, she is one of the truly magnificent luxury yachts created and available for charter. Her outstanding design and construction methods are very innovative and advanced to the extent that she evolved the way many superyacht designers and builders approached luxury yacht creation. The exterior design of the yacht presented a step forward in large yacht design with many award and accolades following her launch.
It was almost as if those responsible for ALFA NERO – the yacht designers, Oceanco and the yacht owner - set aside established luxury motor yacht design concepts and instead began afresh. The result is a balanced and elegant mega yacht which is extremely easy on the eye without compromise to the availability of every conceivable amenity.
Inside, she boasts three separate dining areas, a dance room, a gym as well as pantries on each three guest decks. A lift services and connects all decks. She has pop art inspired interiors with a nautical theme, with details such as side tables resembling stag-horn coral and seashell images in the guest hallway. The elevator shaft is in glass and is wrapped around by an intricate staircase. ALFA NERO is definitely elegant and luxurious. She has a Kaleidescape audio-visual system and a saloon Cinema.
Her dramatic black steel hull reflects the gently lapping waves like a basalt mirror white her light superstructure and large pool offer pleasing contrasts. ALFA NERO is a very large high volume yacht, yet her lines are sleek and graceful. Her roomy aft structure open and frees any bulk in her roomy upper superstructure.
ALFA NERO’s aft deck is perhaps her most idiosyncratic and famous feature. Here the unusually large swimming pool, complete with glass waterfall siding, converts to a heli pad. This is where form and function are harmoniously married. A very innovative aspect to the yacht the area includes settees which flank a skylight window.
Wenge wood panels surround both sky lounge and dining room. Scalloped panels are lacquered in white creating a mother-of-pearl feel, a textured effect reminiscent of abstracted golf balls.
As with many well designed large private yachts, the upper deck lends itself exclusively to the yacht owner's residence. This area is spacious and beautiful and is appropriately fit for a Roman Emperor, which the yacht is named after.
The Dutch shipbuilder Oceanco and Italian designer Dan Lenard have won immense admiration for this yacht. Alfa Nero has garnered awards in Europe, the US and even Asia for a styling.

ALFA NERO Enquiry
"When required, the main-deck pool morphs into a helipad. Attention was given to the design of the heli-platform under the weight of a helicopter. By moving the platform up and down using spindles instead of levers or hydraulic cylinders, there is less chance of the platform accidentally lowering due to the weight." - Yacht Build Project Manager Jeroen Mulder

Superyacht abandoned by a Russian fertilizer billionaire has a new secret owner, who got it for a huge discount
The Alfa Nero superyacht, which has been abandoned in the Caribbean for more than two years, has a new owner.
The 267-foot (81-meter) vessel, complete with a baby grand piano and a swimming pool that turns into a helipad, sold for $40 million last week, said Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the US. He declined to name the buyer, citing a confidentiality agreement.
The sale marks the latest attempt to end the years-long Alfa Nero saga. A Russian oligarch abandoned the luxury yacht in Antigua in March 2022, after being sanctioned by the US Treasury. Then tech billionaire Eric Schmidt tried buying it at auction, only to give up when the sale became a legal quagmire.
Meanwhile, the vessel sat in Antigua’s Falmouth Harbour being tended to by a skeleton crew and costing over a $100,000 a month to maintain.
At $40 million, the new Alfa Nero owner will end up paying far less than the $67.6 million that Schmidt, a former Google CEO, had offered last year. Sanctioned Russian fertilizer billionaire Andrey Guryev had originally bought the Alfa Nero in 2014 for $120 million, the US Treasury Department said — which Guryev denies.
His daughter, Yulia Gurieva-Motlokhov, later stepped forward to claim ownership of the yacht, triggering a legal dispute.
“It’s not worth 40 million, it’s worth way more,” said Richard Higgins, a broker with Northrop & Johnson who represented the undisclosed buyer. “They needed to get the boat sold.”
Higgins said the new owner is European and will likely put the Alfa Nero on the charter market.
The Alfa Nero is among more than a dozen superyachts pinned down in ports around the globe after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 brought a series of economic sanctions against Russian oligarchs. Many of the vessels have been stuck in limbo amid costly legal disputes and racking up maintenance costs.
The Phi superyacht has been moored in London since 2022 while other vessels are stuck in Italy and Spain. There’s also the Amadea, a 348-foot ship with a lobster tank and hand-painted clouds on the dining-room ceiling, which was seized from its alleged oligarch owner in Fiji and now sits in California. Last month, a New York court denied the US government’s request to sell the Amadea, Voice of America reported .
Alfa Nero’s new owner “is not included in the sanctions list of any country or institution,” Ambassador Sanders said.
The latest attempt to sell the Alfa Nero was brokered through a private contract, the port manager, Darwin Telemaque, said in a phone call. He also declined to name the buyer. Telemaque expects the proceeds will cover the millions of dollars in port fees the Alfa Nero has racked up.
“I am very happy that the ship is no longer the responsibility of the people and the government of Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.

Motor Yacht
Motor yacht Alfa Nero was launched in 2007 by renowned Dutch shipyard OceAnco, bursting onto the yachting scene with uncommon fervour by breaking the contemporary mould of large superyacht design. At 82 metres her build triggered a paradigm shift in luxury yacht design with exteriors by the celebrated team at Nuvolari & Lenard and interiors from the talented Alberto Pinto.
Constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, Alfa Nero can accommodate 12 guests in six lavish cabins. With 1,250-square metres of living space across her 82 metre hull, she provides plenty of space for a bridge deck gym, three separate dining areas, a dance room, pantries on the three guest decks, a separate crew lounge, and a lift servicing and connecting all decks.
The build of motor yacht Alfa Nero was driven by a desire to offer her owners the ultimate luxury cruising experience in their home sailing grounds of the Mediterranean, maximising the lifestyle elements of this part of the world.
This easily recognisable luxury vessel is anything but short of innovative facilities. Amongst her stand-out features is the Nuvolari-designed aft deck ‘beach club’ which features an immense glass-ended pool whose floor can be partially or fully raised, transforming it into a dance floor or helipad on demand.
Her exterior is highlighted by a long, low stern which dominates a large proportion of the super yacht’s length and leads her sleek profile. To outside on-lookers, her most eye-catching feature is the open aft deck and minimal overhangs that offer a departure from conventional design. Each overhang is defined by a stainless steel, oval rail that serves a purpose as illuminative, decorative or environmental.
Outdoor living is undoubtedly a significant feature of her design as she features an impressive amount of space for leisure and entertainment including the 7 x 3.5m swimming pool which stands as one of the largest ever incorporated on a yacht.
The pop-art inspired Pinto interior hints at a nautical theme, particularly evident in details such as side tables resembling staghorn coral and seashell images lining the guest hallway. The intricate staircase wrapping around the glass elevator shaft, two al fresco spa-pools, massage room and gym only add to the subtle elegance of the luxurious vessel.
Amongst her six cabins are an indulgent master stateroom; two double VIP suites; one double guest cabin; and two twin guest cabins. Luxury yacht Alfa Nero is powered by two MTU 4,680hp diesel engines that allow her to reach a maximum speed of 20 knots and cruise comfortably at 18.

One just recently came off the sanctions list and straight onto the charter market for $3.2 million per week. Others have been confiscated. Still others are hiding in plain sight in Dubai and Turkey. How the many legal battles get resolved remains unclear.

“The Malaysian flag is open for business and picking up yachts that have been dropped from flags like the Cayman Islands,” says Peter Bennett, founder of Bluewater Yachting Dubai. “It doesn’t have an issue servicing these yachts provided they comply with IMO and SOLAS.”
At least 20 vessels have been seized or detained following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Nine superyachts have been sanctioned by the U.S. Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC). Among the highest-profile yachts affected are Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian businessman Andrey Melnichenko, and Dilbar , the world’s largest yacht by gross tonnage, owned by Alisher Usmanov.
Sailing Yacht A remains under arrest in Trieste, while the $600 million Dilbar , which was undergoing maintenance works at Lürssen when it was placed under export control sanctions, is being held in a floating dock at the builder’s Hamburg facilities.
“We’re seeing activity in Turkey and the UAE since [the Russian-owned yachts] are all concentrated there,” says a CEO of a European shipyard who asking not to be named. “We’ve heard of Russians buying used yachts in Turkey and building new boats there. We’ve even heard of them going to China for a new build, thanks to the relationship between Russia and China.”
Brokers based in the U.S., the U.K., and the EU are strongly advised, and in many cases prohibited, from working with Russians. Some brokers have chosen to relocate to countries like Dubai as a workaround.
“The few people I see operating with non-sanctioned Russians and managing Russian yachts are simply pro-business,” says a British sales broker who requested to remain anonymous.
Some North American charter clients now request a statement to confirm there is no Russian nexus involved on a yacht. Sales brokers routinely check if there’s a Russian connection with a potential sale. “It’s not due to anti-Russian bias, but to reassure their client there won’t be any red-tape hurdles,” says the broker. “We can’t adopt a Cold War mentality where we don’t like Russians because that’s not the case.”
Any yacht that is open to asset seizure is also open to liquidation. Following a failed attempt by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt in 2023 to acquire Alfa Nero at auction , the 266-foot Oceanco was privately sold by the Antigua & Barbuda Port Authority in July 2024 for $40 million ($80 million less than Andrey Guryev is presumed to have paid in 2014).
“Not only is the premise of each detention questionable, but so is any subsequent acquisition by a third party,” says Leonida. “The Government of Antigua & Barbuda has indemnified the buyer of Alfa Nero for any future losses or third-party claims connected with the sale, thus making the legality of the sale uncertain. This is a long way from a clean legal opinion that would hold the sale as being unimpeachable.”
Amadea , which was detained in Fiji by U.S. authorities, was ruled “too costly” for the government to maintain by the Fijian Supreme Court. Now docked in San Diego, the U.S. government pays more than $10 million a year for its upkeep. There is certainly an appetite to purchase a sanctioned yacht at a reduced price, but buyers are put off by the inevitable media scrutiny, and the risk of being exposed to expensive post-war legal fights.
“Most yachts are owned by companies, not individuals, and the legal ownership may not be directly linked to the [Russian] individuals involved,” says Leonida. “Sanctions are not a valid reason to pierce the corporate veil unless, for example, the company is being used to evade sanctions, which is not the declared case with these yachts.”
Shipyards that had Russian yachts in build when the sanctions hit have also been directly impacted. Damen Shipyards initiated a lawsuit against the Dutch government in 2023 in a bid to reclaim costs incurred from the cancellation of delivery contracts for “several superyachts.”
For most sanctioned yachts, the future remains unclear. “One of the hardest issues within brokerage is that a lot of classification societies don’t want Russian business,” says the broker. “If the boat can’t get into class, it can’t be chartered, and if it can’t go onto the flag state that you want or be insured through the London market, then it starts to become more complicated.”
“The policy makers have left these superyachts in limbo,” adds Leonida. “A dangerous corporate law precedent has been set, which the courts will be asked to put right at some point in the future.”
When that is, exactly, is the big unknown.

Inside the Wild International Battle Over an Abandoned Superyacht
The fight over the alfa nero pits a google billionaire against the daughter of a russian oligarch..
Senior Reporter
In an inlet in Antigua, surrounded by touristy hotels and kitschy cafes, a yacht nearly three times the size of a basketball court and twice the price of a luxury private jet sits unused, awaiting its fate.
The Alfa Nero, one of the largest superyachts in the world, is the reported—but not confirmed— property of Russian oligarch Andrey Guryev, a top target of sanctions imposed by the U.S. after the invasion of Ukraine last year. Thanks to a tangled mess of international restrictions and offshore ownership, its future is now the subject of a three-way battle between Guryev’s daughter, the government of Antigua and Barbuda, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt . And none of them know where the Alfa Nero will be this time next year.
“This whole damn thing has been like a Tom Clancy novel,” Darwin Telemaque, chief executive of the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority, told the London Times last month. “And I’m stuck in the middle.”

The Alfa Nero was constructed in 2007 for Greek shipping and steel magnate Theodore Angelopolous by Oceanco, the same company that built Jeff Bezos’ $500 million megayacht. The ship, which is 269 feet long, boasts three double cabins, two VIP cabins, a master suite, a living area, a gym, an office, two hot tubs, and a pool that converts into a helicopter landing pad. The interior features a nautical theme, with imagery like seashells and staghorn coral; its current owners have further adorned it with artwork by Joan Miró and a baby grand piano.
Angelopolous put the yacht up for sale multiple times between 2009 and 2014, when— according to the U.S. Treasury —Guryev purchased it for $120 million. Guryev, however, has denied owning the yacht, telling Bloomberg he “neither owns nor controls the Alfa Nero” and simply leases it for commercial charter “from time to time.”
Guryev is the 25th richest man in Russia, and an incredibly private one. Raised in a small town outside Moscow, he trained to be a martial artist and for a time taught judo to USSR sports authorities. He worked in local politics and at a major bank before founding PhosAgro, the biggest manufacturer of phosphate fertilizers in Europe, skyrocketing his net worth to an estimated $9.6 billion.
According to a New Yorker profile, Guryev is the likely owner of Witanhurst, the second-largest home in London after Buckingham Palace, though he has denied this, too. Despite working in politics on and off throughout his life and serving as a Russian senator for over a decade, he has never given an interview or made a speech in the federal legislature. His family is equally private; the most public attention they have received is when his daughter-in-law, Valeria Guryeva, posted on Instagram that she was “too pretty for work,” sparking international headlines.
That is, until 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine and Guryev was placed on the top list of Russians sanctioned by the U.S. and U.K. Suddenly, anything the billionaire was said to own was under strict scrutiny—including the Alfa Nero.
At the time, the ship was docked at Falmouth Harbour in Saint Paul Parish, Antigua. In August, the U.S. sent a team of FBI agents to search the vessel and concluded it belonged to Guryev through a complicated series of offshore companies that traced back to his control. (Another Russian businessman, Alexander Mavrodi, tried to claim the yacht was his, but the government dismissed this as “either a hoax or … a deliberate fabrication.”) Guryev maintained that the yacht did not belong to him.
As the war continued and the sanctions dragged on, the Alfa Nero sat unclaimed, burning through diesel and taking up space in the yacht club marina. The original 44 crew members were winnowed down to six, who passed their time lounging in lawn chairs on the deck or playing “Call of Duty” in the master suite, according to Bloomberg . Twenty-five members sued for millions in unpaid wages over the spring.
The government of Antigua and Barbuda, meanwhile, started to get antsy. Prime Minister Agston Browne complained the yacht was a security risk: It could spring a leak, catch fire, or set off any other number of calamities. “The yachting sector contributes more to our economy than even the cruise tourism sector,” he told the Antigua Observer . “Understand the reputational damage if we fail to act and we end up with a major catastrophe.”
Finally, in March, the islands’ government declared that the owner of the yacht had 10 days to claim it before it was auctioned to the highest bidder, with the proceeds going toward Antigua and Barbuda’s national debt. In April, the vessel was officially seized, and in June, the U.S. Treasury Department removed it from its list of blocked property. According to the Times , the government heard from 30 interested buyers, 16 of whom could prove they had the cash on hand and six of whom passed money-laundering checks. The final bids were submitted in sealed envelopes to the accountant general of the Antiguan treasury.
On June 16, the Anitguan government announced Schmidt, who is worth an estimated $20.4 billion, had the winning bid at $67.6 million—a 4 percent bump to the country’s gross domestic product. The former Google honcho, who owns another 195-foot yacht and a $20 million private plane, was instructed to make payment within seven days. Telemaque, the port executive, was thrilled. “I just want to see it gone,” he told the Times .
He may have spoken too soon.
In late May, a month before the auction, lawyers for a company called Flying Dutchman Overseas Limited filed suit in the Supreme Court of Antigua and Barbuda claiming it owns the Alfa Nero and had tried to assert ownership of it in the days before its seizure. It asked the court to block the sale, claiming officials had ignored its repeated attempts to lay claim to the boat. The judge on the case agreed that there may have been “procedural unfairness” in the seizure, but refused to stop the sale. Schmidt’s purchase went through eight days later.
But just this month, another obstacle appeared: Guryev’s daughter, Yulia Guryeva-Motlokhov, who lives in London with her hedge-fund manager husband Alexei Motlokhov. (The two recently caused a stir for trying to build a massive playground in the backyard of their $6 million, five-bedroom home, which neighbors deemed “more like a theme park.”) In an appeal filed July 12, Guryeva-Motlokhov claimed she is the sole beneficiary of the trust that owns the Flying Dutchman, and thus the rightful owner of the Alfa Nero.
In her appeal, she claimed that the Antiguan government did not have the right to sell off her property and that the auction had been improperly executed, according to the Antigua Observer .
Her attorney, David Dorsett, told the Observer he intends to fight for her right to the superyacht, adding: “We just want our boat back.”
“We think the action of the government in taking possession of the yacht and selling the yacht is wrong on all levels,” he said. “It is not the government’s yacht; they cannot just take it up and sell it to somebody else.”

The government hit back with a counter-appeal of its own last week, arguing that Guryeva-Motlokhov had no standing in the case.
The attorney general, Steadroy Benjamin, told The Daily Beast the two sides were in court over the matter on July 18 but declined to answer any further questions. Dorsett did not respond to calls and emails seeking comment.
Schmidt, meanwhile, is reportedly withholding payment until the matter is resolved. The government of Antigua and Barbuda is scrambling to get him to pay up, even offering to indemnify him from any future liabilities created by the suits. The country’s parliament is scheduled to vote on approving these legal guarantees soon, with the hope of expediting the sales process.
Information Minister Melford Nicholas told reporters earlier this month that the government is “certainly committed to executing the Alfa Nero sale,” but growing anxious.
“A legal position is that we should wait until all legal proceedings are done,” he said at a press conference July 9, according to the Carribean Times . “The question is, how much time can we reasonably afford?”

Antigua and Barbuda’s plan to sell Russian oligarch Andrey Guryev’s $120 million superyacht may fail miserably as a man from Moscow is now claiming ownership of the Alfa Nero – The Carribean nation had even amended its law to auction the vessel.
Russian billionaire Andrey Guryev’s seized $120 million superyacht Alfa Nero is currently embroiled in a lot of legal back and forth. The gorgeous 279 feet long vessel has been aimlessly led for over a year with no clear destination in sight. First, the owners turned off the location transponders on the ship in early March 2022. The authorities were clueless about the whereabouts of the modern floating palace.
