SAILING YACHT A – World’s Biggest Sailing Yacht – $600 Million
SAILING YACHT A measures 143 meters making her the world’s biggest sailing yacht.
SAILING YACHT A is far more than a luxury vessel. She is a masterpiece of design and innovation combining sleek metal surfaces with futuristic naval architecture that took over two years to complete.
Launched in 2017, both the interior and exterior of this mega sailing yacht were designed by Phillippe Starck, who calls SAILING YACHT A one of his most high-profile projects.
The superyacht has taken on voyages all around the world and was most recently spotted sailing off the coasts of Gibraltar and Cyprus.

SAILING YACHT A interior
Both the interior and exterior of SAILING YACHT A were designed by Philippe Starck , a French architect known for his wide range of design projects.
He famously worked on the impressive MOTOR YACHT A, and the two iconic vessels share a lot of similarities in their layout and specifications.
Both yachts look incredibly futuristic and are sure to attract attention wherever they go.
While no exact details are known about the interior of SAILING YACHT A, it is rumored that she has an underwater observation pod with 30 cm (1 ft) thick glass located in the keel of the vessel.
This is one of the few parts where design mockups are publicly available, and the style of the interior can be examined.
The observation pod appears to have cream upholstery that stretches across the floor and ceiling of the cabin.
Two large symmetrical glass windows allow guests to view the breathtaking underwater world without even having to leave the yacht.
A third window is located at the bottom of the pod, which lets it feel like a true 360-degree experience and is almost comparable to a submarine.
A small floating side table provides guests with a space to place drinks or snacks in the pod and enjoy a one-of-a-kind dining experience in this unusual location.
Since the pod is located at the keel of the yacht, the large propellers are most likely visible from the windows suggesting it is most commonly used at anchor.
The superyacht has ten cabins that can accommodate 20 guests as well as a further 54 crew member.
Paparazzi photos and the work of yacht spotters provide a rare glimpse into the interior of SAILING YACHT A.
No official footage of cabins or salons has been released, although Starck’s past work suggests that the yacht would be furnished with opulent elements that perfectly combine luxury with style.
Silver and metal decorations play a large role and tie the interior design of the yacht together.
However, SAILING YACHT A was launched much later than her motorized companion suggesting her interior might be more modern with minimalistic elements rather than lavish furnishings.
Occasional photographs shot through open doors, and portholes show expensive art pieces decorating the interior of the yacht and rather absurd design choices like a set of chairs shaped like large human heads.
The yacht appears to feature a large, open salon with an elevated seating area and symmetrical arches on either side.
While details aren’t known to the public, it is rumored that SAILING YACHT A features a luxurious spa area, a sizable gym as well as an owner’s suite with several rooms that is only accessible via fingerprint.
The massive private area is said to feature a 60-inch television that disappears into the floor as well as a rotating bed.
Considering she is the largest sailing yacht in the world, it is surprising that SAILING YACHT A can only host 20 guests.
This suggests that there are spacious entertainment areas located on board, including several saloons and ample below-deck space for crew members.
Due to her large size and a small number of cabins, it is assumed that SAILING YACHT A can welcome a large number of day guests onboard for special events and celebrations.
Biggest sailing yacht controversy
It has been the topic of debate that SAILING YACHT A is not the largest yacht in the world but instead the ‘largest sail-assisted motor yacht.
Depending on the definition used, that would make BLACK PEARL the biggest sailing yacht in the world.
The most expensive sailing yacht
SAILING YACHT A is the most expensive sailing yacht in the world and cost an estimated price of US $600 million – a relatively “affordable” price considering her large size and tonnage.
A calculated US $48,000 per ton is considered low in the yachting industry, where European yachts are usually priced at US $60,000 per ton and over.
This average price would bring the value of SAILING YACHT A up to nearly US $800 million. However, due to the fact that the official sales price has not been released to the public, these numbers are mere estimates and cannot be validated officially.
Since the yacht is a custom project and one of a kind, it can be assumed that the total value of SAILING YACHT A lies far higher than her initial price.
In addition to any cost for the crew, supplies, and docking fees, she has annual running costs of US $50-75 million.
SAILING YACHT A is currently not available for sale or charter.
Specifications
SAILING YACHT A is incredibly large for a sailing yacht, and even compared to the longest motor yachts in the world, she would rank in the top ten.
Paired with her unusual futuristic design, this mega sailing yacht has a length of 143 meters (469 ft), a beam of 25 meters (82 ft), and a draft of 8 meters (26 ft) making her a more than an impressive vessel.
SAILING YACHT A was built by Nobiskrug , a German superyacht builder at their Kiel shipyard, and launched in 2017 after more than two years of construction.
To date, SAILING YACHT A is the largest yacht ever built by Nobiskrug and remains their flagship.
It is considered the most complicated project to ever be completed in the sailing industry and gained international media attention on its launch date. It has a total volume of 12.558 tons and is powered by hybrid diesel-electric engines.
SAILING YACHT A is considered the longest sailing yacht in the world and is more than 36 meters (118 ft) longer than BLACK PEARL, which ranks in second place on the list.
Coincidentally her project name was WHITE PEARL which is a reference to her brilliant white exterior, although it couldn’t have referred to BLACK PEARL since she was only launched in 2018, a year after Melnichenko’s masterpiece.
Her three-carbon masts stand at an impressive 100 meters (328 ft), making them some of the largest in the world and taller than Big Ben in London.
However, her large size is sometimes also limiting as she struggles to fit underneath most bridges and is therefore constrained to certain routes.
She once passed under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with only 20 feet to spare between her masts and the bottom of the famous bridge.
She is rumored to have an electric gimbal crow’s nest, which allows for remote operation and advanced wind measurements. Her sails are all white, and her masts have nearly sickle-like shapes, which add to her striking futuristic appearance.
It is noteworthy that she is commonly photographed with her sails down, which suggests she might be using her support engines more frequently than true wind power.
With a sail area of more than 3.700m^2 (40.000 square ft), she can reach top speeds of up to 21 knots which is supported by her twin 4895 Horsepower MTU engines .
Her average cruise speed lies at 16 knots, and her total range is estimated to lie at 5320 nautical miles. She features a state-of-the-art sail system that is able to raise and lower the sails and anchors at the touch of a button.
SAILING YACHT A has a steel hull and composite steel superstructure, which is unusual in the superyacht industry as most shipyards choose aluminum to reduce weight and keep the vessel light.
She currently sails under the flag of Bermuda, which is common for prominent sailing yachts.
During construction, SAILING YACHT A was called project WHITE PEARL, a fitting name for this sizable vessel.
Like her interior, the exterior of SAILING YACHT A was designed by Philippe Starck, although the Dutch studio Dykstra Naval Architects played a role in the naval architecture of the vessel.
They specialize in sailing yachts of all sizes and have been involved in many prominent projects in the industry over the years.
She features eight teak decks with a large swimming pool located in the center and several elevators spread across the yacht.
She is even said to carry a submarine. The main pool is lowered into the deck allowing for additional privacy for the owners.
Her hull has 24 shell doors, which are used to access equipment and provide additional deck space if needed. She is accompanied by four tenders also designed by Philippe Starck and built by Lloyd Stevenson in New Zealand.
Their sleek and elegant design matches that of the main vessel, and they are used for transporting guests and taking them on excursions.
One of the tenders of SAILING YACHT A is a carbon fiber speedboat especially reserved for the owner who can operate the vessel autonomously whenever required without the aid of crew members.
This allows Melnichenko, who is a fan of driving high-speed cars to be independent when staying aboard his luxury yacht. The tender is small but powerful, reaching speeds of up to 53 knots.
The larger tenders can seat up to eight passengers and feature panoramic windows ideal for sightseeing and exploring but are much slower at only 30 knots.
The aft features a large garage used for storing jet skis, tenders, and other equipment.
High-profile artists such as Snoop Dogg are rumored to have performed here, although detailed evidence of such concerts remains unknown.
Whenever the aft isn’t used for performances or parties, it can be transformed into a swimming platform designed in the yacht’s iconic futuristic style.
However, despite her cutting-edge design features, SAILING YACHT A surprisingly also includes classic nautical elements. She has a wooden steering wheel that is reminiscent of a pirate ship, although it is not operational.
The captain of the vessel can instead use modern technologies to operate the massive yacht via a small joystick and touchscreen.
There are symmetric extendable balconies that protrude from the bridge of the yacht and allow the crew to have a better view to be able to gauge the dimensions of the immense vessel.
Of course, SAILING YACHT A has a modern underwater lighting system that illuminates the vessel perfectly at night.

Italian Police Seize Russian Oligarch Andrey Melnichenko’s 468-Foot ‘Sailing Yacht A’
The list keeps growing with the impoundment of "sailing yacht a" and suspicion that "scheherazade" might be connected to vladimir putin., michael verdon, michael verdon's most recent stories.

Italy’s finance police seized one of the world’s most iconic sailing yachts, owned by a Russian oligarch. Andrey Melnichenko’s Sailing Yacht A , with an estimated value of $578 million, was impounded in dry dock at the Port of Trieste, according to a statement from the Guardia di Finanzia. Melninchenko was sanctioned by the European Union on March 9 as part of a group of Russian oligarchs who met with Russian President Vladimir Putin following its Ukraine invasion to discuss the potential economic impact of EU and American sanctions.

Melnichenko owns the major fertilizer producer EuroChem Group and SUEK, a coal company. He also owns the 390-foot Motor Yacht A. A spokesperson said in a statement that Melnichenko has nothing to do with politics and that he has removed himself from the board of Eurochem and SUEK after the EU sanctioned him. “He has no relation to the tragic events in Ukraine. He has no political affiliations,” said the statement.
US intelligence officials have also said they are trying to link the Scheherazade , a $700 million superyacht in dry dock in Italy, to Putin. The New York Times reported that the US government has made no definite conclusions about the yacht’s ownership, but believe it could be owned by the Russian president. The yacht’s captain, Guy Bennett-Pearce, told the Times that Putin had no stake in the yacht, but declined to name the owner. Bennett-Pearce said he would provide Italian police with documents that divulged the owner’s name. The Italian Sea Group, which owns the shipyard where Scheherazade is dry docked, said that, based on “checks carried out by relevant authorities,” the yacht is “not attributable to the property of Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich was also added to the UK sanctions list days after he announced the sale of the football club. Abramovich, who owns a string of supercars and several private jets, also owns the superyachts Solaris and Eclipse. Solaris is reportedly sailing towards Israel, where Abramovich has dual citizenship.
On March 3, France’s finance ministry said that it had impounded Amore Vero , a yacht owned by Igor Sechin, CEO of Russian oil giant Rosneft. The EU had sanctioned Sechin earlier that week, calling him one of Putin’s “most trusted and closest advisors, as well as his personal friend.” German authorities also detained the 512-foot superyacht Dilbar in Hamburg, owned by Alisher Usmanov. Reports said the crew was fired last week. On March 5, Italian authorities impounded two yachts, Lena and Lady M , owned by Gennady Timchenko and Alexei Mordashov, respectively.
On Friday, the US State Department placed Viktor Vekselberg on its sanctions list. Two of Vekeselberg’s luxury assets, an Airbus A319-115 jet and his yacht Tango , were identified as “blocked property.”

The seizures have prompted the superyacht industry to distance itself from the oligarchs. Italian yacht builders Sanlorenzo and Azimut both released statements that they have limited exposure to Russian clients, and none are on the sanctions list. Heesen Yachts released a statement that two Russians sitting on its supervisory board of directors have resigned their positions. The builder said Heesen is 100-percent Dutch-owned company and that Pavel Sukhoruchkin and Pavel Novoselov had nothing to do with its day-to-day operations.
Ownership of many Russian yachts is often hidden by shell companies in tax havens like the Cayman Islands. They are not only hard to trace, but actually seizing and selling them could present a legal quagmire that could take years to resolve.
Some are wondering whether seizing the oligarchs’ private yachts and jets will work. “Sanctions are another example of the West doing what it does best, which is just throwing a lot of cash at the problem and hoping it gets solved,” Olga Chyzh, a professor of political science at the University of Toronto, told the Washington Post. “However sad they are to let go of their Western assets, oligarchs have even more to lose if Putin is no longer there to protect them.”
Eclipse is another yacht owned by Roman Abramovich. Robb Report File
In the meantime, some oligarchs are taking their yachts to destinations like the Maldives , the Seychelles and Dubai, which have no extradition treaties with the US and EU. Dubai has become a favorite destination for Russian tourism and wealth.
Alex Finley, a former CIA officer, has been tracking the yachts from Barcelona. Using the hashtag “Yacht Watch,” she posts updates on Twitter for Russian-owned superyachts.
“For me, the yachts are a big, easily recognizable symbol of the more serious side of this [Russian invasion]: These are people who support a dictator, and have been supporting him in carrying out destabilization operations against democracy, while at the same time coming here and taking all the benefits of the exact same democracies they were destabilizing,” Finley told the Washington Post.

Bayesian is a custom sailing yacht launched in 2008 by Perini Navi, in Italy.
Credited with a combination of technical brilliance and first class design, Perini Navi has always been in a class of its own. In 1982, unable to find a yacht suited to his personal concepts and ideas, Fabio Perini designed and built the first prototype of what would prove to be the most successful series of large sailing yachts in the world.
Bayesian measures 56.00 metres in length, with a max draft of 9.73 metres and a beam of 11.51 metres. She has a gross tonnage of 473 tonnes. She has a deck material of teak.
Bayesian has an aluminium hull with an aluminium superstructure.
Her interior design is by Remi Tessier.
Bayesian also features naval architecture by Ron Holland Design.
Performance and Capabilities
Bayesian has a top speed of 15.60 knots and a cruising speed of 12.50 knots. She is powered by a twin screw propulsion system.
Bayesian has a fuel capacity of 50,000 litres, and a water capacity of 12,400 litres.
She also has a range of 3,600 nautical miles.
Accommodation
Bayesian accommodates up to 10 guests in 6 cabins. She also houses room for up to 9 crew members.
Other Specifications
Bayesian is MCA compliant, her hull NB is C.2095.
Bayesian is an A.B.S.: Malta cross A1 AMS Yachting Service class yacht.

RM 890+: our 30-foot / 9m sailboat
A true cruising yacht in a 30-footer.
Since its launch in 2013, the RM890+ never stopped to surprise and seduce. The goal was to conceive a true cruiser, with loads of living space, comfort yet performance, at ease for both coastal cruising and port-hopping. In her different versions – twin-keel or fin keel – this fast 30ft sailboat is easy to sail, and quick to set up.
As soon as sails are hoisted, you will feel a lively boat, very much responsive and sensitive to trim, reacting to the first rise. Once breeze comes in, her large-beamed and powerful hull will make you feel totally safe.
“THE SENSATIONS OF A RACING BOAT IN A FAMILY CRUISER : THE RM890+ IS ALL ABOUT POLYVALENCE”
Space, volume, and light: modern and comfortable interior
In a cruising yacht, one might be tempted to divide the available surface into smaller areas. In our 30-foot sailboat, we decided to opt for an approach that fosters volume and light for the interior.
When opening the companion way, you will be surprised by this feeling of space: everything contributes to a global well-being: the small stairs for an easy access, a 180-degree visibility thanks to large windows, as well as the absence of bulkheads that creates an unmatched living space.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Learn more about the specs of the RM890+, and you will understand why she is a very consistent monohull yacht, with flattering ratios, never scarifying comfort nor performance.

As if you were already in, let’s have a look at the bright interior of the RM890+.
Should only large yachts be elegant?
Designing a 30ft liveaboard sailing yacht is a complex job: one would like to find all the benefits of a cruiser within a limited space. Most of the time, if the result is functional, it is rarely elegant.
With the RM890+, Marc Lombard Design team managed to draw a very elegant plywood sailing boat of nearly 9 meters, with well-balanced proportions. As a matter of fact, when you will see an RM890+ under sail, you will probably be surprised by her elegance: her proportions are perfect, and you might confuse her with a larger yacht!

Solaris 50 review: fast, fun cruising
- Rupert Holmes
- January 13, 2023
A sleek 50-footer with comfort, rewarding sailing qualities and performance, plus easy handling the Solaris 50 offers fun and rewarding sailing
Product Overview
Price as reviewed:.
The drive to include all the features we now expect of new yachts, such as easy handling, big cockpits for al fresco dining and huge accommodation volumes, all too often risks compromising the fundamentals of creating a yacht that’s fun and rewarding to sail. When developing its latest range of 40-60 footers, however, Solaris tackled these aspects as a top priority as is on display in the middle model, the Solaris 50.
An optimised helming experience is intended as a key feature. Designer Javier Soto Acebel deliberately pushed the helm stations as far out to the sides of the hull as possible to maximise the view and make it possible to see the full length of the headsail luff – something that’s difficult on many of today’s yachts. Despite the boat’s 16 tonne displacement, the steering is direct and responsive, with twin rudders offering excellent control.
This direct focus on the owner’s experience when sailing the boat also hints at the yard’s understanding that to be successful in today’s market requires more than producing great physical products – the overall ownership experience counts as well. More on that later.
There’s one drawback that, on paper at least, might be significant for a cruising yacht: there’s no proper helm seat. When sailing upwind I often like to sit on the side deck, with my feet braced against the pedestal – it’s a position that can be comfortable for hours at a stretch.
But the wheels of this boat are so close to the edge of the hull there are no side decks here. Our test boat had small plinths extending inboard of the gunwale to provide a perch of sorts, but it’s not suited to long periods of use, especially when heeled. The yard offers an optional folding seat, but that’s still not an ideal solution.
No helm seat, but a small plinth for the helmsman to perch at for short periods. Photo: Guillaume Plisson/Solaris Yachts
Solaris has clearly wagered that owners will put up with the lack of a seat, given a better experience for as long as they’re happy to stand at the helm. And the reality is that, once offshore when cruising a boat like this, the autopilot is likely to be steering.
In other words this boat offers owners the choice: enjoyable helming when it suits them, but with no imperative for a human driver to be glued to the wheel.
For my first sail we had 17 to 22 knots of true wind with a short cross sea. Close-hauled with full sail, the boat had a very responsive and positive feel to the helm. It was easy to get into a groove.
Solaris 50 a stable platform
With attentive steering the Solaris 50 was responsive enough to accurately steer over waves when close-hauled to prevent slamming in the awkward sea state and, despite the hull’s reasonably broad forward sections, we only had the occasional gentle bounce. Those wide hull sections create a huge amount of form stability that combines with the efficiency of a 2.8m draught bulb keel. The boat was able to comfortably carry full main and 97% self-tacking jib when close-hauled in these conditions.
Bearing away and unfurling the North Helix furling gennaker the solaris 50 was eager to start surfing, even with the apparent wind as far forward as 110°. In 17 knots of true breeze we averaged around nine knots of boat speed, with easy gentle surfs to 11 knots.
Sailing the Solaris for European Yacht of the Year trials. The cockpit sole aft from the winches extends to the side of the hull, giving a protected area with deep bulwarks. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud
The Helix gennaker is an impressively flexible sail. You can wind the halyard tight to use it as a Code 0 or ease it off to sail at deeper angles. At 135° apparent in 16 knots of true wind (158° TWA), we were still making 8.7 knots of boat speed. With its bigger sail area, a conventional A2 spinnaker would have clearly been quite a bit faster at deep angles, but would require a second sail to be carried for reaching.
When pressed really hard while reaching in more than 20 knots of true wind, at times loads started to build in the helm. However, the rudders retained grip until we gybed with full main in 22 knots and were slow to ease the mainsheet. Even then, it was a gentle spin out and easy to regain control.

Oyster 595 test: best selling Oyster ever

Beneteau First 53 review: This French cruiser backs up its bold first impressions
There is big talk and bold talk, but often it is no talk that speaks loudest when it comes to…
As with many performance cruisers of this size, the German mainsheet is taken down to a single point on the cockpit floor, rather than a traveller, and controlled via winches each side. This has potential to leave crewmembers handling the winches each side vulnerable to the sheet if it’s not controlled precisely in a gybe, or when reefing the mainsail.
On the test Solaris 50, an electric winch on each side means sheeting the sail is quick and requires little effort. When reefing, the risk can be mitigated with a short tack so reefing pennants are on the windward side and clear of the arc of the mainsheet.
Although not a planing design, the Solaris 50 offers easy speeds. Photo: Guillaume Plisson/Solaris Yachts
The boat is offered in both performance and cruising versions. Our test boat was the latter, with all controls led to a pair of winches ahead of each helm station. They’re somewhat inboard so you’re not out at the edge of the boat, which helps to give a feeling of security when you’re on the lee side, with the deep bulwark and waist high guardrails also contributing to the safety factor.
You can’t easily reach the mainsheet from the helm, but I don’t see that as being a problem on a boat of this size. If you’re alone on watch on deck, then you probably have the pilot steering in any case.
Solaris 50’s clean aesthetic
A recessed track for the self tacking jib and below deck electric headsail furler, plus flush hatches, concealed lines and an integrated teak capped sprayhood stowage combine to give a very clean deck layout. Other manufacturers of course strive for a similar outcome, but few manage the execution as well as with the Solaris 50.
There’s also an option for a larger, slightly overlapping jib with conventional coachroof-mounted genoa tracks. My experience in light airs on subsequent days suggests the larger sail isn’t necessary, providing you have a Code 0 or similar to increase sail area when off the wind.
Unhindered views forward. Photo: Photos: Guillaume Plisson/Solaris Yachts
Close-hauled in only 5-6 knots of true wind speed, for example, we made a fairly consistent 4 knots of boat speed, increasing to a shade over 5 when we bore away slightly. Bearing away still further and deploying the Helix gennaker we maintained a consistent 5 knots or more of boat speed at apparent wind angles of around 60° and the true wind aft of the beam.
A neat aspect is that the wheels are connected via a chain and twin gearboxes, so if a problem is encountered with the system on one side of the boat that wheel can be isolated and the other used to control both rudders. Outboard of the winch stations two very easy steps lead up to the side decks. It’s also easy to step across the cockpit seats and onto the side deck.
Deck stowage includes a longitudinal tender garage with space for a 2.5m RIB. The large sail locker forward can be fitted out as a crew cabin and there’s a large dedicated chain locker right forward that also gives access to the below deck furler.
Liferaft stowage is at the forward end of the cockpit under the sole. In addition, there’s a small under-seat cockpit locker to starboard and two lockers each side of the tender garage, with space for fenders and lines, plus access to the rudder stocks.
Wide aft beam helps create a transom tender garage for a 2.5m RIB. Photo: Photos: Guillaume Plisson/Solaris Yachts
At the front of the cockpit there’s a big seating area in which our test boat has substantial folding tables each side. These break up the space giving a feeling of security and plenty of opportunity to brace your legs when the boat is well heeled. The cockpit also allows plenty of space for people circulation, even with the two tables in place.
Cruiser-racing
This is definitely a Mediterranean-oriented design, but with space and stowage to venture further afield. The boat has potential to easily eat up miles on a longer passage, although tankage is on the small side for longer periods of autonomy. On the other hand, even with the cruising deck layout, there’s scope for occasional racing.
For example, weeks after taking delivery the owner of our test boat, Paulo Oligeri (who previously had the earlier Solaris 50 and then a 58), competed in the Solaris Cup, taking 7th place in the event, which featured 70 entries from 40-80ft.
Of course, Solaris isn’t alone in organising events for owners, but it’s an important extra layer to the experience of owning a particular boat and is often a highlight in an owner’s calendar. Oligeri says his new vessel is as comfortable to live on as his previous Solaris 58 and is a lot easier to handle. In addition to the sailing qualities it confers, he also praises the wide hull shape, which means the boat resists rolling when at anchor.
This was particularly appreciated while cruising Sardinia’s rugged west coast in the summer of 2022. He says it’s “never busy, even in July and August, when there are some spots with no other boats, but it’s a windy area and the anchorages have less protection.” Despite only taking delivery a few months before I sailed the boat, he had already sailed more than 2,000 miles, yet everything still appeared new.

Solaris 50 customisation
The interior style of the test boat elicited a variety of responses at the European Yacht of the Year trials. Some jury members loved the light limed oak effect, while others were less keen. However, more than anything, this is an example of the level of customisation offered by Solaris. The company builds only 30-50 sailing yachts per year, which gives scope to incorporate owners’ individual requests.
The test boat has a three cabin/two heads arrangement, though there’s also a three cabin/three head option which has a linear galley along the starboard side of the saloon.
The main saloon is bright and airy with a pair of hull windows each side, two opening overhead hatches and a useful opening port above the cooker. There’s a supremely comfortable deeply upholstered settee to starboard, which is parallel to the boat’s centreline so will also make a good sea berth. To port is a larger U-shaped seating area around the dining table, which can seat up to eight.
Forward cabin offers enough space and stowage to be able to spend extended periods on board. Photo: Guillaume Plisson/Solaris Yachts
The L-shape galley of the layout with two heads is to port at the base of the companionway. This has excellent worktop space with deep fiddles, a central sink area close to the centreline, plus two fridges or a fridge and separate freezer. There’s decent stowage for items that need to be accessed quickly, and room elsewhere to stow longer term provisions if necessary. There’s also a proper forward-facing workstation to starboard.
For many owners the best part of the accommodation is found in the forward cabin. This is impressively large, with plenty of floor space, four full height lockers and more easily accessed stowage under the peninsula bed, the foot of which lifts on gas struts. Natural light comes from two big hull windows, plus two overhead hatches that are hinged aft to give good airflow over the bed when at anchor. There’s also a large heads compartment with a separate shower stall.
Deeply upholstered settee, plus nav station, on the starboard side of the saloon. Photo: Guillaume Plisson/Solaris Yachts
The port aft cabin can be set up as a double or as a twin. There’s a lot of easily accessed stowage here, plus further useful volumes under the outboard bunk. The starboard aft cabin is arranged as a conventional double. It’s broadly a similar size, although there’s less stowage.
To maximise accommodation space, systems are distributed around the boat rather than being concentrated in one place. The optional diesel generator, for instance, is in the 50cm wide tunnel between the aft cabins. Access is okay for routine maintenance, but would be more difficult for major operations such as overhauling the cylinder head. The optional watermaker is at the other end of the boat, under the head of the berth in the owner’s cabin, which is also where the optional aircon compressor is located.
The standard engine is a 50hp Volvo Penta unit, with a 75hp model offered as an option. Fuel tanks total 370lt, which will put a limit on autonomy, especially if generator use is extensive. Construction is of Airex sandwich and vinylester, with vacuum bagging used for gluing the core. Otherwise lamination is done by hand, which results in a heavier boat than if a full vacuum process is used.

The longer I spent on board the Solaris 50 the more it appealed to me. The accommodation works well, especially the big owner’s cabin, with its huge amount of easily accessed stowage. This has to be a big plus for anyone who hopes to spend extended periods on board. Solaris has also done a good job with the clean deck styling and the general ease of handling this boat offers. Despite its size and displacement, this is still a boat that’s fun and rewarding to sail. The idea of the outboard position for the helm locations sounds great and I appreciated being able to see most of the jib luff when steering, but for me comfort, space, ease of handling and performance are stronger reasons to buy this boat, especially for those who plan to mostly sail in warm parts of the world. That Solaris has sold 35 boats in less than a year since it was announced is testament to the appeal of this model.

Sleeker, lighter, with more sail area, and more space in the bow than its predecessor for the owner’s cabin, the Oceanis 34.1 promises unforgettable days out on the water. THE OCEANIS 34.1 IN SAILING MODE

Exterior design
The deck layout has been redesigned to ensure maximum comfort and safety when moving around the boat, taking the helm and for onboard living when at anchor. The ropes for the halyard and the furling system are forward of the cockpit while there is a winch on each side for the helmsman to set the foresails. The result is an uncluttered cockpit ideal for relaxation, with easy access to the aft swim platform.
Interior Design
The Nauta designers have created a chic, contemporary interior, in an elegant walnut or light oak finish. The deck hatches and multiple hull and roof portholes bring natural light into the boat and provide an excellent means of ventilation. In the saloon, the cleverly designed chart table with its folding top provides for two extra single berths. A distinctive style, instantly recognisable even in the smallest details with layouts that prioritise comfort, user-friendliness, bright and airy interiors and ease of movement.
WHERE DESIGN MEETS DELIGHT
Life on board with family or friends new to sailing is the very essence of all new Oceanis designs. The Oceanis 34.1 is the perfect example of this approach, promising to provide safe cruising experiences aboard a boat that is easy to handle whoever is crewing it.
CUSTOM FITTINGS AND ONBOARD COMFORT
Inside, the boat has two or three double cabins and a head compartment. Whichever version is chosen, the boat interiors are bright and airy. The boat has four deck hatches, four hull portholes and long windows in the coamings so you can live the cruising experience to the full from the Oceanis saloon.
A SPACIOUS, CONTEMPORARY STYLE COCKPIT
The uncluttered layout and roof-top position of the mainsheet provides a spacious cockpit that is ideal for relaxation whether under sail or at anchor. A stylish swim platform provides easy access to the sea.
A HIGH-PERFORMANCE BOAT
Marc Lombard’s team has taken the design of the new-generation hulls one step further, adding extra width to a third of the bow for better close-hauled pitch control and a more stable helm when heeling. Less underwater area improves the boat’s performance and ensures pleasurable sailing in lightwind and medium conditions.
A connected boat
The mobile application, Seanapps , and its onboard unit lets you view the status of the boat's various systems (battery charge, fuel or water tank levels, maintenance scheduling) via your smartphone, as well as planning your route or reviewing your sailing status using your mobile phone.
