WHAT KIND of EXPERIENCE  YOU are LOOKING for?

While researching sailing operators - keep always in mind - that in order to make BEST decision - the price tag shall not be your main indicator - as the saying says -  “you get what you paid for” in the end . 

Make sure you are not fooled with PERFECT catalogue pictures and shiny marketing materials - as they may be further from reality than you could imagine.  Ask for real images ;-)

Don’t be fooled that advertising the NEWEST boat (was it the newest when the website was made, when ? ) is  therefore BEST - as the age of the sailing vessel and your charter  experience, has nothing to do with you final satisfaction. 

You can have the best time of your life on a classic boat from 1940s - as long as the vessel is taken care of and CLEAN - by devoted and passionate owner. 

Some classic yachts  are like WINE especially if cared by a devoted owner  - and offer luxury experience on a comfortable   ELEGANT classy  vessel. Quality of most stadarized new “modern” vessels is far below the vessels that were made before 90s (in most cases - excluding of course world famous million dollar + yachts e.g. Oester etc). Why ? Cost effectiveness ….to cater to  middle class. And most owners know it - therefore they keep good boats - see % of value depreciation of new “modern” vessels to well known classics from 90s :-) - there is a reason why they keep the value and don’t loose 50% in first 5 yrs :)

Before,  the yachts of 40 feet plus were built with quality for the people who could afford it - and expecting highest quality - without cutting corners. Today casual market tempts with lower prices - compromising quality tremendously.

However in any service, and especially charter  - the most important factor is a   HUMAN factor  - as in the end you will remember  WHO you sailed with  . 

Was the captain/crew professional? courteous? entertaining? or your skipper was a “ driver" that wanted to have it done asap …and you had nothing to talk about …. Is he “young” and strong enough to fully perform and open sails ( yes - it is very much physically demanding job and need full attention) … . Did he open sails or was under motor only for his convenience ?

Miami has it all - just make your research and be careful with “product - placement’ articles, literally advertising one particular boat / location for the convenience of the author = that boat owner :-)

Please do not be fooled by ads of free professional photography is included - as of what we know - nobody will offer you truly professional services for free ( if they are really good) as such services require 2 assistants to hold reflectors and modifiers (screens) to create/control light, more sophisitcated equipment ( not just DSLR/s NIKON or CANON that almost every body has nowadays) That does not make you a professional …. There is much more to that. We love photography but we don’t call ourselves pros just because we have a DSLR Nikon or Canon (nowadays everybody calls themselves pro :-)

For truly professional services - you may hire photographer and invite him aboard. Research well, as most “prof” in Miami may be a person with DSLR and silly skills behind 

Good Photography is an ART for which you need a good eye and tech skills (science) as well.

Timing - Most sailors know that even a full day is not enough to enjoy true sailing trip - but due to time - half day ( 4 hrs ) is our most popular charter .

We don’t recommend anything shorter than 4 hrs - as honestly 2 h ride ( offered by many older retired captains) means  leaving marina - motor and back in slip. 

Each marina (in Miami) = no exceptions , have access channel that can be 10-20 -30 min long - before you can open sail, based on wind direction of course  - so calculating entry and docking part - you know your answer what 2 hrs on sailboat is a ride from any location.

For some captains - due to their age - it is more convenient - as it is the easiest trip and does not even require opening sails …. just motoring … and for them least effort and most money earned by doing 2-4 a day short riders under motor.

For sure this is not BEST value you were hoping for ...

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Johnson shared the character’s flowing locks, his sockless, casual-cool vibes and his adventurous lifestyle, racing powerboats offshore, counting sunsets with Jimmy Buffet and falling in and out of love with a string of models and actresses.

They were men’s men in a time when that implied a swaggering, take-life-by-the-throat bravado that few were questioning.

Except maybe Johnson. “I saw Sonny Crockett as the undoing of the American male,” he says on a video call from his home office, dressed in a white “LA” ball cap and a grey hoodie. “The law-and-order part of Sonny’s job was overwhelming, impossible to keep up with, and it’s kind of debilitating when you can’t make a difference. By the end of the fifth year, the character was so dark, and it was affecting my soul.”  

This is relevant because in a life and career defined by water and boats, Johnson is back at the helm, playing the role of Robert Massey, the captain of a luxury cruise ship on Doctor Odyssey . The show features a string of guest stars who come aboard for episodic tales. That may sound familiar, but it’s definitely not The Love Boat . “It’s more like The White Lotus on a ship,” Johnson says. “It’s about what happens when people lose control. [Writer/producer] Ryan Murphy is a genius at figuring out what people want to see.”

“I think the interesting question in all this is, would there be there a place for that guy in this world?”

That’s a question he might never have asked himself if he hadn’t become a world-famous actor and ’80s sex symbol, albeit through an unlikely route.

On the third day of his senior year in high school, Johnson arrived at business class vowing to keep his eyes open. He’d dozed off the first two days, and his teacher—“she had a voice like Thorazine”—threatened ejection.

Johnson needed the class to graduate, but “my butt barely hit the seat, and I was sawing logs,” he says, his familiar smile wrapped by a whitening goatee. He got tossed, and the only other class available was a speech and drama section. “And I couldn’t just sign up,” he says. “I had to audition.”

That didn’t sit quite right. Johnson had grown up bouncing between Kansas and Missouri, which resulted in a “thick hillbilly accent,” a devotion to sports, and extensive time in the outdoors “with my dad and my uncles and my grandfather hunting and fishing,” he says.

Acting didn’t resonate among those social circles. But lacking options, he showed up at the audition, and the teacher, Dr. Sharon Pyle, not only admitted him to the class, she immediately cast him as Tony in “West Side Story.” Suddenly, he was not just acting, but singing and dancing, too.

“She saw something in me I didn’t even see in myself,” he says. “She started throwing all this wild stuff at me—Shakespeare, Ben Johnson, Sartre, Tennessee Williams, and others. Not the rest of the class, just me and this one girl.” She also gave him daily diction worksheets that unbent his accent.

What followed was a decade-and-a-half of small theater productions and bit parts in movies and TV shows, until, in 1984, he landed Miami Vice . The show grew so big so fast that Johnson soon needed round-the-clock security. “When we were on location, it was not uncommon for us to walk out of our trailers and find police tape holding back a crowd of 10,000 people,” he says. “I couldn’t really go out or do anything.”

He escaped by water.

“I did all the boat work on the show, right from the start,” he says. “I even did the stunts, but not the crashes, because only the bad guys crashed.” He smiles. “I just had a feel for it. Any time I get on a boat on the water, it’s like, Oh, I got this .”

The show maintained several versions of its signature Scarab and “the producers made the horrible mistake of giving me one of those boats to use on my own,” he says. “I spent a lot of my time offscreen doing that.”

The craft’s 330 horsepower MerCruiser sterndrives pushed it to 70 mph, a taste of speed that left Johnson searching for more. In 1986, he drove a brand-new 43-foot Scarab in an 1,100-mile race up the Mississippi river that he won. He later worked with Wellcraft to design a “Don Johnson signature edition” of that boat.

By 1988, he turned his attention to offshore racing, taking the wheel on a 46-foot Scarab with three turbocharged engines and surface-piercing drives. After an up-and-down season, Johnson’s boat finished strong to take the APBA World Championship in the superboat category and he was named Top Driver.

At the end of the season, he teamed with Revenge boats and designed and oversaw the production of a 50-foot catamaran called Team USA. “It had four big-block Chevy truck engines bored and stroked into race engines that produced 1,100 foot-pounds of torque each, which is insane.”

The boat had four eight-inch exhausts above the waterline and was so loud that, he says, “the first time I turned it over, it broke every window in the shops along the water in Key West.” Its first speed test flirted with 150 mph. “We hit 149-point something on the open ocean,” he says. “At that point it’s basically an aircraft. You’re just touching down from time to time and holding on for dear life.”

With Johnson flying back and forth between shooting locations and race sites, Team USA performed well but he failed to repeat as champ, even as he burnished his rep as fearless and aggressive. “I was fearless because I was good,” Johnson says. “Boat racing required serendipity and amnesia, because you had to block everything out and focus on the task at hand and hope nothing went wrong.”

Nothing did, but as the ’80s ended, so did the world in which Sonny Crockett and, to some extent, Don Johnson held a central role. Miami Vice was cancelled in 1991. Johnson stopped racing that year, too.

Johnson’s relationship with the water survived though. “I became good friends with Jimmy Buffett,” he says. “And one of the reasons was that I liked the water and Jimmy liked the water. We loved to be on it fishing, loved to be on it floating, even loved to be on it just sitting.”

He brings up his boys while returning to the question of what a latter-day Crockett would look like today. “There’s a place for that guy—but modified ,” he says. “My sons hunt and fish and ride motorcycles, they have the adventure bug, but they’re not wild and crazy like I was. They do it in disciplined ways and they have fun. The big difference is the opportunity for growth and maturity we’ve been offered to accept from women. I have an abiding respect for women. They’ve taught me to be less toxic and more mindful.”

After telling the story of Key West’s broken windows, Johnson leaned toward the screen. “Of course, these things tend to get embellished over time,” he said. “I’m guessing just one window cracked.” He laughs a laugh that suggests it very well could have been none. The anecdote contains the echoes of a very different time and place, but it’s better this way—it’s entertaining but more honest, more real. Modified.

Wine, chocolate and more: Uniworld launches first-ever women-only river cruise in France

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises will launch its inaugural women-only sailing through southern France next year, complete with truffles, chocolate and wine.

Mainly catering toward older children and adults , the luxury river cruise brand announced its 2025 lineup on this week, including the new offering, called the "Women-Only Cruise." Sailing through Burgundy and Provence for eight days, the cruise itinerary was designed by "a passionate team of women" staff, according to the Uniworld website. There is currently only one departure scheduled for Aug. 25, 2025, with prices starting at $4,999 per person.

"Travelers have demonstrated an increasing desire for more specialised and unique experiences, inspiring us to develop a wide range of new themed cruises for 2025," President and CEO of Uniworld Ellen Bettridge said in the news release.

Travelers on the eight-day adventure will set sail from Arles, cruising along the Rhône and Saône rivers. Along the way, they'll dive into the region's food scene and explore charming villages that inspired artists like Van Gogh, Cézanne and Gauguin. Other activities include truffle-hunting, bike rides, lavender weaving and burlesque sessions. The journey wraps up in the vibrant city of Lyon.

"Bring your mothers, sisters, adult daughters, best friends or any special women in your life, or embark on a solo adventure where you’re destined to make new friends during a week of exploration, connection, immersion, relaxation and laughter," the website states.

The other new cruise offering for 2025 is a music-themed cruise called "Music of the Danube," featuring a yodeling workshop and a "Sound of Music" Tour in Salzburg. There is also going to be a new all-inclusive Premium Golf Package add-on to the "Brilliant Bordeaux" itinerary, featuring 18-hole rounds at Cabot Bordeaux and St. Emilion, as well as a shared caddy service and gourmet dining.

"From our first-ever cruise exclusively for women to luxurious, all-inclusive golf packages, we are expanding our portfolio to further cater to a range of interests, passions and communities, all while remaining deeply committed to delivering unforgettable experiences that exceed our guests’ expectations," said Bettridge.

Specialty cruises that are returning next year span from the "Generations Collection" for families with children, "Jewish Heritage Sailings" and "Out on the Rivers" for the LGBTQ+ community.
