Have It All: The Riviera 68 SMY

  • By Kevin Koenig
  • Updated: October 2, 2017

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

“Regrets, I’ve had a few.”

I couldn’t help but think of Frank Sinatra’s famous lyric while aboard the Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht this past summer (Australia’s winter) in Sydney Harbour and offshore in the Tasman Sea. You see, earlier in the year I’d had to pass on an invitation to help deliver the yacht from the Riviera factory some 380 nautical miles north on the Gold Coast to the 50th annual Sydney International Boat Show. As I wheeled and toured the boat during my one-day sea trial instead, I kept thinking, Man, that would have been sweet.

There’s a lot to like about the 68 SMY, but the thing that really drew me in was the after section’s layout. The 68 is a true hybrid boat, designed as much for elegant cruising as for offshore adventure. Her cockpit is an open, nearly Spartan space with enough room for dive tanks, Hawaiian slings, or even an optional fighting chair if game fishing is in the plans. A two-burner Kenyon “barbie” forward can handle all the shrimp you throw on it, and has a sink and freezer beside it. The space has a boys’ club feel — though the boat won’t leave anyone else wanting.

“We polled our owners and found that many of the men wanted a space for sports,” says Stephen Milne, Riviera’s director of brand and communications. “He might be a fisher, he might be a diver, and he can do that with this boat. But we found the ladies really wanted that mezzanine seating.”

Ah yes, the mezzanine. With a hardtop to shade it from the oft-harsh Australian sun, the deck has a dining settee that seats four at an aft bench seat, and another four on stowable chairs. A bar forward of that area connects to the salon’s aft galley via an upward-opening window that joins the main deck’s indoor and outdoor spaces. A flip-down TV in the hardtop is viewable from every seat in the space, so all at once you can sip your cocktail, watch your movie, enjoy the sea breezes and remind the chef either at the cockpit grill or in the galley not to put too much garlic on the grouper again, please.

That typically Australian aft galley setup also hints at this boat’s ability to go for the seriously long voyages that Down Under yachtsmen in this part of the world need to make to leave their island continent. There are four (count ’em) Isotherm refrigerators as well as two freezers for food stowage. Airplane catches on the drawers and cabinets ensure that nothing goes flying in a rough seaway. Perhaps not surprisingly, on our test boat, it seemed like every one of those drawers and cabinets housed lowball and wineglasses — it’s almost as if the Aussies have a reputation for enjoying a party or something.

Star Light, Star Bright

Other features that make the 68 game for rough seas include handholds throughout the engine room. They make it easier to check on the standard twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels that were aboard our test yacht (more powerful 1,800 or 1,900 hp MAN V-12s are options). Access to service points including the twin Cummins generators (rated at 27.5 kW and 13.5 kW) forward and to starboard is good, though a tight point forward and to port might be hard to reach. Cognizant of this, Riviera built a flip-up door into the crew quarters forward of the engine room for reaching the hydraulics systems and ball valves housed in that corner.

Riviera 68 SMY

Another feature that speaks to the 68’s seaworthiness is the 17-inch bulwark design along the side decks. Those bulwarks support beefy, 37-inch-high handrails that should give crew confidence when docking or moving forward in a seaway. The side decks lead to a bow deck with a recessed area forward for security when handling the anchor and its stainless-steel Muir windlass, as well as enough space for a 16-foot tender. Three plush bench seats can accommodate 11 people, ensuring the deck is not strictly utilitarian and can serve as an entertaining area.

Riviera 68 SMY

Once at sea, the Frank Mulder-designed yacht put on a tour de force. Her hull, which is hand-laid using vinylester resin, is solid below the waterline for strength and foam-cored above for weight savings. Carbon fiber is used in load-bearing spots such as where the swim platform bolts onto the transom. This all makes for a solid, exceptionally quiet ride. We splashed happily through the rolling 4-footers at 25 knots. When I dropped the hammer and put her full-steam ahead, the boat shot up to a zesty 30.5 knots, though her stability belied her speed, like a luxury sedan zipping down a highway. At 9 knots, the 68 (which has a fuel capacity of 1,849 gallons) has a cruising range of 2,000 nautical miles — enough to voyage from Sydney to Fiji (or Miami to Nova Scotia) — which is a pretty good poke without having to hit the fuel dock.

Riviera 68 SMY

After the sea trial, we took the yacht to her slip at the Sydney International Boat Show. At slow speeds, Riviera’s company captain used the standard bow thruster and optional stern thruster to slither the yacht like an eel through the labyrinth of docks and lines. A control station aft and to port on the flybridge, with a Garmin screen, Twin Disc QuickShift controls and a joystick, was supremely handy, as was the complementary joystick to starboard.

Riviera 68 SMY

After the lines were set, I hopped onto the dock and soaked in the 68’s burly lines. A sense of contentment washed over me; it was a day to remember. I got to crawl all over a beautiful boat, check out the rugged Australian coastline and do something I’d never done before — bring a boat into a show.

So, yeah, maybe I did have a regret or two, but just like Ol’ Blue Eyes said, they were too few to mention.

Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht

Current model.

Riviera 68

It seems everyone is obsessed these days with looking and feeling younger – and now there’s an easy way to achieve this without resorting to Botox, liposuction, tummy tucks, yoga retreats and gluten-free pizza bases consisting of coagulated cauliflower.

It’s called the Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht.

Yes, it will set you back $AUD3,898,000 for the base model, but spend any amount of time aboard and your factory settings for youthfulness are instantly restored, with pent-up stress melting into the wake. I defy anyone not to see palm trees in their near future.

So fresh, and refreshing, is the design that it transports you back to that moment you first stepped aboard a boat, felt the sluice of foam beneath the chines, and fell in love. It’s as though some male and female moulds came together, over a glass of resin and Barry White music, to produce a lovechild melding the refined luxury of a European motor yacht with the edgy athleticism of a US-style sports fishing convertible.

In conceiving the blueprints, Riviera engaged with seasoned owners from around the world, building not only a picture of their perfect cruiser but a full-scale mock-up in the factory. Hull 1 was about as perfect as it could be, allowing production to proceed apace.

Boat #2 followed close behind, bound for Cannes Boat Show then its Spanish owners, and the next two are well advanced. At the time of writing, 12 orders had been secured.

Interestingly, a plethora of motor yacht attributes were borne out by the consultation process, like a pantograph side door, walk-around decks with moulded bulwarks, and a foredeck that transforms into an entertaining space. Ladies, particularly, wanted elements such as mezzanine dining, a central galley and, of course, full-beam master stateroom.

30 Knots Plus

Men, being blokes, opted for the ability to run at 30+ knots plus a cockpit geared to fish the canyons. At the same time, the 68 can traverse the Tasman and venture onwards to the Pacific Isles with complete safety and comfort. Twin wing tanks of 3500 litres aside, plus an optional long-range tank of 1500 litres, afford a cruising range of 1975 nautical miles at 9 knots.

A conventional enclosed flybridge can do this too, of course, but against any measure, the SMY layout simply offers onboard living on a superior scale.

As it happens, the 68 was conceived in tandem with a 72. The mould is blocked, sacrificing a few square metres of cockpit and mezzanine space, however, the two models are identical from the engine room bulkhead forward. The price difference is around $600,000, some of which can be attributed to larger standard motors.

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

It’s immediately apparent how high, and dry, the 68’s hull sits above the water. Bridge clearance is 6.4 m – 2½ storeys – so headroom throughout, even in the full-height engine room is exceptional. Further, the beam of 6 m is carried well aft and the motors are set further back than usual thanks to a vee-drive installation.

To port are dual stairwells, one leading down from the cockpit mezzanine past CZone fusing and a washer-dryer unit, the other rising from the saloon to the enclosed bridge.

Heading below, firstly, there’s a day head with shower. The adjacent crew cab has a single berth, beneath which are a stainless-steel workbench and the ship’s toolkit. Owner drivers may opt to use this space for game fishing, water sports or dive gear.

From here, through a full-sized and sealed door, you enter the heart of the beast – alternatively, engineers can use a hatch concealed in the cockpit wet bar. With so much height and width available, there’s more than ample servicing accessibility.

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

Twin generators were installed on the test boat for redundancy, producing 27.5 and 13 KVA respectively, and there’s a battery of air-con units. Speaking of which, lithium batteries are installed as standard.

The Riviera 68 is the first Riv to be built to CE Category A, the world’s most exacting construction code. As an example, a separate emergency battery is placed in the flybridge for the communications equipment. In terms of engineering execution, and sensible seamanship, this is up there with the world’s absolute best.

The MAN V12 1550hp diesels are a sight to behold in their gleaming all-white surrounds, connecting seamlessly to vee-drives via Sea Torque’s oil-filled, self-contained shaft assembly. Exhausts lead to a wedged section at the transom, expelling their fumes and noise underwater. The temperature-sensitive variable-speed engine room fans are equally quiet.

Back on deck, the mezzanine offers covered seating and eating for 10 people. Twin drop-leaf tables create one long bench, fed by the nearby cockpit barbecue and aft-placed galley. There’s a bar table and stools facing the Hopper window, allowing the hosts to converse and commune with both the outdoor and saloon lounge areas.

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

From a catering perspective, the port-side pantograph door gives quick access to guests at the bow. Here, the ingeniously-configured foredeck creates both a haven for a 4-metre tender and a socialising hub. Lift the dinghy away, via a davit, and the space transforms to a lounge nook with more cushions, folding parts and stowage than an IKEA store.

Accommodation Options

Headroom in the VIP stateroom below is not compromised in any way. It has a walk-around queen-size bed, en-suite and hanging locker, while topside windows and an overhead hatch draw in abundant light.

Classic and Grand Presidential options are offered for the master suite. The Classic, as demonstrated, has a master stateroom amidships with en-suite to starboard – there’s a king-size bed, stylish headboard and bedside tables. You also get an additional fourth guest cabin, with Pullman-style bunks, to starboard.

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

The Presidential suite places the en-suite in the starboard forequarter and a private sitting area with breakfast table, while the port guest cabin features twin single beds that can form a double as the inboard bed slides across at the touch of a button.

Finish is equal to the best that Britain can offer. While it’s hard not to love the glossy walnut finish and muted cream overtones on the test vessel, cherrywood and wenge are optional timbers … as is a satin varnish. For the inset mood lighting, there’s a rainbow of colour options, though warm white would do just fine.

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

In the Clouds

The flybridge is almost literally in the clouds, providing a commanding view from the twin helm seats. It has a leather sofa to starboard with a pull-out mattress that creates another huge double berth, bringing sleeping capacity to 10. You get a further flat screen TV up here, facing the lounge.

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

Skippers have three 22-inch Garmin screens spread before them on the dash, along with a centreline helm position. Complementing this is an external docking station, to port, on the flybridge overhang and an additional EJS (Express Joystick System) control to starboard.

Upon starting the MANs, you begin to fully appreciate how sophisticated the drive system is. At idle it’s totally free of vibration and scarcely audible from the bridge while running speeds produce just 60db – akin to normal conversation levels.

For all the power at the disposal of its Veem five-axis props, the 68 is also remarkably delicate in close-quarters manoeuvring. With the joystick linking to hydraulic thrusters, you can progressively control 47 tonnes of boat with the tiniest tweak and twist of your fingers.

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

Thenceforth the real symphony begins, with the Twin Disc transmissions working beautifully in concert with the twin turbo V12s to deliver super smooth acceleration. Vee drives bring added complexity in some buyers’ minds, but this is state-of-the-art technology that’s been thoroughly proven on superyachts.

Shaft angle is 8-degrees, with the props residing in hull tunnels. It allows the hull to have an optimum running angle of just 4.2 degrees, which can be monitored through the trim tab display.

To sculpt the running surfaces, Riviera renewed its acquaintance with Dutchman Frank Mulder. Tank testing was undertaken in England, resulting in a hull that is sumptuously soft, efficient and dry underway. Spray peels away from the fine entry and there’s no appreciable bow lift during the transition to plane, which kicks in around 1600 rpm for 17 knots.

riviera 68 sports motor yacht review

The sweet spot is around 1850 revs, achieving 22 knots for a total fuel burn of 345 litres/hr. Wide open at 2360 rpm, we saw 31 knots at 600 litres an hour. In a 1.5-metre side-swell and windswept chop, we closed the flybridge and turned up the air-conditioning. It felt and sounded more like 10 knots.

The electronic steering is sporty and precise, needing just a couple of turns from lock-to-lock. The hull responds like a thoroughbred under rein, and form stability is excellent regardless of speed. The owner, Andrew, felt comfortable in dispensing with the option of a gyro that had initially been spec-ed.

Owner Upgrade

Andrew, incidentally, has upgraded from a three-year-old Riviera 63, which he and his wife Jenny found a little compact for their tribe of six kids and nine grandkids. They say the 68 feels twice as big as the 63.

Ask Jenny what she likes most about the new boat and she replies with a smile, “Everything … but especially the captain”.

She is not alone in finding the 68 faultless. During its launch at Sydney International Boat Show, admirers stepped off saying it’s unquestionably the best Riviera ever built, which is some feat after 5200 boats over 37 years.

Essentially, the 68 and 72 are the culmination of a highly seasoned in-house design team working exhaustively with arguably the best superyacht architect in the world and a discerning customer base.

Significantly, they’ve stolen buyers from the motor yacht ranks. It’s a conquest boat for Riv in that category, and most likely the start of another new collection residing between the Flybridge and Sport Yacht ranges.

To be honest, I loved it.

Incredible new Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht on show

The best riviera ever made, the new 68 sports motor yacht, heads a nine-strong fleet at the 50th sydney international boat show.

Having driven the new 68 Sports Motor Yacht to 31. 6 knots off the Gold Coast just days before its coastal delivery to Sydney, we can attest that this is an incredible luxury cruiser.

We will go so far as to say this is the best production flybridge motor yacht we've experienced from an Australia yard and certainly the most sophisticated Riviera ever.

The low engine noise and lack of vibration — thanks to the big 1550hp MAN V12 engines coupled to special Seatorque shafts with V drives — sets the bar for motorcruising comfort.

The hull from superyacht specialist Frank Mulder is just beautiful, carving a path like a scythe and in perfect balance.

With a 2000nm+ range at displacement speeds, and a 520-570nm+ range at 17-22 knots cruise, the 68 Sports Motor Yacht — and its 72ft sister ship with extended cockpit — are destined for some serious passages, voyages and sea miles.

Designed to CE Category A certification, the new Sports Motor Yachts  have near-autonomous offshore cruising ability. Think the Australian coastline, but also the South Pacific and Oceania, plus export markets. Already 10 of these boats averaging around $5m have been sold.

But it's the overall depth of design that is  special, with two years' of input from would-be owners and top designers to get these boat just right before production began.

Every 'station' you visit from the foredeck seating to the large cockpit that can swing a game chair, from to the mezzanine level entertaining area to the aft galley, and the accommodation down below plus flying bridge three floors up, has something special about it. The result is a whole new class of Sports Motor Yacht.

SYDNEY BOAT SHOW DEBUT Riviera will host the World Premiere of its amazing new 68 Sports Motor Yacht at the 50th Sydney International Boat Show opening Thursday August 3-9 at Darling Harbour.

The beautiful new 68-footer, with a purposeful styling that matches the boat's long-range intent, is one of nine Riviera's that will be displayed at the 2018 Sydney boat show.

The vision for the Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht came about as a close collaboration of existing customers and the Gold Coast yard’s senior design team.

"The owners we spoke with were seeking a true blue-water boat that combines long-range performance with a good turn of speed when it's needed, with the ability to fish, dive, or provide the perfect platform to completely relax with family and friends," Riviera owner and Chairman Rodney Longhurst said.

USER-FRIENDLY DESIGN Moving around the big boat is safe and easy courtesy of generous side decks and high bulwarks that reach to the foredeck, which itself has many features and options never seen before on a Riviera.

The foredeck can include a large tender and 550kg hydraulic davit. When the tender is launched, this area quickly transforms to an eight-seater sunken seating centre that can be shaded by a fold-away bimini.

There is also a pantograph side door from the saloon direct to the side decks, another first for Riviera, but in keeping with the passagemaker and long-range cruising roles that the 68 and 72 will likely fulfill.

The large cockpit caters for sportsfishers, watersports enthusiasts and keen entertainers, while the elevated al fresco mezzanine has a sprawling dining area before boat’s central U-shape gourmet galley, which connects back outdoors through a large awning window.

A separate port side door from this mezzanine leads to a staircase and the dayhead and shower below decks. There is also a nearby utility room or comfortable crew cabin with direct access to the engine room.

FIVE-STAR SALOON The saloon features a plush lounge to port and a dining area that can seat up to eight people to starboard. While the 68 and 72 have familiar Riviera styling, the luxury fabrics, natural timbers and leatherette panelling elevate these Sports Motor Yachts to their own class. Of course, soft furnishing options are virtually boundless.

A large TV forward of the galley rises at the touch of a button and is comfortably viewable from both lounge and dining areas.

An internal timber staircase provides direct access to the flybridge, which rates as a social cruising deck. The wide helm station is designed for up to four 22in navigation screens. The beautiful helm seats are from Norsap and fully adjustable for cruising comfort at sea.

Guests can relax on lounges along the entire starboard side facing an entertainment unit, while a fold-out double bed the offers skipper and further guests impromptu accommodation.

GENEROUS ACCOMMODATION The main lower accommodation deck offers two stateroom options: the four-cabin Classic or the three-cabin Grand Presidential design with full-beam master stateroom.

The 68 Sports Motor Yacht at Sydney boat show has been built to include the Classic accommodation layout, with a midships master stateroom with en suite bathroom along the starboard side. With the bathroom doors open, you still derive a full-beam stateroom effect. The VIP guest stateroom forward includes a walk-around queen-size bed and a private en suite.

A third cabin aft of the guest stateroom on the port side features twin single beds that can convert to a double, while a fourth guest cabin on the starboard side has two full-size pullman-style beds. These two cabins share the boat’s third communal bathroom.

ENGINES AND TECH In the standing-height engine room, twin 1550hp V12 MAN are coupled to V-drive Seatorque shafts. A pair of 1800 MANs is optional. The boat has aft docking stations with Twin Disc hydraulic thrusters with station-hold among its systems.

The 1550hp MAN engines with V-drives and Seatorque shafts gave 31.6 knots top speed during our test (smack in the middle of the forecast 30-32 knots), with hitherto new levels of smoothness.

The low sounds levels — just mid-60dba in the bridge at cruise — and lack of vibration creates a truly first-class experience.

The Riviera Sports Motor Yachts is a showcase of new technology that includes next generation CZone digital switching that interfaces with an iPad and offers remote diagnostics and dial-in for servicing crews.

SYDNEY BOAT SHOW DISPLAY Company owner Rodney Longhurst was thrilled with the development of this new collection of Sports Motor Yachts that will showcase Riviera’s world-class design and the skills at the 50th Sydney International Boat Show.

The big Riv' display also included the Riviera 6000, 5400 and 4800 Sport Yachts, the practical 525 and 445 SUV models, the offshore 52 Enclosed Flybridge model and 43 Open Flybridge.

The Belize display will include a detailed presentation of the marque's latest classically-styled motor yacht, the Belize 66, which has recently been announced. The display will also showcase the 54 Daybridge model.

We've also been tipped off that there will be breaking news of a new Riviera duo in the sub-40ft class designed to get new blood to the fold.

Stand-by for more on the Riviera 68 and 72 Sports Motor Yacht in our impending test report from the first test drive during the chopper shoot off the Gold Coast!
