Confronté au repli de ses ventes, Nike change de patron
Le groupe américain de vêtements et d'équipements sportifs Nike a annoncé jeudi le départ de son PDG John Donahoe, qui doit être remplacé à partir de mi-octobre par un ancien responsable du groupe, Elliott Hill. "Le conseil (d'administration) et John Donahoe ont décidé qu'il allait prendre sa retraite (...) à compter du 13 octobre. Il restera un conseiller du groupe pour assurer une transition en douceur jusqu'au 31 janvier 2025", est-il précisé dans un communiqué.
Elliott Hill, qui doit prendre ses fonctions de PDG le 14 octobre, a occupé plusieurs postes à responsabilité en Europe et en Amérique du Nord au sein de Nike avant de partir à la retraite en 2020, après trente-deux ans de carrière. Selon le communiqué, il a participé à la transformation du groupe en une entreprise réalisant plus de 39 milliards de dollars de chiffre d'affaires.
Dans les échanges électroniques après la clôture de la Bourse de New York, l'action Nike bondissait de 7,58%. "Il est devenu clair qu'il était temps de procéder à des changements au niveau de la direction et Elliott est la personne adéquate", a relevé M. Donahoe, cité dans le communiqué. De son côté, le futur patron a indiqué "être prêt à aider à diriger (Nike) vers un avenir encore plus brillant".
Repli des ventes
Cette annonce intervient au moment où le groupe, qui doit publier le 1er octobre les résultats de son premier trimestre décalé, traverse une passe difficile avec un repli de ses ventes depuis plusieurs trimestres - inférieures aux attentes des marchés - et des perspectives décevantes.
En juin, il a abaissé ses objectifs pour l'exercice en cours du fait d'"une incertitude croissante quant à l'environnement économique" et à des effets de change défavorables, liés au dollar fort. L'exercice 2025 "sera une année de transition" pour Nike, avait alors prévenu John Donahoe. Il avait anticipé un déclin du chiffre d'affaires de 5% environ, avec une baisse plus marquée au premier semestre qu'au second.
En revanche, il s'attendait à une amélioration des marges, grâce notamment à un recours plus limité aux promotions et à de moindres coûts de production. Dans une récente note, les analystes de TD Cowen soulignaient que "l'innovation n'avait pas encore entraîné une amélioration de la demande" et que la réduction de voilure dans ses trois plus importantes franchises de chaussures allaient affecter le chiffre d'affaires de l'exercice en cours.
