Edgartown Yacht Club The Perfect Venue for a Martha’s Vineyard Wedding

The Edgartown Yacht Club was the perfect venue for Martina and Alex’s dreamy Martha’s Vineyard wedding. The club’s picturesque location overlooking the harbor provided a beautiful backdrop for the couple’s ceremony and reception.

Martina and Alex’s wedding day was nothing short of magical, and their love story was celebrated in the most beautiful way. We were honored to be a part of their special day and wish them a lifetime of love and happiness.

Despite the humidity, the weather on their big day was otherwise perfect with clear blue skies that set the stage for a picture-perfect wedding.

The sun was shining, and a gentle breeze swept through the air, creating an idyllic atmosphere for their guests to celebrate their union.

A Ceremony at the Historic Edgartown Whaling Church

The ceremony at the Edgartown Whaling Church was a beautiful affair, with the couple surrounded by family and friends as they exchanged their vows. The church’s classic and elegant design made for a stunning backdrop as they began their journey as husband and wife.

The couple exchanged vows at the historic Edgartown Whaling Church, which added an extra touch of elegance to their special day. The church’s beautiful stained glass windows and classic New England architecture made for a stunning setting for the ceremony.

A Reception to Remember at the Edgartown Yacht Club

Following the ceremony, the reception took place under a tent at the Edgartown Yacht Club (a little unconventional but those were the COVID rules of 2021). The club’s spacious lawn and views of the harbor provided the perfect setting for the couple’s celebration with family and friends.

The reception at the Edgartown Yacht Club was a party to remember, with guests dancing the night away to the tunes of the live band . The stunning waterfront view added to the ambiance, and the tent provided a cozy and intimate setting for guests to enjoy the festivities.

A Family Tradition

Martina and Alex’s families have deep roots on Martha’s Vineyard, and all of Alex’s siblings had previously been married at the Edgartown Yacht Club. The venue holds a special place in their hearts, making it the perfect choice for their own wedding.

Alex’s family has deep roots in Martha’s Vineyard, and couple felt that their wedding venue should reflect this. It was particularly meaningful to Alex, as all of his siblings had previously gotten married at the same location.

A Dreamy Day on Martha’s Vineyard

Despite the slightly humid weather, the day was otherwise perfect, with clear skies and a light sea breeze. Martina and Alex’s wedding at the Edgartown Yacht Club was a celebration of love, family, and the natural beauty of Martha’s Vineyard.

Boston Wedding Photographer Kate McElwee

My second ever Matha’s Vineyard wedding, at the Old Whaling Church and Edgartown Yacht Club, was a glorious affair and a treat to photograph. In case you missed them, I recently posted some photos from the bridal luncheon and rehearsal dinner at the Daniel Fisher House here . The wedding day started bright and warm, and the girls enjoyed refreshing mimosas along with their morning dockside yoga at the private residence on Water Street. Later in the morning, Mary Bergeron arrived and started working on the girls’ hair and makeup. I loved that the getting ready activities took place entirely outside on the deck – Maddie even dressed out there!

My good friend Verna Pitts was helping me out all weekend, and she photographed the guys who were getting ready (and drinking Scotch) at the Brooks residence on Fuller Street. Once Brian was dressed, he walked down to the Edgartown Yacht Club and hopped on a boat, arriving in perfect nautical style for the first look. Maddie walked down the private dock to meet him, and I love the sweet, emotional moments between these two as they saw each other for the first time. After that, we took a few portraits at the house and on the tiny beach there, then it was off to church for the ceremony.

Guests arrived at the gorgeous Old Whaling Church on foot, on bike, and even a couple by golf cart. Maddie and her parents arrived in a delightful vintage car named Daisy, and were greeted by Maddie’s brothers, who were handing out programs on the church steps. The ceremony was so beautiful; the priest was fantastic, really quite funny, and there were a few minutes when Maddie and Brian were trying desperately not to burst out laughing.  It was pretty fun to document.  I also just LOVE the Old Whaling Church; it is such an incredibly beautiful building, and the new mural on the back wall behind the altar photographs so well.  The church also benefits from the loveliest natural light.

At the end of the ceremony, Maddie and Brian exited the church through rose petals (love this!) then processed down Main Street in Edgartown with a bagpiper.  This was one of my favorite moments from the entire year – what an awesome way to begin your life as a married couple!  Special thanks to Zoe and Kelsey of ZBR Events for helping us out by taking our camera bags to the Yacht Club so that we were able to walk and photograph the procession.

The reception was held at the Edgartown Yacht Club, where Maddie’s father Ned used to be president.  It is such a cool building; because it is surrounded by water on three sides it feels like you’re actually on a boat.  The decor transformed the space from woodsy and rustic to elegant and classy; perfect for this stylish couple.  The rain had started coming down by cocktail hour so guests cozied up throughout the space, enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.  The reception proper opened with a couple of welcome toasts and then Maddie and Brian performed their showstopping first dance – check out that lift and spin at the end – so great!  The rest of the evening was spent dining and photoboothing (thanks Verna!) and dancing to the fantastic band, The Sultans of Swing.

One last event that I LOVED: Brian and Maddie’s sparkler exit from their Edgartown Yacht Club wedding – it was pitch black (it was around midnight) but I absolutely love the photos from this grand finale.  Thank you all for an incredible weekend, we loved being a part of it!

Edgartown Yacht Club Wedding

April 4, 2022

After 11 years, Liza and AJ celebrated their Edgartown Yacht Club Wedding. Not a pandemic nor a Memorial Day weekend nor’easter could stop them from being with friends and family. Their day was full of romantic coastal details and a beautiful spring palette of blue, white and pops of greenery. A whimsical watercolor illustration of their favorite island was featured on the invitation suite. While the iconic edgartown lighthouse was the backdrop of AJ’s getting ready space. The couple renewed their vows at the Old Whaling Church before hopping on a boat to make a grand entrance to their cocktail hour. This much anticipated night was full of oysters, flowing drinks and dancing. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Chedrick! I am so grateful we were able to finally celebrate together.

Martina & Alexander

Martina and alexander continued his family's wedding tradition of getting married in edgartown..

Alexander Wolff’s family has something of a tradition when it comes to weddings. His family has summered on the Vineyard for three generations, and his parents and siblings were all married in Edgartown. Alexander hoped to follow in their footsteps, so as soon as he decided to propose to Martina Montalbetti, he began putting the pieces in place.

He chose a date and secured the Old Whaling Church and the Edgartown Yacht Club.

All he needed next was a “yes,” which Martina happily provided. She also eagerly supported Alexander’s vision for their wedding. “While I was generously given the option to choose wherever in the world I would like for the wedding to occur, and was told these venues only held security deposits, I too wanted to be a part of his history on the beautiful Island that the Wolff family introduced me to,” she said.

In an ironic twist of familiar fate, however, their plans were upended by the pandemic. In April of 2020, with their wedding six months away, they decided to postpone their celebration by almost a year. Then, two weeks before the new date, an indoor mask mandate was reinstated. Martina and Alexander opted to move the reception from the Edgartown Yacht Club to the club’s tennis courts, which meant they would now require tents, generators, mobile bathrooms, outdoor catering equipment, lighting, and more staff.

As if that weren’t enough, the rehearsal dinner was cancelled when the chef contracted Covid. “Within a matter of hours, Christian and Greer Thornton of Atria saved the day and adapted our menu,” she said.  By the morning of the wedding, they thought they were in the clear. And then, ants! An infestation discovered at the tennis courts sent Martina racing to the hardware store for ant spray.

With the help of family and friends, the wedding became a memorable group effort. “I still laugh thinking about the photos I have of all of them pitching in to help on the week of the wedding – gluing moss down to foam boards for our escort card table, sticking candles into hurricanes, organizing and personalizing the menus,” she said.

Despite all the hurdles, the ceremony unfolded perfectly and the couple made it to their first dance. “We looked into each other’s eyes and without saying a word we both knew, we had done it!” Martina said. “All the hard work paid off and we had the best night of our entire lives.”

For Rose Styron, Life Is Poetry in Motion

  • Mollie Doyle
  • Thursday, July 6, 2017 - 6:20pm

Poet, journalist and human rights activist Rose Styron’s day begins with bacon. Sitting in her light-filled kitchen overlooking the Vineyard Haven harbor, she bites down on a piece.

“I know it’s bad for you and all that, but I just love it,” she says. Behind her is a wall of phone numbers — from Island taxis and the fish market to the private lines of Martha’s Vineyard’s most celebrated summer residents.

“I lost my vision for a while a few years ago and adopted this system. Someone told me I shouldn’t have these names and numbers up on a wall for all to see, but . . . ” She waves an arm in the air and laughs. “I’m not worried about it. It works.”

Her 14-year-old grandson Huck wanders into the kitchen, says good morning, grabs some bacon and then wanders out to find his mom in what Rose refers to as “the kids’ house.” Rose points to a small building near the main house. “That was Bill’s studio.”

edgartown yacht club wedding

Rose was married to the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Bill Styron for 53 years. In 2006, he died of pneumonia at the age of 81. She tells a bit about the history of the studio: “It was one of the two prefab structures that existed when we bought the property in 1965. Bill used to sleep until noon and then we’d have lunch and then he’d go to that studio. We’d see him again at dinner and then, once the kids were in bed, I’d stay up and listen to what he’d written. The next day I’d type it up for him. Now his studio is where three teenagers are living.”

As if on cue, another young man tumbles out of the building.

“That’s Tommy Jr. He’s a sailor. All skin and bones right now.”

Tommy Jr. waves to Rose and trots across the lawn to the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club where he is working as a sailing instructor this summer. Then Huck’s mom Alexandra, whom everyone calls Al, wanders in. She greets her mom, grabs two slices of bacon and heads off to play tennis. Once Al leaves, Rose gets up and strolls into her office, which is essentially a glassed-in porch.

“I like to write outside,” she says. “This makes writing in the winter possible.”

edgartown yacht club wedding

Her office, like the rest of her home, has stacks of books everywhere, along with her tennis sneakers and racket. “I just stopped playing last year,” she says. “I liked mixed doubles so the men can run for me.”

On her office walls are pictures of Rose with Bill, Rose with her family, and Rose with her many friends.

“After John’s Hopkins [where she got her master’s in philosophy and writing], I fled to Rome. I ran into Bill there two weeks later and completely left my career for a decade. I had two books that I was supposed to write, one on Wallace Stevens and the other a collection of poems, but I never fulfilled the contracts. We married in Italy, in Ravello. We went to Paris. I met all his friends at the Paris Review. I loved them. But Europe — France, Italy — it was too beautiful for Bill to write there. He was working on Blankenship. So we headed to New York with the idea of it being a place where we could establish a routine. There would be no distractions. It was a terrible voyage from Naples. We were in this horrible third class cabin. I was sick the whole time. Bill was happily writing on his top bunk.”

She continues: “Anyway, New York was too loud. We settled in Roxbury, Conn. The house was white with green shutters for the first 10 years, but then Bill wanted a yellow house like his childhood home so we had yellow. We had three children in a hurry. And then Alexandra came seven years later. My life became Bill, his writing and the children. I was raised to let the boys be first. To follow my husband. So the house was yellow. And, to be honest, I was really interested in what Bill was working on.” She pauses, shakes her head at the memory. “To listen to Nat Turner as it came out.”

But life with Bill was not always easy. As Rose continues to share the story of her marriage, she explains that the burden of everything — the house, the children, taking care of Bill — fell on her shoulders. “Like any marriage, we fought,” she says. “Later he suffered from depression. It was work. But I knew ways to have a fine time.”

edgartown yacht club wedding

Tennis was one outlet. Writing, travel and human rights were others. One of her longtime travel partners, Victor Emanuel, is due at the house today. She met him nearly 40 years ago when he was at Harvard and wanted to quit college. He and his friend Peter Matthiessen, who was fishing and writing on Long Island, devised a plan.

“It was the early seventies and they wanted to create an excuse to travel, so a bunch of us paid to go on a trip with them,” she remembers. “It was a wonderful group of friends and their children. We went to Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana. I was blown away by the African birds. Totally hooked. And while I was there, I was asked by Amnesty International in London to check in on a writer named Breyten Breytenbach in South Africa — we were going to be flying through Johannesburg. Me on a birdwatching tour was apparently the perfect cover. But when we were in line at customs in Johannesburg, they arrested a few people in front of me. So I pulled my children out of line and headed straight for Botswana. The incredible thing that happened was that when we got to Botswana, we met a few people in a refugee camp who had seen Breyten Breytenbach and knew exactly where he was. So it all worked out.”

The trip to Africa, along with another trip to Moscow with her husband Bill, sparked Rose’s longtime involvement and commitment to human rights. “I heard about the gulags, the suffering. I wanted to, had to, do something to help. So I was a founding member of Amnesty in New York and I have been involved in one way or another ever since.”

The trip to Moscow also led her to co-author with Olga Andreyev Carlisle her first adult book of poetry, Modern Russian Poetry, a book of first translations of Russian poets. For the book, she studied Russian at Yale to be able to make elegant leaps from Russian to English.

“Osip Mandelstam was my favorite,” she notes.

edgartown yacht club wedding

Since then she has written several volumes of poetry: Thieves’ Afternoon, By Island Light and Fierce Day. She also published a collection of poems for children, From Summer to Summer, in 1965 under her maiden name Rose Burgunder.

Rose still writes every day, in the winter months when her social calendar is not so full. She just turned in a piece on Gabriel Garcia Marquez for The Review and wrote a forward Joe Esposito’s upcoming book Dinner in Camelot.

“I hate the computer,” she says. “I still write long hand and my assistant Christina types it up. It is laborious work.”

And although Bill has been dead for more than 10 years, he still remains in her life. She recently edited the Selected Letters of William Styron.

Outside in the yard, the sounds of tennis, sails flapping and children splashing in the water float over the hedge from the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club. Alexandra’s dog Dixie is hanging out on the porch in front of the children’s house. Rose gives her a pat. “She stays with me when Al travels.”

Rose’s granddaughter Martha appears in her riding kit and greets her grandmother with a smile. They have a brief chat before Martha slips into a car and heads to Arrowhead Farm for the day.

“You know, we bought this house sight unseen,” Rose says as she walks back to her house. “And when Hurricane Bob stripped these trees, making them look like telephone poles, people wanted to take them down, but I said no. Look at them now. They are beautiful. I love this yard. Football games, ping pong, croquet. So much activity. It is like a little theatre here. Mallard ducks roosting on the lawn. Eider ducks tapping on the deck and my windows. Grandchildren running here and there. I hate when all the boats are gone in the winter. But then there is the excitement in the spring when the masts start to appear again.”

edgartown yacht club wedding

The phone is ringing when Rose walks back into her house. It is the poet Jorie Graham. They chat for a bit. Rose laughs and listens. “I am so lucky to have such good friends.” She points to “my boys” on the fridge — Peter Matthiessen, Mike Nichols and her husband Bill.

“When I moved to the Island four years ago I was so fortunate to have Geraldine Brooks and Tony Horowitz living across the street. We’d play Scrabble.” She pauses. “But my closest neighbors and friends were Lucy and Sheldon Hackney. They were and are the most extraordinary of friends to us.”

Rose joined the Island Community Chorus when she moved to the Vineyard full time to meet year-round people. She added some off-Island boards to her long list of volunteer activities, including the Boston Book Festival chaired by Deborah Porter and Plimoth Plantation.

“It was hard moving here,” she admits. “In the summer I am out seven nights a week. In the winter, I’m lucky if I go out once a week.”

As she finishes this thought, her guest and friend Victor Emanuel arrives bearing pecans from Texas. Rose kisses him on the cheek and then sits down to sample the nuts. She declares them delicious. She looks up and sees Jim and Denise Reston strolling over to her porch. She pops up from her chair to say hello, then looks at her watch.

“Oh, it’s after one. Time for lunch!”

Later that night she dines with 10 friends. The following day, she will attend a book signing for Victor and host a dinner for him afterwards.

She laughs. “My social life. It’s ridiculously busy.” Then she beams. “Well, I’m never bored on the Island. I just love it here.”

Fairytale Wedding in Russia

Fairytale Wedding in Russia

Photo by Aleksandr Neplokhov  on Pexels

How are weddings celebrated in Russia?

  • Ransoms: This tradition comes from the south of Russia. The bride is kidnapped by friends and on the morning of the wedding the groom must try to win her back. Generally, this is done by bribery but sometimes dancing or even drinking contests are held.
  • Trickery: When the hopeful groom comes round in the morning to collect his bride, some devious parents-in-law present him with another woman dressed in a wedding gown and veil or, if they’re feeling especially mean, they might even dress-up a man!
  • “Gorka!”: This one word can be heard at every single Russian wedding. It means bitter and guests chant this at the after-party so as to implore the new couple to kiss earnestly and therefore bring sweetness where once there was bitterness.
  • Predictions: After the wedding ceremony, Russians have fun by trying to predict what gender the couple’s first baby will be. Before this used to be done by bits of paper, but now the predictions are often made by text!

Rossiya—that word alone elicits images of opulent churches, resplendent palaces and breathtaking cathedrals. In summer, equally stunning gardens form blooming borders to Russia’s countless palaces and the soft trickling of fountains, tucked away in shady corners, set the pace to the lovely and long days during white nights. And, in the seemingly endless winter, the sparkling white of snow softens the edges of Russia’s formal landscapes; making for a veritable winter wonderland. A more magical setting to say “I do” couldn’t have been dreamt up. Russia is the place where fairytales really can come true.

St Petersburg

A historic city need not be very old. Such is the case with St Petersburg. The city of dreams or, more specifically, of Peter the Great’s dreams has only been around for a little over three centuries, yet its streets are as rich in stories as the ancient cities of the Golden Ring. As the seat of the Romanov family, the city’s grand squares have seen an endless stream of royal wedding carriages roll through them. Though royal weddings are no longer, partners can still declare their love for one another in much the same way as the tsareviches and tsarinas did. A visit to St. Petersburg is still perfect for a wedding. At all the palaces and manors listed below weddings of all shapes and sizes can be effortlessly organized.

Catherine Palace

Fairytale Wedding in Russia - Catherine's Palace

Photo by Dan Tuykavin on Unsplash

The baby blue façade, edged with touches of white and gold, of Tsarina Elizabeth’s beloved summer retreat makes for an ever so romantic backdrop. Its acres of elegantly structured gardens and wide, open vistas are reminiscent of Versailles. Though outdoor weddings are all the rage, it would be a mistake not to take advantage of the exquisite rooms within the palace when planning a wedding. Many of the lavish halls within the palace were designed by one of the greatest architects of all time, Rastrelli and the Amber room is considered to be one of the most beautiful rooms ever created.

For those wanting a more low-key, natural wedding, the estate where Catherine Palace is based, Tsarskoye Selo, has a few smaller palaces and pavilions on the grounds. The bright and airy halls of the Cameron Gallery, for example, with French doors opening up onto a lovely terrace and a grand marble staircase make for a simple yet classy backdrop for a wedding ceremony. While the intimate pavilion on the island, set in a forest of trees, has interiors that are almost splendid as the Catherine palace.

Yelagin Palace

Fairytale Wedding in Russia - Yelagin Palace

In the very heart of St Petersburg lies an island full of rolling meadows, flower beds and oaks. Apart from being the city’s most treasured weekend spot, it’s also one of the most popular wedding venues. Though the charming Yelagin palace is out of the reach of most Russian couples, brides and their grooms often come after the nuptials to release balloons and pose on bridges arching over the canals.

Ethnography Museum

Yes, in Russia it’s even possible to get married in a museum! For a wedding that will have a lasting impression on your guests, the majestic Marble Hall of the Ethnographic museum is sure to take everyone’s breath away. Just imagine waltzing past the rows of 24 ton rose-colored columns with a vast crystal ceiling above and a sprawling marble floor below; it’s the stuff dreams are made of.

St.Petersburg, Inzhenernaya str., 4 T: +7(812)570 5768

Marble Palace

Due to their historical significance, some of St Petersburg’s palaces can’t be rented out in their entirety; however, the Marble Palace is an exception. Built for Catherine the Great’s lover, Count Orlov, the palace was made to be as rich and lavish as possible. With three-tiered chandeliers and mirrored ballrooms, all the ingredients for a royal wedding are to be found within this rather imposing building.

St.Petersburg, Millionnaya st., 5/1 T: +7(812)595 4240

Yusupov Palace

Fairytale Wedding in Russia - Yusupov Palace

So affluent were the Yusupov family, that they were said to have more riches than the Tsar. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that their family seat in St Petersburg, the Yusupov Palace , is perhaps one of the most lavish buildings in the city. Despite its beauty, the mansion isn’t as popular with couples as other palaces. Perhaps the fact that Rasputin was murdered in the basement puts people off…

St.Petersburg, Naberezhnaya Reki Moyki, 94 T: +7(812)314 9892

In the heart of Russia, the country’s glitziest and most glamorous shindigs are held. Helipads, floating stages and musical fountains are commonplace at wedding venues. Any desire, no matter how fanciful or flamboyant, can be fulfilled: the question is not ‘how?’ but rather how much one is willing to spend.

Royal Yacht Club

Only a few minutes’ drive from the city center lies one of the most glamorous wedding spots in Russia. With a Michelin-level restaurant (which can accommodate 500 guests), chic terraces, floating stages and faultless service; it’s no wonder so many celebrities have chosen to say ‘I do’ here. Naturally, plenty of fun can be had with the many gorgeous boats at the yacht club (imagine the entrance you could make, arriving by speed boat!).

Four Seasons Hotel Moscow

Fairytale Wedding in Russia - Four Seasons Hotel

The most iconic hotel in Moscow is undoubtedly the Four Seasons. Looking directly over the Red Square, it’s as central as you can get and, despite its soviet-esque exterior, it is in reality as modern as it gets, having been opened in 2014. Smoke machines, floating bouquets and ice sculptures, have all been used to make the most memorable weddings. For the wedding of your wildest dreams, trust the team at the Four Seasons to make it all come true.

Tsaritsyno Estate

One of Catherine the Great’s many ambitions was to build an Imperial estate for herself in the south of Moscow. Unfortunately, she died before she could see the surreal beauty of her pet project. Nestled within its picturesque, 405 hectares are countless greenhouses, pavilions, palaces and more that date back to the 18th century. Though the whole estate cannot be rented out, the main manor house can be fully disposed for a wedding ceremony and after-party. In fine weather, newlyweds have the option of exploring the estate on horseback or by boat and giant outdoor tents can be set up on the lawns.
