Blue Water Sailing School is an American Sailing Association certified sailing school with lessons for sailors at every experience level. Our week-long, live-aboard cruising and sailing courses give dedicated students the experience and confidence to achieve their dreams of nautical adventure. We’re based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and have additional sailing schools in Rhode Island, the Virgin Islands, and The Bahamas.

We’re one of the only sailing schools in the United States to offer sailing certification at every level of the American Sailing Association curriculum , and they’ve given us the ASA ’s Outstanding School award five times . Sailing education is all we do — with our specialized approach, you can be assured of the finest training available.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

Bareboat Charter Sailing License

Looking to bareboat charter a yacht on a sailing vacation? Need a license to qualify?  NauticEd has a plan and customized steps to ensure you succeed.

So here is the truth of the matter, you only need a Bareboat Charter License in Europe and the Seychelles. In every other location, you do not need a license or certification to sail a recreational vessel. Some states in the USA legally require residents to have a State Boater License Card, but that is it. So what then is all the hoohaa from certain sailing associations? Some people call them certification factories!

What is absolutely required of a skipper from every yacht charter company worldwide is a worthy resume.  Why?  Because some “license” or “certification” associations issue you a license/certification after a one or two weekend sailing course and a paper test. But, five or even ten days of sailing experience is simply not enough. These certifictions can not necessarily be trusted across the board. So yacht charter companies require an extensive resume demonstrating your sailing education, your practical logbook of experience as master of the vessel, and any achievements and competence sign-offs by practical sailing instructors (instructor sign-offs are recommended but not necessarily required).

So how does NauticEd help its students meet this need?

The NauticEd resume system and software simply and cleverly follows yacht charter requirements. SLC & ICC International Sailing License

The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) and the Sailing License and Credentials (SLC) are internationally accepted licenses for skippers wanting to charter recreational yachts in European waters.

Gain the ICC or SLC through NauticEd

The ICC, issued under United Nations Resolution 40, created a universally agreed upon standard of competence for skippers of recreational boats.

Recently, the SLC has become recognized as a more readily accessible and acceptable license because more schools are able to adminsiter the practical sailing competence assessment - especially in North America.

Because the ICC was created by the United Nations, a country that has adopted Resolution 40 must approve and assign a company or association to issue an ICC License. The United Kingdom has adopted Resolution 40; it has approved the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) to issue the ICC license to sailors after a skills assessment.   But because neither the USA nor Canada have adopted Resolution 40, no USA or Canadian appointed company or association can issue a true ICC.  To solve this, NauticEd has teamed up with the Royal Yachting Association to help our students obtain the ICC through available RYA schools.

To receive an ICC or an SLC, students must pass a one-day assessment that tests their international sailing knowledge as well as their on-the-water boating skills. The NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master Bundle of courses serves to gain enough theoretical knowledge to pass the theory portion of the assessment.  The practical on-the-water portion of the assessment requires demonstration of skills associated with bareboat chartering. The full skills list is downloadable for free under the student's curriculum tab when they sign-in to NauticEd. Significant past sailing experience is also required to be logged in the student's free online logbook. All this ensures that not only is the student legally licensed to charter a yacht, but also the student has a sufficient resume to be accepted by the charter company.

Stepping into the world of sailing for the first time is exciting and exhilarating. The courses in the RYA Yachtmaster training scheme will help you learn to sail and build confidence, become a useful crew member and even learn how to skipper a sailing yacht and manage it’s crew. 

Most courses can be taken either on your own or with friends and family, including children provided they meet our minimum age recommendations. There are also flexible options allowing you to do the course in one go or split over several days or weekends. 

Our sail cruising courses can also help you progress to the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence  which are recognised by maritime authorities worldwide and can be commercially endorsed for professional skippers and crew. 

So whether you’re new to boat ownership, want to charter a yacht on holiday, or to venture further offshore – there’s an RYA course for every level. 

Our practical on-the-water courses build confidence, teaching you everything from basic terminology and safety tips to how to skipper a yacht and manage its crew. You can enter at any level, provided you have the correct level of experience. 

Cruising Level 1 - An entry level course focusing on the principles of sailing a yacht. Can be run in conjunction with the Basic Skills course.

A short introduction to sailing for complete beginners.

Historic Detroit Yacht Club Gears Up to Host the Prestigious 2024 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship 

Host Spotlight: Detroit Yacht Club – 2024 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship  

As Detroit Yacht Club (DYC) gears up to host the 2024 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, Event Chair, Roy Lamphier, shares insights into what makes this historic venue an exceptional choice for this distinguished event. Founded in 1868 by Detroit sailing enthusiasts, the DYC has been a steadfast advocate for the sport of sailing for over a century and a half.   

DYC offers an extensive range of amenities, including a marina with over 300 boat wells, a harbor that accommodates vessels up to 100 feet in length, tennis courts, and a fitness center. The club also boasts an Olympic-size swimming pool, dining facilities, and a full calendar of social events, making it a hub for both sailing and social activities. It’s a vibrant community where members can enjoy the sport of sailing, as well as various recreational activities year-round.  

The club is no stranger to hosting major sailing events, having previously hosted the Mallory Cup back in 2000. The decision to host the championship again comes from the club’s commitment to promoting sailboat racing and fostering competitive excellence. “With a rich history in the sport, the DYC has been a leader in advancing sailboat racing through its vibrant racing programs, top-tier facilities, and deep-rooted tradition of supporting sailors of all levels,” says Lamphier.  

 Hosting the U.S. Adult Sailing Championship is a chance for DYC to showcase its commitment to sailing and its unique sailing environment. Lamphier advises other clubs considering hosting similar events to “embrace the opportunity to showcase both your club’s commitment to competitive sailing and your unique sailing environment. Focus on the strengths of your venue, from your facilities to your local waters, and highlight how your club fosters a strong culture of racing and sportsmanship.”  

For Lamphier, one of the most rewarding aspects of hosting such events is the energy and camaraderie it brings to the club. “There’s something special about watching talented sailors from all over come together, share their passion for the sport, and compete at a high level. It’s inspiring to see the blend of competition and sportsmanship, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of creating memorable experiences, both on the water and off.”

Vologda Oblast is a region in Northwestern Russia , which borders Tver Oblast and Novgorod Oblast to the southwest, Leningrad Oblast to the west, Karelia to the northwest, Arkhangelsk Oblast to the north, Kirov Oblast to the east, Kostroma Oblast to the southeast, and Yaroslavl Oblast to the south.

Other destinations

Vologda Oblast is spread out, but offers some pretty magnificent sights for the visitor. Sights you won't want to miss include the capital city of Vologda, the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, Russian North National Park, and of course, the Ferapontov Convent.

The daily overnight train from Moscow takes 8 hours to get to Vologda and an additional 3 hours to get to Cherepovets. The overnight train from Saint Petersburg to Vologda leaves Ladozhsky Train Station at around 20:00 and arrives 12.5 hours later, around 08:30.

Vologda's butter is reportedly Russia's best.

Trains head north from Vologda to Arkhangelsk and southeast to Kostroma .
