In Japanese, the word origami means "the art of folding paper," with ori meaning "folding" and kami meaning "paper." In modern usage, origami is an inclusive term for all paper folding practices. The goal when practicing origami is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques.

Learn how to make the most well-known origami boat using this quick and easy step-by-step tutorial. The origami boat you'll make with these instructions can also float in water .

Watch Now: How to Make an Origami Boat

This origami boat is a great model to teach to kids. It's similar to the origami hat you make with newspaper or the origami crane many of us made as children. Also, origami can be a great math-related activity for kids, allowing them to create using geometry.

What You'll Need

  • 1 Rectangular sheet of paper

Instructions

Make the first folds.

Start with your rectangular paper , orienting it vertically, with the long edges going up and down. Fold the bottom half up to the top. Fold the bottom right corner to the left corner and make a small pinch, just enough to crease the paper. Open it back up.

Create a Triangle Shape

Fold the left and right bottom corners up and to the middle using the crease as a guide. Flatten the folded pieces down. Rotate the paper. Fold one layer from the bottom up along the bottom of the front flaps.

A Boat Begins to Take Shape

Flip the paper over to the other side. Fold the bottom edge up in the same way. Unfold, and then fold the bottom right corner along the crease you made. Repeat on the bottom left flap.

Form the Bottom of the Boat

Re-fold the bottom edge back up. Open the bottom of the model. Look at the corners. Flatten and then insert the overlapping flap on the left underneath the right section.

Continue Folding

Fold one layer up to the top. Repeat on the back. Open the bottom of the model.

Finalize the Folds

Pull apart the left and right flaps. Flatten your paper sculpture in the shape of a boat. Open it slightly. The triangle in the middle resembles a sail .

Traditional Sailboat

“Better drowned than duffers if not duffers won’t drown.”

-Arthur Ransome, Author of Swallows and Amazons

An Easy Origami Sailboat

The Traditional Origami Sailboat is an elegant model that is simple to make.  This design is not 3D, so unlike the Sampan , I posted instructions for recently, it won’t float.  Some of you might recognise this model as the logo for OrigamiUSA.

Folding the Traditional Origami Sailboat

This is a simple origami model so it’s perfect for beginners.  Like most traditional origami, it can be folded out of just about any paper, although it looks best made from paper that is coloured differently on each side.  I have used Kami coloured on one side for the model pictured because I like the white sails against the coloured hull of the boat.

The traditional origami sailboat can be folded in less than five minutes.

Origami Sailboat Instructions

The origami sailboat is one of the models included in my new book, Origami Made Simple .  The book is designed for people that are new to origami so it includes written instructions along with the diagrams.  The 40 models in the book progress in difficulty with each chapter, starting at 10 steps or less, up to a maximum of 25 steps.

Origami Sailboat instructions and tutorial

The sailboat is a very easy traditional model. It has only two folds, but the boat looks very realistic. If you use a sheet of paper with a different color on each side, the hull of the boat will be of one color, and the sail will be of the other color. The sailboat is an interesting model because it shows how to reverse a fold. It is a perfect model to play in the sand at the beach!

Simple step-by-step origami boat tutorial

Simple origami boat tutorial

This simple origami boat is a fun model to fold. Use a fairly thin square of paper, and remember to fold neatly and crease firmly after each step.

simple origami sailboat

  • Start with your paper square as shown above. If you don’t have a creasing tool, you can use the back of your thumb nail to help crease. We’ll be folding it horizontally then vertically to start with, creating a grid of quarters. Ready?

simple origami sailboat

  • Fold in half from side to side, making sure the edges line up; crease and unfold.
  • Do the same thing, this time folding the other way, to create the horizontal fold; crease and open up fully.
  • You should be left with folds dissecting the paper into neat quarters.
  • Turning the paper 90 degrees, fold the bottom point under and up to meet the top point.
  • The next picture shows how the creases sit.
  • Take the bottom point and fold it up to meet the centre.
  • Do the same with the top point, so they meet in the middle.
  • Next, fold the left point into the centre…
  • …then fold this point back, but instead of folding from the original crease, fold a little way in from that.

simple origami sailboat

  • The next step can be a bit fiddly, but the previous folds will help you out! Pick the model up and press gently in the centre; the middle should go down and the outside edges should come up!
  • Gently press the bottom together to encourage the creases – you’re after a big triangle at the bottom and 2 smaller triangles at the top.
  • Once your model looks right, press and crease all the folds well.
  • Lastly, fold the bottom point back to form the bottom of your boat. If you get it just right, it should stand up by itself!

simple origami sailboat

Hope you enjoyed this model. They look great in different sizes to make a whole fleet.

Hi – This was easy to follow – thank you. However, I am unsure about the very last step. I am not sure what is meant by “fold(ing) the bottom point back”. Thank you.

Hi, thanks for trying this out! At the last step, you should be left with two ‘sails’ at the top, and the bottom goes down into a point; you just need to fold this point back/under (roughly in half) to create a flat bottom for your boat! This also makes a little stand for your boat. I hope that makes sense.
