• About the Star

The Star is one of the most prolific keelboats in the world for a reason: it is an incredible boat to sail. Designed in 1911 by Francis Sweisguth, it has proven to be a classic in every sense. It is the oldest Olympic class, having first been used in competition in 1932, and still at the heart of that competition today. Supported by a worldwide association the Star as a class is one of the best organized in sailing, with over 7,500 yachts built over its 80 year history, and 2000-plus actively racing today.

The Star has evolved into the consummate craft for all ranges of competition and performance sailing: its equipment and rig is simple enough for the novice, yet versatile enough for those on the forefront of sailing. It's large, powerful sailplan, combined with a sleek hull and light weight, propel the boat in the faintest of airs, while the flexible spar can be tuned to "de-power" when the breeze kicks up. The large main is infinitely adjustable, allowing the sailor to completely control the driving surface of the sail. Boats today are generally constructed of fiberglass, with positive flotation and an integrated keel. The design, sails, and equipment of the Star are governed by stringent class rules, created to improve competition on the basis of skill and control cost . This has also served to help the longevity of the design, keeping older boats competitive through careful evolution.

Stars are generally "dry-sailed", that is, stored on their trailers when not in use, and with a total weight around 1500 lbs, can easily be towed from place to place.

Many of the world's top sailors past and present have been involved in the Star Class. It's list of former World Champions reads like Who's Who of yachting: other top sailors such as Colin Beashel, John Kostecki, Mats Johansson, Hans Vogt, Benny Anderson, Rod Davis and Mark Reynolds are also involved in the Star class. But the class is made up of a variety of sailors of all ages and skill levels. One race on a Star has hooked some sailors for life: they'll tell you: It's a thrill.

Star: Art and Machine

The Star has practiced a philosophy of design evolution over its 80 year lifetime. Always staying at the forefront of sailing technology, the Star maintains a conservative balance aimed at keeping the level of competition high, holding costs in check and preserving the initial spirit of this great yacht. The priorities of safety and practicality have ruled most of the changes made over the years. This control over development of the class has kept boats that would have been retired at their age in other classes racing well into their golden years. Some of the features that can be found on today's Starboat are:

Adjustable Jib Leads The four-way action of the deck-mounted jib leads allow you to carve the shape of the sail, keeping a good shape to match changing conditions.

Hiking Vest A simple harness allows the crew to get his or her weight out of the boat more efficiently. Made legal by class rules in 1981, the vest must be equipped with a quick-release to ensure safe exit in an emergency. The vest eliminates alot of the exertion and gymnastics traditionally associated with extended periods of hiking.

Suction Bailers Developed by Star sailor Duarte Bello, sailors quickly discovered that several strategically placed bailers can quickly and safely drain any excess water in the cockpit Most Stars generally have 4, two in the center of the cockpit, and two located near the chines.

Circular Boom Vang Also developed by Duarte Bello for Stars, this innovation reached popularity in the 1960's, having proven to be a safe and efficient way to control the high loads of the long boom. This development later spread to other classes, among the 12-meters of America's Cup fame.

Whisker Pole The simple sailplan utilizes a whisker pole to sail wing-on-wing off the wind, thus making the most of the generous sail area.

Class Sail Measurement The ISCYRA measures every sail to ensure fair competition: the rules do not allow the exotic materials that drive up cost and cut the lifetime of other racing sails.

What do the colored Stars represent? Respecting the valued traditions of the Star Class, all Honor Award sailors are requested to display their highest award on their mainsail. Gold for World Champions Silver for Continental Blue for District Green for Novice

Blue Water Sailing School is an American Sailing Association certified sailing school with lessons for sailors at every experience level. Our week-long, live-aboard cruising and sailing courses give dedicated students the experience and confidence to achieve their dreams of nautical adventure. We’re based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and have additional sailing schools in Rhode Island, the Virgin Islands, and The Bahamas.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

Event Preview: 2024 U.S. Singlehanded Championships  

The 2024 U.S. Singlehanded Championships is set to sail into action from September 6-8 at Richmond Yacht Club , in Richmond, California. This prestigious event will feature top-notch competition in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Competitors will vie for the coveted titles of U.S. Men’s and Women’s Singlehanded Champions, making this a key event on the national sailing calendar.  

“One of my favorite things about working with hosts is seeing them bring their enthusiasm and pride for their club and class,” said Mitchell Brindley, Chair of the US Adult Singlehanded Sailing Championships Committee. “This year, both Richmond Yacht Club and the RS Aero class have really embraced the championships.”    

The U.S. Singlehanded Championships is known for the rigorous competition, attracting some of the most talented sailors in the country. The event serves as a proving ground for both emerging talents and seasoned sailors aiming to leave their mark on the national stage.  

“The past few years have seen the US Singlehanded Championships in ILCAs, Sunfish and now RS Aero,” said Bridnley. “I look forward to other classes wanting to partner with US Sailing for these championships.”  

The George D. O’Day Trophy is awarded to the overall winner of the U.S. Singlehanded Championships. Established in 1962 by George D. O’Day, this prestigious trophy is contested annually by top sailors in singlehanded boats, with the champion recognized as the United States Singlehanded Champion. Previous winners include Conor Blouin, Malcolm Lamphere, Leo Boucher, Marek Zaleski, Henry Marshall, Charlie Buckingham, Mitch Hall, and Brad Funk.   

Peter J. Barrett won the inaugural U.S. Singlehanded Championship in 1962, displaying exceptional skill and sportsmanship that later earned him an Olympic silver medal in the Finn class in 1964 and a gold in the Star class in 1968. His commitment to fair play, highlighted by his self-penalization during the 1964 Olympics, exemplified the integrity that defined his sailing career. The Peter J. Barrett Sportsmanship Award is now presented at US Sailing Championships to the competitor that best displays Peter’s sportsmanship. Past recipients include Andre Patin, Peter Edwards, Ravi Parent, and Michael Bradley.   

The Helen Hanley Trophy, established in 2011, is awarded to the top female sailor at the U.S. Singlehanded Championships. Named in honor of Helen Wills Hanley, a dedicated sailor and pioneer in the South Atlantic sailing community, the trophy recognizes her contributions to the sport and her legacy in promoting women’s sailing. Previous winners include Hanne Weaver, Elaine Parshall, Anna Weis, Paige Railey, Simone Staff, and Allie Blecher.   

“This year, I hope the support for the US Championships from US Sailing and partners offers a world class experience for RS Aero class competitors,” said Brindley. “The hosts at Richmond Yacht Club have an excellent team in place from race management to shore support. And I know the venue, San Fransico Bay, will not disappoint.”

End of an era in Mixed Multihull event

The Olympic mulithull sailors can breathe a sigh of relief as the dominant duo in the Nacra 17 Class has come to an end. Caterina Banti – 37-year-old Italian sailor, two-time Olympic gold medalist with Ruggero Tita – has called it quits.

“The gold I won at the last Olympics paired with Ruggero Tita was the best possible way to end my career as an athlete,” she said while speaking to Radio Sportiva. “I had decided a few months ago, and I have no regrets, now I have to think about what I will do in life. Yes, Ruggero already knew.”

There first gold was at Tokyo 2020, and were dominant again at Paris 2024. “In Marseille there was a lot of pressure on us because everyone said ‘Tita and Banti will win gold again’. However, nothing is a given. But we were good. I knew it would be my last performance and it had to be the best possible. And so it was, and I brought home the gold medal.”

Tita and Banti have been at the top of the class since the moment they teamed up together in 2017, which coincided with the period the class evolved to full foiling. They won six World Championships in eight years as a partnership, missing the 2021 Worlds in a post-Olympic break, and finishing 7th in 2019. They pioneered the dynamic movements required for downwind foiling and retired as the clear leaders of the fleet.

At times, they faced as much internal competition from other Italian teams as they did from the rest of the World. In 2019, Vittorio Bissaro with Maelle Frascari (ITA) won the Nacra 17 World Championship. Even after Tita and Banti won the 2020 Worlds, there was still internal discussion about which World Championship crew would be nominated by Italy for the Tokyo Games.

Then in 2023, Ginaluigi Ugolini with Maria Giubilei (ITA) were nominated for the 2023 Test Event in Marseilles and won that regatta, again putting Tita and Banti under pressure. But they won the 2023 and 2024 Worlds to put their nomination for Paris out of question. Their victories were driven by a dominant Italian squad.

Banti has a bachelor’s degree from Sapienza University and a master’s degree from Orientale University in Naples in Oriental Languages and Civilization. What will she do now? “I have a series of ideas and projects in my head, but they are still in progress, and it’s premature to talk about them. However, I would like to stay in the world of sport and pass on what I have learned in all these years.”

Cleveland Metroparks, partners announce world-class community sailing center to open in 2026

C LEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland has one of the world’s largest freshwater resources. A new project spearheaded by Cleveland Metroparks in concert with regional partners stands to put the community on that water.

Cleveland Metroparks officials announced earlier this morning the plans for the Patrick S. Parker Community Sailing Center at East 55th Street Marina. It will be first of its kind along Lake Erie in Ohio.

The world-class community sailing center will provide “unprecedented public access and sailing opportunities to the region through the major support of project partners, including the Parker Hannifin Corp. and Madeleine S. Parker, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Supporting Foundation and The Cleveland Foundry ,” according to today’s news release.

“When I was recruited to Cleveland 14 years ago, one of the main priorities was to revitalize, reinvigorate and reestablish local control of the lakefront parks,” Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian Zimmerman said in an exclusive interview with cleveland.com on the eve of the announcement.

“We’ve done that. We have talked internally for a good bit of time about the notion of a community sailing center,” he added.

“The proof of concept has been with our partners at The Foundry, who are working very hard to create programmatic elements from a capacity standpoint. Our outdoor experiences group would put classes on and they would sell out within minutes,” Zimmerman said.

The Foundry, a community rowing and sailing center in The Flats, serves as equal parts state-of-the-art training facility and “special haven” for kids in Cleveland. Located at 1831 Columbus Road, the facility was once a lumber yard and a furnace company . St. Mary’s, the first Catholic church in the Flats, sat on the site for more than 60 years in the 19th century.

Deciding that rowing, sailing and watersports were lacking in the region, Mike and Gina Trebilcock came up with a $15 million investment. The founder and chairman of MCPc data-protection company and Foundry executive director, respectively, are dyed-in-the-wool Clevelanders. Three of their children row; one coaches at The Foundry.

Their vision has become a huge success story, inching The Foundry toward a 10th anniversary.

“There is a great demand for people to get access to the water and at the same time there is a barrier to getting onto the water,” Zimmerman said. “Our goal is really to put – and keep – the word ‘community’ in this concept of being able to get people on the water.”

Renderings created in-house by a Cleveland Metroparks employee show that two new buildings will make up the sailing center. Plans account for ”multi-purpose learning spaces, indoor and outdoor community areas, concessions and dining, a rooftop deck, overlook tower, and a boathouse that will serve as the sailing hub.”

The new sailing center will be fully accessible, from adaptive equipment to wheelchair-accessible facilities, going beyond ADA compliance and incorporating universal design.

Zimmerman said in the news release that the state-of-the-art facility “will be a beacon for inclusivity, equity and access along our lakefront, and build on our ongoing collective efforts to serve East Side communities, including the CHEERS project, Mandel Community Trail and enhancements to Gordon Park South.”

It’s expected that the sailing center will serve as a year-round community anchor and lakefront destination for sporting and community events, education, retail, marina operations, recreation and dining.

The facility will offer public programs to bring the benefits of sailing to those who historically have faced economic barriers to participate in sailing and perhaps other watersport activities.

Jenny Parmentier, chairman of the board and CEO of Parker Hannifin Corp., said in the news release that the center “will allow residents of our hometown to access new recreational opportunities, build skills and connect with our region’s lakefront,” adding that the investment is about “strengthening our community through participation in the sport of sailing.”

The sailing center also will connect the city of Cleveland’s harbor to the city’s cultural hub of University Circle through its location along the Mandel Community Trail, which is commencing construction along North Marginal Road from East Ninth to East 55th streets.

Despite being situated along a major river and one of the Great Lakes, many Cleveland residents have never experienced direct water-based recreation because of physical, economic and social barriers.

The news release notes that over 90% of Lake Erie’s shoreline within Cuyahoga County is “privately owned with no public access.” That’s about to change.

“Together, we are breaking down barriers to enhance the quality of life for our region, particularly in our neighborhoods closest to the lakefront who have been historically disconnected,” said Jehuda Reinharz, president and CEO of the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, a partner in the Cleveland Metroparks plan.

The sailing center will host year-round sailing STEM programming for schools and community partnership organizations under operation of The Cleveland Foundry – including “Youth Learn-to-Sail,” “Youth Learn-to-Race,” “Interscholastic Racing,” “Family Sailing Basics” and more.

The Foundry will offer Ohio boating safety and education classes and water safety certifications classes to the community, providing a pathway for new learning opportunities that aim to break down socio-economic barriers while improving public access to the sport and the lakefront.

In an interview with cleveland.com last month, The Foundry’s Gina Trebilcock said that projects like the sailing center – when utilized in concert with Metroparks, Foundry and other resources – open the region’s residents to a “wider world.”

She sees successes because of the sailing center building exponentially – on an individual level for participants in the programs, but also for the community at large and the city, which will become a regional draw for those looking to engage in nautical education.

The center was inspired in part by Patrick Parker, former chairman and CEO of Parker Hannifin, who was an avid sailor and Cleveland philanthropist. Sailing, innovation and philanthropy moved his wife Madeleine Parker to give the lead gift in his name.

“He would be happy to have his name on this sailing center,” she said in the statement.

Construction on the $15 million sailing center is expected to be completed in 2026. Funds for the project are coming from leadership gifts, private funders and state and local grants.

Lake access is something that a lot of other larger cities do quite well – namely Toronto, Milwaukee and Chicago. Zimmerman agreed in his interview with cleveland.com that those locations factored into the inspiration behind this project.

“Having come to and from Milwaukee, having spent time in Chicago and Baltimore and other [waterfront] areas, this was something [Cleveland has] been lacking amenities in, at least my mind, for what we needed to look like,” said Zimmerman.

Citing upgrades along Lake Erie from Huntington Beach to Edgewater and its new beach house, to the Wendy Park Bridge, Whiskey Island trail connector and more, he said the East 55th Street corridor is the next logical step.

“We’ve worked at this in earnest the last five years, traveling to different parts of the country to see what I would say are the highest and best sailing centers in the country, taking their best secrets and bringing them to Cleveland,” Zimmerman said.

He said it will be an ongoing process with a lot of moving parts, construction costs and unique challenges.

“[W]e are looking at breaking ground in different phases for this project. It is very complex because we are currently running marina operations out of a location and a restaurant out of the other and there’s a lot of work that we need to do. We also have winter in Cleveland to work around,” Zimmerman said.

“We look forward to the Patrick S. Parker Community Sailing Center coming online for Clevelanders in 2026.”

Embankments of Moscow

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). Monasteries and temples

• Novospassky Monastery
• Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
• Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
• Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
• Cathedral of Christ the Savior
• The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.

World-class sailing center coming to the shores of Lake Erie

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The E. 55th Street Marina will look much different in the coming years as Cleveland Metroparks announced plans to build a first-of-its-kind sailing center.

The Patrick S. Parker Community Sailing Center will provide public access and sailing opportunities to the region. Two new facilities will be built along Lake Erie, featuring multi-purpose learning spaces, indoor and outdoor community gathering areas, dining options, a rooftop deck, an overlook tower and a boathouse that will serve as the sailing hub, according to a release from Cleveland Metroparks .

Public programs will also be available, bringing the benefits of sailing to those who have never before had an opportunity to participate in the sport. The Sailing Center will also host year-round Sailing STEM programming for schools and community partnership organizations under the operation of The Cleveland Foundry, a non-profit that gives youth access to the sports of rowing and sailing, Cleveland Metroparks announced.

The Sailing Center will also connect the City of Cleveland’s harbor to the city’s cultural hub of University Circle through its location along the Mandel Community Trail that is being built along North Marginal Road from E. 9th to E. 55th streets, the release said.

Actor Michael Keaton to change name

The project has a price tag of $15 million with funds coming from a number of partners including the Parker Hannifin Corporation and Madeleine S. Parker, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Supporting Foundation and The Cleveland Foundry, among others.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2026.

NASA's solar sailing spacecraft is tumbling – but that's part of the plan

Who needs fuel – or even engines – when you could use the sun to push a spacecraft along.

NASA has announced its experimental ACS3 solar-sailing spacecraft is working as expected, after it was spotted tumbling in the night sky.

The 80 m 2 (860 sq ft) Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) successfully spread its sails last week. The spacecraft uses pressure produced by solar radiation to move – doing away with conventional rocket propellant. NASA is testing the sail in the hope that its design, and the materials used, are viable for future vessels.

As the boffins put it:

NASA's Advanced Composite Solar Sail System, or ACS3, technology demonstration uses composite materials – or a combination of materials with different properties – in its novel, lightweight booms that deploy from a CubeSat. Data obtained from ACS3 will guide the design of future larger-scale composite solar sail systems that could be used for space weather early warning satellites, near-Earth asteroid reconnaissance missions, or communications relays for crewed exploration missions.

Questions were raised this week after the instrument – which launched in April and is now in Earth's orbit – was observed to be slowly tumbling, gyrating, or wobbling.

NASA's Langley Research Center assured the public that's neither unusual nor worrying.

"Our Solar Sail System is sailing around Earth, slowly tumbling as expected while the mission team characterizes its boom and sails," the agency explained Thursday.

The first probe to use solar radiation pressure as a major means for orientation during flight was NASA's 1970s-era Mariner 10 , which caught sunlight on its solar panels and high-gain antenna. ACS3 is using vastly larger composite sails to do this – and hopefully far more efficiently.

NASA is not alone in pursuing solar sails. Japan's JAXA managed a Venus flyby in 2010 using solar sails. And the Planetary Society executed an unfurling in 2019.

It's not ACS3's sails that are of most interest: the booms on which they hang are said to be "made from a polymer material that is flexible and reinforced with carbon fiber."

"This composite material can be rolled for compact stowage, but remains strong and lightweight when unrolled. It is also very stiff and resistant to bending and warping due to changes in temperature," according to NASA.

"The ACS3 technology demonstration will also test an innovative tape-spool boom extraction system designed to minimize jamming of the coiled booms during deployment."

Coiled components matter, because they mean items with large surface area can be packed into the small volume of spacecraft, making them easier to launch. ®

Scientists Have a New Theory About Why Orcas Are Attacking Boats

A pod of orcas damaged a boat and left its two-person crew stranded. It was the latest in a string of attacks that research suggests could be used for hunting practice.

The orcas have struck again — this time ramming a sailboat off Spain’s northwest coast, rescue workers said on Tuesday.

A pod of orcas damaged the rudder of a sailboat, leaving its two-person crew stranded in the waters off Cape Finisterre Sunday, according to an emailed statement from the rescue workers. It is the latest in a string of attacks by pods of orcas swimming around the Iberian Peninsula.

While the sailboat, the Amidala, did not sink, pods of orcas have sunk several vessels in recent years. Researchers still do not know whether the attacks are playful or malicious, but a new theory based on studying the troublesome pods of orcas suggests that they could be using the boats as practice targets for new hunting techniques. Other competing theories still exist.

Regardless of the orcas’ intentions, the behavior is enough to worry sailors journeying in the highly trafficked waters around North Africa, Spain and Portugal.

The Amidala, manned by a crew of two Belgians, encountered an unknown number of orcas on Sunday afternoon. They sent a mayday distress call to the Finisterre Maritime Rescue Center, which towed the vessel back to shore, the center said.

The sailboat’s damaged rudder, and poor weather conditions in the area, made the rescue more arduous, with waves reaching up to nearly 10 feet and winds hitting speeds of 40 miles per hour. A female crew member on the Amidala suffered injuries to her hand as the sailboat was being towed, and she was transferred to a rescue vessel, the rescue center said. After more than four hours, the Amidala made it back to shore.

In recent years, sailors have shared tips about how to stop orca rammings, or at the very least deter them. Deterrents include painting the hull a different color. Another tactic is to blast heavy metal music, or to scatter sand into the ocean. There’s also an app that tracks orca activity in the ocean, letting boats steer clear of pods.

Researchers have no definitive explanations about why orcas, seemingly in this region alone, are increasingly ramming ships. One theory suggests that the ramming stems from past traumatic encounters between orcas and boats. Some scientists think it may be simpler than that — as naturally curious and playful mammals, orcas may just be having some fun.

The other, new, theory comes from the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute in Spain, which has been tracking the orca ship rammings since 2020. It has found that orca pods off the coast of Spain, who migrate in the waters between North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula, have developed a taste of Atlantic bluefin tuna, according to a paper the institute will publish next month.

That species of tuna can grow up to 10 feet long and move at speeds that orcas can’t always catch, at least not without training, said Bruno Díaz López, the institute’s chief biologist. Sailboats are often the ideal size to train on — they move quickly and silently, and close to the water’s surface, not unlike the orcas’ prey.

Researchers studying the ramming incidents have found that it is mostly young orcas who go after sailboats, but sometimes adults appear to be teaching younger members of the pod how to do so. The orcas have also figured out that the rudder is soft enough to bite, and that fiberglass makes for good ramming, Mr. Díaz López said.

“This is like a training toy,” Mr. Díaz López said. “It’s a shame that we humans are in the middle of this game, but they are learning.”
