Boat of the Week: The Most Successful Superyacht in the World Just Got a Next-Gen Makeover

Westport's latest 112-foot superyacht has a dramatically different interior.

It’s hard to imagine that changing a staircase can transform the interior of a superyacht , but in the case of the Westport 112, it became the turning point in its new design. The American builder’s entry-level boat is arguably the most successful superyacht in the world. Since it was introduced in 1994, 62 112s have been launched and three others are currently in build. No other yacht has had that kind of staying power or popularity among owners.

Therein lies a dilemma. Changing a superyacht’s look after a long, successful run can be a tricky proposition. But times change, designs come and go, and what was popular in 1994 can seem dated. Fortunately for Westport, American yacht owners tend to be relatively traditional in their tastes. That is, until recently.

“We had potential customers coming up to us with brochures from European builders, asking if we could do this or that with our design,” Alex Rogers, sales director of Westport Yachts , told Robb Report on a recent tour of Book Ends , the latest 112 to hit the water. “It made us rethink the entire design.”

Sylvia Bolton, Westport’s in-house designer, sees the design shift in even stronger terms: “ Book Ends is as different as it can be from the last generation without actually changing the layout.”

Westport’s naval architects added larger exterior windows, replacing the rows of portholes along the hull and the main windows in the superstructure, adding three inches to enhance natural light. That gave the exterior a more contemporary look. Bolton decided to go full monty with the interior, without changing the internal structure. Moving bulkheads and shifting spaces can be an expensive, complicated process, especially for a company that built its business model on an assembly-line process where changes translated to big costs for the owner. Besides, the 112’s hull has proven its worth for 27 years.

So, Bolton started with the staircase. “Originally it was a circular staircase with two radiuses extended into the hallway,” she says. “We changed it to a straight staircase. It was amazing how much it opened up that space.”

The country kitchen on the 112 is a favorite gathering point for owners, guests and crew, so the design included a flowing piece of marble on the island and large-screen televisions to add luxury to the galley’s inherent sociability. Courtesy Westport Yachts

Opening space across the interior was a key goal, so Bolton focused on simple things like straightening corners and removing wide cabinets that had been part of the 112’s layout for years. She also modernized the interior with new surfaces, stones and even wall sculptures.

A pair of life-sized reef sharks, extended on a hallway wall, seem to be swimming in a dark-blue coral reef. At the bottom of the stairway on the lower deck is a wall-sized photo of a school of reef fish. Sand dollars on the main salon wall also became part of the new standard design.

“I really like blue and started thinking about sea life,” Bolton says. “I thought it would make a good theme, and most times, clients resonate with them. We also make everything easily removable in case the client doesn’t like it.”

The owner of Book Ends came into the build process late, so he had little choice over the big features in the interior. But he must’ve liked Bolton’s design, because the only thing that changed were the big sand dollars in the salon, which were replaced with bright, colored glass spheres.

The last 112 I’d been on was about ten years ago, and boy, talk about a sea change. Instead of what I remembered as somewhat dated traditional American design, the 112 now had features like leather-covered handles on doors and drawers, a rich Rousseau finish on the oak walls (where the grain runs horizontally) and lots of natural light.

The two areas I liked best weren’t the main salon or main suite, both open and spacious, but the country kitchen and pilot house. Open kitchens have been one of Westport’s hallmarks over the years, showing the difference between European and American owners. Europeans tend to like small galleys where staff are confined to make meals, but the Americans use the kitchen much as they do at home, as social gathering points for owner, guests and crew.

Bolton worked within the same layout as previous 112s, but modernized it with new colors and materials, including a beautiful piece of marble that flowed over one side of the galley’s center island and extended to the floor. It was clearly the room’s centerpiece. “Stone is something that we pay particular attention to,” says Bolton. “It’s an accent that can make or break a space. It can take several months to find the right piece, and the right stone can even make you change a design to accommodate it.”

The Calacatta marble down in the main suite’s bath and shower was also exceptional, a flowing, soft-grained stone that filled the space with a subtle luxury. The main bedroom was nice, but the marble ensuite made it extraordinary.

Seeing this new interior changed another perception I’d had about Westports—that the quality wasn’t as strong as some of the brand’s competitors. But I’d confused myself by comparing Westport’s older interiors with more modern European designs. Looking at Book Ends , I could see that the materials—and craftsmanship—were as strong as the European builders, and in some cases, better. It just took a new design to showcase it.

My favorite spot on the 112 was the pilothouse, another large social area, with lounges and big windows surrounding the helm chair and navigation console.

Bolton added subtle touches here by lowering the height of a side lounge to allow more natural light below, while adding a school of swimming fish on the rear wall’s Lucite surface. “Lucite tends be clear during the daylight hours, so you don’t really see the mural,” she says. “But at night, it becomes vivid, and the reflects off the windows as well, so it feels like you’re surrounded by fish.”

The designer used Lucite beneath the stairs to the sky-deck to deliver a floating feel between stairs. “To me, the qualities of the materials are important,” she says. “Each can provide a different finish with a tactile quality that is also important visually. It adds to the boat’s overall feel.”

The pilothouse incorporates a new, more open design, with features like fish patterns on a lucite wall.

The new exterior includes larger windows along the superstructure and in the hull sides. Courtesy Westport Yachts

While Book Ends represents the new generation of Westport 112s, it’s just the start. Westport is working on another 112 now where the owners, concerned about sustainability, do not want any material that is not manufactured or recycled—in other words, no leathers, original woods or natural marble. Talk about a sea change .

112 ft yacht

Few, if any, yacht designs have as long and interesting a timeline as the Westport 112 motoryacht. This model’s longevity is due entirely to its popularity with buyers, as evidenced by the 50 hulls built to date. Currently being delivered at the rate of three per year, there is no end in sight.

This level of long-term commercial success requires both new and repeat buyers. It’s not surprising that owners of smaller yachts, Westport and otherwise, would look to the 112 as their desires and resources grew. While that is the norm, one buyer taking delivery of a new 2012 model traded in his 1998 Westport 112.

Such an exchange indicates continuing satisfaction with the construction and functionality of the model; a cordial relationship with the builder and its after-sale support services; and a craving for the enhanced features available only on the newer version of the yacht. Among the most prominent of those elements is the newly optional arrangement featuring a main-deck master suite.

Phil Purcell, Westport’s longtime vice president of sales, says the new arrangement was proposed to reignite interest among buyers during the economic slump that first hit the marine industry in 2008. The layout was intended to appeal to Middle Eastern yachtsmen, and the first hull with an on-deck master was delivered to a client in Lebanon. Subsequent sales of the Westport 112, however, have been to North American buyers. Purcell is quick to point out that both of the arrangement plans are and will remain available, but he predicts that three out of four new builds will have the on-deck master stateroom.

Purcell certainly knows his stuff when it comes to yachts and the buyers, but I’d bet his prediction will hold true only until Westport’s team of innovative designers, under the leadership of naval architect Taylor Olson and engineering coordinator Tom Fox, develops yet another incarnation of the venerable model. To understand just how Westport has arrived where it is today, let’s take a look at the origins and the journey of the yard and the Westport 112 from inception to the present.

Westport Shipyard was founded in 1964 in the southwestern Washington town of the same name. Initially, it focused on building vessels for the local commercial fishing industry, but word of the yard’s quality work soon spread and others came knocking. Brothers Rick and Randy Rust bought the shipyard in 1977. The Rusts brought a broader outlook to the company and soon added commercial passenger vessels to Westport’s portfolio.

An attractive pair of 92-foot passenger ferries serving California’s Catalina Island generated a ton of publicity for the yard, and their offshore performance brought inquiries for other applications. Having heavily invested in specialized equipment to speed the production and enhance the quality of fiberglass hulls, superstructures and other molded parts, Westport received orders from custom builders around the Pacific Northwest to supply their lamination needs.

The Rusts favored Seattle designer Jack Sarin, who had perfected his trade under the tutelage of the legendary Ed Monk Sr., working alongside Ed Monk Jr. The two younger men, today both in their 70s and with formidable reputations of their own, eventually set up separate design studios, Monk Jr. focusing on smaller yachts and commercial craft while Sarin tended to focus on larger vessels. Thus was the genesis of Golden Delicious, a 98-foot motoryacht designed by Sarin and built by Westport, which took the industry by storm in 1988. It was a particularly pretty boat with an excellent hull and, if not the largest, was certainly among the biggest fiberglass yachts built at that time. It formed the basis for the current Westport 98.

Over the years, the Rusts expanded their line of yachts to include the Westport 112, also based on a Sarin-designed hull. They would eventually sell the company, part at first and then all, to Orin Edson, an entrepreneur who had built an empire in production boatbuilding with the U.S. Marine Corp., located in northern Washington.

Edson brought in fresh ideas and fresh faces, hiring Daryl Wakefield as general manager and augmenting the design talents of Sarin with those of Bill Garden and Greg Marshall. Wakefield, in turn, hired Olson (who had worked with Sarin) and Fox (who had worked with Wakefield at Admiral Yachts) to implement the new order.

The most important of the changes were Edson-inspired procedures and controls, which enabled Westport to build custom yachts in an environment that is largely production-oriented. Such an approach ensures consistent quality while keeping costs in check, both of which significantly benefit the builder and buyer alike. Thus, Westport’s line of offerings is broad and diverse, but only specific lengths are available. Arrangement choices can be tweaked a bit, but the basic platform is fixed — bulkheads and stairways, for instance, cannot be moved. Propulsion packages change only to incorporate new technology. The Westport 112 has transitioned from Detroit 8V92s to Detroit 12V92s to MTU 396s to today’s pair of MTU 16V2000 engines, now driving custom propellers at lower shaft speeds for better efficiency and less vibration, whether at the yacht’s top speed of 25 knots or her cruise of 22 knots.

Such limitations don’t seem to be a hindrance to buyers of the 112, who are free to personalize their yachts with a wide choice of decor and other interior options, and now, a second arrangement plan. The classic edition includes a master, a VIP and two twin staterooms belowdecks, and a country kitchen forward on the main deck. This vessel’s new arrangement still has four guest staterooms below, although the fourth is now a small upper/lower rather than a king master suite. The master suite sits where the country kitchen once resided, all the way forward on the main deck, with a spacious head down a few steps under the foredecks, borrowing from the space formerly occupied by the below-deck master. Otherwise, much is the same in both versions, with a spacious salon, dining room, galley and open-yet-protected afterdeck on the main level, and with lots of open entertainment area topside and forward.

The Westport 112 still rides on the original Sarin-designed hull form, but credit for the modern profile and new arrangement goes to Taylor Olson. Purcell readily gives Olson his due, pointing out that he restyled not only the 112, but the 130 as well, to create a family look established by Marshall’s restyling of Westport’s 98. The multitalented Olson also collaborated with Garden on the hull for the Westport 164, which features exterior styling by Donald Starkey.

Although the 112 has a new exterior and a new arrangement, the builder’s attention to detail in construction and outfit, in joinery and systems, remains much as it has been since the beginning — the best it can be, and utterly complete on delivery. Westport’s reputation is so good that many buyers dispense with the traditional shakedown cruise, instead departing the yard and heading off on their maiden voyage, confident that their vessel will perform as promised.

 • wpcf_crew: a:15:{s:4:"info";s:3417:"Captain: Nick Brown:
Before moving to Florida, Nick grew up a second-generation yachtsman hailing from Southern
California. Surfing, fishing, diving, and sailing his way through his youth. As a teenager
he took every opportunity that came his way, alongside his big brother, delivering
yachts up and down the US and Mexican coast with his dad, Captain Dan Brown. Shortly
after turning 19, he acquired his 100-ton captains license, launching him into a
commercial captain’s position aboard a 100-person passenger ferry which operated
between Long Beach, CA and Catalina Island off the Pacific Coast.

As Captain Nick’s career progressed, he added commercial tugboats, commercial fishing boats,
multiple racing sailboats and private/charter yachts to his resume. Traveling throughout
the entire Caribbean, North/South America, Pacific, Europe (including the UK and Baltic
Sea), and New England. He honed his skills of becoming a seasoned charter Captain.

Nick and his wife Erin, helped develop the M/Y Spirit program from day one, dedicating
the last 2 1⁄2 years aboard to run her at her full potential. They are looking forward to
future charter trips onboard and providing optimum service while charter clients enjoy their ideal vacation aboard the M/Y SPIRIT.

Stewardess: Erin MacChesney

First Mate: Michael O’Flaherty
Michael started boating as a young kid learning to sail on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. Growing up, Michael had a passion for any pastime on the ocean whether the activity had been fishing, surfing or sailing. As he got older, sailing only played more of a role in his life as he pursued sailing to the competitive level competing in regattas all up and down the east coast of the United States. Aside from sailing, Michael was a dockhand at the Newport Yachting Center Marina from 2017-2021 which ultimately facilitated his start in the marine industry. Having spent many of his days sailing, fishing or surfing, Michael has an adequate understanding of the water in order to make your yachting experience more pleasant. Michael welcomes charter guests aboard for an experience of a lifetime.

Chef: Skye Burris
Skye grew up in a small boating community on Long Island Sound. Playing on the beach or
ripping around the sound via boat every chance she got, she fell in love with being on the
water.

Skye went to college on an athletic scholarship studying Psychology and playing high level
basketball all four years. Shortly after graduation she worked in Manhattan for a prominent
American family when she felt the urge for adventure calling. Seeking to quench her thirst for adventure, she chose yachting and moved to Florida.

After working as an entry level stew aboard various yachts, Skye would help by assisting in the galley watching the chef’s prepare 5-star meals for guests. Using this platform to work as an apprentice in the Galley, her culinary Chef career began. Skye loves what she does today pouring her heart and soul into every meal from breakfast to dinner! Skye’s great culinary expertise aboard SPIRIT is one that all charter guests will enjoy during their time aboard. Nick Brown:

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

High season $65,000/week
