About Yacht Rock Revue

Yacht Rock Revue is an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2007. The band was formed by members of the now defunct indie rock band Y-O-U after an ironic performance of soft rock hits at a local club gig took off into a weekly residence. Performing primarily covers, the band's set list is centered around a genre called "yacht rock", coined by the early 2000s web series of the same name, consisting primarily of soft rock from the 1970s and 1980s, but at times including songs as recent as the early 1990s. Although the Yacht Rock Revue started as a side project, it is now the main focus for all seven band members: Peter Olson, Nicholas Niespodziani, Mark Cobb, Greg Lee, Mark Bencuya, Mark Dannells, and David Freeman. The band has a contract with Live Nation and tours nationally, playing more than 100 shows a year and selling out theaters in Los Angeles, Boston, Atlanta, and Washington DC. In order to keep up with demand, a subsidiary band was launched in 2009 called Yacht Rock Schooner. In 2015, two of the founding band members, Peter Olson and Nicholas Niespodziani, opened Venkman's, a restaurant and music venue in Atlanta's Old 4th Ward neighborhood. In 2018, Jawbone Press released The Yacht Rock Book: The Oral History of the Soft, Smooth Sounds of the 70s and 80s by author Greg Prato, which explored the entire history of the genre. The book featured an interview with Niespodziani, as well as Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, and John Oates, among others. In fall 2019, the band released their first original single, "Step". Further, they announced their first album of original material, Hot Dads in Tight Jeans. The album was released on February 21, 2020.

Acclaimed cover band Yacht Rock Revue will be embarking on a mammoth 21-date tour across America taking place in 2023. Their Reverse Sunset Tour kicks off May 12th in Birmingham and stretches into September making additional stops in Orlando, Philadelphia, New York, Denver, San Diego and Phoenix. The new outing follows up 2021's Hot Dads in Tight Jeans Tour which continued into 2022.

Yacht Rock Revue will continue performing their own renditions of soft rock hits of the 70’s and 80's from acts like Hall & Oates , Michael McDonald and Steely Dan . Since forming in 2007, they've shared the stage with John Oates , Eddie Money , Little River Band , Pablo Cruise , Starship , Denny Laine , Robbie Dupree , Elliot Lurie , Peter Beckett and Bill Champlin among many others. The 7-piece band currently consists of members Peter Olson, Nicholas Niespodziani, Mark Cobb, Greg Lee, Mark Bencuya, Mark Dannells, and David Freeman.

If you love ’70s and early ’80s tunes from artists like Toto, Christopher Cross, America, Ambrosia and Bread, you’ll want to buy a ticket to the Portland Yacht Rock Festival.

The show is on Friday at Aura.

Yacht Rock is the tongue-in-cheek name given to soft-rock music that is loosely associated with southern California and boating. Mostly, it’s comprised of hit songs that you won’t bang your head to but will certainly sing along with. Best of luck with the those high notes in the refrain of Toto’s “Africa.”

Aura general manager Mark Curdo is a gigantic Yacht Rock fan, and the first planning meeting about the show took place at Three Dollar Dewey’s in January.

Curdo, with the help of guitarist Max Cantlin (Gina and the Red Eye Flight Crew, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Micromasse), assembled an all-star cast of 14 local musicians to perform a slew of classic Yacht Rock songs on Friday night. Advertisement

“I’ve been a fan of light and easy listening rock my whole life,” Curdo said. “Whether people think Yacht Rock is cheesy or not, at the end of the day, this stuff is well done and the musicianship is ridiculous.”

The idea for the Yacht Rock show has been mapped out in Curdo’s head for a few years. “I wanted to have a few lead singers, I knew certain ones could hit certain notes, and I actually had the whole set list.”

It includes hits like “Reminiscing” by Little River Band, “Ventura Highway” by America, “Midnight at the Oasis” by Maria Muldaur, “Eye In The Sky” by The Alan Parsons Project and “On and On” by Stephen Bishop.

Lead vocal duties will be shared among Don Campbell, Gina Alibrio, Owen Conforte and Kris Rodgers. There will also be a couple of guest vocalists taking the stage.

The band is led by Cantlin and includes Tyler Quist on bass, Chris Sweet on drums, Emma Stanley on trumpet and flugelhorn and Kate Beever on percussion, among several others.

Boston-based singer-songwriter Bitch (Karen Mould) is performing a Saturday night show on Great Diamond Island, the home of their longtime friend Dini Lamot.

“I’m gonna bring my bass and my violin, sing songs and tell some stories, and it should be really intimate and sweet,” said Bitch (known as Karen only to their mother, according to  a 2022 interview.)

Face the Music: Tough subjects get upbeat treatment on ‘Bitchcraft’

The show will feature a number of songs from the 2022 album “Bitchcraft,” including “Easy Target,” which they wrote in the aftermath of the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, and the synth- and percussion-heavy breakup tune “Pages.”

The album was well-received, and Bitch enjoyed the boost after a several year hiatus from putting out music. “It gave me wind under my broomstick again. It has been a beautiful homecoming into being an artist again.”

They said they’ve also been writing new material. “I actually started laying a couple of songs down in the studio last month. There’s a new project on the horizon.”

Bitch has been performing a one-woman show since the release of “Bitchcraft” and was excited to share that it will have an off-Broadway run in New York City starting this winter.

In 2020, Yacht Rock Revue took a bold step forward with a shockingly tight, cool, and strange set of originals, “Hot Dads in Tight Jeans.” Now the band tops itself with a double LP concept album — part one is out now, part two comes Nov. 29 — about riding the ups and downs of life, love, and being in a beloved tribute act. It’s appropriately titled “Escape Artist.”

“On the most obvious level, ‘Escape Artist’ is what our band does, we provide an escape for people and I see that out in the crowd as they escape from whatever is going on in their life,” band leader Nicholas Niespodziani told the Herald. “But underneath that there’s a cliche, or expectation, about what a band like ours is supposed to be able to do.”

YRR has blown up a lot of those expectations. The band regularly headlines 3,500-seat venues — YYR plays Roadrunner on Sept. 22. In 2023, it opened up for Kenny Loggins on his farewell tour and just wrapped a summer tour with Train and REO Speedwagon. The biggest hurdle has always been the idea that tribute acts just don’t make their own music.

“We’re trying to break out of that,” Niespodziani said. “I can’t separate out the artistic part of me. I can’t picture having gotten this far without trying to make our own music.”

The album’s song titles evoke classic yacht themes, see “Waves,” “Sail On,” “Tropical Illusion,” and the title track. But the lyrics have an introspection, an existentialism, that’s often missing from Toto songs — a couple gems are “All my time is my time is my time/I’m finding my shine/I might be losing my mind” and “Don’t rest on your laurels/We’re far from immortal/Every day is a new day.” The arrangements and production have as much in common with indie acts Animal Collective and the Flaming Lips as Boz Scaggs (so dreamy, so shimmery).

“My natural inclination is to write pop songs,” said Niespodziani, who wrote much of the album and produced all of it. “But my inclination on how to produce those songs tends more toward psychedelic pop or art pop. That’s my natural lane. But being in a yacht rock band for 17 years, those grooves and those chords and that mentality has seeped into my writing and my creativity into ways I can’t even quantify.”

In an odd twist, Niespodziani’s artistic approach has become more unique since becoming the leader of a cover band. And that hybrid of yacht and art, that incongruous mix of pop and angst, pushes “Escape Artist” to be a great album.

Now that YRR has three dozen original songs in its catalog, it needs to work harder to figure out how to get them to its audience. YYR has some hardcore fans but they probably won’t go home happy if they don’t hear two dozen expected hits at a show.

“It can be frustrating when the (original) songs don’t get listened to as much as we’d all like,” Niespodziani said.

The band is working on a music video, a live stream, and a whole bunch of other promotional tools to push the tracks on “Escape Artist.” While it seems unlikely anything on the record will become as beloved as “What A Fool Believes,” it seemed really unlikely a cover band would share the stage with Kenny Loggins, sell out a dozen national tours, and make a killer 21-track concept album.
