Classic feadship yacht ‘ice bear’ up for bid at boathouse auctions.

The Classic 1988 Feadship Ice Bear is up for bid with Boathouse Auctions. Well kitted out for ... [+] sportfishing, she is also a luxurious superyacht.

In 1988, a beautiful new Feadship yacht was built at the Dutch shipyard for Jim Moran. He named it Gallant Lady . Moran, an automotive entrepreneur, would go on to build scores of yachts, seven of which were Feadships. All of his Feadships shared the name Gallant Lady.

The fourth Feadship build in the Gallant Lady sequence, this particular edition gained not only length but also in detail far beyond her predecessors. Built with a relatively flat shear and raised bow to the main deck level, the most notable design detail would prove the vertical glass rimming the observation deck.

Ice Bear is a true sportfishing yacht, as illustrated by the two fixed fighting chairs backed up by ... [+] a gallery sofa for spectators, and a raising storage compartment behind the sofa to store and protect precious fishing rods and reels.

A Little History

Gallant Lady IV would later be renamed Ice Bear upon becoming the private yacht of Jim Scott, Jr., Chairman and CEO of construction and engineering firm Kiewit, and friend of Warren Buffet. Designed and built with all the expertise and craftsmanship expected of a Feadship, Ice Bear's classic design holds her own quite well with contemporary yachts.

Scott owned Ice Bear until his passing in September of 2021. Under his ownership, the yacht was exclusively used for private groups and was meticulously maintained, putting her in a class of her own with regard to condition.

The upper deck observation lounge on the Feadship Ice Bear offers great views, comfy seating, and a ... [+] great spot for social gathering.

Ice Bear By The Numbers

Built with a steel hull, an aluminum superstructure, and teak decking, Ice Bear measures 170.6 feet (52 meters) in length with a 30.5 foot (9.6 meter) beam, weighing in at 614 GT. Two 1,175 hp Caterpillar engines drive Ice Bear to a maximum speed of 15 knots with a cruising speed of 13 knots. A true trans-Atlantic traveler, Ice Bear has a range of 4,850 nautical miles.

Interiors were originally designed by Paola Smith and Jan Moran. Ice Bear's five spacious cabins accommodate 10 guests, with a full beam main deck master suite embracing a study, seating area, and generous windows. Four additional cabins on the lower deck, two doubles and two twins, are also designed with seating areas and en suite baths. Crew accommodations secure berths for 11.

Ice Bear's upper deck saloon beckons for a film or a casual gathering, with plentiful seating, a big ... [+] screen, and lots of windows.

A sky lounge gives guests a panoramic perch even while underway. The observation lounge on the upper deck offers another option for gathering protected by expansive glazing and graced with a wide angle view. The main deck dining area in the main saloon is served by a full galley with generous work spaces, double oven, grill, stovetop hobs, double sink, spacious refrigeration, and ample storage.

The bridge deck has a large seating area perfect for cinema viewing, a discreet and convenient day head, captain's quarters, and the wheelhouse. The wheelhouse, while serving as command center to the captain and crew, also accommodates guests with a pair of elevated sofas with high tables.

Two fighting chairs on the aft main deck make for exciting action. The raised sofa seating gives the ... [+] gallery of spectators a great view while keeping them safe.

On the main aft deck, two fighting chairs take the spotlight, with raised sofa seating in a pleasant curve for keeping the spectacle in view. Behind the sofa, a hydraulic storage space rises to reveal the prized fishing rods and reels. For other water activities, a 28-foot Shamrock sportfisher sits transversely atop the upper deck. An 18- foot RIB tender is also on board.

Auction Details

Currently scheduled for opening bids on October 10 at 4 pm EDT with an October 15 hammer drop, registration for bidding is through Boathouse Auctions . Registration requires a bid deposit of $100,000. Opening bids are predicted between $3-4 million.

Inside the shocking Sicily yacht tragedy that left 7 people dead

There was a violent storm, but even then, luxury yachts are built to weather such events. so why did this boat sink off the coast of sicily, leaving seven people dead, by natalie finn | e news • published august 24, 2024 • updated on august 24, 2024 at 7:34 am.

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht may contain safes with highly classified intelligence inside: reports

  • Italian authorities have requested heightened security around Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht.
  • Watertight safes on board the Bayesian may hold sensitive intelligence data, sources told CNN.
  • The $40 million yacht sank last month in a storm, killing Lynch and six others.

Insider Today

Italian authorities have requested heightened security around Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht, over fears that safes on board contain highly sensitive intelligence data, according to reports.

The Bayesian sank during a fierce storm off the coast of Sicily a month ago, killing seven, including British tech tycoon Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter, and other passengers and crew. Fifteen people survived.

Since the shocking accident, Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into the conduct of the yacht's captain.

Meanwhile, specialist divers have requested additional protection to guard the vessel over concerns that watertight safes on board may hold sensitive data tied to Western intelligence services, CNN reported .

Italian media first reported the possibility that sensitive data was on board last week.

Initially, authorities feared the vessel would be looted for jewelry and other valuables on board, unnamed divers from the local fire brigade told CNN.

However, it's now believed that the safes contain two super-encrypted hard drives, the outlet reported, citing an unnamed official involved with the salvage operation.

The security request includes both surface and underwater surveillance, officials told CNN.

A source with the Italian prosecutor's office told CNN that survivors said Lynch "did not trust cloud services" and always kept data on locked-away hard drives when he sailed.

Officials believe the information on the hard drives could be of interest to both the Russian and Chinese governments, divers told the outlet.

Related stories

Lynch had ties to intelligence services through companies such as Darktrace, a cybersecurity startup .

Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, who survived the incident, was also an advisor to two successive British prime ministers on matters of technology and cybersecurity, CNN reported.

The Bayesian, which is now 164 feet underwater, is believed to have taken 16 minutes to go down .

Italian media and Reuters reported that Lynch , along with a further four victims , likely suffocated inside the stricken vessel.

The gathering on board the $40 million vessel was to celebrate the end of a lengthy legal battle that saw the tech tycoon acquitted of all counts in a criminal case in which he was accused of lying about the value of one of his companies, Autonomy, during its sale to Hewlett Packard.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise confirmed in early September that it will continue to pursue its $4 billion case against Lynch's estate.

Boatbuilder behind Mike Lynch’s doomed yacht Bayesian ‘seeking £186m for damaged reputation from widow & surviving crew’

THE boatbuilder behind Mike Lynch's ill-fated superyacht is seeking £186m from his widow and surviving crew after the tragic sinking.

Manufacturer Italian Sea Group (TISG) is alleging it has faced reputational damage after the superyacht sank off Sicily last month.

The Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month killing seven

But a close friend of the Lynch family has fired back saying the company should be "ashamed" and its CEO is a "disgrace".

Billionaire businessman Lynch and his daughter Hannah died on board the doomed 56m yacht along with five others on August 19.

Lawyers for the manufacturer have now launched a civil claim to try and claw back losses they allege were caused by the sinking, La Nazione reported.

A close friend of the Lynch family fired back at the claim, lambasting TISG's CEO.

The claim directly calls into question the actions of Captain James Cutfield and other crew saying it was human error, not design issues, which led to the sinking.

It also reportedly names the yacht management company and its owner, which in turn is owned by Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

They say Cutfield underestimated weather conditions and did not anchor the boat in a safe place or prepare it to battle rough waves.

An expert report, they claim, will demonstrate the keel was not lowered and that the rear and side doors were left open.

The watertight doors that separate the dinghy garage from the engine room were also not closed.

TISG said it has lost business do to the sinking as it was in negotiations to sell three yachts which had already been completed.

CCTV cameras caught the boat moments before it sank

It also claimed a "well-known European fashion house" suddenly became disinterested in building a line of boats and an investment fund had backed out of negotiations.

Media reports show TISG is partially owned by and has been collaborating on yachts with Giorgio Armani.

The Bayesian sinking also saw the prospective buyers walk away causing a loss of earnings, they allege.

Within hours of the sinking, before all of the bodies were recovered, TISG’s chief executive, Giovanni Costantino, publicly blamed the crew saying the boat was “unsinkable”.

He told a local newspaper: “Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors.

“The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor.”

Giovanni Costantino CEO said the boat was 'unsinkable'

Bizarrely, TISG told media its lawyer had not been "authorised" to pursue the claim in court and they had been instructed to remove it.

The company said: “The Italian Sea Group … strongly denies the claims published in La Nazione regarding a legal action following the Bayesian tragedy.

"Although TISG has given a generic mandate to the lawyers named in the article, no legal representative of the company has examined, signed or authorised any writ of summons.”

The captain of the doomed Bayesian,  James Cutfield, 51, is being investigated for manslaughter .

Prosecutors are also probing ship engineer  Tim Parker-Eaton, from Clophill, Beds, and sailor Matthew Griffith, 22  under the same charges.

The yacht was sunk by a freak "Black Swan" waterspout which would have appeared without warning, maritime experts believe.

The yacht's 264ft tall mast was hammered by a water tornado as storms battered the Porticello Harbour causing it to sink within minutes.

Divers have recovered surveillance equipment and the ship's on board hard drives from the yacht

The superyacht pictured before it sank

They hope data from them will be able to shed light on why the Bayesian sank, but there are worries they will to too waterlogged to retrieve it.

The 184 ft Bayesian was carrying 22 people when it sank within minutes of being hit by a downburst - a strong, localised wind - while anchored in Porticello near Palermo.

The luxury vessel was caught up in a tornado which caused it to sink in the early hours of the morning.

Fifteen of those on board were rescued on a life raft, while the yacht’s cook Recaldo Thomas was discovered dead in the water shortly afterwards.

Specialist divers recovered the bodies of billionaire Lynch, 59, and four of his guests, from the first cabin on the left.

Officials said the victims had scrambled to reach air pockets in the yacht, which sank 164ft stern-first before rolling onto its right side on the seabed.

Investigators are understood to be rifling through CCTV footage and photographs taken by locals on the night of the storm to understand why the boat sank so quickly.

Chief Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the victims would have been asleep when a tornado-like waterspout struck the boat, leaving them unable to escape.

Lynch had just won a court case over the sale of Autonomy to tech giant HP after being accused of fraudulently raising the price.

The 59-year-old had been living under house arrest in San Francisco, US, with just his beloved dog Faucet for company, for well over a year.

He was finally acquitted just months ago and spoke about longing to spend time with his wife, Angela Bacares and their two daughters.

In 1996, he started software company Autonomy, which would be used to analyse huge swathes of data from unstructured sources like phone calls, emails and videos.

Describing his small team he said: “Eccentric people working really hard on a project. No bureaucracy. No admin. Lots of late nights, lots of eating cold pizza”.

Inside The Bayesian's final 16 minutes

By Ellie Doughty, Foreign News Reporter

Data recovered from the Bayesian's Automatic Identification System (AIS) breaks down exactly how it sank in a painful minute-by-minute timeline.

At 3.50am on Monday August 19 the Bayesian began to shake "dangerously" during a fierce storm, Italian outlet  Corriere  revealed.

Just minutes later at 3.59am the boat's anchor gave way, with a source saying the data showed there was "no anchor left to hold".

After the ferocious weather ripped away the boat's mooring it was dragged some 358 metres through the water.

By 4am it had began to take on water and was plunged into a blackout, indicating that the waves had reached its generator or even engine room.

At 4.05am the  Bayesian fully disappeared  underneath the waves.

An emergency GPS signal was finally emitted at 4.06am to the coastguard station in Bari, a city nearby, alerting them that the vessel had sunk.

Early reports suggested the disaster struck around 5am local time off the coast of Porticello Harbour in Palermo, Sicily.

The new data pulled from the boat's AIS appears to suggest it happened an hour earlier at around 4am.

Some 15 of the 22 onboard were rescued, 11 of them scrambling onto an inflatable life raft that sprung up on the deck.

A smaller nearby boat - named Sir Robert Baden Powell - then helped take those people to shore.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Below deck sailing yacht season 5’s daisy kelliher has changed (is she having a breakdown), why lack of producer interference might get below deck sailing yacht season 5 canceled (they let gary king's bad behavior slide).

With Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 on the horizon, Gary King may have been invited onto the crew as a producer plant. Gary debuted on the series during the show’s second season as Captain Glenn Shephard’s First Officer after Paget Berry left season 1 . After his first appearance, he earned the label of a playboy on the sailing yacht. Gary hooked up with many women during season 2 and carried this behavior into each subsequent season he’s been a part of. Fans thought his actions were creepy and problematic , though he was never fired.

After starring on Below Deck Sailing Yacht in season 4, Gary was accused of sexual misconduct by a former makeup artist who worked on the series. The allegations made headlines, though production notably didn’t fire him from the show. Even after the accusations were revealed, Gary returned for season 5 , though they weren’t the first time his behavior was questioned. The First Officer acted out numerous times across his many seasons on the show, hinting that he was brought back to the cast to act as a producer plant.

8 Gary Brought Up His Off-Screen Romance With Daisy On Camera

They vowed to keep their hook-up private.

In an attempt to cause drama on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, Gary revealed that he’d hooked up with Daisy Kelliher. The two yachties have worked alongside one another since season 2, though viewers were not aware of their romantic history with each other. When Daisy formed a boatmance with Colin Macrae, the yacht’s chief engineer, Gary grew jealous and revealed they had a past. The First Officer insisted that Daisy had feelings for him and was hooking up with Colin to get back at him while he was sleeping with Stew, Mads Herrera.

“Gary and I slept together when the season ended last year in Minorca, and we also slept together when we went to Disneyland.”

Instead of letting his friends carry on in their romantic relationship, Gary had to sabotage their connection by claiming Daisy wanted to be with him. The Chief Stew admitted she had feelings for both men but didn’t want to be “ one of [Gary’s] 10 million girlfriends ” and that he “ wouldn’t know a real connection if it slapped him in the face .” Daisy said she asked Gary to keep their hook-up to themselves away from the cameras, but he couldn’t resist creating a hectic reality TV moment. He sabotaged his friendship with Daisy for the show, which is further proof he could be a producer plant.

7 Gary Is Always Hooking Up With A New Woman Every Season

He’s had too many boatmances to count.

The First Officer has hooked up with many women during his time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht . Gary joined the crew of season 2 with a girlfriend at home but found no problem getting involved with not one but two women, Sydney Zaruba and Alli Dore, during the charter season. By the third season, he infamously hooked up with Ashley Marti and went on to flirt with Gabriela Barragan and Scarlett Bentley. During his most recent appearance on the show in season 4, he hooked up with Mads while admitting his feelings for Daisy amid her relationship with Colin. Gary may not be keen on monogamy, and that’s okay, but his behavior toward women isn’t. There were eyes on his behavior before the allegations came out, and now they’re at an all-time high.

6 Gary Inserts Himself In Drama

He’s attracted to the drama of it all.

Gary has been at the center of Below Deck Sailing Yacht ’s main conflict since season 2.

He appears to be drawn to drama and has never missed an opportunity to create conflict.

There was no need for Gary to reveal he’d hooked up with Daisy in season 4, especially if they agreed to keep their sexual past private. However, he couldn’t risk wasting the opportunity to assert his dominance and ensured the show’s main storyline centered around himself. Throughout season 4, Gary had an odd boatmance with Mads that rubbed many viewers the wrong way.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

They had an instant connection with each other and began hooking up at the beginning of the charter season. Despite their chemistry, Mads made it clear that she didn’t want a romantic relationship with the First Officer. When Gary realized she didn’t want to be his girlfriend, he blamed her and said she led him on. He got incredibly angry with her during one moment when Alex Propson said she was on her period. Gary attempted to confront Mads in front of Lucy Edmunds after he chatted with Alex and told her it was her obligation and “ common decency ” to tell him if she was having her period when he “ went down ” on her. He should have had that conversation with Mads privately but chose to embarrass her in front of other crew members because of his personal feelings.

5 Gary Doesn't Come Off As Genuine

There’s something off about his presence on the show.

There’s something about Gary that doesn’t come off as genuine. He’s portrayed as a happy-go-lucky womaneater on Below Deck , though he’s had some rough moments on the series as well. He notably gets upset on deck quite often and has been known to demean his crew. Overall, Gary’s lack of self-awareness makes him appear incredibly disingenuous.

After the sexual misconduct allegations came out, he doubled down on his actions and defended himself. Instead of defending himself, though, Gary should recognize that he hasn’t acted perfectly in the past and has shown signs of bad behavior which have led viewers to believe the allegations against him. If he showed some compassion — on and off Below Deck Sailing Yacht — it would be harder to believe he was a producer plant.

4 Gary Is The Most Talked About Cast Member

Gary has been all the talk since he was accused of sexual misconduct.

There’s no doubt Gary has emerged as the most talked about cast member from the Below Deck franchise in the past few years. Reality TV unfortunately rewards bad behavior a lot, and he’s been brought back to the show season after season because he is a controversial crew member . Even though he stirred up a lot of conflict in season 4, he was invited back for the show’s fifth season.

Gary was seemingly filming for season 5 before the accusations came out, resulting in him still being a part of the crew. However, the Rolling Stone article included a statement from Bravo and Below Deck ’s production company, 51 Minds Entertainment, proving they were made aware that the allegations were going to be publicized. The filming period for season 5 is unknown, but it's assumed Gary had finished filming the series before the article was published in August 2023.

3 Gary Likes To Stir The Pot Between Cast Members

He loves to create conflict.

Gary stirred the pot to no length in his love triangle with Daisy and Colin during season 4. There was no reason for him to break the Chief Stew’s trust and reveal they had been intimate other than to cause drama with the chief engineer. Gary’s jealousy overcame him, and he created a rough dynamic among the crew by admitting he had feelings for Daisy . He went as far as to claim she wanted him and was using Colin to get his attention. Putting his relations with Daisy aside, it wasn’t right for him to bring that information up to embarrass Colin. He was friends with everyone involved but didn’t care about their feelings when he brought that information to the cameras.

2 Gary Knows His Romantic Endeavors Are Of Interest For Viewers

He gives the viewers (and producers) what they want.

Since he joined the Below Deck universe, Gary was labeled the “Playboy” archetype. It was astonishing for him to hook up with his co-workers when he had a girlfriend in season 2. Gary enjoys attention from women and hasn’t been known to turn anyone down on the show. He invites the controversy that comes along with being the Playboy on his boats. Gary knew the viewers would be interested in his off-camera relationship with Daisy, which is likely why he brought it up on the show. He will stop at no cost to produce a shocking reality TV moment, which is another reason why he’s been a part of the Below Deck Sailing Yacht cast since season 2. Without him, the show would have had less drama over the years, which is likely in the franchise’s best interest.

1 Gary Seems Like A Different Person Off-Screen

Viewers may not know the “real gary”.

Whether Gary is a producer plant or not, he’s certainly formed a good relationship with the show. Every reality TV personality plays up for the cameras, though the First Officer takes his persona to the next level. Gary knows he’s the Playboy of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , and he plays that part to the best of his ability each season.

Viewers will likely never know what type of person he is off the show, but there’s a chance his behavior is much different off-screen than on-screen. With the news of the allegations and backlash surrounding his casting, Gary should retire from reality TV and focus on his life away from the Below Deck cameras. It would be refreshing to see a new First Officer step into his shoes and breathe new life into the spin-off.

After years of being on Below Deck Sailing Yacht , Gary could be a producer plant. His actions over the years have raised red flags with viewers and made some question his behavior. Gary will make his return to TV with season 5, though it certainly could be his last with the franchise.

Boat not to blame for beach drownings, coroner says

yacht n

A coroner has ruled out the involvement of a pleasure cruiser in the deaths of two young people who drowned at a seaside resort.

Joe Abbess, 17, from Southampton, and 12-year-old Sunnah Khan, from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, both died after getting into trouble in the water on 31 May last year.

Coroner Rachael Griffin said the Dorset Belle vessel was not a factor in the deaths.

A man in his 40s, arrested by Dorset Police on suspicion of manslaughter, will face no further action.

BUHALIS A helicopter landing on the beach near Bournemouth Pier

Ms Griffin told a pre-inquest review: "I have ruled out the involvement of the Dorset Belle and it being a causative and contributory factor in Joe and Sunnah's death.

"It would be speculative to link that boat to the deaths but also it's important that within the evidence there may be reference to previous incidents.

"There is no evidence that the boat was previously involved in previous incidents, again that is speculative to say it was."

The Dorset Belle ran trips from Bournemouth Pier and was impounded by police following the fatal incident.

The force said after it consulted an expert as part of its investigation, it had made the "evidence-based decision" that the movement of the Dorset Belle did not contribute to creating dangerous sea conditions.

'Tragic day'

A previous hearing was told that a rip current tide had led to the deaths of the two youngsters and eight other people were treated by paramedics on the day.

Dr Anton Van Dellen, representing Sunnah's family, told the hearing: "My client is very grateful to South West Ambulance Service for all their strenuous efforts they made to try to save their daughter's life, that is greatly appreciated."

Harriet Short, representing Joe's family, added: "Mrs Abbess wishes to record in open court her gratitude to the emergency services, South West Ambulance Service, the air ambulance and the RNLI, who attended for her son on that tragic day."

Ms Griffin said: "It's clear to me how many lives were affected that day from the incident that arose that day and led to the deaths of Joe and Sunnah."

The full inquest into their deaths is due to start on Tuesday.
