Schitterend zeiljacht van Jeff Bezos kiest ruime sop (video)

Het door het Nederlandse Oceanco gebouwde zeilschip waarvoor Jeff Bezos naar verluidt $500 miljoen betaalde, heeft haar eerste nautische mijlen gemaakt. En uiteraard cirkelden de botenspotters daar met hun camera’s omheen.

Zelden is er meer commotie geweest rond een in ons land gebouwd zeilschip, dan om het nieuwe varende speeltje van Jeff Bezos. Het gigantische ding paste namelijk niet onder een monumentale Rotterdamse brug. Die moest daar dus maar even voor wijken, zo was de aanvankelijke gedachte . Een gedachte die al snel overboord werd gezet, door te besluiten de drie masten pas later op de romp te plaatsen. Daar werd het project wel iets duurder van, maar ach, goedkoop is het project toch al nooit geweest. En weliswaar is Bezos niet langer de rijkste man op aarde, op de kleintjes hoeft hij nog altijd niet te letten .

Enfin, afgelopen week maakte het 127 meter lange schip, dat Bezos Koru zal dopen, op de Noordzee haar eerste proefvaart. Daarbij werden nog niet de zeilen gehesen, maar uit de beelden die Superyacht Times maakte valt al wel te concluderen dat het echt een plaatje is.

De Koru, een naam waarvoor Bezos inspiratie opdeed bij de Maori , is het langste schip dat ooit in Nederland werd gebouwd, en het op één na langste schip ter wereld dat zich door de wind kan laten voortstuwen. Ook het hulpschip, waarop bijvoorbeeld zijn helikopter kan landen, werd in Nederland besteld. Beelden daarvan hieronder.

The best pictures of Koru

In 2022, the 125.8-metre sailing yacht Koru made history when she hit the water at Oceanco ’s Alblasserdam facilities. Now successfully delivered, she is the flagship of the Oceanco fleet and the largest Dutch-built yacht in the world.

Koru unable to dock in Florida

Koru arrived at Port Everglades, Florida in November 2023 following a months-long Mediterranean cruise that included stopovers in Dubrovnik, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Calabria (according to BOATPro ). The sailing yacht was too large to anchor in the nearby marina, which has a maximum capacity of 121.9 metres. She was photographed instead docking next to a 297-metre cruise ship named Rhapsody of the Seas .

Last summer, Koru was spotted in the French Riveria alongside her 75-metre support vessel Abeona . Delivered by Damen Yachting two months before the mothership, Abeona is equipped with a helipad and hangar for a D14 value helicopter– which is clearly being put to good use. Accommodation is for up to 45 people onboard Bezos' support vessel, including crew, guests and other specialist staff.

Koru and Abeona also travelled to Portofino in the summer of 2023, with both Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez sighted enjoying lunch and taking photographs while on board.

Throughout construction, it was difficult to get a glimpse of the details on board Koru ; but once handed over, all of her traditional features could be admired up close. As well as the intricate gold paintwork and scarlet bootstripe, the yacht also features an elaborate figurehead made of polished wood. The woman is wearing a necklace with a symbol in the pendant, which some have speculated could be the Māori symbol meaning "koru".

After delivery, the schooner spent some time enjoying the waters of Mallorca. The Balearic hotspot is a magnet for superyachts during the Mediterranean season, but Koru had the quiet anchorage largely to herself after leaving the Oceanco shipyard. Her classic lines could be appreciated in all of their glory against the backdrop of Palma Cathedral.

In April 2023. Koru was delivered and undertook her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Gibraltar. She then headed onwards to Palma, giving the world a first glimpse of her cascading aft decks, mighty masts and elaborate aft deck pool arrangement. She was flying solo in Mallorca, but was later joined by support vessel Abeona .

Following her successful sea trials in Rotterdam, Koru embarked on journey to Palma, Mallorca that involved an overnight anchorage in Gibraltar. The sailing yacht was sighted passing through the Strait of Gibraltar a second time on her cross-continental journey from the Mediterranean to the USA in November 2023.

Koru was spotted departing from Rotterdam in the early morning light of February 13 to begin sea trials. The 125.8-metre Oceanco set sail across the North Sea to put her performance to the test after hitting the water for the first time in August 2022. The traditional three-masted schooner yacht has a midnight blue hull, traditional canoe stern and the unique addition of a chair at the very tip of the bowsprit. Her name represents the idea of life’s perpetual movement and is a Māori word closely related to that of an unfurling leaf.

The yacht was seen for the first time in her final form on the dock in the Port of Rotterdam. Her trio of masts was stepped here to avoid having to dismantle any bridges to allow the Oceanco giant yacht to pass under. The maximum height of the bridge is 70 metres; the masts on Koru are thought to measure between 65 and 85 metres. The first images of Koru indicate the yacht will have plenty of features for her owner to enjoy, including an aft deck pool and a large, uncluttered sundeck.

The 125.8-metre yacht was moved from Oceanco’s primary facilities at the crack of dawn to enter the final stages of construction. The hull was transported via Dordrecht and Spijkenisse (Oude Maas), and her masts were transported separately via the slightly shorter Rotterdam Centre (Nieuwe Maas).

Before she hit the water, the hull of Koru was loaded onto a transport vessel and she made the journey through the Dutch canals for further construction work. The yacht was captured against the backdrop of the quaint Dutch countryside, revealing her classic-looking lines and long rows of windows.

As she was wheeled out of the shed into the light of day, yacht-spotters were able to get their first proper aerial shot of the yacht, without her masts.

When Oceanco completed the work on the hull, the yacht was rolled out of the shed to reveal a crisp navy hull and white superstructure. Koru ’s exterior design immediately drew a comparison to Lürssen’s 93-metre sailing yacht Eos , which was designed by US-based Langan Design . This was the world’s first sighting of the already iconic superyacht.

The yacht has also been at the center of massive, worldwide controversy. Back in February 2022, Oceanco requested that a centuries-old bridge in the port city of Rotterdam be partially dismantled in order to get the behemoth out and onto the high seas. The masts, which are the same height as the Great Pyramid of Giza, simply exceeded the bridge’s 131-foot clearance and thus prevented Koru from passing under. Rotterdammers were none too pleased and threatened to pelt the yacht with rotten eggs . The request was subsequently denied, and the yacht was instead discreetly towed through Rotterdam without its mast.

The designers behind the yacht’s interior and exterior are yet to be named, but it’s clear that she’s a timeless and elegant cruiser. Koru , which is a Māori for “new beginnings,” features a sleek black hull and white superstructure. She also sports a large pool on the aft deck and a number of plush alfresco lounges.

The epic design isn’t able to accommodate a helicopter, however, as the soaring masts make it too unsafe to land. As a result, Bezos commissioned a second yacht to hold his toys and tenders. Christened Wingman, the custom 246-footer is Damen’s largest support vessel to date. It’s a good match for monumental Koru , then.

The 417-foot vessel was spotted Sunday floating at the Greenport shipyard in Rotterdam, Netherlands, with its three large masts in place. Dutch Yachting, a YouTube channel dedicated to Dutch-built vessels, posted video footage that gives us the closest look yet at Bezos' yacht.

It's one of the world's most impressive — and controversial — yachts

The massive yacht has been the subject of months of contention in the Netherlands.

In order to get the vessel from the shipyard to the open water, it needed to pass through Rotterdam and underneath the city's famous Koningshaven Bridge, known locally as De Hef. There was only one problem: Unlike many of his contemporaries' yachts , Bezos' ship is sail-assisted, which means it has three large masts, masts that were too tall to pass underneath the bridge,  despite its clearance of over 131 feet.

The shipbuilder, Oceanco, proposed temporarily removing the center portion of the bridge to allow the vessel to pass through, which angered locals who felt Bezos was throwing his weight — and $162 billion fortune — around to dismantle a local landmark. Residents organized an event on Facebook to throw rotten eggs at the yacht when it passed by.

Last month, Oceanco scrapped its request , citing fears of vandalism and employee harassment. The company decided instead to have the yacht towed up the river, sans masts, which it did last week in the early hours of the morning . 

Now, it seems that the yacht has been fully assembled and is one step closer to heading out to sea. 

The existence of Bezos' megayacht was  first reported in Brad Stone's book , "Amazon Unbound," in May 2021. Currently known only as Y721, the yacht is predicted to cost $500 million and is expected to be "one of the finest sailing yachts in existence," Stone reported.

Het nieuwe jacht van Jeff Bezos

Om precies te zijn: het is een superjacht van een half miljard, dat zo groot is dat er een ondersteunend jacht nodig is. Met een vermogen van 186 miljard ( BBI ) is dat natuurlijk maar een schijntje.

Het zou gaan om een jacht van 127 meter lang, 20 meter langer dat het model Black Pearl (foto), dat Oceano in 2018 bouwde. De driemaster wordt naar verluidt een van de mooiste zeiljachten ooit, maar veel details zijn nog niet bekend.

Het superjacht is volgens Bloomberg slechts een deel van de order. Ook zou Jeff Bezos namelijk een ondersteunend jacht hebben gekocht, met een helikopterplatform. Wel zo handig, te weten dat zijn nieuwe vriendin Lauren Sánchez helikopterpiloot is en ‘s werelds een na rijkste man zelf ook lessen volgt.

Oceanco zit gevestigd in Alblasserdam, waar de jachten worden gebouwd. De sales en marketing gebeurt vanuit Monaco. Volgens verschillende media is de nieuwe boot van Jeff Bezos een volledig nieuw model, die je nog niet op de website terugvindt.

We houden overigens nog even een slag om de arm. Niet dat Jeff Bezos het jacht niet kan betalen, maar er wordt vaker foutief gesuggereerd dat een bekende miljardair een nieuwe boot heeft aangeschaft. Daar kan Bill Gates over meepraten, die volgens The Guardian dit superjacht op waterstof had gekocht. Dat bleek dus niet zo te zijn. Ook kwaliteitsmedia zitten er wel eens naast.

Jeff Bezos ’s yacht was quietly towed out of a Dutch shipyard this week, German magazine Der Spiegel reports . The ship previously attracted boatloads of controversy after its manufacturer asked the city of Rotterdam to dismantle a historic bridge to let it through.

The yachting firm, Oceanco, eventually withdrew the request, and hauled the Amazon billionaire’s 417-foot vessel to the Greenport shipyard early Tuesday morning, taking a more obscure route outside the city center that didn’t require passing under the bridge in question.

Hanco Bol, a local yachting enthusiast, spotted the transport in progress around 3am and posted a detailed video of the three-hour journey on YouTube.

He speculated that the alternate route was chosen “to keep the launch and transport under wraps”.

"We never saw a transport going that fast," he wrote in the caption of his YouTube video

The Independent has contacted Oceanco for comment.

The yacht, dubbed Y721 and reportedly worth $500m, may have left its original docking in Alblasserdam, Netherlands, but it leaves a checkered reputation behind.

The project came in for a storm of criticism when the shipbuilder asked Rotterdam in February to temporarily take apart the Koningshaven Bridge, a nearly 100-year-old local landmark, to allow the massive, three-mast vessel to pass underneath it.

“There’s a principle at stake,” Stefan Lewis, a former City Council member, told The New York Times , describing the outrage from Rotterdammers. “What can you buy if you have unlimited cash? Can you bend every rule? Can you take apart monuments?”

Locals even planned to egg the yacht as it sailed to its next port.

In July, the Dutch newspaper Trouw reported that Oceanco withdrew its request to dismantle the bridge

"As a result of the reports, shipyard employees feel threatened and the company fears vandalism," Trouw reported, according to public records it uncovered.

Mr Bezos has positioned himself as a leading climate philanthropist, and plans to give away $10bn through his Bezos Earth Fund, but he also lives an extremely high-carbon lifestyle.

The former Amazon CEO is one of the biggest landholders in the US .

Superyachts like the Y721 emit about 1,500 times more carbon than a typical family car per year.

Jeff Bezos: Ist das die 500 Millionen Dollar teure Mega-Yacht des Amazon-Gründers?

Die Segelyacht von Jeff Bezos nähert sich offenbar ihrer Fertigstellung – das 500 Millionen Dollar teure Schiff wurde in den Niederlanden gesichtet und sorgt dort für Schlagzeilen.  

Macht Jeff Bezos vor gar nichts mehr halt? Anscheinend doch: Eine historische Brücke in Rotterdam, die extra für die Passage des Schiffs abgebaut werden sollte, wird wohl doch nicht weichen. Wie die riesige Superyacht ins offene Meer gelangen soll, ist derzeit unklar – der Antrag, den Mittelteil der fast 100 Jahre alten Koningshaven-Brücke dafür abzubauen, ist jedenfalls erstmal gescheitert. Die Kosten wollten Bezos und der Schiffbauer übernehmen, nun müssen sie sich offenbar einen anderen Weg ins offene Meer suchen.

Ganz reibungslos geht der Stapellauf der 2018 in Auftrag gegebenen Superyacht des Amazon-Gründers also bereits im Vorfeld nicht vonstatten. Bezos wartet bereits seit vier Jahren auf sein schickes Spielzeug für den zweitreichsten Menschen der Welt, das angeblich 500 Millionen Dollar kostet und einen Weltrekord nach dem anderen bricht.

Jeff Bezos’ Mega-Yacht „Y721“ ist rekordverdächtig

Das Schiff mit dem Namen „Y721“ wird vom niederländischen Hersteller Oceanco nach Maß entworfen und wurde letzte Woche in einer Werft in Zwijndrecht, einer Stadt im Westen der Niederlande, gesichtet. Berichten zufolge ist es auf dem Weg zur Endmontage im niederländischen Alblasserdam. Mit einer Länge von 127 Metern ist die „Y721“ die größte Segelyacht der Welt und das längste Privatschiff , das in den Niederlanden je gebaut wurde. Zu ihren Merkmalen gehören ein schwarzer Rumpf, eine klassische Form, drei große Decks und drei Masten.

Die Superyacht „Bravo Eugenia“, die dem US-Milliardär und Besitzer der Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, gehört, wurde von Oceanco gebaut, das auch hinter Bezos’ neuem Riesenschiff steht.

Die „Y721“ wird mit ihrem Design  die Welt des Yachtsports völlig verändern, meint Fernando Nicholson, Makler für Luxusyachten bei der Yachtfirma Camper & Nicholsons: „Das ist ein Schiff mit der neuesten Technologie und einem Schnickschnack, den man so noch nie gesehen hat“, sagt er. „Sie wird der Standard sein, dem alle Superyachten folgen werden, wenn in den kommenden Jahren ihre Funktionen etwas erschwinglicher werden. Im Moment kann nur jemand mit dem Reichtum von Bezos die derartige Kosten bewältigen.“

Die Superyacht soll der berühmtesten Yacht von Oceanco, der „Black Pearl“ , nachempfunden sein, von der es auf der Website des Unternehmens heißt, sie sei eine der größten Segelyachten der Welt – und zumindest im Fahrbetrieb sogar halbwegs nachhaltig: „Sie kann den Atlantik überqueren, ohne auch nur einen Liter fossilen Brennstoff zu verbrauchen.“ Die „Y721“ wird nach ihrer Ausstattung in Alblasserdam auf See getestet und soll irgendwann im nächsten Jahr fertig sein.

Zur segelyacht des amazon-gründers gehört auch ein hilfsschiff.

Es ist jedoch nur eines von zwei neuen Schiffen für Bezos: Er hat nämlich ein weiteres Schiff namens „YS 7512“ beim Hersteller Damen Yachts in Auftrag gegeben. Dieses Hilfsschiff ist 75 Meter lang und bietet Platz für 45 zusätzliche Mitarbeiter und Gäste. Es wird auch über einen Hubschrauberlandeplatz und einen Tagungsraum verfügen und eine Menge Stauraum für Bezos’ unendlich viele Wasserspielzeuge bieten, darunter Tauch- und Schnorchelausrüstungen, Jet- und Wasserskis, Wasserrutschen und Surfbretter etc. „Schattenschiffe“ wie dieses sind ein wachsendes Phänomen in der Superyacht-Industrie und ein weiteres Spielzeug, das die Eigner gerne zur Hand haben, sagt Nicholson: „Man sieht sie jetzt immer häufiger als Zusatz zum Kauf einer Superyacht“, sagt er.

Ab 2022 wird Jeff Bezos also neben dem Weltraum auch die Ozeane erobern und über die Weltmeere segeln. Auch ein Weg, sein Geld auszugeben, wenn man mehr davon hat, als irgendjemand sonst.

Die Millionen-Yacht von Amazon-Gründer Jeff Bezos hat seine ursprüngliche Werft verlassen. Zuerst berichtete der „Spiegel“. Im Morgengrauen wurde die Yacht mit dem Namen „Y7212“ durch die Kanäle in Rotterdam zu einer neuen Werft gezogen.

Die Holzbrücke, deren möglicher Abbau heftig diskutiert wurde, weil das Schiff zu hoch war, um darunter durchzufahren, wurde jedoch nicht passiert. Rotterdamer hatten angekündigt, Eier auf das Schiff zu werfen, sollte die Brücke für Bezos abgebaut werden.

Gefilmt wurde die Verlegung von einem Yachten-Fan, der ein Video auf Youtube teilte.

Vor rund einem halben Jahr gab es heftige Diskussion um die Yacht, denn für das Auslaufen mit Masten stand eine historische Holzbrücke im Weg. Im Raum stand damals, dass die Brücke übergangsweise abgebaut werden könnte, sodass die Yacht hindurchfahren könnte. Rotterdamer Bürgerinnen und Bürger kündigten an, die Yacht des Milliardärs mit Eiern bewerfen zu wollen, sollte die Brücke tatsächlich abgebaut werden.

Historische Holzbrücke wird umfahren

Die Brücke wurde für die Verlegung von Bezos Yacht nun nicht abgebaut – sondern umfahren. Zu hoch wäre das Schiff aber auch nicht gewesen, denn die Masten waren noch nicht aufgestellt. Anscheinend sollten Bilder, wie die Yacht unter der Brücke herfährt, trotzdem vermieden werden.

Der Yachten-Fan, der das Schiff bei seiner ersten Fahrt filmte, sagte dem „Spiegel“: „Es ist eine spektakuläre Yacht wegen des Bugspriets. Es ist riesig.“ Während des Filmens habe man versucht, ihn mit Scheinwerfern zu blenden und vom Filmen abzuhalten.

La rumeur enflait depuis le printemps dernier, c’est désormais confirmé : Jeff Bezos s’est fait construire un yacht à voile de 127 mètres de long. Il s’agirait de l’un des plus grands et des plus luxueux au monde, selon Bloomberg . Le trois-mâts à un demi-milliard de dollars a quitté son chantier naval d’Alblasserdam, aux Pays-Bas , et sera livré à son futur propriétaire une fois les derniers réglages terminés.

Forbes a révélé quelques détails au sujet de ce projet qui devait rester secret. On sait que le deuxième homme le plus riche du monde a passé commande auprès du constructeur néerlandais Oceanco, qui avait déjà conçu le Black Pearl, un superyacht de 106 mètres de long nommé d’après le célèbre bateau pirate.

Fait intéressant : Jeff Bezos ne compte pas acheter un seul navire, mais toute une flotte, ce qui laisse planer le mystère sur l'usage qu'il en fera. Si l’on pensait au départ que c'était pour son plaisir personnel, il semblerait qu'il ait finalement un projet plus grand en tête. Un projet critiqué

Les Pays-Bas abritant de nombreux chantiers navals, il n’est pas rare de voir d’énormes navires se faufiler dans les canaux étroits du pays. Et pourtant, le projet de Jeff Bezos essuie de vives critiques à Rotterdam. En fait, son yacht est tellement haut qu’il ne passe pas sous le pont de Koningshavenbrug, le seul chemin qu’il puisse emprunter pour regagner la mer. Par conséquent, la municipalité va devoir démonter provisoirement ce monument auquel les habitants sont très attachés pour satisfaire les caprices du milliardaire. D’après la télévision publique néerlandaise BNNVARA , certains habitants de Rotterdam ont déjà prévu de jeter des œufs sur le yacht de Jeff Bezos lors de son passage dans le port l'été prochain.

Inscrit au patrimoine national néerlandais depuis 2000, cet ancien pont levant avait été achevé en 1927, avant d'être bombardé en 1940 pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Au début des années 1990, il avait été question de le détruire, mais les nombreuses protestations avaient fait tomber le projet à l’eau.

Billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has given a new children’s book written by his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez , the rarest of endorsements. “This is the best children’s book my fiancée has ever written,” gushed Bezos—who has posted just eight other reviews on Amazon over the years—giving it five stars. He captioned the title of the post “Six stars.” Sánchez, who has been publicly dating Bezos since 2019, has been busy promoting The Fly Who Flew to Space , which is designed to introduce children to concepts of space early on.
