There’s a $30 Million Dollar Superyacht ‘Toy Box’ Visiting Portland, Maine

Over the past several years, Portland, Maine , has become no stranger to visits from superyachts. Some of the most impressive private vessels in the world have come to the waters of Casco Bay, sometimes for a short visit and sometimes for a longer stay.

Nowadays, it takes more than a monster cruise ship or a massive superyacht to perk up residents of Portland. Which is why another unique ship has garnered some attention over the last couple days. It's a superyacht but it's different than many of the others that have visited in the past.

The Hodor is Visiting Portland, Maine

The Hodor is a superyacht shadow vessel, a garage of sorts. That's a nice way of saying that the billionaire that owns it, doesn't spend any significant time on it. According to SuperYachtFan , the Hodor was designed and built to be the ultimate "toy box" for someone with incredible wealth.

The Hodor has its own dedicated crew and several rather incredible features. But what is most noticeable immediately is all the expensive gadgets. Then most obvious of which is the certified helipad and helicopter on the yacht's top deck.

What Hodor Has Inside is Simply Incredible

When people refer to Hodor as a "toy box", they're not just making a joke. According to BOAT International , the superyacht houses some world-class toys inside. The Hodor features a submarine garage fitted perfectly for a real-life submarine for exploration use.

There's also nearly a dozen jet skis, several ATVs, and of course, another boat. Yes, a wildly expensive speedboat housed inside another boat. The inside of the Hodor almost looks as through it's owned by Bruce Wayne, ready to transform into Batman at a moments notice.

The Hodor is also fitted to be a rescue boat of sorts. The superyacht has a decompression chamber as well as a full triage station. It also had a dedicated fuel area in the event that a refill is needed.

Who Owns Hodor?

While superyacht owners typically try to keep their boat ownership secret, Hodor is unquestionably owned by Lorenzo Fertitta. He's the former CEO of the UFC and a well-established billionaire.

Hodor is meant simply as a support vessel for the Lonian , a $160 million dollar powerhouse. While Hodor is fit for all the toys, the Lonian is a nearly 300 foot superyacht designed purely for comfort and luxury.

The ultimate man cave? Inside 66m superyacht shadow boat Hodor

  • Superyachts

This cavernous support vessel can carry up to five tenders, as well as jet skis, quad bikes, helicopters and submarines

What do you do when your 87m Feadship can’t fit all your toys on board? Build a 66m shadow boat to carry them of course!

Launched this week by Spanish yard Astilleros Armón and designed by multihull specialist Incat Crowther, Hodor is the latest member of a growing global fleet of superyacht support vessels.

The owner clearly has a need for speed, as the pictures above show an impressive array of rapid toys, from a 56ft chase boat packing four Seven Marine outboards on the transom to what looks like a Fountain 32 Thundercat.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, however, as Hodor can also carry a further three tenders, a submarine and a Eurocopter 145, not to mention jet skis and quad bikes galore.

Hodor is no slouch either, with a top speed of 22.5 knots – enough to overtake the mothership so that the 20-strong crew can set up all the toys in the next secluded anchorage via the four built-in davits.

When the owner and his chums tire of charging around at top speed, they can explore underwater, as Hodor has a fully-equipped dive store, complete with Nitrox and O2 compression facilities.

A more fitting tribute to Game of Thrones’ humble giant, we can’t imagine…

VESSEL REVIEW | Hodor – Super yacht support vessel and reception space

VESSEL REVIEW | Hodor – Super yacht support vessel and reception space

Spain's Astilleros Armón has recently launched and delivered the 66-metre composite catamaran shadow vessel Hodor , designed by Incat Crowther.

Shadow vessels are a new breed of workboats. They are designed to blend in amongst super yachts with their smooth lines and gleaming chromed steel, however their purpose is to reduce crew numbers on the main yacht, allowing room for more guests, whilst also offloading other tasks that interfere with the enjoyment of being on a motor yacht.

Hodor offers large amounts of deck and storage space, flexibility, stability, efficiency and capability. The design offers a stable platform for the safe transfer of guests from helicopter to the mothership, via tenders.

Hodor allows for more luxury space to be available onboard the mothership while offering access to toys on demand. It also gives the crew a separate space to manage the operation and maintenance. The vessel can also act as a reception space for visiting guests, transferring them from helicopters to tenders.

Hodor has been completely customised to carry the specific equipment and supplies to support and enhance the owner's mothership capabilities. The design uses the robust engineering of hulls proven in offshore platform service, such as the Seacor "Crewzer"-class and Incat Crowther's 70-metre fast crewboat class. The hull incorporates a reverse bow, a deadweight capacity of 240 tonnes and a low propeller draught of 3.1 metres.

hodor yacht inside

The platform accommodates an astounding number of toys, facilities and personnel. This includes five tenders (the largest being 17 metres in length), jet skis, quad bikes, a submarine garage, a helipad, a large complement of crew, staff and support equipment.

hodor yacht inside

The tenders and submarine are flexibly located and can be launched from the upper and main decks. On the upper deck via the two large knuckle boom cranes, and on the main deck via twin beam cranes. A primary feature of the vessel is the the aft lifting platform for the 17-metre chase boat. A portable davit on the fore deck facilitates the launch and recovery of the vessels ROV and can also be used for additional jet ski storage.

The submarine garage is housed in the centre of Hodor . The launching system for this uses air casters to transfer it from the garage to the beam cranes for launching.

Incat Crowther has a number of vessels with fast launch and recovery systems – these existing proven systems were scaled up to the suitable size to allow the chase boat to be launched easily and quickly between the catamaran hulls.

hodor yacht inside

The helipad is a fully-certified and CAP437 compliant for helicopters of six tonnes and up to D-value of 16 metres including the Eurocopter EC145. A large reception room, finished to a yacht standard, sits forward of the helipad, allowing guests to be transferred in comfort between helicopters and tenders.

hodor yacht inside

Incat Crowther found that the catamaran platform lent itself well for helicopter support operations given the increased deck area, in particular the wide beam, and good level of stability.

The port hull shell door, provided for guest access is finished to a yacht standard and directly connected to the guest lounge via a guest staircase. The starboard hull shell door is reserved for crew operations. There is also water access via two stern platforms, should weather conditions require stern boarding.

hodor yacht inside

Dive equipment is fully integrated with compressors, nitrox and oxygen facilities, as well as a hospital with decompression chamber.

Specialised spaces are dedicated for fresh and frozen food storage, additional storage for the mother vessel, waste treatment and general and spares stores.

hodor yacht inside

Propulsion is provided by two main engines, giving a max speed of 22.5 knots, or long-range cruising at 14 knots up to 5,500 nautical miles. The catamaran platform allows fuel savings of around 40 per cent, affording the full vessel range with only 160,000 litres of diesel fuel. The vessel's tankage supplies toys and vehicles with jet fuel, petrol and diesel from dedicated bunker stations.

A complement of 20 crew and staff are comfortably accommodated in a mix of double and twin ILO-compliant staterooms, each with ensuite bathrooms.

hodor yacht inside

The wheelhouse is situated with excellent visibility. Access to electronics systems is simplified with incorporation of a walk-around main helm console and a dedicated MEC.

Fitted with an exhaust cleaning SCR system for IMO Tier 3 and EPA Tier 4 compliance, greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced, allowing the design to be more environmentally friendly.

The inherent stability of the catamaran does not require gyro or roll stabilisers whilst at rest. When underway, the vessel pitching motions are reduced by twin Humphree active interceptors on the stern.

A twin anchoring system is provided, which, combined with the widely spaced twin hulls, provides reduced motions whilst at anchor.

A new and highly sophisticated range of vessel

The “ Hodor ” joins a highly sophisticated new range of vessels , called “ shadow boats “, built to provide support for luxury yachts . Like the auxiliary vessels used by naval fleets to transport fuel, food, ammunition, medicine and spare parts, shadow boats are tasked with providing the most complete experience to passengers  on the yacht.

Shadow boats make it possible to complement the usual levels of luxury  on the mother ship with exciting extras  such as underwater exploration , helicopter trips  and outings   in a whole range of floating devices —from humble canoes to powerful water-skis, motor boats and even ATV vehicles. In this way, the shadow boat can act as a sort of floating toybox .

The first examplesv of this new breed of boat were developed in the 1990s , but early versions were more like unattractive floating warehouses. In recent years, however the trend has been to create a new type of mega-yacht , rivalling the mother ship in luxuryv and aesthetic appeal . There are currently only about twenty units in servicev around the world, but the numbers are growing and in the future, it is expected that most super yachts will boast their own support vessel. The “ Hodor ” is the first significant launch  of a Shadow Boat in the world using a Catamaran hull  (“Shadow Cat”),  which gives her a much greater volume. As well as housing a wide range of extra artefacts and means of transport, shadow boats also offer other benefits : they can provide space for fuel supplies , a repair workshop , waste storage  and additional security .

Launched in 2019 by Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armón, luxury support catamaran HODOR measures 66.2m/217ft and has plenty of onboard storage space for such additions as a submarine, decompression chamber, helideck and a range of tenders and motorised water toys. There is plenty of onboard storage space for such additions as a submarine, decompression chamber, helideck and a range of tenders and motorised water toys. The guest accommodation is currently unknown, however, there will be a crew of 17 on board to ensure that everything runs smoothly throughout the travels.

NOTABLE FEATURES OF HODOR: ~Upper deck Owner’s private lounge ~Scuba dive equipment and hospital with decompression chamber ~Extensive water toys selection ~Submarine ~Choice of 5 tenders ~Certified helipad with forward reception room ~Environmentally friendly with IMO Tier 3 and EPA Tier 4 compliance ~Twin anchoring system to reduce movement while at anchor ~Air conditioning ~Wi-Fi

Both hulls have a lower deck swim platform leading to the main deck, where a side passageway flows down both sides and the central area is semi-open for the launch and retrieval of water toys and land-based motorised vehicles.

Above, the upper deck exterior is slightly lower that the upper deck interiors, and there is plenty of space for storing water toys amidships. The stern section has a certified octagonal helipad with a forward reception area for fast, efficient and safe guest transfers. Both the helicopter and the water toys can draw from the fuel supply aboard S/Y HODOR to refill their own tanks.

On the lower decks, the port hull shell door opens up to reveal a beach club that connects directly to the main guest lounge via a staircase. The starboard hull shell door is reserved for crew operations.

The interior styling has a fresh and contemporary feel throughout, with white-painted walls and wooden panelling complemented by broad windows and eye-catching pops of colour in ochre and blue. The main salon is an excellent example of this laid-back styling, where guests will find a square 'formal' dining table to seat eight guests and a massive widescreen TV taking up the space on the nearby wall. A corner sofa curves away from the dining area and follows the wall to provide a comfortable open area and cosy nook for relaxing together or alone. The main deck aft has indoor/outdoor storage for water toys, with the amidships section dedicated to the guest and crew accommodation.

On the upper deck, the helm controls are placed forward and have excellent views of the surroundings. The Owner’s lounge is situated behind, with 180° views of the aft.

Why This 217-Foot Superyacht Is the Ultimate Oceangoing Adventure Craft

This crazy custom catamaran is tricked out with a helicopter, speedboats, Jet Skis, 4x4s, quad bikes, and even a submarine.

On occasions too numerous to mention we’ve seen how something that starts out as a side project often ends up being a much bigger deal. And such is the case with one of the coolest ocean crafts launched this year, the 217-foot Hodor .

hodor yacht inside

Built by Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armon, the catamaran started life as a support vessel—aka Shadow Cat—for the 285-ft. Feadship Lonian , which while an admittedly impressive piece of naval architecture, doesn’t especially have much to distinguish it from the next luxe superyacht . Hodor , however, is a different story, at once more avant-garde and menacing as well as a damn sight more fun.

hodor yacht inside

That’s down to Australian firm Incat Crowther, which went above and beyond its brief to create a custom floating toy chest for Lonian ’s owner and ended up building a vessel James Bond only wishes he had command of. Designed to serve the larger craft, it holds a helicopter, speedboats, tenders, Jet Skis, water toys, 4x4s, quad bikes and even a submarine for any sort of excursion on land or sea that Lonian ’s owner fancies.

The idea being that the mothership is free to devote every inch of deck space to sheer sybaritic cruising. However, Hodor , which shares a 20-man crew with Lonian, is far too cool to merely float along in another boat’s wake. Incat Crowther won’t disclose how many millions of dollars were spent on her, but judging from the vessel’s lethal looks, no expense was spared.

hodor yacht inside

Her helipad can can accommodate sizable choppers including as the stylish twin-engine, nine-passenger EC145, while SuperYacht Times reports that the largest craft she carries on board is a bespoke 56-ft. speedboat bristling with four high-performance Seven Marine outboard engines that can be launched and retrieved via a special hydraulic platform.

hodor yacht inside

Hodor is also home to a fully-equipped dive center as well as a high-tech floating hospital ward complete with a decompression chamber. And should some of Lonian ’s guests prefer to stay aboard, it has well-designed cabins, a guest lounge and a water-level balcony, as well. When going full-bore, the yacht can reach a maximum speed of 22.5 knots and cover its full 5,500-nautical-mile maximum range at a cruising speed of 14 knots courtesy of a twin engine setup.

In certifying Hodor ’s seaworthiness and general capability, marine surveyor Tom Corness of Patton Marine somewhat understated the case when he declared that “the quality of workmanship is exceptionally good for this commercial standard of vessel—it blends commercial and yacht standards perfectly to perform yacht support tasks.” There’s that word again.

And if you were wondering, the name Hodor appears to be a reference to a supporting character in Game of Thrones , a giant, immensely strong yet simpleminded servant of the Stark family, Winterfell’s ruling house. The sort of character, we’d hasten to point out, who is often underestimated until that crucial moment when push comes to shove. At which point you’d be well advised to get the hell out of the way.

The Mother of all Support Boats

By: Scott Way

hodor yacht inside

The 66 metre (216 foot) Hodor is not a standalone yacht. The fact that it's a support ship at 216 feet long is crazy enough, but it's her purpose that's even crazier.

The Hodor isn't meant for accommodating extra guests, or even to serve as a tender for shuttling its owners to the mainland. It is, strictly speaking, a toy chest. Let's hold the door open on her main deck and take a peak inside.

Hodor is based on an Incat Crowther all-aluminum 55 metre 'fast ferry' platform, but has been stretched by 11 metres and custom fitted to accommodate a veritable Pandora's box of powersports entertainment. She has no guest accommodations (although there is lodging for 17 crew), and she is designed entirely to transport a fleet of toys alongside her main ship. Incat Crowther is renowned for designing high-speed catamaran ferries, but the modifications to Hodor allow her to not only keep up with the main ship but also make the storage, maintenance, and use of superyacht toys as simple as possible.

In an interview with Boat International , first officer of Hodor Troy Eriksson said, “The idea was to get all the clutter off the mothership and on board a dedicated vessel – and the Incat Crowther catamaran platform provided the perfect answer.”

“The fact that the boat has two hulls and is based on a commercial vessel means there are huge load areas and storage spaces, so there was no need to restrict the quantity of toys we put on board. The owner just let us go ahead and fill it with cool stuff.”

Hodor doesn't look like a typical boat, either. Despite already being a massive catamaran designed to carry helicopters and off-road vehicles, she is also painted in stealth grey with an orange accent stripe. The various boats, choppers, and machinery on her deck may not belie her purpose, but at a distance it's not unthinkable to mistake her for a warship.

So what's on board?

Hodor support yacht

The garage below deck contains nine jet skis, four Yamaha ATV's, two Yamaha side-by-sides, four Yamaha motorcycles, two Laser dinghies, and a Hobie Cat. The area was also recently outfitted to take delivery of a Seamagine Aurora-3 submersible . To coincide with the sub's arrival, the ship also holds a dive room with oxygen and compressed air, a decompression chamber, and a triage centre with medical supplies.

The best stuff is up top, of course, where a 17 metre (55 foot) Nor-Tech 560 center console resides (fun fact- the boat and Hodor are showcased together on the Nor-Tech website). It also appears much of Hodor's top-deck engineering was done to accommodate the Nor-Tech, and the Incat Crowther design in particular proved the best platform for the job. Robert Smith of YCTS, the project manager responsible for Hodor's customization, told Boat International , “We looked at every other possible option, but the big issue was always the Nor-Tech – loading it on and off another boat is a very serious business that needs to be treated with respect. Incat Crowther’s existing catamaran design meant we didn’t have to reinvent the wheel, because it’s so big and stable that it allows such maneuvers to be carried out in safety.”

Dan Mace, the project's technical manager, added “We have a number of vessels with fast launch and recovery systems, which we simply scaled up to a suitable size to allow the chase boat to be launched easily and quickly between the catamaran hulls. The submarine garage is housed in the centre of Hodor , and its launching system uses air casters to locate from the garage to the beam cranes.”

But that's just the beginning of what's on deck. There is also a colour-matching fully composite Airbus H145 helicopter with a futuristic tail-shrouded rotor with seating for 10 passengers. There's a 7.3 metre (24 foot) Novurania catamaran RIB, a 16 metre (52 foot) Hydra-Sports 53 center console with quad Seven Marine 627 diesel outboard engines, a Nautique ski boat, and a truly wild 388 Skater offshore race boat capable of 190 mph.

As you might expect, all those toys don't leave much room for R&R, but that's not the purpose of Hodor . The ship has two lounge areas for guests, but there are no guest accommodations. For what it's worth, the lounges are well equipped with everything including a full bar, big screen TV's, custom laser-cut Corian panels, plush furnishings, and an ultra-modern design.

The crew has it pretty good, too, thanks in part to the natural layout of a catamaran design. The ship holds 17 crew while underway, and the pontoon layout on the 216 foot boat provides a spacious platform that allows the crew cabins to be oversized with full size bathrooms. There are also open concept communal areas that get natural sunlight from enormous side panel windows.

So who owns Hodor , and its main yacht, you might be wondering? While superyacht ownership is always shrouded in mystery and layers, there are several outlets claiming the boat belongs to Lorenzo Fertitta , a successful Las Vegas casino owner and the former CEO of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The Fertitta family owns the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas as well as Station Casinos, which have 21 locations across the United States. The Fertittas sold their share of the UFC to entertainment conglomerate WME-IMG in 2016 for a whopping $4 billion.

'Shadow yachts' are becoming more commonplace as billionaires commission ever-bigger superyachts requiring more support. Amazon's Jeff Bezos was just linked to a 417 foot $500 million superyacht that's currently in production that will also include a 246 foot support ship. There's no word if Bezos' yacht will have a boat, inside a boat, inside another boat, the way Hodor does, but one can probably assume it'll have a couple extra toys aboard.
