Motor Yacht

In 2008, Feadship launched the stylish and understated superyacht Archimedes. This 67.75 metre (222’3”) motor yacht was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and John Munford Designs and features proven high-end technologies that bring her from idyllic luxury yacht to global cruiser.

Rarely seen in the traditional superyacht destinations, her ice-strengthened Corinthian blue hull is often touring the world’s most far-flung locations. The desire to cruise the furthest reaches of the world introduced created a number of exterior areas for al fresco dining with a view.

On the large sundeck, guests can make the most of their time on board with a masterfully crafted marble mosaic Jacuzzi, bar and entertainment area, enclosed gym and lots of dining and social areas as you cruise the globe. The panoramic views are uninterrupted by tenders and toys on deck due to dedicated wells, lifts and large garage.

Her beam of 12 metres provides a large amount of space on board for a relaxed, yet sophisticated interior by John Munford Design. Battling the cavernous space on board, the interior remains welcoming with comfortable furniture and a grand piano in the main lounge. Archimedes is the first Feadship to feature a wood burning fireplace, reflecting the relaxed, stately nature of being on board.

The full-beam master bedroom is divided into various relaxation areas, consisting of large central bed and a lady’s writing desk which was handmade for the owner’s wife. The bathrooms draw inspiration from the titular Greek god and showcases artisan mosaic marble floors in all six ensuite staterooms, hosting space for eight guests on board.

Christened by 2008 her reasonably recent internal styling showcases the contemporary perceptions of the design work of John Munford.

ARCHIMEDES has a stunning blue hull and is every bit the megayacht. It is understood that her owner is American. Archimedes of Syracuse was one of the most brilliant minds of the ancient world and he was credited with the discovery that the buoyancy of an object is equal to the weight of the water it displaces, a founding principle in hydrodynamics.

The New Build & Design of Luxury Yacht ARCHIMEDES

The yacht's general design work came from De Voogt Naval Architects and John Munford. The technical naval architecture plans are the creation of De Voogt Naval Architects. Motor Yacht ARCHIMEDES received her stylish interior designing from the interior design skills of John Munford. Built by The Feadship Royal Van Lent Shipyard this vessel was constructed in the yacht producing country of the Netherlands. She was successfully launched in Kaag in 2008 before being handed over to the owner. A impressive feeling is achieved with a total beam (width) of 12.3 metres or 40.4 feet. With a 3.5m (11.6ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material steel was used in the building of the hull of the motor yacht. Her superstructure above deck is created out of aluminium.

M/Y ARCHIMEDES Engineering & Speed:

The yacht posseses twin robust CATERPILLAR main engine(s) and can find a impressive maximum limit speed underway of 16 knots. The main engine of the ship gives 2682 horse power (or 1492 kilowatts). Her total HP is 5364 HP and her total Kilowatts are 2984. Connected to her Caterpillar engine(s) are twin screw propellers (wartsila). As for the yacht’s stabalisers she utilises Naiad. As for thrusters she was built with Jastram / Stern: Veth. The boat’s impressive cruising speed is 12 knots which makes a range of 6000.

"Whether it’s wiring or plumbing, pipe fitting or painting, finishing or wiring, Feadship has the finest compilation of artists that I could find on my journey of discovery among the superyachts that exist today. Who owns that? $100M luxury yacht anchors in St. John's

The archimedes belongs to billionaire hedge fund manager, flies under bermuda flag.

A luxury yacht is turning heads on the St. John's waterfront.

The Archimedes arrived in the city Thursday and is replenishing supplies.

The so-called superyacht is a $100-million vessel owned by hedge fund manager James Simons, an American who went from being a math professor to the founder of Renaissance Technologies.

Online sources  describe the boat as 68 metres with room for a dozen guests in six cabins. There are 18 crew.

archimedes sailing yacht

Simons, who also owns a private jet, had an estimated net worth of $18 billion U.S in 2017, according to Forbes.

He's also a philanthropist, donating money to scientific research and to improve math programs in public schools.

In 2014,  The New York Times  did a profile piece on the "billionaire mathematician," which stated the man leads a life of "ferocious curiosity."

It's not known if Simons, 79, is aboard the Archimedes, which is not believed to be available for charter. He shuns the limelight and rarely gives interviews.

About Archimedes

In the first ten years after her launch in 2008 Archimedes covered 200,000+ nautical miles, including a record 54 days in the High Arctic (more on which here . The refit she received at Feadship in 2018 covered the LRS 10-year Special Survey and future-proofed her systems for another decade of adventures. It included new AV facilities, fresh teak for the stern platform, painting the sun deck interior floor and a rebuild of the crew mess. Maintenance was carried out on the shaft line, engine supports, gangway, side hull door, tender lift, stern platform door, seawater cooling systems and stabilisers. Parts of the superstructure were repainted and a new antifouling system added, while the generator, heating & air-conditioning, watermaker and fuel oil separator were upgraded.

“ The project was finished on time and on budget ,” says Captain Christopher Walsh. “ This is exactly what one expects from Feadship but not something captains take for granted when carrying out refits without Feadship’s involvement. It was a pleasure to bring Archimedes home .”

The CNB 87' ARCHIMEDES is a large luxury sailing yacht, delivered in 1990.

Design by the famous naval architect German Frers, built in aluminium by the French superyacht builder CNB to a spacious and luxurious interior, she was refitted in 2016 and 2022. A sophisticated interior in teak wood has large windows allowing daylight to abundantly flood in.

She comfortably accommodates up to 6 guests in 3 en-suite staterooms. Space for 4 crew members in 2 twin cabins and 1 bathroom aft.

The splendid deck areas aboard this CNB 87 ketch-rigged sailing yacht provide ample room for sunbathing, al fresco dining and relaxation.

Sailing on engine, power comes from a Mercedes 280Hp diesel engine and reaches top speed of 11 knots. With 365m2 sail area, performance under sails is also remarkable.

Although the yacht was built to Bureau Veritas rules, she is now a private sailboat, perfect for long range cruising and charter as well, very well maintained by permanent crew.

Bluewater Icon: Amel 60

  • September 22nd, 2024
  • Sailing Yacht

From the „fresh“ feelgood-boat RM 1380 let´s stick a bit within the „extraordinary boat“-category for the next Cannes Yachting Festival boat I´d like to show you. It´s a big one: Amel 60. For me and many others, the brand Amel is simply synonymous with a French-style world cruising approach. Amel has over decades built up itself a renowned image of making luxurious oceanic cruising yachts. The small shipyard in La Rochelle maintains a fair share in this market since ist inception in 1962 by unforgotten Henri Amel and is since then attracting, let´s say, not the ordinary sailor.

archimedes sailing yacht

This image is well earned and still apparent. Thinking of the iconic Super Maramu for example, this ketch-rigged 60-footer is for many people still the one Amel they have in mind when hearing the brand´s name. When roaming the pontoons in any French marina there is seldom a harbor without its Super Maramu moored. So, checking out the Amel 60 here at the Croisette for me is a obligatory act, if you will.

A bold step

I still remember very vividly how the sailing community was literally in shock back in 2015/16 when the company released their then brand new Amel 50. They literally severed all connections to their so beloved ketch-rigged predecessors and came up with a really groundbreaking new iconing design. The naval architects and desiners of Berret-Racoupeau had fulfilled not only their design briefing but also launched no less than a revolution for the company.

archimedes sailing yacht

The new yachts were everything the old Amel wasn´t: A very modern appearance, edgy, almost futuristic and bold. No ketch rigg anymore. By now we see many more yachts sporting this clean, straight and edgy design – but back then, I still remember – it was unseen. Now, almost 10 years later, the design has grown on people. It´s accepted and just not as polarizing anymore than it was back then. The boat is in ist prime: Refined, optimized and full of little things which got changed and adjusted with owner´s feedback.

Amel´s approach to bluewater oceanic cruising

The funny thing about this revolutionary modernistic design by Amel was that in essence they never really cut off their connection to the old Amel. Apart from skipping the ketch-rigging part, these „new“ Amels are still very much on spot with Henri Amel´s original idea for the boats. Which is namely to make a very comfortable, bluewater cruising long distance-optimized yacht sporting lots of luxury whilst maintaning an easy-sailing approach.

archimedes sailing yacht

What I like most is the practicality-aspect. You can see it even from the pontoon without having entered the boat. This is a big sailing yacht without a dinghy garage. I guess for Amel this is just a waste of time. When seriously sailing around the world, when sailing itself is no more than 5 to 10 per cent of the time, being at anchor and exploring all those nice places is what you do. So, a regular use of the dinghy is needed. Why wasting precious interior volume for a garage and have all the launching/parking hustle when a simple system of two davits can solve it? Simple, yet nicely designed. Unlike on many other boats, Berret-Racoupeau came up with a system that very much and stylishly blends in into the overall grand design of the yacht.

archimedes sailing yacht

Style is one backbone of the Amel. You can see the little things here and there, all over the place. It´s a very „French“ thing I shall say. Just look at these „Welcoem aboard“-step that leads from the aft deck into the cockpit area. They could have fitted justa  step. On the Amel 60, it´s a statement. Which brings us to another signature of Amel. The middle-cockpit. As it is placed well on top of the pivoting point of the hull, here´s the place with the least motion even in harshest conditions.

archimedes sailing yacht

In this, middle-cockpits are always much smaller in terms of measurements and available space, volume than their Mediterranean-style open aft cockpit-counterparts. But their conceived and factual safety is unmatched, as any sailor would clearly confirm by just looking at the high coamings and the „enclosure“-style arrangement of the seating.

The center of boatlife: Underneath the dodger

Let´s remain a bit here. Most likely the dodger/deckhouse is the biggest of Amel´s prime signatures. On the Amel 60 it had grown to the size of a litteral winter garden. It´s just huge! Full standing height underneath, nice roofing panels with padding, large safety glass front and side windows (no problem when the weather turns nasty) and lots of sun protection for the crew.

archimedes sailing yacht

When you´ve never been aboard an Amel so far because you maybe didn´t like the design, do it! Jump over your shadow and let the ideas of Henri Amel unfold their impressions on you. Millions of miles sailed in his boats, generations of sailors bringing back precious feedback from their circumnavigations are to be found in the latest generation of these yachts. You may still not find those beautiful, but you´d be acknowledging their practicality and proven use.

archimedes sailing yacht

One of those things which will never really win my heart is the steering station. Although I can see the idea behind it, I´m just a classic steering guy. For me, the wheel must be located in the back. Anyway, acknowledgeing Amel´s approach, this setup really has proven that it works for so many skippers. It is well protected underneath the dodger, contributes to a great sight to the front of the yacht. The skipper is part of the social life in the cockpit and not outside at the rear end.

archimedes sailing yacht

Since 99 per cent of the time steering is done by the autopilot anyways, so it doesn´t really matter where the wheel is positioned, right? Speaking of electric and electronic helpers aboard, of course, this +3.5 Million Euro yacht is equipped with all the playful helpers you can imagine. All of the furling gear, all winches and thus outhaul, sheets and other parts of the running rigging are operated by push-button technology from the main panel at the wheel.

archimedes sailing yacht

Although a bit awkward why they placed the almost anachronistic magnetic companss (in a huge size) in the middle of the console, I had to smile a bit. Steering and operating this big yacht from here is a no-brainer I guess. And since I´ve done a delivery cruise on Beneteau´s flagship 60-footer lately I know very well how comfortable and also safe it is so have a yacht where nobody will have to grind a winch to put in a reed or even step outside the protected cockpit area to work on lines and ropes. The Amel 60 pushes this idea to a nearly 100 per cent „cockpit only“-concept when it comes to sailing the yacht.

archimedes sailing yacht

Looking to the aft part of the boat from the cockpit you´ll notice the position of the four winches, two of which sport an impressive drum size. In case of electronic or electrical breakdown of course all systems can be worked manually, hence their position well in reach above the backrests of the cockpit cushions on the coamings. Although I envison the Amel predominantly in the deep blue warm areas of the Pacific Ocean, this setup makes her a fould weather-capable boat.

World cruising means anchoring

Many sailors I´ve talked to who really took their time exploring the world under sails (and not rushing from location to location) they told me that real cruising means … not to cruise. Most of the time is spent at anchor in all these little creeks, bays and inlets of the remote dream locations. You can imagine how important an often neglected part of the equipment, the anchor , becomes.

archimedes sailing yacht

For the Amel, the emphasis on anchoring is apparend when standing on the bow and inspecting the anchoring setup. Two big windlasses with anchor chains, one permanently connected to the anchor, are there to be used by the crew. When the ship´s weal and woe depends on those things, you´d better have some redundancy at hand when sailing the farthest corner of the planet.

archimedes sailing yacht

I was also impressed by the bow locker, which also functions as a crash box. You may easily fit a fully stocked skipper´s or even 2-bunk-crew cabin inside here. Or you use it as a huge stowage for the light wind sails Code 0 , Gennaker and even a Spinnaker. As a true Coconut-route boat, the Amel 60 of course is equipped with a Spi-pole and sail for the true dead downwind running points of sail. Let´s just mention the all-carbon mast equipped with hydraulic trimming systems.

A New York City loft …

The true charm and on-spot dedication to the cruising concept is to be seen when coming down the entryway ladder and looking at the saloon. Where in many (if not most) big units I personally have often the feeling that the interior designers sometimes do not really know how to utilize the huge supply of volume, on the Amel 60 this is not the case at all.

archimedes sailing yacht

The whole interior room appears to be one single, lofty unit. You could easily take the interior of the Amel 60 and put it into a New York City skyscraper on the Upper Westside and rent it out for a fortune. The boat is light-suffused and so much welcoming, truly, a loft on the water! I´ve seen the Amel shipyard a few years ago and with my own eyes watched their joiners and carpenters putting together the high quality furniture of this yacht.

archimedes sailing yacht

It´s really eye candy to walk around, touch and feel the richness and heavy quality of the materials. In this, the saloon on one hand appears to be one single unit but it also retains a compartmentalized approach sporting different areas with different use-cases. The most attractive of which is the navigational area for the ship´s captain, which can best be used to explain this idea. It´s just as simple as this:

Being a Captain aboard an Amel …

… must be awesome! Just because of this nav-station. I mean, isn´t anyone who sails a lot not envying this setup? A wonderfully cozy but also massive stool in front of a large worktop that is the chart table. Secondary displays, a big secondary chart plotter and all switches used for running the boat well at reach. Also the position just to the left after coming down is perfect when sailing.

archimedes sailing yacht

I dislike the chart tables placed out of reach, this can still be seen on so many boats. I know that many designers are increasingly reluctant to fulfil this particular item on the design briefing to do-list, but I find it awkward when putting them in front of the forward bulkhead for example, forcing the crew to walk all the way through the saloon (with rain-dripping oils on) just to do a log entry and such. Well, that is much better when done in the Amel-way.

archimedes sailing yacht

Again, the boat is bristling with so many details which not just show the high amount of quality and effort put into the yacht but also the dedication and aspiration that is so visible in this boat. As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, an Amel is a polarizing brand and as such their customers are special people in so many ways. I am sure, these people will recognize and salute to such a detail like this carbon main switch panel .

Spending (a long) time aboard the yacht

Electronic equipment is a matter of fact in any yacht, moreso in boats that go around the world. As many more families fullfil their dreams of a sabbatical at sea , you of course need to feed the needs of the young family members: Onboard internet is a no-brainer (also for the grown ups) but also more and more flatscreen TVs are seen on boats.

archimedes sailing yacht

With a dramaticly increasing supply of streaming-quality internet, even offshore thanks to services like Starlink our little crew members can enjoy their zillionth rewatch of their most favorite Paw Patrol episodes and even cinematic experiences for adults are possible in your on-board movie theater. Look at this massive TV! I like the fact that Amel didn´t fitted one of these ridiculous TV-lifts though.

archimedes sailing yacht

When it comes to enjoying a family´s meal – at least when it is unbearable up on deck due to weather or temperatures – the Amel 60 offers a significant portion of the saloon´s volume to this purpose. A real O-shaped settee around a large foldable table will house all the crockery, tableware and steaming bowls of tasty food to feed at least eight adults with ease.

archimedes sailing yacht

And of course there is this secondary settee apparent to starboard side. You may have read the article on the RM 1380 where I mentioned that it is exactly these sofas which make apparent the more or less „dispair“ of interior designers what to do with this space. On smaller ships, you may fit a longitudinal galley, some temper around with nav-stations or such. Well, don´t get me wrong: I love these settees, especially when in this case on starboard tack, as they are a perfect „pilot´s berth“ to take a little nap fully clothed when at the same time maintaining a quick response time and being able to jump on deck in case something happens.

Being the ship´s cook aboard the Amel …

… must be awesome too! As you know I am a dedicated cook, I love preparing meals aboard too . Whereas on series production boats the galleys are often a compromise to fit the needs of the charter industry (where most crews eat out instead of cooking) and the classic boat owners (who needs a different galley but there´s also a wide range from strictly no onboard-cooking to self-sufficiency) the dedicated bluewater cruising yacht makers have put a special emphasis and much care into designing their galleys.

archimedes sailing yacht

Next to the ship´s skipper, the cook is undeniably the second most important person on board. Looking at the Amel 60 galley, it´s as perfect as you may think a boat kitchen can be. Spacious, thought through and offering all the equipment and amenities you´d expect from your galley. Also, the galley is placed deep down into the boat´s hull, near the picting center of it, making it more comfortable even in hard ship´s motion to cook.

archimedes sailing yacht

The galley has all you need to keep the ship well fed and up. In this Amel, the kitchen is electric only, skipping the liquefied gas stove. There´s also large washing machine/dryer combination, and a really nice sized dishwasher. Unlike many other boats which offer those rediculously small dishwashers, the one on the Amel 60 has home-size. And there´s the fridge and freezing equipment, all of which is surely subject to the order of ervery individual owener.

archimedes sailing yacht

The galley comes with a nice custom made Corian worktop and when working here grants a nice view outside through the two large hull windows. If the owners want to reach their aft cabin, which is the next part of the yacht we will inspect closely, they have to pass through the kitchen area. This is a nice way to keep their privacy granted and locked away from the social areas of the yacht and common on aft cabin yachts.

archimedes sailing yacht

The boat of course is powered by a large 175 horse power Diesel-engine that is fed with a total of 900 litres of fuel. This makes this vessel able to do a 130 hour-motoring leg should wind die down completely at a decent cruising speed. A Diesel-powered generator to drive the large AC-units and all electric fittings is customary. Secondary power will be generated by an inverter, a 530 Watt peak solar panel-installation on the hard dodger and there are no limits to install further equipment in the huge engine room.

The one and only long cruise cabin concept

In this, of course, the Amel 60 is designed to sail, of course. Berret-Racoupeau put a tall sloop rigg onto the completely new designed hull with 165 square meters upwind sails area. For comparison, the Oyster 595 sports 167 square meters and the Oceanis Yacht 60 will have 153 square meters in her standard all-furling version. Best enjoyed when under deck is the sailing in the aft owner´s cabin of course: The palace!

archimedes sailing yacht

I really love this interior layout concept as it utilized best the huge volumes created in the stern section by modern hulls which carry the maximum width all the way back. You know that I am (and quite possible always will be) an Oyster-fanboy for sure, but the aft cabin concept is also masterfully executed in this Amel 60 indeed.

archimedes sailing yacht

The large island bed floats freely in the cabin where there is always complete free headroom. The aft wall is fitted with many closets and a shelf, all around in the cabin much more stowage is to be found. I like the small workplace with a desk that can both be used for her make-up-sessions and his boat office Teams-meetings. The cushions of the archchair/stool are both cozy enough to lounge around in the mornin before getting dressed and spend some hours for concentrated work down here when there´s too much trouble up on deck.

archimedes sailing yacht

I also like the fact that Amel didn´t „freaked out“ in the bathroom. Why waste so much volume and space for a simple toilet, a shower and a sink? Those stuidly exaggerated „luxury“ bathrooms even make the boats more unsafe. The owner´s bathroom in the Amel 60 offers everything you want with a decent size – but there´s always a safe grab near to get a firm grip when having to use it in a storm.

archimedes sailing yacht

It is also noteworthy that the Amel 60 has a nicely toned amount of natural light in the aft cabin. Four skylight hatches which can be opened as well as a nice aft-facing window stripe (you remember the picture from the „welcome aboard“-step I showed at the beginning of tis article? Well, this is it from the other side. There are also two more opening windows here for fresh air. It´s a very nicely done owner´s suite, I shall say.

Guests on board? Welcome!

Sometimes, when I cannot find a good night´s sleept, I dream of sailing. Sounds familiar to you? Well, in some of those dreams I kind of develop business model in which I try to come up with ideas of how to get my own dreams of sailing around the world financed. Preferrably by sailing. One of the most common models to do so – in reality – is the cabin charter-idea. Just sailing and renting out the cabins to fellow people. I´d say the Amel 60 is a great boat for such an idea. Why? Look at the guest cabins:

archimedes sailing yacht

The yacht is available only in the 3 cabin  3 bathroom-version. In this, each guest cabin is in the bow, placed well away from the owners. Each cabin has ist own fully equipped bathroom and I´d say that the guests renting such a cabin on my Adventure-Amel 60 would be just as pleased! The beds are well-sized to fit two adults easily. They are placed to the outer walls of the hull. Apart from a serious need for lee-cloth when sailing heeled or in bad weather, the guest cabins are just awesome!

archimedes sailing yacht

The hull windows are big and allow a nice sight to the surroundings: This is not the case in so many other yachts with such windows. There´s more than enough stowage but also volume: As a guest aboard the Amel 60 you will surely never experience any claustrophobic breakdowns or the depression of having to live in a dark cellar. Astonishing! So, if you seek a yacht that offers really nice guest cabins, consider the Amel 60, please.

archimedes sailing yacht

In the bow the shipyard fitted the bathrooms for the guests which also feature the complete setup you´d expect to see on a yacht this category. It may be the case that in really rough seas the utilization of the bathrooms can be a bit challenging since they are placed right behind the first bulkhead after the front locker, but I guess an Amel will stay in warmer, less dangerous and „moving“ sailing areas anyway.

Size does matter

In this my walkthrough of this amazing luxury sailing yacht ends. I thank the crew for showing me around and take a last walk up on deck to the bow. Shooting a picture from this perspective shows the real difference and scale of both the Amel 50 and her larger sister, the Amel 60 moored directly next to each other.

archimedes sailing yacht

Of course, the „smaller“ Amel 50 is a big boat and in herself more than perfectly suitable to tackle the vastness of the oceans and deliver a full luxurious sailing adventure. The Amel 60 is a battlecruiser in direct comparison! So I guess, after having published this article, I will go to bed later again and maybe dream on … about my idea of being a self-employed pro-skipper renting out these luxury cabins on my way around the world. Because frankly, this yacht is absolutely made to do exactly that!

There are many memes in Russia about Chelyabinsk. Let’s give a few so that you get the whiff of what it feels like to live in this beautiful yet tough land. The guys from Chelyabinsk are so tough, they don't drink coffee, they eat it with a spoon from a coffee can. The Chelyabinsk mosquitoes are so tough they suck their own blood. The Chelyabinsk weathercocks are so tough, they show the wind where it should blow. The list can be continued ad infinitum. The meme has actually been quite widely used by Russian stand-up comics.

Chelyabinsk region

The Chelyabinsk Region is situated in the southern part of the Ural Mountains , at the juncture of the Middle Urals and the Southern Urals, and partly in the West Siberian Plain adjacent to the mountains. It is a part of the Urals Federal District of the Russian Federation .

The Chelyabinsk Region borders the Sverdlovsk Region in the north, the Kurgan Region in the east, Kazakhstan in the south-east, the Orenburg Region in the south, and the Republic of Bashkortostan in the west.

The area of the Chelyabinsk region is 88 529 sq.km., the total length of the borders is 2,751 km, the length from north to south is 490 km, and from west to east is 400 km. The population of the region is 3.466 million people (as of 2020). Of the Urals regions, Chelyabinsk is the most densely populated. In terms of population density, it is the second largest after the Sverdlovsk Region . The region includes 30 cities.

National Park Taganay

Flora and Fauna

The landscape of the region is diverse: mountains, mixed forests, forest-steppes and steppes. At the same time, pristine nature is adjacent to places heavily polluted by industrial plants. Forest-steppes and steppes cover approximately the equal areas (38% each). The forest zone occupies about a quarter of the total area. Dark coniferous taiga prevails on the mountain slopes, and mountain tundra can sometimes be found at the tops of the mountains.

The flora of the region includes 78 species of mammals, 264 species of birds, 7 species of reptiles, 10 of amphibians, 48 of fish, about 13 thousand species of insects and molluscs.

The Chelyabinsk Region has a continental climate that increases its particular features if you move from north-west to south-east. The region is located in the depths of Eurasia, far from seas and oceans. The climate is significantly influenced by the Ural Mountains that create a perfect barrier for the movement of western air masses. Winters here are cold and long, and summers are hot with recurrent droughts. Winter begins around mid-November. The most powerful snow cover can be found in the mountainous forest areas. Typically, there are heavy snowstorms observed mostly in February and March. Spring usually starts only in early April and summer comes in the second decade of May. The average daily temperature in January ranges from -15°C (+5 F), with severe frosts reaching -44 or -50°C (-47 -58 F). The average daily temperature in July is +25°C (+77 F). The temperature can reach up to +39 or +40°C (+102 or +104 F) for several days in July.

There are no camels living in the natural environment in the Chelyabinsk Region, yet the flag and coat of arms of Chelyabinsk City, as well as the flag of the Chelyabinsk Region, feature a camel. It is explained by the fact that in the 19th century, trade was the main source of income of the city, so there were many camels in the passing caravans.

The Chelyabinsk Region is associated with the meteorite that fell here on February 15, 2013. When a meteorite flew over the region and exploded, it caused a lot of damage to the ground and injuries to people. Several pieces of the meteorite fell near Lake Chebarkul. After this event, a monument in the shape of a meteorite was erected near the lake.

Among the mysteries of the region, we should mention the Kyshtym Dwarf (aka Alyoshenka). The remains of this mysterious creature were found in 1996 in Kaolinovy settlement on the outskirts of the town Kyshtym. There were many assumptions about its origin, including the hypotheses that it was a humanoid or an alien, but the peculiar Dwarf was never attributed to any known species. The remains were lost, only photos and videos are left.

It is here that one of the most ancient civilizations on a planet used to live. The traces of human settlement have been found in an ancient settlement Arkaim.

The Chelyabinsk Region has a stone river which is considered the largest in the world. It is basically a chaotic heap of huge stones that resembles a river bed. It is over 6 km long and up to 700 m wide. This river is "flowing" in the Taganay National Park . The region has its own Paris; it is a village with a copy of the Eiffel Tower.

Near Korkino town in the Chelyabinsk Region, there is the deepest in Europe and the second in size coal mine in the world. Its depth reaches 500 m, the diameter of the coal mine funnel is 1.5 km.

Korkinsky coal mine

The town of Troitsk is the sunniest place in the region as it enjoys 2218 hours of sunshine per year, which is more than in the famous Black Sea resort Sochi.

In some years it is possible to observe polar lights in the Chelyabinsk Region.

The region's mountains, lakes and forests are wonderful places for travel enthusiasts. Among the natural attractions are beautiful mountains and rocks. The highest mountains are located in the west of the region, including the highest point of the region – the Nurgush Range (1,406 m).

The most popular mountains and ranges are the Big Nurgush Range , the Taganay Ranges (the Big, Middle, and Small Taganay), the Zyuratkul Range , the Urenga Range , Mount Yurma , the Three Brothers Rocks , the Black Rock , the Chashkov Range, the Arakul Mounds , Mount Sugomak , Mount Alexander Hill , Mount Yegoza and others. Most of these ranges and mountains are located in national parks in the Chelyabinsk Region.

Mount Yegoza

Mount Yegoza (607.7 m), also spelt as Egoza, is the highest point to the west of Kyshtym town. Like Mount Sugomak , Mt. Yegoza is present on the town’s coat of arms. There are many legends about Mount Yegoza and Mount Sugomak . One of them says that in ancient times there lived Sugomak and his beloved Yegoza who were not allowed to be together by hostile Bashkir clans. The story runs almost like notorious Romeo and Juliet. To prevent the lovers’ encounters, the clan people chained Sugomak and took Yegoza away and hid her in the mountains so those two would never be together. The lovers were worried that they caused a lot of trouble for their families. And they prayed to the gods and said that they were ready to sacrifice themselves but that the Bashkirs should have peace and they should be united forever. The gods heard them and a miracle happened. Since then, the Bashkirs have been living in peace. Sugomak and Yegoza became inseparable being turned into mountains standing next to each other. Tears that they shed weeping over their unsuccessful love formed lake Sugomak.

Mount Yegoza

From the top of Mount Yegoza opens a beautiful panorama: in the west – the chain of the Urals, in the east – a view over Kyshtym, Kasli, Ozers, the towns of the Chelyabinsk Region, and picturesque lakes. In winter, the Yegoza ski centre operates on the mountain, the pistes are laid on the north-eastern slope. Mount Yegoza , together with the mountain and lake Sugomak, Golaya Sopka, Sugomak cave, is part of the Sugomak natural complex.

Alexander Hill

Alexander Hill (843 m), or Aleksandrovskaya Sopka is an imperial mountain in the Urals. Despite its small height even for the Urals, the mountain is quite famous. It was glorified by the Grand Duke and the future Emperor Alexander II, who made his first trip to Russia and visited this peak in 1837. Located in the Ural-Tau Range, this mountain received the "imperial" name. However, it is not the only emperor in the history of Hill’s life. In 1824, Emperor Alexander I inspected his possessions near this hill, and in 1904 at the foot of the hill, there was a train ride made by Emperor Nicholas II. He did not climb to the top, only looked out of the window at the granite obelisk "Europe-Asia" installed near the station Urzhumka. The Hill is easily accessible for climbing, trails lead to the top, and at its foot, there is a large spring. On the top, there are rocks typical for the whole Urals. Nearby is the town of Zlatoust. It is more convenient to start your trip to the mountain from the railway station Urzhumka.

The Arakul Mounds (Shikhany)

It is definitely worth visiting the Arakul Mounds (called locally ‘Shikhany’). The Arakul Mounds (or simply Big and Small Shikhan) are stony idols formed by huge blocks and slabs. The mounds stretch over 2 km south-west of Lake Arakul which likes near the town of Upper Ufaley and about 10 km west of the village Vishnevogorsk. The highest point is the summit of Chamberlain (80 m). Climbers have a training ground on the steep eastern slope where cliffs reach up to 60 m. And the gentle western slope allows climbing without special equipment, at its foot, there is a spring with clean drinking water - Mariyn Stream.

The Zigalga Ridge

The Zigalga Ridge belongs to the mountainous part of the Southern Urals. Almost all its peaks exceed 1000 meters. The ridge is located in the basin of the Yuryuzan River. Its highest point is Big Shelom (1,489 m) – the third largest mountain in the Southern Urals. The administrative border between Bashkiria and the Chelyabinsk Region cust the ridge into the northern and southern parts. Its southern part, including Big Shelom mountain, is located on the territory of the Southern Urals Reserve and represents a chain of corrom peaks (made of clutters of large boulders) in the form of helmets, hence the name itself – Shelom, which means helmet in Russian. Visitation of this part of the ridge is limited. The northern part is more accessible for tourists; it has more gentle peaks with nice foothills. Up to the height of 750 m, the slopes are covered with forest, then start elfin woods, meadows, high bogs, the latter are the largest in the Southern Urals but quite passable. Once you hit a 1000 meter mark, you see stone placers (corroms) and stone idols. One of the attractions of the Zigalga Ridge is the Elokhta River with a canyon, a waterfall and a small lake in the northern part of the ridge. From the top of the Zigalga, there is a wonderful panorama of the highest ridges and mountains in the Southern Urals: the Nurgush Range , the Marshak, the Iremel , the Kumerdak, Yamantau Mountain and Nary Mount.

Zigalga Ridge

The Casarmenny Ridge

The Casarmenny Ridge is also interesting. It is a mountain range located at the exit of Asha settlement towards the town of Minyar. People call it the "Gate of the Southern Urals".

The Chashkovsky Ridge

The Chashkovsky Ridge got its name for its semicircular shape, it has a form of a big cup or a goblet – chasha in Russian. Its main attraction is a fortified settlement of stone figures – rocky idols of bizarre forms scattered in the forest. Their height varies from 3 to 40 m. Stone sculptures remind of different silhouettes among which you can see the contours of a crocodile, dragon, eagle, turtle, camel, bear, etc. Some of the remains have holes and cavities in which tourists like to make wishes. Climbing competitions are held here quite often. The site is suitable for beginners as well as for experienced athletes. The ridge is located near the town of Miass.

Protected Sites: reserves, national and natural parks

  • The Chelyabinsk Region has fascinating and picturesque protected natural sites
  • The Taganay National Park
  • The Zyuratkul National Park
  • The Zigalga National Park
  • The Ilmensky State Reserve
  • The Arkaim Historical and Cultural Reserve. The archaeological objects on its territory are the same age as those of the Egyptian pyramids. The museum-reserve was established in 1991 as a branch of the Ilmensky State to protect archaeological objects, ancient burial grounds and modern natural landscapes.
  • The Eastern Urals Reserve was established in 1966 to study the consequences of a radiation accident at the chemical plant Mayak which occurred in 1957. The protection regime has had a positive impact on the flora and fauna of the area.
  • The Southern Urals State Natural Reserve has only 10% of the territory located in the Chelyabinsk region.
  • Other protected areas include the Shershnevsky urban pinewood, the Kashtaksky forest, and the Karagai forest.

There are several nurseries and natural zoos in the Chelyabinsk Region:

  • The Akvilon Ethnic Centre of Northern Peoples is a nursery of Samoyed Laika and Husky, as well as a museum complex featuring the arts and crafts of the peoples of the North and the museum of gold mining. Visiting the latter is possible only in summer. It is located 34 km from Chelyabinsk.

Water Resources

General information.

There is a watershed between the Kara and the Caspian Sea basins in the Chelyabinsk Region. The river network consists of 3,602 rivers with a total length of about 17.9 thousand km, most of them are small rivers and streams. More than half of the rivers (about 55.1%) are in the western mountainous part of the region. Those mainly belong to the Kama River basin. They have rapid currents, rocky beds, and precipitous banks. They flow in well-defined narrow valleys.

The rivers of the Tobol basin flow in the east of the region. They originate in the eastern spurs of the Ural Mountains , in the upper reaches they are wild and rapid, whereas once they hit the plain, they acquire a calm current typical of plain rivers.

The right tributaries of the Ural River originate in the elevated parts of the basin and have the character of mountain rivers, whereas the left tributaries are typically plain rivers. The feeding of the rivers in this area is predominantly mixed with snow-dominated feeds and, for mountain rivers, with snow and rain-dominated feeds. Rivers are characterised by high spring floods starting mainly in the first decade of April and low runoff during the rest of the year. In mountainous areas, there are two peaks of flooding. The first comes in the second decade of April and the second in the first decade of May and the summer-autumn low season is sometimes interrupted by rainfall floods.

In the Trans-Urals, the low-water periods are long and stable, with many small rivers drying up. Rivers freeze mainly in early November and open in April.

Chelyabinsk winter lake

The region is often called a lake district, almost like in Britain. The Chelyabinsk Region has more than 3,200 natural lakes and artificial lakes with a total area of about 2,600 sq.km. including about 1,700 lakes with an area of more than 0.01 sq.km., and several smaller lakes (according to the Institute of Lake Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The lakes here are mainly fresh but in the areas of insufficient precipitation in the south and south-east of the region, there are lakes with high mineralization and salinity.

The area occupied by artificial lakes is much smaller than the area of natural lakes (they are most widely spread in the Tobol River basin). The Chelyabinsk Region occupies the last place in terms of the area of swamps and marshlands in the Urals, as well as in terms of marshlands in general. The marshes and wetlands take up about 2.18% of the territory of the Chelyabinsk Region (about 1,927 sq.km.). The area and the number of lakes and artificial reservoirs, swamps and marshlands are unstable since they depend on natural (climatic phenomena, water regime, etc.) and anthropogenic (drainage or watering of territories, regulation of runoff, etc.) factors.

The Chelyabinsk region is known for its lakes. Lake Zyuratkul is the highest, it is located at an altitude of 724 m a.s.l. and surrounded by beautiful mountains and rocks. It is located in the Zyuratkul National Park . The most popular and beautiful lakes are Lakes Turgoyak, Uvildy, Itkul, Sugomak, Sinara, Arakul and Big Allaki. Many of the lakes in Chelyabinsk are hydrological monuments of nature. On the picturesque banks, there are many spas, resorts and holiday homes. For those wishing to improve their health, spas and resorts therapeutic muds and mineral waters. The lakes and rivers of the Chelyabinsk region will be interesting for fishing enthusiasts as well.

Lake Zyuratkul

Lake Uvildy is the largest lake in the Southern Urals. It consists of three independent parts which are separated from each other by a chain of islands (there are about 50 of them).

Lake Turgoyak is called the younger brother of the Baikal for the beauty of its shores and purity of water. The bottom of the lake can be seen up to 10-12 m deep. It is located in a deep intermountain hollow between the Ural-Tau and the Ilmensky ridges at an altitude of 320 m above sea level. There are 6 islands on the lake, the largest and most interesting of which is Vera Island. There used to be an Old Believers' hermitage here as well. It was believed that it was built by Princess Vera who fled from marriage with an unloved one. On the island, archeologists found the Neanderthals' site, an ancient quarry and the remains of ancient megalithic structures. Some megaliths were found near the island as well – there are huge granite boulders, clearly processed by people, which also indicates the presence of ancient people in the area of the lake in old times.

Some of the lakes were formed at the site of old quarries. The most interesting of them are Ural Bali Lake near Kyshtym, the Cheremshanskie Quarries near Upper Ufaley.

Lake Turgoyak

The Ural Bali is the name of the lake formed on the place of the former kaolin quarry near Kyshtym. Kaolin is clay of white colour, it consists of kaolinite. Like the popular island of Bali in Indonesia, the lake in the Chelyabinsk Region has very beautiful azure water color and white shores. Until 2011, the water from the quarry was pumped out but then there were ducts cut for water drainage and the lake was naturally filled with water quite quickly. So, Ural Bali is quite young. In summer, there are a lot of tourists here, as well as fans of spectacular photos.

Kaolin Quarry

Fans of rafting should have a closer look at the rivers Ai, Lemesa, Yuryuzan, Ufa, as well as Bagaryak (in spring time).

The Ai River

The Ai River has collected a lot of natural attractions around it and its rafting program is rich. The Ai is the left tributary of the Ufa river. In translation from Turkic means ai means "lunar". It originates from the Big Cranberry swamp located at the junction of the Urenga and the Avalyak ridges . There are three distinctive parts of the river: its source, the mountainous part and the plain part. The first part of the river runs from south to north along the mountain taiga from the Big Cranberry swamp to Kusa. On its way, the river is surrounded by the Urenga and the Ural-Tau ridges. The mountainous part of the river is from Kusa to the village of Lakly, this part is located within the Southern Urals. And the plain part of the river passes on hills and plains of href="https://peakvisor.com/adm/orenburg-oblast.html" target="_blank">Orenburg Region in the south, and the Bashkiria (from Lakly village to the river mouth).

Ai River

For rafters, the mountainous part of the river Ai is most appealing. It is possible to raft on catamarans and kayaks from May till October. There are no serious obstacles (apart from the aforementioned Rascal Rock), the current is slow, therefore rafting will suit beginners and families with children. Along the route, there are many caves. In fact, there is a cave virtually in every rock, on every tributary and in the nearby ravine. Therefore, a seemingly plain rafting easily turns into a fascinating water and speleological journey. When rafting, you can admire very beautiful coastal rocks and visit the Ai Fountain. The rafting route also includes climbing the Devil's Finger cliff (80 m high). Moving along the tributary of the Big Satka River, rafting can be combined with a visit to the Porogi settlement. Here you can find the Porogi hydroelectric power station – the oldest hydroelectric power station in Russia – and the dam which beautifully blends into the natural landscape, there is also a factory complex of the early 20th century. The factory and the power plant got their names due to rapids, and stormy current of the Big Satka River, which remained at the bottom of the pond after the dam was built.

The Lemesa River is the sportiest river in the Southern Urals because it offers plenty of opportunities for watersports. The river has its source in the relatively low Dry Mountains of the Chelyabinsk Region, and its mouth is in the Sim River in Bashkiria . The rafting is available from late April to mid-May when melting snow makes the river full to the brim. In summer, the Lemesa becomes shallow but you can still go rafting. You can start from several points including the four-meter Atysh waterfall. One of the most difficult Southern Ural rapids along the river is Karamantash (or the Black River). This river is suitable for experienced rafters only.

The Yuryuzan River flows in Bashkiria and the Chelyabinsk Region. It originates from the highest point of the Southern Urals in Bashkiria – Yamantau Mountain , and flows into the Pavlovskoye Reservoir on the Ufa River. The river is the leader among other Southern Ural rivers in terms of the difference of heights, which is astounding 710 m. There are beautiful rocks along its banks. The river is rafted from May to September. The current is fast enough but the rafting is relatively easy.

Yuryuzan River

There are also some interesting places on the Miass River as well. You can drop at the Ustinov Canyon near Miass, or visit the rocks near Big Balandino village, which is near Chelyabinsk. And when you move closer to the Sim River, there is a pulsating spring called Eralashny (or the Missing Spring) of karst origin near the town of Minyar.

Major Cities

The transport network of the Chelyabinsk Region is well developed. This is due to the region's successful geographical location on the border of Siberia, the Volga Region, and Kazakhstan. The region has railways and major highways, and there is an international airport called Chelyabinsk in the north-east of the city, a military airfield and a sports airfield.

It is common practice to start with the city of Chelyabinsk, you can get here by air, train or by car from Yekaterinburg (it is just 215 km) or from another major city nearby.

Chelyabinsk

The capital of the Chelyabinsk Region, the city of Chelyabinsk, was originally built as a fortress in 1736 to protect food supplies against attacks by the then-wild Bashkirs. Gradually it grew into a factory and became one of the largest industrial centres in the Urals. During the WW2 years, tanks and military vehicles were produced there, so people began to call it Tankograd. However, due to the large volume of heavy industry, Chelyabinsk has serious environmental issues.

To get acquainted with the central sights, it is worth walking along Kirovka Street which is often dabbed the local Arbat (a famous pedestrian district in Moscow). This street has buildings of ancient architecture, monuments and various sculptures made of bronze.

Chelyabinsk city

You can also visit the Chelyabinsk State Museum of Local Lore, the Chelyabinsk State Museum of Fine Arts, the private House Museum of Stone and Gems, a zoo, the Gagarin Central Park and theatres.

The history of the town began with a small settlement whose inhabitants tried to find gold on the site of the present town. The quest for gold proved to be in vain, but the diggers struck on iron and founded a factory named Zlatoust in honour of St. John Chrysostom, famous for his eloquence. The settlement was officially laid in 1754, but it was not until 1811 that the main factory was finally purchased by the state and the settlement became a fully-fledged town.

It is a real mining town which grew at the foot of two ridges – the Taganay and the Urenga . Its streets and blocks cover the slopes of the Ural Mountains . An excellent and unusual option for an excursion in the city will be a trip by tram. The route passes through the forest and mountains opens beautiful views of the Taganay and Urenga ridges , Kosotur Mount and Alexander Hill , the city pond, and also the Ai river. Steep descents and ascents during the trip are simply breathtaking!

Zlatoust, Russia

Not far from the centre of Zlatoust, in the area of the Red Hill, there is a 53-meter-high bell-tower with the Chapel of St. John Chrysostom. Anyone can climb it and enjoy a magnificent view of the city and the mountain ranges. Among the sights are the Mountain Park named after P.P. Bazhov, the City Museum of Local Lore, and the Museum of Zlatoust Armory.
