6m model yacht plans

Model Boat Builders Plans: Six Metre Class Yacht Plans

This MYA national class is a scaled down version of its full sized counterpart and offers a traditionally graceful appearance with steady performance and handling. Boats are typically about one metre on the waterline with long overhangs. The draught is restricted to around 230 mm (9 ins) with the displacement typically 12 kg (26 Ibs) and the sail area relatively large at about .7 square metres (1100 sq.ins). Please Note: These plans are printed to order and take approximately 7 days for us to obtain.

Quick Overview

A good quality mould from an accurately made master now exists and it is hoped SAILSetc will be able to supply super strong and light hull mouldings made in pre-preg carbon from later 2020 onwards. The hulls will have a centreline witness mark, transom, deck edge flange around the entire hull and centre deck and foredeck areas all included in the primary hull moulding. See below for the other parts that will be required to provide a kit for the boat.

ROMANZA - lines plan. Lines plan only, 11.5 kg, 0.7 m2 sail area - VPP

A revised hull form tuned to give a design that will compete across the wind speed range with the best existing designs in this class i.e. RENAISSANCE and ROCOCO providing it is built to the same standard. In fact the VPP has shown these designs are exceptionally difficult to beat across the range of headings and wind speeds. This is part of the reason why this is the first design in the class we have released since 1996. Sections shown full size. Other lines shown at half size. Frame sizes are given for 3.5 mm thick planks. Make fin and rudder as shown on the MONARCH plan or use moulded items as below for best results.

Other SAILSetc products that will be required to complete the hull to the highest standard:

  • Fin box moulding - 350G or the carbon trunking to be used with 370-6M
  • Fin system - 370-6M
  • Rudder moulding - 365-BLADE
  • Ballast casting - 200-6M-9kg
  • Ballast/fin/hull connection - INS-080

If you are unfamiliar with the construction of a 6 Metre and do not have sufficient information provided by a lines plan only, then a construction plan from this or another class will provide a lot of the information you need. The NIMBUS iii plan is the best source of this information we can recommend - source it from Traplet Publications.

Electronic files

Our plans are not made as CAD files but are a combination of printed output from the Maxsurf hull design program that is used to create the 3D shape and pen and ink addition of information about the appendages and rig. For this reason we cannot send an electronic version of the plan. However we are able to send dxf or iges files, 2D or 3D, output from the Maxsurf program. The 2D files may be of the plan view, the profile view, or the sections. The section view may also show the sections reduced by a 'planking' thickness. If you will be using planking as the method of construction it is important to estimate the planking thickness after the fairing and finishing process has been completed. If you are intending to use the files for creation of CNC machined parts it will be important to specify the spacing of the waterlines, buttock lines and sections.

Dartmoor Model Boat Club

The South West's Sail, Scale, Fast Electric and Power Boat Club.

The 6 Metre

Some would say this is a gentlemen’s model yacht with all the beauty and grace of the full- sized racing yachts on which it is based. The concept of the full size 6 Metre class started in 1907 and it was continually updated, and it enjoyed some time as an Olympic class. In respect of the model yacht they are measured and perform just like the full – size version, they even wobble downwind when over pressed. They are quite heavy and are definitely not speed machines but have an appeal which is hard to resist if you get the opportunity to sail one. Currently at DMBC there are two distinct types racing, the version which has an integral fin keel and the other a detachable fin with wing keel. The former type like the Dolphin design is very elegant on the water and this year the class National Championships will have a new trophy for the winner of these vintage style boats. The latter type although still with appealing looks are built with performance in mind. The latest Ravenna, Rococo and Romanza designs are now predominantly built in carbon fibre with carbon spars to match. All of the designs have one thing in common and that is that they are only allowed one mast and main boom. This makes sail selection on a race day important as changing mainsails is time consuming unless practiced regularly. Regular series racing takes place on the first Saturday of the month with up to nine boats competing on an Olympic style course. The 6M’s can be seen at the Club on most Wednesday’s and free Saturday’s, practicing for what is an important year for both the class and the club in 2019. With both the South West Area and National Championships at the club this year interest levels are high with new boats about to hit the water and others being renovated. Event dates:– 6M SWD Championship – Saturday 4th of May. 6M National Championships – Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of September For more information about the boats, the builders and sailmakers indeed anything 6M contact: – Locally – Peter Knightly Class Captain DMBC Tel No 01803 782776 For national information – 6 Metre Association –  sixmetresailing.weebly.com / or the MYA link at mya-uk.org.uk

Seabird (6mtr)

L oa - 1600mm      beam 260mm        displacement 11.5kgs.

Taking a fresh look at the 6m class, Dave Hollom designed 'Seabird' to be slightly lighter than the existing designs and by pushing the envelope of certain parameters, she is able to achieve a similar sail area to her heavier fellow 6m's. 'Seabird' is constructed with a mix of 2 layers of carbon/kevlar cloth, then reinforcement carbon strips are applied in other areas using female moulds. The fin is built into the hull, with the lead ballast detachable from the fin by a stainless steel rod. The rudder and lead ballast can be painted in the same colour as the hull, or finished to our standard dark grey option.

'Seabird' is configured to support the RMG sail winch inside the large radio pot, utilising a digitally printed mounting system. The rudder servo is installed outside the pot, in a separate tray to the rear. Additionally when using an RMG, we recommend using a 'left hand' 32mm self tensioning drum, easy to set up and very reliable.

Hull Kit options and Pricings The basic hull comes in the form of a part completed yacht, ready for the installation of the rig and radio equipment.  Alternatively a fully finishe d 'Ready to Sail' 6mtr can be purchased, the skipper just requires a TX, Rx and batteries.

Option 1 - £1400 Hull Kit and lead ballast Includes all eyebolts, deck pulleys and a sheeting line threaded through, leaving plenty of extra cord for attaching to the booms and winch drum.

Option 2 - £3400 As Option 1 plus RMG winch, RMG self tensioning drum, RMG watertight switch, XT30 connectors and a Rudder servo.

Rig - utilising high modulus carbon for the mast and Carbon booms Ballraced jib swivel, gooseneck and head fitting, Sails - made from varying weights of scrim for durability and efficiency Working main and jib Lightweight jib Flat mainsail 2nd suit jib and main

Description:

I had been talking to a customer at Boat Books where I worked about the problems of the world and what we could do to set things right, all the usual gripes about politicians, lawyers, and petty bureaucrats, you know the sort of thing.

My new friend told me that he was keen to establish a boat based outdoor youth training course to help change the ways of some of the local kids and had considered building a pair of brand new Naval Whalers.

Now the cost of one of these today is staggering and way beyond the budget that he could raise, so we sat down and worked out the key features of the clinker built 27ft Naval Trainer and I went home to translate those thoughts into a form both affordable and buildable by volunteer labour.

So, after a few months of phone calls back and forth plus occasional work at the drawing board, the 6 Metre Whaler emerged as you see here. Based upon the very successful yawl rigged version of the Navigator cruising dinghy, using the same simple plywood lapstrake over web frames and stringers structure. Traditional in her appearance, double ended, with two masts, and with enough sheer to be really pretty, she needs only about NZ $4000.00 worth of materials and about 220 hours of (competent) labor to complete a very nice little double ended craft which really looks the part.

She has a pair of straight alloy tubes as masts, the same sprit booms and proportions of sails as Navigator . There are three rows of reefs in the main, and if the weather requires, she will still balance under main only, or under jib and mizzen only, which gives lots of choices as the wind increases in strength. All spars fit inside the boat to reduce windage when rowing and making stowage when training much easier.

An outboard motor is inconspicuous in its well under the aft deck, and there is a steel centerboard that makes her well suited to the shallow harbor and estuaries where she will be based. But that ‘board’ is 85 kg of steel to steady her under what is in fact a powerful rig for her weight. Responses from owners tell me she is a a very fast boat under sail. And in case of really over-doing it, there is enough buoyancy built in to keep all of the occupants afloat while she is bailed out.

As a daysailer, one or two can handle her easily. I like these big open boats for the sheer feeling of space and comfort available in a relatively small boat, and it is in this role that the 6 Metre Whaler is most popular. There are quite a number now sailing as dayboats. One small group is chartering a couple and several are being used very successfully as cruising dinghies.

Just think of yourself gliding into a grassy bank at the head of an estuary somewhere, Partner at the helm while you stand by the mainsheet, number one Daughter up forward with the anchor line ready to pile ashore and tie up while small Son sits on the tent and groundsheet strapped in alongside the centrecase. You don't have to be home until Sunday night, and are looking forward to a weekend under canvas, voyaging during the day to as yet unknown channels, beaches and shellbanks, searching for the spirits of Susan, Tim and the rest of the Swallows and Amazons.

After a youth messing around in all sorts of boats on the Thames, I gained my degree - a BSc (Bachelor of Science) in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from Newcastle University in 1974.

Straight after University l worked in the design office of McGruer & Co. Scotland for 4 years - famous for high performance racing /cruising yachts beautifully crafted in wood (cold moulded as well as conventional clinker and carvel). l then became Technical Manager at D.M. Russell Marine - formerly Jas. A. Silvers yard just up the road at Rosneath, for 5 years - famous for their motor yachts - this period found me sailing/cruising in all sorts of craft around the coast of the UK and regular racing in everything from Dragons to the IOR fleet on the Clyde.

Do I need the eBook to build this cool rc sailboat?

No you don't. The book is designed for the newcomer to model yacht building. The book does make it a much simpler process with every detail figured out and covered in the book. Seasoned builders can simply have a go with the free plans.

Are the plans really free?

Yes all the plans are free to download and use as you see fit. The most comprehensive plans are the RS750 A1 full size.

Are there CAD files or 3D files?

Yes there is a 3D dxf file inside a zip file that you can download for free and use how you want. Some people use this in CAD programs or in 3D modelling programmes to great effect. Look under Racing Sparrow 750 plans on this page. An STL file for 3D printing is in the pipelines. Email me if you want a copy.

While we think 3D printing is great, we believe old-skool strip planking balsa is a wonderfully simple way to make a very lightweight boat with excellent longitudinal strength and beauty.

What the builders and sailors say:

Being a complete novice, I purchased your book a couple of years ago and built two racing sparrows. Building on this experience I then went on to build, from scratch, an IOM (Triple Crown design). I've since joined a local club and sail virtually every weekend. I would just like to thank you for your endeavours which have allowed me to enter a world I never thought was in my reach.

John Sterland, Australia

Coming upon your book, "Build your own Radio Controlled Yacht" in the Napier Public Library, I am hugely impressed. The combination of your superb photos and illustrations with your easy writing style make it a standout publication and I hope it does well for you.

Richard Spence, New Zealand

Thanks for an excellent design in your RG65. I trialled her again today in a solid 20 knots gusting higher. Even so in a steep chop and fingers off the rudder she drove upwind remarkably well, balanced perfectly. Very impressed that a model boat can handle that with a large rig. I found the book excellent. Ive built several big boats, plus a few skiffs and without that resource building such a good boat would have been impossible.

6m model yacht plans

Hi Bryn, I recently finished building these 2 Racing Sparrow RS750s which i really enjoyed, it was a great project and kept me busy for a few months. They have been for a successful maiden voyage and sail great and now just need a few tweaks in the sail department to get them sailing even better. Thanks.

6m model yacht plans

This red boat is the latest racing sparrow that we've built and put to the test. It has been built for wellington conditions. It has the maximum 1.3kg lead bulb. It has a basic deck structure, no plywood, 1 layer of balsa with a coat of resin-only to save on weight and budget. It uses the more basic hatch construction of plastic sheet taped on with ducktape, very effective and waterproof. The sails are maxed out, being cut very close to the plans, maybe a little bigger, there are no rules about max sail area in the class rules! Another difference on this boat is the mast has been painted black for a different look.

Boats in this IRSA A class are not limited in length, but are controlled by a formula which demands a balance between waterline length, displacement and sail area. Sails get smaller as displacement reduces and as waterline length increases. The formula was devised in 1922 by the editor of the Yachting Monthly as a testing ground for later use in the full sized 5.5 Metre class rule. A fleet of  ‘A Class’ boats is an impressive and awesome sight.

A six metre is a pleasure to sail, provided it is correctly set up of course.
