Reporting from the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival, MBY editor Hugo Andreae takes us on a full tour of the YOT 36, which was making its global debut...

The Catana Group is one of the world’s most prolific builders of sailing catamarans but now it has turned its attention to powercats , starting with this YOT 36.

Marketed under the brand name YOT (TOY spelled backwards), it will eventually include inboard- and outboard -powered craft of all different sizes, but first out of the traps is this new 36ft sporting weekender.  

The show demonstrator was fitted with a pair of 300hp Verado V8s for an estimated top speed of 35 knots, but it’s the stylish looks, clever packaging and versatile cockpit layout that are likely to impress buyers the most.  

At 3.99m wide, it is designed to fit into a standard 4m berth but folding bulwarks expand this to 5.4m at rest.

Two rows of twin bench seats with reversible back rests and fold-flat mechanisms allow them to face both ways or to link up to form sunbeds. Matching wet bars and tables also make this set-up ideal for long lunches afloat.

YOT 36 – More space, more comfort

Catana’s first motorised catamaran offers large open spaces and good performance underway

There’s no doubt about it. They know how to build a catamaran. They started when it wasn’t fashionable, and Catana has always been synonymous with fast sailing multihulls, albeit cruising ones . So why not try one with a motor? They thought long and hard about it, so it was not a spur-of-the-moment decision. The French shipyard has invested heavily in the creation of a brand, “YOT”, and the opening of a new production facility in Portugal dedicated to motorboats. A range of models is planned, of which the YOT 36 is only the first. Soon the 41 will be launched and by the end of the year, the 46 will be ready. They are all catamarans, but they use different power sources. Only the smaller two will have outboard engines.

But I digress, we are looking at what is happening now and that is the 36 . The project is the creation of J&J Design and I should say right away that I found the hull very convincing . Not just the hull, but let me take things in order. Each hull is powered by a 300 hp Mercury Verado V8 . The overall length is just under 11 metres and the beam is just under four metres. Conditions outside the breakwater at Canet-en-Roussillon weren’t particularly difficult, but they weren’t calm either. There were long waves of almost half a metre. This was enough to test the waterlines – a test that produced very positive results. I also found that the two hulls behaved very well when I criss-crossed the waves in all directions. 

How does the YOT 36 behave at sea?

The bow cuts through the waves well and the catamaran is very stable. That is the case even when the waves are side on, or coming from the stern, when I might have expected it to have more trouble . But nothing happened. The YOT 36 didn’t have any problems. The 660 horsepower delivered by the two outboards is more than enough for good speed acceleration. You only need five seconds (and 14 knots) to plane, and 27 to get to a top speed of over thirty knots when using the trim control. You get the feeling that the air that flows between the hulls helps both to get the boat on the plane more quickly and also to keep it there. And it stays up, even when you slowly reduce the speed.

I was expecting it to come back down as I eased off the throttle, but at 14 knots, and with a total usage of just 72 litres per hour, it was still stable and planning calmly . The YOT 36 feels just as good when changing direction. It can turn sharply without any difficulty, even though healing isn’t an option for a catamaran the way it is for a monohull. The sightlines from the helm, whether seated or standing, are always excellent, and the ergonomic design means everything is within easy reach. The T-Top isn’t connected to the windscreen, which means the cockpit is well-ventilated when you’re driving. I was less happy with the headroom. To be clear, it’s not low and there’s no danger of hitting your head when you’re behind the wheel. But it’s not very high either, and in rougher seas, you might run the risk of hitting your head on the T-Top if you hit a wave. A centimetre or two more would have made it easier to see forward.

There are two asymmetrical cabins: a larger one for the owner and a smaller one for the guests. This is a rational choice.

The deck layout makes full use of what a multihull has to offer. For example, you can get from aft to stern down the central axis between the hulls . It is a wide, comfortable and safe passageway. The same approach has been taken for all of the fittings. There are four sofas, two on each side, and with them a pair of tables that open up to make an eight-person dining table. The bar and kitchen units are also divided in two, with a barbecue on one side and a sink on the other, and there are even four helm seats, but with the central passageway in the middle. So basically we can say that they have made the most of the space available. Additionally, to get more room in the cockpit, the two sides in the stern fold down, to create an open area at water level.

THERE ARE SOLAR PANELS INSTALLED ON THE T-TOP PRODUCING RENEWABLE ENERGY TO POWER THE ONBOARD UTILITIES. ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES OF A CATAMARAN IS THAT IT DOESN’T ROLL AS MUCH WHEN ANCHORED AS A MONOHULL.

You get to the bow section alongside decks, similar to those on a classic walkaround . That means the deckhouse roof is given over to a sun pad, and further forward there are two additional sofas facing one another. In a similar vein, the access to each cabin is also separate, so the master cabin and the guest room each have their door. And the cabins have been cleverly designed not to be symmetrical. The master cabin also occupies some of the midship area, making it very comfortable for two people, while the starboard one is suitable for two children or one adult. In conclusion, the YOT 36 is a comfortable boat for cruises, both because of the surface area it offers thanks to the fact that it is a catamaran and thus has a greater beam, and because it behaves well underway and is more stable at anchor than a monohull. And all of that comes on a boat that is less than eleven metres long, and is powered by two 300-horsepower outboards.

Engine data The twin Mercury Verado V8s, each developing 300 horsepower, are impressive. They push the YOT 36 to a top speed of over thirty knots but also deliver plenty of torque, which translates into excellent acceleration.

Catana Group unveils YOT, a brand 100% dedicated to power catamarans

At a time when the powerboat market is driving production, and the powercat is continuing to develop, Catana Group is taking the next step. In addition to its two brands, Catana and Bali, which focus on the sailing catamaran sector, YOT will be offering a powercat range, starting with the outboard YOT 36 in September 2023, as Boris Compagnon explains.

Adapting know-how to power catamarans

Catana Group launches a new powercat brand, YOT. With two brands focused on sailing catamarans, Catana and Bali, this new range complements the existing one, concentrating solely on power. Boris Compagnon, Catana Group Marketing & Sales Director, explains this choice: "We're catamaran manufacturers, so it made sense to launch a power catamaran brand. In terms of equivalent length and power, they consume less than a monohull, offer greater autonomy and a wider living platform. It's a continuation of our know-how. Knowing that 8 out of 10 boats in the world today are motorboats, why not attack this market?"

A range of outboard and inboard catamarans

Starting in 2020, this project will see the launch of the first 36-foot model, the YOT 36. This 11 m catamaran with walk-around layout features a bowrider forward and a classic open deck configuration: sunbathing area, saloon and galley. Two cabins will be located on the lower deck. This first model will be equipped with two 300 hp outboard motors. However, the brand will not be concentrating solely on this segment, as Boris Compagnon explains: "Initially, we're launching an outboard range with boats from 36 feet to under 50 feet. In a second phase, we'll launch an inboard range, with larger boats, and a less open superstructure. The specifications will be totally different."

A hub specifically dedicated to motorboats

The approach has been totally rethought, with features specific to motorboats. A dedicated department was created within the group, from design and engineering through production to sales, marketing and branding. J&J Design was chosen to conceive and design the boat. The Slovenian agency is renowned in the industry for its numerous award-winning productions, including the XO DFNDR 9, the Aquila range, and several models from Fjord, Saxdor , Greenline and Targa.

The YOT 36, which will be previewed at the Cannes boat show, is designed for a wide range of programs, from day cruising to weekend getaways for couples or families.

With the YOT 36, the world number two in the leisure catamaran market is aiming for nothing less than to repeat the success of its Bali range in sailing, but this time on the powercat market. The credo of the YOT Power Catamarans range could not be clearer: to offer pleasure on board, a new state of mind on the yacht market, combining design, trend, space and comfort.

Certainly, the YOT 36 will be recognizable among a thousand on a body of water. On the design side, the taut and modern lines, very personal, should give the YOT 36 a real personality.

It must be said that the YOT 36 is signed by the firm J&J Design, a reference in the field of yachting!

The Hard-Top of the YOT 36, well integrated, will undoubtedly offer good protection against the bites of the sun, as well as against spray and rain. By using flexible canvas, the YOT 36 should be an all-weather powercat.

Important detail: the volume of the hulls should bode well for good interior accessibility, even if the yard has not yet revealed anything about the layout plan for this powercat.

Performance, economy and... stability!

The cockpit of the YOT 36 is distinguished with four seats protected by front and side windshields. Enough to enjoy speed in the greatest comfort. At the helm, the pilot should have fun, the YOT 36 being powered by two Mercury Verado V8 300hp outboard engines, renowned for their performance, silence and efficiency in terms of consumption. On the comfort side, the joystick should facilitate port maneuvers to the extreme, helped in this by electric steering and the multifunction electronic navigation system.

The deck plan of the YOT 36 is of the central console type, with two beautiful side walkways framing the steering console. This plan is quite classic, which clearly optimizes the useful volume of the deck, and the ease of movement on board. It is particularly practical in port, especially for the installation of fenders.

The deck area of the YOT 36 is nearly 38m2, i.e. a rather exceptional space used, the key word of which would be modularity in order to adapt to each type of use.

With its 3.99m beam and its 2 two aft bulwarks lowering to have a real beach club, the YOT 36 should be popular at anchor! As such, its central wet bar, outdoor fridge and cooking areas should make the YOT 36 a must have for family and friends!

This aft cockpit is completed by a foredeck which for its part accommodates a vast sundeck, a real bed on the sea, as well as a large bench seat positioned at bow level, allowing you to feel the speed while sailing, in complete safety. security !

2 comfortable cabins, in complete privacy

The interior of the YOT 36 - not yet unveiled by the shipyard - is organized around 2 cabins, positioned in each of the hulls, each cabin being equipped with its own bathroom and toilet, for overnight stays in complete privacy.
