Exclusive: pushing the boundaries of technology, Sailing Yacht A

Andrey Melnichenko is a man with exceptional vision. Where other yacht owners like to blend into the background, he wants his superyachts to push the boundaries of design, creativity and technology as well as make a statement. His first superyacht, Motor Yacht A , rocked the superyacht world with its radical design and now he’s done it again.

With an insatiable appetite to drive change he has put together a highly skilled team to build his new creation, currently under construction in Germany. Boat International was given exclusive access to the yacht, and we can reveal for the first time its name, Sailing Yacht A , and that this huge new project is a “sail-assisted motor yacht”.

This is the second yacht in Melnichenko’s portfolio. His first, Motor Yacht A , split opinion, but today stands as one of the most talked about and recognisable yachts in the world. But Sailing Yacht A is a much bolder move and Melnichenko has raised the stakes even higher with a radically designed yacht that introduces new technologies and techniques never before used in the shipbuilding industry. He also broke down barriers by creating his own project team to undertake the build from start to finish. Sailing Yacht A is a monument to invention.

Philippe Starck , who created Motor Yacht A , and from there went on to design Venus for the late Steve Jobs, is working once again for Andrey and Aleksandra Melnichenko on the project. “I am honoured and happy to bring to life the owner’s dream of what will be the summit of high technology and poetry,” says Starck.

Sailing Yacht A is a unique story that began as far back as 2008 when eight of the world’s leading designers were invited to submit their ideas for a huge project – the creation of one of the world’s biggest sail-assisted private yachts. Initially, French designer Jacques Garcia was chosen for his designs, but later there were concerns about the progress of design development, and the owner decided on a change of direction.

Sailing Yacht A is slated for delivery in 2016, although her masts were not stepped when Boat International was invited on board in July. The interior was also under wraps, but here we can take a look at some of her incredible statistics.

She is a three-masted, 142.81 metre (LOA) sail-assisted motor yacht, with a moulded beam at the widest point of 24.88 metres, an eight metre encapsulated keel and a gross tonnage of approximately 12,700GT. For a vessel of this size it was a challenge to find a shipyard that had the capacity, knowledge and skills to put together the naval architecture and engineering for the motor yacht side of the project. The one chosen, given its skills in building large yachts, was Nobiskrug in Germany.

For the sailing design, rig and keel, and associated structural engineering, Dykstra Naval Architects  in The Netherlands was appointed for its advanced technical abilities demonstrated on various world-class sailing yachts. Aloft Sailing Yacht A carries three of the largest and most highly loaded composite freestanding structures in the world produced by Magma Structures in the UK. The custom booms were made by Future Fibres in Valencia, and the custom sails by Doyle Sails in the USA.

With a hull and superstructure predominantly constructed of steel and incorporating composite and accents of carbon fibre, in order to keep the weight and draught to an acceptable level, Sailing Yacht A is the highest classified vessel of her type: (Maltese Cross) 100A1 Passenger ship Sail Assisted, (Maltese Cross) LMC UMC and (Maltese Cross) 100A1 Yacht Mono G6.

Propulsion comes from a customised hybrid diesel-electric package made up of two MTU 3,600kW diesel engines, and two 4,300kW electric motors, driving shafts ending in highly skewed five-bladed Andritz controllable pitch propellers. She is expected to cruise under power at 16 knots with an expected range of 5,320 nautical miles and will have a top speed of 21 knots.

With her uninterrupted shard-like appearance she carries her eight decks aft along the sheerline, which slopes up towards the stern, reaching a full beam width of 24.88 metres at the widest point. All her machinery is hidden within the hull structure, and as you can see, everything, including the windows, are flush. The bridge control centre for propulsion and sailing systems is on deck seven and there is a touch-and-go helicopter pad on deck six. There is accommodation available for up to 54 crew.

There are many more technical advances, innovations and surprises throughout her hull, decks and keel, which Boat International will reveal, in detail, in an exclusive feature in the November issue.

Boat of the Week: This 164-Foot Sailing Yacht Blends Traditional Indonesian Design With Modern Decor

The 164-foot Vela was built by hand, but the owners mandated it have modern amenities including a huge master suite.

“We realized that most high-end phinisis lack a quality of finish and attention to detail,” Tran told Robb Report . “We wanted to build a boat that feels like it belongs in Indonesia but to standards that are more comparable to a superyacht in the Mediterranean.”

At 164 feet in length, Vela is one of the largest phinisis on the water. It is also one of the narrowest, with an elongated sleek hull and double keel that gives the boat weight under the waterline. Designed by naval architect Tresno Seery—son of the late Patti Seery who is credited with pioneering the luxury phinisi charter industry— Vela is hydrodynamic, efficient and stable.

The 164-foot Vela was built by hand, but the owners mandated it have modern amenities including a huge master suite.

“We held a lot of respect for Tresno from the beginning,” says Tran. “The two boats created by his mother, Silolona and Si Datu Bua —the second of which he spent a year living in Sulawesi following the progress of the build—are hugely impressive. He has hands-on experience of indigenous craftsmanship and yet is an American educated naval engineer.”

Vela ’s weight and stability are reinforced by its masts and rigging, among the tallest of all phinisis, while boasting the largest sail surface of nearly 7,000 square feet of sail.

While the owners’ approach to design pushes into the contemporary, their choice of build process was wholly authentic, eschewing modern shipyards in favor of the traditional Bugis-Makassar boatbuilding technique. Vela was custom built by hand on the beach in South Sulawesi with only limited tooling. Once complete, the boats are pulled by hand into the water using chains. It took one month to splash Vela . “When you build a wooden boat in the west, the ribs are constructed first and then you add the skin,” says Tran. “In Indonesia, they build the outer skin first and add the ribs. The technical skills required to balance the boat and ensure port and starboard sides match exactly, without having the ribs to guide your work, is incredible.”

Indonesian teak is used for Vela ’s decking, ironwood for the hull, while the traditional twin masts are made from carbon. Typically, phinisis don’t feature a boom for the main sail, yet Vela bucks the trend, doubling as a convenient crane to lift the yacht’s toys and tenders in and out of the water.

Inside is a refined and contemporary interior. A formal salon is the yacht’s only indoor dining option, with nearly all meals taking place outdoors on the main deck forward and aft. Two master suites on the main and upper decks are joined by four generously sized guest cabins on the lower deck, all with ensuites that feature white marble and green tiles made by Balinese ceramics specialist, Gaya. White linen and fabrics by Italian brands, such as Dedar and Rubelli, are paired with hand-woven plant fabrics, traditional kimonos and decorative throw pillows made from natural plant-based indigo.

For the 15 pieces of art on the walls, the owners collaborated with three of Indonesia’s leading contemporary galleries. “Our mandate was to showcase up-and-coming talent and highlight what Indonesian contemporary art is today,” says Tran.

In calm waters when the yacht is at anchor, guests gather on the top deck—or “stargazing deck”—where low balustrades and lounging sofas connect them with the beauty of Indonesia’s cruising grounds.

Since recently taking delivery, Tran and Porter have enjoyed a 10-day Indonesian cruise with friends, with fireworks and beach barbecues to celebrate. As Vela is built with charter in mind, the pair now have their sights set on more phinisi builds, smaller in size to accommodate couples and families, but always striking a careful balance between old world and new.

Vela’s owners are also the creative forces behind Nirjhara, a luxury resort in Tanah Lot, Bali. You can expect the same eco-chic design ethos onboard the yacht. Rich teak wood contrasts beautifully with the white and cream upholstery and cushions. Huge windows let natural light into the elegant dining room and the lounge, which has a bar and wine cellar. The expansive wooden decks have areas for outdoor dining, as well as large sofas and daybeds for sunbathing and scanning the horizon. There is also a yoga deck where you can do sun salutations or meditate amidst sea breezes.

Vela has six contemporary cabins that can sleep up to 12 guests. Each suite has luxurious teak furnishings, Hermès and Dedar fabrics, and a gorgeous ensuite with marble counters and handmade ceramics. The owner’s suite spans 40 square metres and includes a king-size bed, an oversized bathtub, and a private terrace that offers 180-degree views. The master cabin is 35-square-metres, and like the owner’s suite, it has a king bed, as well as modern conveniences like a 55-inch Smart TV and Sonance ceiling speakers. The four remaining staterooms are peaceful and private sanctuaries with king or twin beds.

Business Wire

NEW YORK--( BUSINESS WIRE )-- VELA , a pioneering French company innovating in 100% wind-powered maritime transport, is proud to announce a significant funding round of €40 million ($43 million USD)—a round led by Crédit Mutuel Impact , 11th Hour Racing & BPI - French Public Investment Bank .

“This major fundraising marks a key step in VELA's development. We are proud to have brought together such a high-quality panel of Franco-American partners who share our ambition to make transport more sustainable, underlining the importance of our transatlantic vision,” said Michael Fernandez-Ferri, Managing Director and Chairman of VELA. “Together, we are entering a new era where capital serves the green revolution. This sailing cargo trimaran symbolizes our vision of a world combining innovation, sustainability, and humanity. We warmly thank our financial partners for their trust and support.”

This strategic financing will allow VELA to take a significant new step in its development by officially launching the building of its first vessel with the Australian shipyard, Austal , and strengthening its sales and operations teams in France and the United States.

AN AMBITIOUS VISION ADDRESSING CLIMATE AND SOCIAL URGENCY

Since its launch in November 2022, VELA has been working to address the climate emergency by providing an innovative, sustainable, and socially responsible maritime transportation solution. VELA's commitment goes beyond reducing CO2 emissions. With a desire to have a positive social impact, the company places seafarers at the heart of its project. With ships flying the French flag, VELA sailors will benefit from French social protection. VELA also stands out in the market with its comprehensive offer, providing shippers with a fast, reliable, and high-quality service.

A UNIQUE TRIMARAN FOR A FAST TRANSPORTATION OFFERING

With the launch of the building of the world's largest sailing cargo trimaran, VELA is making a grand entrance into the world of maritime transport. Drawing inspiration from air freight, this unique vessel, nicknamed the “L’avion des Mers” - The Sea Plane - will offer unprecedented fast transit times. Benefiting from technology transfers from offshore racing, it will allow transatlantic crossings of less than 15 days (loading - crossing - unloading) 100% under sail while guaranteeing exceptional reliability of deadlines and high standards for transport quality. This is a unique alternative to transport valuable products such as industrial parts, healthcare equipment, cosmetics, or pharmaceuticals so they can avoid having inventory on the water for so long.

The trimaran's holds will be maintained at a controlled temperature to meet the needs and constraints of the most demanding clients in fields such as pharmaceuticals, thus ensuring the safety and integrity of high-value-added transported goods.

Sabine Schimel, Managing Director at Crédit Mutuel Impact

“The financing of the blue economy, and more specifically of the decarbonization of the maritime sector, is a major priority of the Environmental and Solidarity Revolution Fund. We are very proud to back the cofounders of VELA in building this first sailing cargo trimaran and contributing to the emergence of such a French technology field of excellence.”

Jeremy Pochman, CEO and Co-Founder of 11th Hour Racing

“At 11th Hour Racing, we are deeply committed to advancing sustainable solutions that transform industries and protect our ocean. This investment in VELA as an innovative, sail-based shipping technology perfectly aligns with our mission of reducing carbon emissions and improving efficiency in global supply chains. We are proud to be joining forces with a solid founding team led by world-class sailor François Gabart. We believe that our collaboration and innovation can pave the way together for a more sustainable future for both the maritime sector and our planet.”

Jean-Marie Fougeray, Investment Director at Bpifrance

“With the shipbuilding of the largest sailing cargo trimaran in the world, VELA addresses the major challenge of decarbonizing the maritime sector while offering an innovative, sustainable, and high-quality transportation solution. We are very happy to hold VELA as our first investment for the maritime sector decarbonization fund. This project perfectly aligns with the ambitions of the Climate Plan of Bpifrance and with the thesis of this new fund: foster the decarbonization of maritime freight with complementary partners.”

A GLOBALLY RECOGNIZED SHIPYARD

After an international tender in which more than thirty shipyards participated, VELA, assisted by BRS Shipbrokers, selected the Australian shipyard, Austal, known worldwide for its expertise in multihull and aluminum builds. The first VELA Trimaran will thus benefit from the most advanced skills and unparalleled experience in the field. Austal will also benefit from the expertise of the offshore racing team MerConcept in sailing systems. The vessel will be constructed by Austal Philippines in Balamban, Cebu, and is scheduled to be delivered in the second half of 2026. VELA is committed to ensuring ethical and fair labor practices throughout the construction process. To this end, a dedicated VELA representative will be on-site to monitor working conditions, supplementing the certifications already obtained by the shipyard Austal. In addition, the French companies will carry out 30% of the construction, including rigging, sails, and hydro-generators, thus fully supporting the excellence and know-how of the national sailing industry.

"Austal is excited to partner with VELA on this groundbreaking project. Our expertise in multihull design and aluminum shipbuilding, combined with VELA's innovative vision, will create a revolutionary sailing cargo trimaran,” said Austal Limited Chief Executive Officer Paddy Gregg . “This vessel will set new speed, reliability, and sustainability standards for transatlantic shipping. We're proud to contribute to decarbonizing the maritime industry and look forward to transforming international cargo transportation for a greener future.”

THE FIRST EXPRESS MARITIME LINE BETWEEN FRANCE AND THE UNITED STATES

VELA is positioning itself on the first maritime line between France's Atlantic coast and the East Coast of the United States. The line will begin operations in the second half of 2026 and offer a fast, reliable, secure, and decarbonized connection for high-value-added goods. Its clients come from various sectors, including fashion, wines and spirits, custom and artisanal products, food, medical supplies, and high technology.

With a growing demand for sustainable transport solutions, VELA also anticipates development towards more consumer products. Normandy and New Aquitaine, strategic territories for VELA, play a key role in this development, with departure ports in these regions reinforcing VELA's commitment to offering decarbonized solutions closest to its customers.

VELA's ambition doesn't stop there. At least four additional ships are in preparation for arrival by 2027-2028, which will allow for increased departure frequency and reach a rhythm of one departure per week.

yacht a vela a
