Skippered Yacht charter in Cornwall, Devon and the Isles of Scilly

Cornwall and Devon are also called the English Riviera, and for good reason, because it is beautiful here. Perhaps it is even more beautiful than the French Riviera, because the hills are greener and the water just as clear and azure blue. It is also a true sailing paradise. Often there is a fresh breeze and a long swell of the Atlantic Ocean. The harbors are all equally pleasant. The locals are friendly and helpful. If the wind allows it, it is possible to sail to the Isles of Scilly. From the UK’s most south-westerly point, it’s a day’s boat out into the ocean before anchoring in arguably Europe’s most remote archipelago.

Newquay is the closest airport.

The ports are fairly close from each other, so that nice day trips can be made to ports like: Dartmouth, Salcombe, Looe, Falmouth and, weather permitting, to the Isles of Scilly.

If you would book a yacht through me and hire me as your charter skipper or sailing instructor , you can enjoy your sailing holiday in a safer and more relaxed way and for those who wish: improve their sailing skills and knowledge.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information and a no-obligation quote.

YOUR SAILING AREA

Cornwall & the isles of scilly, uk.

With some of the clearest, warmest waters the UK has to offer, the Isles of Scilly is the perfect destination for a sailing holiday! Walk barefoot on sandy shores, spot marine life and seabirds galore and experience the charming history of the UK’s most southerly archipelago – there is no better way to see this beautiful destination than by boat. Our main aim will be to make the 28-mile crossing over the Isles of Scilly with a fair weather window but if the weather is not in favour then an alternative sailing plan will be decided to explore the wonders of the coast of Cornwall instead.

Spend your days with a fine balance of fair-wind sailing and onshore exploration. The sunny and mild weather means you’ll be able to laze about on the beach with a book or enjoy a quiet walk around one of the many uninhabited islands before returning to the comfort of Emma Claire for dinner.

the isles of Scilly

These stunning islands feature large stretches of deserted white sandy beaches, dramatic rocky coves, stunning seascapes, amazing archaeological sites, beautiful walks and scenery along miles of coastal and country paths and nature trails. Remember to pack your swimsuits too, as the Isles of Scilly boasts some of the clearest water in the UK which makes for beautiful open-water bathing.

Out of the 55 islands, just 5 are inhabited and each has its distinct character. Tresco is home to a beautiful botanical garden, which has some exotic rare plants unable to grow anywhere else in the UK.  Sampson has been uninhabited since 1855, is known as the haunted island and is steeped in folklore. The beaches of St Martins are some of the best in the world and Bryher is dotted with lagoons and rocky outcrops. St Agnes is the artisan island bursting with creativity while St Mary’s is the “capital” with the largest population. Depending on the weather you’ll be able to visit where you like, as each of them is accessible easily by boat.

Anchor up in crystal clear waters before hopping aboard the tender to explore the islands ashore. Once you have crossed to the Scillies, the main focus will be to give guests the chance to explore the islands.

Wildlife Watching

The Isles of Scilly are a haven for wildlife, especially migratory seabirds who often nest here. It’s a birdwatcher’s dream, so bring your binoculars and your guidebook. You’ll most likely encounter seals somewhere along the way as they love the rocky shores, and you may be lucky enough to be joined by dolphins as you make the sea crossings there or back. Puffins are some of the Scillies’ most famous inhabitants, but they’re increasingly rare these days so keep those eyes peeled.

Private charter Sailing

With the wind and weather in mind, Chris can be flexible to the wishes of your group. You can guide on how many sailing hours to shore time you would like. Younger families may wish for a more relaxed voyage, whereas more experienced sailors may want longer hours under sail – the choice is yours.

You can get involved as much or as little as you’d like on board Emma Claire. Experienced skipper Chris will be on hand to show guests the ropes if they wish. Learn basic sail theory, hone your skills in chart reading or just simply relax on deck with a good book and watch the world glide by!

Guest berths: 4 Rig: Masthead Sloop

Offering guests bespoke private charter sailing holidays around Devon, Cornwall, France and the Caribbean, Emma Claire is a modern yacht owned and skippered by RNLI coxswain Chris and his wife Bryony. Sleeping six guests in comfortable private cabins, she is the perfect size for small groups of friends or family looking for that unique holiday experience.

Built in 1996, she has technically passed into her “vintage” era but continues to showcase her Italian design and build very well. She has been lovingly maintained over the years, and you’d be hard pushed to find another model of her age in such good condition.

With a modern winched masthead sloop rig, sailing her is straightforward; Chris can comfortably sail her single-handedly. That being said, she is a great boat to learn the sailing basics; hoisting, winching, taking the helm and some basic navigation can all be taught if guests wish. Her hull shape and sloop rig make her a comfortable and stable boat to sail on, so she makes a great boat for coastal sailing for those wanting to try something new and learn the ropes.

Below Decks

The perfect size for bespoke private charters, Emma Claire can sleep up to four guests in a combination of two double cabins and a twin bunk cabin. There are two bathrooms, both with pull out showers (if needed) and a generous saloon with cushioned seating, dining table and a well-equipped galley.

Above decks, she has a comfy cockpit and plenty of deck space to sit back, take in the coastal views, feel the salt air in your hair and relax into the rhythms of life on the water.

Life on board Emma Claire

Sailing with modern yacht Emma Claire is perfect for small groups of friends or families looking for a  unique group holiday experience on the water. Offering bespoke private charter sailing along the southwest coast of Devon and Cornwall, Brittany and even winters in the Caribbean, Emma Claire can sleep up to four guests in private cabins.

Emma Claire is a great-sized boat for beginners and small families alike looking for a skippered sailing charter in a safe environment. Skipper Chris is an RNLI coxswain for Salcombe lifeboat so his experience and relaxed nature make sailing with him a real pleasure.

GETTING INVOLVED

Emma Claire’s rig is simple and modern, running on an electric winch system, so there is no hauling old ropes on this boat! She’s a great boat for guests to get a taste of comfortable modern rig sailing. Skipper Chris is more than happy to get guests involved and show them the ropes.

From basic sail theory to taking the helm and helping with anchoring, there is always plenty to do on board even if you’ve never stepped foot on a boat before. That being said, if guests just want to experience the relaxed rhythms of life on the water and switch off from the demands of the modern world, then that’s also encouraged in equal measure!

SLEEPING AND RELAXATION

Above decks, there is ample space to sit out, relax and enjoy the views. The comfy cockpit is a great place to sit and watch the landscape go by as you feel the wind in the sails. Emma Claire also has a stand-up paddle board and an inflatable canoe for guests to use while on anchor along with fishing lines if you fancy your hand at catching some dinner!

Below decks, there is a generous saloon with a large sofa area, dining table and galley. There are three private cabins (2x double and 1x twin) and two saloon bunks all sharing two well-appointed toilets. Each toilet has a pull-out shower if and as needed but most showers will be taken onshore in the marina facilities.

As each voyage is a bespoke private charter, the food will be considered and planned based on the group’s needs and requirements. Chris’ wife Bryony is a trained chef who used to run her own catering company so you will certainly be well fed while aboard!

Emma Claire has limited space for possessions so please be considerate and travel as light as possible. There is no storage for rigid cases so please bring your items in a soft bag or rucksack.

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those who have sailed before may have their preferences!

  • Walking boots/shoes for onshore & light shoes/trainers (with good grip)
  • Swimsuit and swim towel (if you’re brave enough!)
  • Lightweight, quick-dry clothes (base layers, fleece and synthetic tops are both lightweight and quick-drying)

It can be quite a few degrees colder out at sea so please bring lots of layers even if the forecast seems like a warm week.

  • Warm, windproof and waterproof coat/lightweight trousers. (Chris has some offshore sailing jackets if needed)
  • Sun cream ( please use reef-safe, eco products where possible )
  • Sunglasses and a warm hat/cap
  • Small personal first aid kit and any medication you may need
  • Camera/binoculars
  • Personal wash kit ( please use reef-safe, eco products where possible )

is one of the major sailing centres in Cornwall. It is situated on the south coast of Cornwall between Plymouth and Falmouth and is about 20 miles from each when sailing. The town Fowey stretches for about a mile along the west bank of the River Fowey to the mouth of the river. A passenger ferry runs across the river to the village of Polruan on the opposite bank. The busy harbour has a mix of commercial shipping involved in the export of the locally quarried china clay, many yachts and occasionally a large cruise liner. Fowey has an interesting history and much can be learnt about the town by visiting the Museum. Or, during the summer season, take a guided walk on a Tuesday morning. Other places of interest in and around Fowey include; the two block houses on either side of the harbour entrance, built around 1380, between which a chain was hung to prevent the entry of unfriendly ships into the harbour. Polruan blockhouse may be visited on foot. The harbour contains both swing moorings and floating pontoons. Contact Fowey Harbour Patrol on VHF Channel 12 when entering the port. A water taxi serves the harbour moorings, between Easter and November, and can be contacted on VHF Channel 6 or telephone +44(0) 7774 906703. Visiting yacht crews are welcome to use the facilities of the Fowey Gallants Sailing Club and the Royal Fowey Yacht Club.

Harbour is a 200 year old Georgian china clay port and home to Square Sail's 3 Square Riggers. The harbour has lock gates open 1 hour before HW. SE & S winds cause heavy swells that can affect operation of lock.

Harbour is primarily a fishing Harbour. The village dates from the 15th century. If approaching from south a wide berth of Citadel Point is recommended. Approach to harbour is straightforward, but a sharp lookout should be maintained for static fishing gear in bay. The harbour entrance should be approached at low speed, no more than 3 knots. If the wind is from the East and exceeds force 3 it is strongly recommended to use Fowey as an alternative.

is situated on the River Truro at the head of the tidal estuary of the Fal. The spire-topped towers of Truro Cathedral, the central tower is 76 metres high, built between 1880 and 1910, dominate the town. Many Georgian buildings survive from Truro's prosperous tin and copper mining days. The Royal Cornwall Museum has a good collection of paintings by local artists. For Truro follow navigation buoys marking the deep water channel up the Fal Estuary from the entrance. Carrick Maritime Section runs the visitors quays in Truro, including Town Quay, Worths Quay and Garras Wharf. The Upper Quays of Truro are tidal and access is restricted to vessels with a draft of not more than approximately 2m. Malpas Marine has berths.

is a major yachting location in Cornwall and sits on the shoreline of the third largest natural harbour in the world. The Cornwall Maritime Museum tells the storey of Falmouth's nautical history. Many gardens are worth viewing and the subtropical climate supports the growth of many varieties of plants. The following are well worth a visit; Fox Rosehill, Queen Mary, Kimberley Park and Gyllyngdune are in Falmouth and those of Trelissick, Glendurgan and Trebah are all reached with ease. Pendennis Castle stands on the nearby headland of Pendennis Point, built by King Henry VIII between 1539-64 as a defence against the French. Today, the Castle, with its fine views across to the headlands of St Mawes and the Lizard Peninsula, stages battle re-enactments, jousting tournaments and concerts. There are several marinas offering berths. Trevissome House Marine has moorings. In the harbour are 18 visitors moorings marked with green buoys. A harbour launch will direct you to a suitable mooring. Do not berth at the Custom House Quay or Prince of Wales Pier steps as commercial vessels use these. If anchoring keep the fairways and channels clear. Do not anchor in vicinity of the docks or small craft mooring areas.

is the largest town in west Cornwall and the most westerly town in England and overlooks Mount's Bay. In the bay is St Michael's Mount, a small circular granite island that can be reached by a causeway at low tide. The island rises to about 100 metres and an ancient castle and monastery sit on top. Penzance has many old buildings dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The National Lighthouse Museum follows the history of local lighthouses that have directed ships away from the rocky, dangerous coastline for centuries. The Penzance Maritime Museum has an interesting collection of nautical memorabilia. The area around Penzance is a mix of high granite cliffs and white sandy beaches; many subtropical plants thrive due to the mild climate. A large number of prehistoric burial mounds and stones can be seen in the area, as can the extensive remains of Bronze Age villages. Penzance Harbour has 50 berths for visiting yachts. Access is tidal and lock gates are manned on every tide, 7 days a week, from 2 hours before high water until on hour after high water.

is home to the largest fleet of fishing boats in the South of England. The Pilchard Museum shows how this little fish, which was once a major part of the local economy, was processed and packed for shipment to destinations worldwide. Penlee House has a collection of paintings from the Newlyn School. The school flourished during the late 19th century, inspiring artists such as Stanhope Forbes to capture the local area on canvas. If approaching Newlyn harbour from the E stay well to the S of Gear rock. From the W an E cardinal buoy marks Low Lea shoal. 3 cables to the NW a second shoal, Carn Base, is unmarked. Approach between 240ºT and 335ºT. Once inside Newlyn harbour head for the SW side of the central pier where you will be asked to tie up alongside the pier or a fishing boat.

lie about 25 miles off the southwest coast of Cornwall. There are 140 small islands and rocks of which only five are inhabited: St Mary's, Tresco, St Martin's, St Agnes and Bryher. The capital is Hugh Town, situated on a narrow sandbar on the south western side of the island of St Mary's. Yachts can moor or anchor St Mary's harbour. There is an anchorage at Old Grimsby on the eastern side of Tresco. There are moorings and an anchorage in Great Bay on the northern side of St Martin's. The cove on the western side of St Agnes is an almost landlocked bay and makes for a good anchorage.

. All this said, the prudent skipper, prior to embarking on the charter, will make sure the yacht is furnished with the appropriate, up to date, charts and pilotage notes for the area they are intending to sail in.

“I chartered Devon Sailing Experiences’ yacht, Bewitched, for two days at sea, with a skipper. Mick was absolutely BRILLIANT with the children, their ages being 14, 11, 10 and 9. He was quickly able to assess their abilities, strengths, fears and concerns then appropriately adapt what was being asked of them. To be honest, I was slightly apprehensive about the cost. However, that concern was ill-founded and the experience was worth every penny!”

Salcombe Sailing Adventures

Skippered yacht charters on the south devon and cornwall coast.

Single or multi-day adventures for families, individuals or small groups, in our beautiful Italian designed Grand Soleil Yacht.

Absolutely no sailing experience is necessary, but more experienced sailors are of course welcome. You may wish to brush up on your skills, get involved with the route planning, helming, and all other aspects of handling a yacht. Alternatively, you may wish to do nothing but bask in the sun and look out for dolphins, seals and krakens. It is entirely up to you.

If you want to sail away from the crowds, learn the ropes with one of Salcombes most experienced skippers, explore hidden coves and beaches, take advantage of our extensive local knowledge then read on.

We offer day sails and multiple sailing holidays, bespoke experiences for those who have something completely different in mind.
