Shallow Water Draft Makes Stiletto Ideally Suited to the Outer Banks

With only a 10″ draft, there are no waters too shallow for a Stiletto Catamaran, and this means she is perfectly suited to the shallow waters of the Outer Banks. Stiletto can take you through all the back water bays for clamming, fishing, and shelling and even right up onto the beach because Stiletto is beachable. If you see the perfect little private beach we can pull her right up on the sand giving you perfect access during your charter sailing the OBX.

Competitive Speeds Take You Farther Through the Outer Banks

See more of the waters and beaches you love on Stiletto. The Stiletto catamaran is an innovative design produced from some of the world’s lightest materials and designed for sailing fast. She can reach speeds up to 30 knots, but averages 10-14 in moderate breeze. Never again will you think of stodgy, slow, old boats when you hear, “Let’s go for a sailing trip”.

Stiletto was made for fast, shallow water adventure. So hang on tight and get ready for the ride of your life!

Sail the Outer Banks with us on our 41 ft Gulfstar!  We sail from the downtown Manteo Waterfront located on Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Our sail charters are sunset cruises and are available for 2-1/2 hours, with glorious sunsets over the water as we return to the Manteo Waterfront!    Enjoy a private sail charter with us, up to 6 guests,  sailing on the Roanoke and Albemarle Sounds.

And yes, a private sail charter means just that, it will be just you and your family/friends, we do not put other people on board 'to fill the boat up".  It's your cruise, your boat!  Feel free to roam about the boat while we are underway, we have found that couples really enjoy sitting on the foredeck under the genoa (forward sail), with only the sound of the breeze through the sails and the splash of water on the bow.

If you have interest in sailing the boat we enjoy letting people have a turn at the helm, adjusting lines, learning how to work the chart plotter and radar. Feel free to bring your own food and drinks, people usually will bring a cooler with them.  We are pet friendly! Sunset Sails return back to the Manteo Waterfront right at sunset, rates are $100 per person ($350 minimum) up to 6 guests. Call (252) 473-2719 for reservations. Our Outer Banks Cruises leave the Manteo Waterfront Marina, our slip is at the end of Budleigh St, behind Poor Richard's Restaurant and the Tranquil House Hotel ( see photos at right).

Let's go sailing!

If you schedule and the weather is iffy, we will call that day to confirm, no charge for cancelling due to weather.

Private Sail Charters!

Enjoy a great day of OBX sailing with your friends, and see the Outer Banks from the water!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gratuity included in my charter fee.

Gratuity is not included in your charter fee. Customary gratuity is 15%.

Where do I meet the boat for boarding and do we get off at the same place?

Can I bring more than 6 total guests?

Each boat can only take up to 6 guests. If you have a larger group, book a flotilla. We can accommodate up to 12 guests with a Flotilla Sail, where we sail two identical boats together. Such a fun experience, many options for extra fun with two boats. Check out our flotilla sailing .

  • Click here to learn more about multiple boat charters: https://phillipsboatworks.com/charters/adding-a-second-stiletto-27-to-our-outer-banks-sailing-fleet/

When should I arrive at the dock?

Please arrive just a few minutes before your charter begins. You will find the start time of your charter on your receipt. Often, particularly in the heat of the summer season, our skippers are often taking a water break and will arrive just a few minutes before your charter. It only takes a couple minutes to board and shove off.

Where do we meet the boat and captain?

Most of our charters leave from the Buxton Harbor Hatteras Sailing Center at 48962 NC-12, Hatteras, NC 27953 . However, sometimes due to the weather we may depart from other locations. Your skipper will be in touch with you before your charter if there is any weather related start location change. Note: Our boat shop and sail repair are in a different location, but we are usually around 😉

Can children come on the boat?

Of course. We love kids, and have 3 of our own. Please bring your own lifejackets for children. Safety is so important to little ones, and according to the US Coast Guard regulations they are required to wear a life jacket at all times on the boat. The life vest should be comfortable enough that they will wear it and fit them appropriately.

Can I bring a cooler and drinks?

Please bring water and drinks. Alcoholic beverages are allowed, but your captain reserves the right to stop serving if a guest becomes a danger or annoyance to the other guests.

Please do not bring a cooler. We have a cooler and ice is provided. Whether you are an adult or a child, it is a good idea to bring along a lidded cup to prevent messy spills.

If you are on a private charter, you may bring food of whatever sort you like. If you are on a shared charter feel free to bring “neat” snacks.

What do I need to bring with me on my charter?

  • Hats, sunglasses, drinks, water shoes or boat safe shoes
  • Dress in layers for morning and evening charters. Early mornings and evenings can be chilly with the breeze particularly if you are wet from swimming.
  • Sunblock and a hat are essential even on cloudy days
  • Camera, phone, waterproof protection for your devices
  • Please wear boat safe shoes or plan to stay barefoot. You may not wear street shoes on the boat.
  • If you are susceptible to seasickness, plan to take motion sickness medication before your trip.

Advance Reservations

You may book a charter up to 12 weeks in advance.

If you reserve your charter more than 3 days in advance, our system prompts you to pay a set reservation fee which reserves the charter for your party. Three days prior to our sail, the final balance becomes due. You will receive an invoice with a link which you can click to pay the final charter fee.

If you book within 3 days of your charter, a full charter fee is required upon reservation.

Weather Policy

We sail in 0-20 knots, and light, spotted showers. We do not sail over 25knots or when it is lightening. While this is our general guideline, all charters are held at the captain’s discretion and he considers all factors.

If the charter you have reserved is cancelled due to inclement weather, we will do our best to reschedule your sail during your stay here on the Outer Banks. If for some reason, we cannot agree a time to make up the charter, we will refund your charter fee less the credit card transaction fees (~3.5%).

Beverage Policy

We provide a cooler with ice. You may bring alcoholic beverages on board. We reserve the right to terminate your charter with no refund if members of your party become unsafe due to excessive alcohol consumption. Underage members of your party may not drink while on board the sailboat.

Private Bookings Only

Due to current Covid-19, we do not offer per person charters at this time.

Lifejackets

Children are very welcome aboard, but per the coast guard children under 12 must be in a life jacket while on board the sailboat. You must bring an appropriately sized life jacket for each child. We do not have the boat equipped with child sized life jackets.

The boat is stocked with coast guard required adult lifejackets. The adult life jackets we supply are not particularly comfortable to wear. If you feel you need to wear a lifejacket while on board, please bring one that is comfortable for wearing.

Yacht Rental North Carolina

One might ponder, why indeed would an adventurer select the seemingly tranquil North Carolina waters to charter a yacht, when they could seek the azure expanses of the Mediterranean or the exotic depths of the South Pacific? There's a peculiar allure to these Atlantic coastal waters, not unlike the hypnotic patterns on a Northern Cardinal's plumage, enchanting, captivating, and yet wholly unexpected.

The Nautical Call of the Tar Heel State

Yacht Rental North Carolina

The magic of North Carolina lies in its diversity. Not merely terrestrial, but maritime as well. The waters here oscillate between the tranquil ripples of inland rivers and the grand swells of the open ocean, each offering a unique tableau of aquatic experiences. From the Cape Fear River, with its winding path and historic charm, to the sprawling banks of the Neuse and Pamlico, North Carolina's waterways are as variegated as the shifting sands of its beaches.

Aboard a yacht, one gets to witness this splendor from an unparalleled vantage point. It's akin to soaring through the rainforest canopy, glimpsing the intricate tapestry of life beneath, yet being part of a separate, ethereal realm. Hence, renting a yacht in North Carolina is not simply a voyage, but an intimate dance with the very essence of the state.

Unveiling the Hidden Gems: Places to Visit with a Yacht in North Carolina

Navigating through the waters of North Carolina in a chartered yacht is akin to embarking on a nature documentary, full of unexpected vistas and encounters. Here, we shall examine a collection of the most compelling stops along this maritime journey.

🚢 Cape Lookout National Seashore

Renowned as a nature-lover's sanctuary, the Cape Lookout National Seashore is a string of barrier islands located off the coast. With its signature black-and-white diamond patterned lighthouse standing sentinel, it's a haven for a variety of wildlife, from shorebirds like terns and oystercatchers to the vibrant sea turtles that frequent its shores. The quiet beauty of its waters, punctuated only by the occasional dolphin fin, offers a serene sojourn for those in search of tranquillity.

Dubbed as "America's Favorite Town" by Travel + Leisure, Beaufort, North Carolina is steeped in maritime history and charm. Nestled within the protected waters of the Beaufort Inlet, it offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. The historic waterfront town is home to the North Carolina Maritime Museum and a bounty of delectable seafood restaurants, while the nearby Rachel Carson Reserve hosts a diverse collection of estuarine species, including the iconic wild horses.

🚢 Wrightsville Beach

This family-friendly destination offers a mixture of leisure and excitement. The Intracoastal Waterway and the serene Masonboro Island are a stone’s throw away. Here, one might indulge in water sports, birdwatching, or simply lounging on the sun-dappled decks of their yacht, lulled by the gentle ebb and flow of the Atlantic tides.

🚢 Bald Head Island

Accessible only by ferry or private yacht, Bald Head Island is an unspoiled treasure on North Carolina's coast. Here, you can drop anchor and explore a network of walking trails that weave through maritime forests and sand dunes, culminating at the Old Baldy Lighthouse. The island is a refuge for a rich tapestry of wildlife, including deer, alligators, and myriad bird species, making it a veritable Eden for naturalists.

🚢 Pamlico Sound

As the largest lagoon along the North American East Coast, Pamlico Sound is a sprawling playground for sailors. It is dotted with charming islands, each with their own unique allure. Ocracoke Island, for instance, is famed for its wild ponies and quaint village, while Roanoke Island bears the historical legacy of the first English settlement in the New World.

🚢 Outer Banks

This 200-mile long string of narrow barrier islands is a must-visit for any maritime adventurer. The Outer Banks are home to some of the most secluded beaches on the East Coast, offering a tranquil retreat far from the madding crowd. Each island holds its own unique charm, from the wild horses of Corolla to the historic Graveyard of the Atlantic in Hatteras.

🚢 Morehead City

Nestled on the Crystal Coast, Morehead City is renowned for its vibrant port and the annual North Carolina Seafood Festival. Chartering a yacht here provides the opportunity to explore not only the bustling city waterfront but also the surrounding waters, including the Newport River and the Bogue Sound. The area is also a paradise for fishing enthusiasts, with its rich marine life.

🚢 The Intracoastal Waterway

The North Carolina section of the Intracoastal Waterway offers a unique exploration opportunity. This network of rivers, inlets, canals, and bays is like an aquatic highway, threading through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the state. Stopovers such as Swansboro, known as the "Friendly City by the Sea," provide charming glimpses of coastal life, while the vast expanse of the Albemarle Sound awaits with its stunning sunsets and tranquil waters.

🚢 Lake Norman

While not a coastal destination, Lake Norman offers a different kind of yachting experience. As the largest manmade body of water in North Carolina, it offers over 500 miles of shoreline to explore. The lake's vast expanse is dotted with islands and inlets, making it a perfect playground for boating enthusiasts. Here, one can enjoy the tranquility of the lake, the thrill of water sports, or the charm of the surrounding towns.

🚢 Southport

At the confluence of the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean, Southport is a quintessential maritime destination. This charming coastal town is renowned for its historic riverfront, maritime museum, and the annual North Carolina 4th of July Festival. The surrounding waters offer a diverse tableau, from the placid river to the open ocean, providing an enriching experience for every mariner.

With every new destination, the maritime landscape of North Carolina unfolds like a captivating narrative, inviting the explorer to delve deeper into its stories. So let the compass guide you, let the winds steer you, and let the infinite waters of North Carolina etch memories that will last a lifetime.

The Naturalist's Guide to Chartering: Considerations for a North Carolina Yacht Adventure

Yacht Rental North Carolina

Before embarking on your maritime adventure, however, one should not neglect the necessary precautions, much like a seasoned biologist preparing for a field study. The beauty of nature is matched by its unpredictability, and a prudent explorer respects this delicate balance.

⛵ Seasons and Weather

North Carolina's maritime climate is temperate, yet diverse. One must be mindful of this, akin to an ornithologist anticipating migratory patterns. The balmy summers offer serene conditions, perfect for lazy days of leisure aboard your yacht. Conversely, the winter months can be capricious, with the northern winds stirring the waters into a frothy challenge for any mariner.

⛵ Navigation

The geography of North Carolina's coastline, with its many estuaries and inlets, provides the explorer with both a vast playground and a complex labyrinth. Just as one might navigate the understory in a dense forest, understanding the local sea charts and tides is essential for a safe journey.

⛵ Flora and Fauna

The abundance of life in these waters is a treasure chest waiting to be discovered. Just as a botanist would relish the discovery of a new orchid species, so too will you marvel at the schools of bluefish, the playful dolphins, and the majestic ospreys that call these waters home. Nonetheless, respect their domain, for we are mere guests in this aquatic abode.

Choosing Your Marine Steed: The Best Yacht for North Carolina Waters

Choosing the appropriate vessel for your journey is akin to an entomologist selecting the right net for a butterfly expedition. Not every yacht is suitable for these diverse waters, and the right choice can make the difference between a memorable journey and a troubling ordeal.

Consider, for instance, the allure of a sailboat. Its elegance mirrors the grace of a heron in flight, and it moves with the wind, a silent observer of the marine world. Sailboats are ideal for the calm, inland waters of North Carolina, where the wind and current are allies, not adversaries.

However, for those seeking the thrill of the open ocean, a motor yacht is the marine equivalent of a sturdy jeep traversing the savannah. Robust, reliable, and offering a suite of modern comforts, these yachts are designed to weather the caprices of the Atlantic, offering a sturdy refuge amidst the marine wilderness.

To navigate North Carolina's waters is to step into a vibrant aquatic ballet, where every ripple tells a story and every sunset paints a memory. So whether you're a seasoned mariner or a curious adventurer, remember: The journey is the destination, and in North Carolina, the journey is always remarkable.

Posing Queries on the Voyage: Frequently Asked Questions

Embarking on a maritime journey, especially amidst the diverse waterscape of North Carolina, invariably brings with it a cascade of questions. Just as we marvel at the intricate patterns on a butterfly's wing or the elusive behavior of a lynx in the wild, so too might we ponder the nuances of chartering a yacht, navigating the waters, or understanding the local maritime regulations.

As we journey together through this aquatic tapestry, let us attempt to unravel some of these queries. Drawing from our collective experiences and insights, we shall endeavour to provide clarity to the frequently asked questions, transforming uncertainties into knowledge, much like turning the lens of a microscope to bring the minute details of a specimen into focus.

What qualifications do I need to rent a yacht?

In North Carolina, as in many other states, there are no strict licensing requirements to rent a yacht. However, most yacht rental companies require some evidence of boating experience. If you're not an experienced sailor, fear not. Many companies offer captains or guides who can handle the nautical intricacies while you sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Can I bring my pets on board?

The answer to this question is largely dependent on the individual yacht charter companies' policies. Some are quite welcoming of your furry friends, recognizing the joy they bring to a family adventure. However, others may have restrictions or additional fees. We would recommend contacting the charter company beforehand to clarify their pet policy.

What safety precautions should I take?

Much like a seasoned naturalist venturing into unexplored wilderness, safety should be paramount in your maritime journey. Ensure that the yacht is equipped with all necessary safety gear, including life jackets, first aid kits, flares, and fire extinguishers. Keep a close eye on the weather, and always inform someone ashore of your planned itinerary.

What should I pack for my yacht charter?

Think of packing for your yacht charter as preparing for a trek through diverse biomes. Essentials would include comfortable clothing suited to the climate, hats and sunglasses for sun protection, and waterproof gear. Don't forget your camera or binoculars, for North Carolina's waters are teeming with photo-worthy moments. And of course, pack a sense of adventure!

Can I fish from the yacht?

In general, fishing is permitted from charter yachts. However, bear in mind that North Carolina requires a fishing license for anyone aged 16 and above. Ensure that you adhere to local fishing regulations and respect the marine life, akin to the reverence a botanist would show when collecting rare plant specimens.

In our quest for understanding, let's remember that every question asked and answered brings us closer to a harmonious interaction with nature and our surroundings. Our voyage on North Carolina's waters is not merely a journey, but a conversation with the environment we traverse. As always, let's converse with respect, curiosity, and a profound appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.

Frequently Asked Questions

What options do you offer?

We offer 2, 4, 6 and 8 hour cruises/charters as well as local overnight charters, destination overnight charters, and overnight stays at our dock which is conveniently located in walking distance to the bars and restaurants downtown.

Where can I view pricing?

Most of our prices can be found by clicking this link , with the exception of our overnight bookings. We offer overnight bookings at the dock and on charter, and both of those options we quote out depending on your itinerary. Please email us through the contact form on the site or at [email protected] to learn more.

What itineraries can we do?

We have a number of itineraries available for you to choose from, and we will recommend some to you depending on the time of year and day which your cruise is, the predicted weather, and how long you book the yacht for. Some sample itineraries are a sunset cruise, a yacht party next to a nearby private island, a day trip to Bald Head Island, a yacht party at Masonboro Inlet, a cruise along Wrightsville Beach, or multiple day trips to Myrtle Beach, Ocracoke, Charleston and beyond.

What do I need to bring?

Guests should bring any alcohol or food they'd like to eat, we should have just about everything else like all necessary safety equipment, the crew, etc. Soft drinks, water and ice are included and already onboard.

When should I arrive?

We recommend arriving about 15 minutes prior to your departure time so that you can get settled and receive your safety briefing before we depart.

What if I have more than 13 people?

While the Coast Guard does not allow us to carry more than 13 guests at sea, we absolutely can have a dock party with more than 13 guests. While we won't be able to leave the dock, you can still party the night away on a yacht!

What's Included?

All bookings include fuel, docking fees, the cost of the captain, his mate, and full use of the yacht and its water toys which include 2 kayaks, 2 paddle boards, a floating dock, music throughout the boat and free internet, YoutubeTV and Netflix. If you hire the chef or hostess, their services and food will be included as well.

What's NOT Included?

The price online does NOT include tax, gratuity,  or alcohol. Food is not included unless you hire the chef. Lastly, we do not have any decorations onboard so please bring any decorations you wish to put up depending on your occasion.

Can we choose the time of our charter or cruise?

Yes, absolutely! Any time that you want to leave and return, we can make that happen!

What's NOT allowed?

While we want you to have the most amazing time aboard our beautiful yacht, a few things are strictly forbidden such as: Unsupervised Dock parties with more than the approved number of persons, sleeping more than 7 people onboard overnight, smoking, drugs, fireworks and flushing anything besides toilet paper down the toilets.

Where do I park and how much is it?

Complimentary parking is included and you will park in the Port City Marina parking. If there is a parking attendant there, let them know that you're there for a Carolina Yacht Charters cruise.

Are children and kids allowed?

While children and kids are allowed, please know that boats do present a safety risk to our kiddos. They must always wear a live preserver and should never be allowed outside without direct adult supervision.

What Add-Ons Are Available?

We have a number of things available to add on to your experience! All options must be quoted out depending on your party size and the length of your trip. Add-Ons include:

A chef, with all food included

A hostess to serve you and make drinks (included when you book the chef)

catamaran charter north carolina

Which boat should I choose? Well, both of our girls (boats) are amazing, but definitely show it off in different ways. "Le Bon Vie" is classy, elegant and sophisticated. She exudes sleek Italian design and offers you a cruise in unparalleled comfort. She is ideal for romantic getaways, birthday parties, bar hopping cruises and company functions.

While....... Her younger sister ship "Island Girl" just refuses to act right! She's fun, spunky and unconventional. Like her guests, she lets her hair down and lives for the moment enjoying the sunshine and sand. She attracts attention wherever she goes and definitely dances to the beat of her own tiki drum!

Island Vibes Charter offers several charter options, both private (you get the whole boat) and public (pull up a chair and meet some nice people!) all with the peace of mind of knowing that you will be taken care of by a U.S. Coast Guard certified master captain with years of experience boating on Lake Norman. Plus the comfort that comes with being aboard professionally maintained and operated vessels. Island Vibes boat rental and Charter is fully licensed and insured. Our charter boats set sail from All Seasons Marina and our rental boats and paddlesports operate from our docks at The Lake Norman Landing.

Captain Ronnie

Captain Ronnie

We are a legal charter operator that has undergone the rigorous certification and inspection process with the Lake Norman Marine Commission. Fully licensed and insured, we are compliant with all applicable state, local and federal regulations.

We only hire experienced US Coast Guard licensed captains. Your safety is our top priority.

We offer a much better boat! Many so-called charter operators on the lake operate on nothing more than an average pontoon boat with no way to escape the heat, no restroom facilities, and sometimes (oh the stories we hear) no running engine!

We offer a 5% discount for all police and active and retired military.

We also offer a 10% discount for guests staying at The Landing Hotel.
