You can choose from three different rigs for the new 36. The difference among them is horsepower.
The hulls share some numbers in addition to similar LOAs. Both boats weigh 12,000 pounds and have beams within an inch of each other at 11 feet, 6 inches and 11 feet, 7 inches. The biggest difference in basic dimensions is at the DWL. The old 36 had a DWL of 27 feet, 9 inches and the new 36 has a DWL of 30 feet for an additional 2.25 feet. This extra DWL brings the D/L down from 251 to 198.4. The plan view shows that while the beams are similar, the distribution of beam is distinctly different. The old 36 was still trying to keep its measured IOR length down with what we came to call "pinched ends." The new 36, on the other hand, has an extremely broad stern.
Looking at the rest of the hull shape, I can see a strange little kick to the counter profile aft. Generally, you like to keep the run/counter as flat as possible. Both hulls show small skegs in front of the rudders, but the newer 36 has a vertical rudder stock and a rudder that cuts off at the DWL and doesn't meet the counter.
The keel of the new 36 shows that we have come to fins with bulbs from the days of the old 36 when keels were bladelike fins. People want horsepower and you need stability to carry a big rig and the best way to increase stability is to put some type of bulb on the keel. Interestingly, the older fin-keeled 36 had 400 pounds more ballast than the newer fin-keeled model. There is also a wing keel, shoal draft model with 4 feet, 11 inches of draft and 5,225 pounds of ballast. Note, also, the difference in sweep angles of the keels.
Going below we see dramatic differences between the two boats. The arrangement plan differences are as marked, if not more marked, than are the hull shape differences. The old 36 is very typical of the layouts of the day, very boxlike with lots of 90 degree angles. The quarter berth of the old 36 is a double in the new 36, hinting at things to come.
The new 36 has a layout developed from the years of influence the European designs have had on us, such as the queen-sized quarter berth in its own separate stateroom. This puts pressure on the galley, so the new 36 has less counterspace. The head on the new boat is aft and includes a shower stall. The nav station is coupled to the starboard settee. Forward V-berths are history and the new 36 has a large double berth forward. Progress is wonderful. I would also like to know how much the layout had to do with the width of the stem on the newer design. I'm partial to the older layouts, but that's just me trying to hold on to the things I loved about boats as a boy. Interiors are so subjective.
You can choose from three different rigs for the new 36: the 36+ for cruising,, and the 36XL or 36R for racing. The difference among them is horsepower, with an SA/D of the hottest model-the 36R 20.94, compared to the 18.31 of the older model, which was considered relatively high at the time. The new rigs have triple spreaders and running backs. The old chopped-off E dimension so typical of the IOR has been replaced with a boom that can sheet to the aft end of the cockpit. The sailplans show this to be an exceptionally handsome design in every respect.

At the center of the C lies an atrium with floating stars and a lift without walls that allows seafarers to navigate decks in a novel fashion. Highlights of the living quarters include a duplex owner’s suite, a partially enclosed sea lounge that can be used at anchor or on the waves, a beach club with a sea-level dining area, and a private observation deck with an articulating crow’s nest. To top it off, C is outfitted with two infinity pools that match the hexagonal shape of the atrium and other seating areas.  C also shines on the technology front. She features a sleek hull and a fully electric propulsion system similar to sisterships Breathe and Savannah that renders her 30 percent more efficient than a typical 246-footer with dual shafts, propellers, and rudders, according to Feadship. Her streamlined underwater profile means less wake, too. C will also be equipped with fuel cells and lithium-metal batteries that will together cover all power needs. (Feadship has also incorporated fuel cells on Project 821 .) Green methanol will be the fuel of choice due to its relatively high density and ease of use. Normal cruising speed on the fuel cells is 14 knots, while a top speed of 17 knots can be achieved by adding the battery power.  Electric Candela hydrofoil boat sets world record by crossing Baltic Sea
 An all-electric hydrofoiling boat from Swedish company Candela has set two new world records by travelling between Stockholm and the Finnish autonomous region of Åland, marking the first time an electric boat has crossed the Baltic Sea. Candela, which has developed a range of electric hydrofoil boats and ships, wanted to demonstrate that “that zero-emission sea travel is not only possible today, but that foiling electric ships and boats are so much cheaper to operate than fossil-fuelled vessels.” The record-breaking journey was undertaken in the Candela C-8, a €330,000 ($A544,500) leisure craft, equipped with a battery from technology partner Polestar. The journey covered 150 nautical miles from the port of Frihamn in Stockholm, Sweden, to Mariehamn, the capital and largest town of the Åland Islands, an autonomous region of Finland, with a charging stop in Kapellskär. While charging along the trip was made mostly with existing charging infrastructure, a 40kW Kempower Movable Charger was needed in Kapellskär. Leaving from Frihamn at 6am, the Candela C-8 made it to Mariehamn by lunchtime, and returned to Frihamn the same day. For comparison, the Candela C-8 consumed 213 kWh of electricity, at a cost of about €40-50 (around $A66-83). “We actually had range anxiety, but not for the Candela,” said Gustav Hasselskog. “The irony is that the photographer’s gasoline-powered chase boat had to refuel six times during the trip, while we only charged three times. “We’re talking about 95% lower operating costs,” concluded Hasselskog. “This is a revolution that makes waterborne transöport competitive with land transport in terms of costs, which we will now demonstrate in public transport in Stockholm.”  Joshua S. We are definitely in an age of disruption, as much as the bashers, critics and cynics like to deny it. Amazing, 1/25th the cost of their ICE partner boat! And quieter, cleaner and calmer too boot! Google informs me a litre of diesel is € 1.668, so that trip would have used ~450 litres of diesel, or 4,500 kWh. That’s shockingly inefficient. Unless the ICE partner boat was a similar sized hydrofoil design, it’s comparing apples and oranges. Candela’s own website reckons hydrofoils are up to 80% more efficient than conventional hulled boats, which translates to about 50 litres of fuel. Please stick to the script. We’re not here to point out inconsistencies. We’re here to deride the people who don’t agree with us. Otherwise, what’s the point of social media? The point of the voyage WAS demonstrating the efficiency of their hydrofoil design. They used the electric motor to drive home the point. I’m all for cheaper and cleaner water transöport! I’ve got a well maintained canoe you could be interested in. Get back to us when it can cross an ocean. Anyone can cross a sea. Proof of concept can be done with rubber bands, icypole sticks and plastic straws. Why would a 30 ft leisure craft need to cross the Atlantic? There are currently no 30 ft leisure craft, ICE or otherwise, that can cross the Atlantic. So it’s not intended to be for mass transport, more of a rich wanker mover? Ok, fine.
